There was some delay in getting under way (about a month to a month and a half later than we had originally discussed) however, this spring and early summer the weather was pretty uncooperative and Joe was pretty good about keeping me updated on the delays. Eventually we projected an early July start date. My only minor quibble was that the crew arrived without a prior phone call. I usually like to be there the day any projects on my home begin. Joe did explain that a last minute window to start had opened up, so I ended up being OK with that.
The crew had to deal with intermittent bad weather, but they did a great job and I'm quite happy with how the projects turned out. The 'crew chief' on site (Tim) was very good about explaining processes and other options for the future. I was initially not happy with the way the pavers near the pond were reset (I still thought there was too much of a slope) and they readily agreed to reset them to my liking.
This was excellent (A grade) work across the board in my opinion, though I've never had to hire anyone for landscaping work before. The punctuality 'B' grade was just for the lack of the arrival phone call mentioned above, but that was really a minor issue. As far as price, I'm still surprised at the cost of landscaping projects, but that's probably just my inexperience. I will say that when Joe originally came out and gave estimates I had gotten several others for the same projects and while Zingrone Landscaping was slightly higher, all were in the same ballpark. I went with Zingrone because I just had a better feel from the time and personal communication with Joe up front.
"Hello sir. We never came out to your property this year June 2015. I think you have me confused with someone else maybe. Your dates are not correct. I remember your job well. I even looked up the proposals prior to writing this. On 9-24 -2012 we completed the job which consisted of the retaining wall work, Planting small shrubs and medium to large (10 ft tall maple), removing shrubs as well as other items but not to install landscape fabric to the existing beds but only to weed them. On 4-24-14 I gave you a proposal for redoing your river rock beds. Which consisted of lifting up and setting aside existing river rock, installing new landscape fabric, reinstalling river rock and supplementing with new river rock where necessary for $1205.00 but you did not accept the proposal and we never performed that work. When we finished the job in 2012 for you, you were very satisfied with the work I remember . That must be someone else who did work for you in 2014 and someone else who came to your property this past June 2015. We may be higher priced then some of our competitors but I know we offer a quality product. 4 time Super Service Award winner Zingrone Landscapes & Construction est. 1993"
They did a great job - very courteous, professional, and patiently tolerant of my specific requests. When I was concerned that too little mulch had been laid in some areas, Mr. Zingrone responded immediately to my concern by sending his crew back with more mulch, wanting me to be completely satisfied! We are 100% happy with the results and it was a great pleasure to do business with such professional and kind people.
"Thank you very much for the job. It was a pleasure doing business with you"
e asked him to widen the gardens along the edge of the driveway and it was hard to tell what he did .
"The gentleman’s complaints do not make any sense. Over 2 years ago we performed a beautiful grading and hardscape job (steps) for this gentleman. We were there for over a week. He was happy and shook my hand when we finished. The gentleman was moving and was giving the home to his son who had recently graduated high school. The son was to have watered and weeded from that point on. I drove over there today 10-05-14 to see what type of condition the property was in and to no surprise it was an overgrown mess with a for sale sign in the yard. The customer never called about any concerns he had about a dying plant. So over 2 years go by and he decides to sell the home and he finds out that his son has not been keeping up with the maintenance so they blame the contractor!"
While Zingrone Landscaping was not the cheapest quote we received, we were confident that the final product would be worth the additional cost. Joe was very detailed in explaining his process and setting forth end product expectations. The quality of the job was outstanding, the wall and staircase look beautiful, and Joe and his team were very responsive to all of our questions or concerns.
I was somewhat disappointed with the degree to which my yard took a beating from this installation. I expected some damage, since the trees were planted on a small steep hillside, and four men were needed to move each tree, but I was surprised that all of my tulips, lilies, crocus, allium, and scilla were trampled and the vinca minor, which had covered the hillside, was ripped out / buried so that the hill ended up looking like a solid clay surface. They didn't mulch around the new trees. I've now spent a few hundred dollars and a couple of weekends to restore the hillside.
The trees were not trained, so they have more of a wild and unpruned look, which could be an aesthetic preference, but inner branches of birch are supposed to be pruned back during dormancy to avoid branches knocking together, which can damage bark and attract the borers to which white birch are susceptible. Both trees are larger than I expected, and it's nice to have them already look like an established part of the landscaping.
Overall my experience with Joe was good, and I would call him again for other jobs -- I just wasn't so impressed by the way this job was finalized.
I had asked for mulching all over yard, 2-3 inches thick. Was lucky to get a dusting in many areas. New plants placed in odd areas that did not look right. I told them that PJM rhods do not do well, but they planted 6 anyhow. 4 have died so far. I wanted grasses divided, daylilies divided. No daylilies divided, but they dug up at least 2 and left them sitting in the yard to dry out. 1 grass dug up and moved/divided. They moved items (ie patio table) and did not replace where they found them. The workers that did the bulk of the work were very unprofessional. I saw Joe for the estimate only. His wife, who answers the phone, is rude. Would not recommend, will not ever have again. Definitely not worth the price. A positive-they cleared out weeds and old fallen trees very well! But the mulch job was so thin that weeds came back within 1-2 weeks.
Followup to Mr Zingrone's response: Yes, he also repaired a block retaining wall. No complaints about that. The $80 he wanted to charge for the stone wall, after it was supposed to be in the proposal anyhow, is so much less than the amount of mulch I should have received and the dying plants now, plus his workers tore out a large patch of blackeyed Susans because they thought they were weeds. I just chose not to make contact at this point because the "office personnel" was very rude when I last talked with her. It's not worth the effort. I noticed from another reviewer that he didn't think the workers were too ambitious. I agree. They spent a lot of time sitting in the shade. I'll take care of replacing the plants myself. I appreciate recommendations, but it's my yard, I like plants and flowers, I like a fuller look. Obviously, he does not look at gardening magazines and how some of those gardens look. And his men did not pot up any plants, unless they took them with them. And as I stated originally, the mulch was only a dusting in many areas, definitely not 2-3 inches. I took a ruler and measured in various areas, it was an inch or less in most spots. Most of it has disintegrated and I'm down to bare ground this spring, it has not rolled down the slope. Buyer beware.
"This is a shock and a big disappointment to me. First off she was not charged $11,000 for weeding, mulching and gardening only. That was one item on the proposal and the total cost was $11,925.00 When the job was complete the customer was happy or so I thought and paid the remainder of her bill never once stating she was unhappy. She has not contacted me since the job was completed to ask any questions regarding plants that might not look so good or any other concerns. I also was at the job just about every day while the work progressed and the customer was at work. I must also say there was other contractors and their guys there at the same time as us working all over the house while we were there. 4 to 5 of my guys and maybe 4 to 5 other guys. It was very crowded and really made our job harder at times and I’m sure they didn’t like us being in the way either but that’s how she scheduled the project. -installing a keystone block retaining wall approximately 25' x 2.5’ and rebuilding a stone wall *we also repaired a 3rd small stone wall not in the proposal, at customers request and were not compensated even though she told my foreman she would pay extra for it but it was small. Maybe 6 feet by 3 feet -Power washing and installing polymeric sand in all of the joints of a large patio, installing a trellis - installing lawn where a bed was removed -removal of large dead trees and brush, cut back all large overgrown shrubs. - Minimal planting, weeding, thin out plants and mulching. I recommended simplifying what she had. Removal of most of the perennials (there were way too many. It was one big jungle) and installing fabric with ornamental stone on some areas as opposed to mulch only because the beds are steep and were so full of weeds that unless regular maintenance was followed, they were going to come back. I explained this but it was her decision. She also knew beforehand what plants were being installed and never stated that she did not like PJM Rhododendrons because they did not do well for her. Unfortunately plants need to be maintained when their just planted. Regular watering and just keeping an eye on them at the minimum. If the plants were looking bad she should have called me. She had a warranty on the plantings but she also needed to keep in touch should she have any questions or concerns. I also don’t see how the plants were placed in odd places and didn’t look right either but that’s what she’s saying now. She has never called to express a concern on any matters since we completed the job. The mulch was put down to 2-3 inches and then some. I'm sure heavy rains helped wash it down the slopes by now though. All grasses were cut back and the day lilies were so heavy that we could not even put them anywhere else on the property. Actually we were potting up plants for her which was not even in the proposal. Like I said I did make other recommendations for a much neater and very low maintenance garden. As far as my wife being rude on the telephone, that doesn’t make sense. My wife just scheduled the estimate. Ok maybe my guys didn’t put a patio table back or maybe it was one of the other companies there, I can’t honestly say, but being unprofessional doesn’t sound like my guys. She had no complaints about the retaining walls, patio, tree removal, just the items that required follow up maintenance. So there you go. Almost a year goes by and no follow up maintenance and no communication and she has weeds and some dead plants. Go figure. She should have followed my advice about a low maintenance solution. I wish her well though."
the work this fall was the easiest i requested.
zingrone's mulched the beds and trimmed/shaped various greenery last spring. they also removed a section of cyclone fence.
the previous spring the beds needed to have the pine bark mulch removed before the hardwood mulch was laid. they also put river pebbles under a deck area.
i assume they will create a patio area using my many pavers and bricks in addition to mulch and greenery trimming.
"Thank you very much sir, it is always a pleasure to do work you. Happy holidays"
We talked with Joe who came out to give an estimate, and let us go around the yard pointing out the things we wanted worked on. He had multiple suggestions for how we might take care of each of the issues we had, with differently-priced options. He seemed very knowledgeable. We were not expecting the estimate to be low, as we were having so much done and Belgium(Belgian?) block is not cheap. The estimate came in at what my wife and I agree is a perfectly reasonable and fair price for the work being done. It was not a low-ball figure, and there were no "surprise" charges during the course of the work. Joe was pleasant and professional.
We are equally impressed with the people who did the work. They not only did their jobs well, but also went above and beyond. While the contract was just to clean/remove and replace the caulk joining the porch to the patio, the contractor actually cleaned it and re-mortared it so we'd likely never need to worry about it again. He didn't have to do that, but it was much appreciated.
Similarly, with the natural stones that had made up the (poor rendition of a) retaining wall we were getting replaced, they actually distributed the stones along our chain-link fence line at the end of our driveway and up against a mulch bed at our request, to keep our small dogs from trying to dig under the fence. We would have paid extra for this, as where the old retaining wall stone was put was not specified in the contract, but we were not charged for this.
On one of our mulch beds that covers a hillside that is up against our driveway, one of them suggested that we have them cut a hole in the landscape fabric for a patch of wild daisies but leave about a foot of landscape fabric between it and the driveway, so that when the daisies fell over later in the year it wouldn't fall onto our driveway (which we had been having happen for a while). Just another instance where the workers had an opportunity to do strictly what was on the contract in the easiest way possible, but instead put a little extra effort in to give us a result we were happier with.
I honestly didn't know what was involved in building a retaining wall, but the difference between what they took out and what they replaced it with was night and day. They really went all-out on it. They dug a trench and laid gravel in it, put a drainage pipe in, and installed the block and reinforced it however they do it these days. This wall is built to last.
The yard where we had them put the dirt in you can't even tell that there were ever roots showing from our large maple tree, and the grass is already filling in nicely, despite the shade. Joe did tell us that naturally the roots would begin to show again years down the road, which makes sense to us. It was nice that he was up front about it. No surprises on this job at all.
The stump grinding was done thoroughly - there was no evidence of them left, other than the pile of topsoil and grass seed they put down.
These guys cleaned up thoroughly at the end of each day and made sure their tools were out of the path of our cars before they left.
Our experience was totally positive from start to finish, and we would hire them again for any big job we have without hesitation.
"We're happy to see that Angie's List gave this customer the opportunity to the to remove the false statements from her earlier comment. We are sorry that things did not work out with this customer. We were accommodating in every way possible. She was never over charged, and we are not sure why she thinks this. We send out itemized statements to reflect the work done. We will continue to provide her neighbors with quality service and we will take her criticisms as a learning experience. We are a company who truly cares about pleasing our customers. We wish her and her family the best of luck. – Joe Zingrone (owner)"
