World's Greatest Handyman

Allen was a true professional. He was reliable, reasonably priced, tidy and pleasant to work with. The communication was A+ (always returned calls). Finding a handyman with contractor-like capabilities is is usually a process filled with anxiety. I am very happy I found a great handyman on this site. I am definitely going to use the World's Greatest Handyman again in the near future for other projects I'd like to get done.

All in all, it went well. I was a little nervous at his request for payment at the end of each day of work as I worried he would not come back and finish the jobs. (we have had that experience!) That was the only slightly negative thing about our experience, but he was trustworthy and completed everything we asked for. So, he was reliable, professional and not unreasonable in terms of his fee.

The results are as great as I had hoped! We have a second home that has accumulated small repairs. Through the recommendation of another contractor (also listed on Angies List as a stellar roofer), we found Allen Sherer. He was very easy to work with, very willing to do the jobs and get them done in a timely fashion. We gave him access to the house while we were gone and he finished the work within a bit over a week. (He was so determined to finish the job when he said he would, he even did the work after getting poison ivy poisoning at a different job ... with the rash and all!) We had tried to install a new master bathroom shower head a long time ago. A simple job, but somehow it got messed up inside the wall and if we turned on the water, it leaked down into the kitchen. The wall is a free-standing wall made of pine panelling. We didn't feel confident that we could pull the wall apart without it looking terrible afterwards. Allen fixed the leak and installed the shower head and you can't tell that anything had to be done. (See finished photo.) We bought the house with no bannister on the basement stairs. Of course, this can be dangerous. So we had him install a bannister on both sides of the steps. He installed 2 bannisters made with 2x6 wood. He sanded it smooth and it's very sturdy. He did mention that the stair risers were challenging in one spot, but it looks great. (See finished photos.) The front deck had some boards that were rotted through entirely or starting to rot. We needed to replace these. Some of the boards were under the railing on the deck. He removed those boards, replaced them with the treated 2x6 wood and stained them to match as closely as possible. He chose to only stain the new wood, as he felt that when weathered it would match the old wood better. We agree. (See photo.) We were going to call a Chimney Sweep to clean our fireplace chimney, but he said he could do it. When he got up there, he checked to see if there was anything to keep out critters and found an insufficient piece of wire mesh (too short on one side). He replaced it with new mesh that fit. He also cleaned out the fireplace itself and told us about a trap to catch the ashes that we didn't know about! We had tried to change a kitchen faucet on our own and found it too difficult to remove the old one. Also, there were some plumbing issues - the old sink was plumbed underneath to go into a side hole in the sink and we wanted the new fixture to be centered. Allen removed the old fixture, installed flexible plumbing pipes under the sink and installed the new faucet. He also went and bought a plug for the extra hole in the sink. It's now wonderful to have the peace-of-mind to know that there is someone we can call if we need to have something done in this house.
