Paul, the owner, is both professional and responsive. I work nights and am often not home for several days at a time. Having Paul and his crew assist in my lawn care has open up a large chunk of my time when I'm not at work, leaving me one less thing to worry about. I live in a working class/retired neighborhood where many of the residents spend a lot of time and effort maintaining their properties. Prior to hiring Paul, my lawn and beds would go unkept at times and was a source of personal embarrassment as I simply did not have the time or energy to match the level of care that my neighbors put into their properties. Hiring Paul was a great decision! The work is always consistent, fairly priced, and gives my property the professional look that mirrors that of my neighbors. I have used Paul for several other landscaping projects and have recommended him to several co-workers and neighbors. I would recommend his services to anyone looking for continued service or a one-time project in the Pittsburgh area.

I have already recommended him to a friend, who was also impressed with his professionalism and has hired him to do some work. My neighbor is also interested in having him do some work for her.
Description of Work: I am having Paul do most of my yard work, which includes mowing, leaf clean up, seeding, mulching, and hedge trimming. So far, he has been very professional and his work is good. He knows how to trim properly, and seems to know what is best for my lawn. I have asked his advice regarding mulching, and he provided a good mulch for me. His prices are reasonable. I didn't add a cost above, because it is monthly, and changes with the job.
Paul has been doing regular work on our property for several years now. He is incredibly nice and professional. The yard always looks great and the prices are affordable. It's also a bonus that he communicates frequently over email and sends his invoices via the same method if requested. My wife and I are always happy with the work done by Paul. Here are some of the services provided: -Mowing, edging, trimming -Trimming of large hedgerow -Trimming and hauling of decorative grasses -Installed topsoil, planted grass, and fertilized -Supplied and installed mulch in our many flower beds -General care of flower beds - wedding, weed killer, trimming flowers and plants -Leaf collection and removal -Etc. - There are probably a few other things that I'm forgetting
Description of Work: Removed leaves from lawn and beds. Hauled and dumped off site. Cut back and removed hostas from flower bed. Light trim of hedgerow. Mowed, bagged and trimmed lawns and curbside.

They did a great job in the spring but they were too busy to do any work for me this summer. It was a little frustrating because I felt a little let down. He has done great work in the past I would definitely use him again. Their prices are very good compared to other lawn services, the owner is super friendly and helpful, and they just do good work. It is nice, clean, and professional. We have used him tons in the past and I wanted my hedges trimmed once a month this summer, but it was really hard to get his services.

In 2010-2011 we experienced a marked increase in customer requests for landscape renovations, tree removals and tree reductions. Restoring the curb appeal of overgrown sites with damaged landscape structures has become somewhat of our niche. We continue to provide grounds maintenance and snow removal services to our commercial accounts. We still perform residential clean ups, --including lawn, bed, shrub and tree work. We are especially available for tree removals and reductions. But we are not presently taking on recurring mowing and trimming accounts, or monthly shrub work. It was a painful decision, but I decided to cut back on the mowing and trimming, and increase the work that both extends our season, and improves our chances of remaining viable. As for this particular Angie's List member, by 2011 we were limiting our basic mowing and trimming services to Allegheny East. I traveled to Carnegie to restore the property to a condition that made it easier for this member to maintain it. The size and cost of the job permitted this. We enjoy a great deal of repeat business from existing customers. I thank this member for expressing this sentiment, and I regret that we are no longer able to provide the service to which he had become accustomed.

Good service for a decent price. I ended up stopping service because I wanted someone who would do landscaping and not just maintenance.
We do more than maintenance work, --and we service commercial as well as residential accounts. Renovating overgrown landscapes has become somewhat of a niche for us. This includes tree removals and reductions, as well as repairs to existing landscape structures such as retaining walls and fencing. Customer requests for these services increased dramatically in 2010-2011. We still perform residential clean ups that include lawn, bed, shrub and tree work. We are especially available for tree removals and reductions. But we are not presently taking on recurring mowing and trimming accounts, or monthly shrub work. It was a painful decision, but I decided to cut back on the mowing and trimming, and increase the work that both extends our season, and improves our chances of remaining viable. Likewise, we perform snow removal for commercial accounts, and we are fully booked for the coming season. I do offer my sincere apologies to those customers for whom we can no longer offer basic mowing and trimming service. As an aside, your consistently prompt payment makes it much easier for us to keep boots on the ground and hands working in the field.

June 2010? We serviced this property on May 12, 2009! More than 2 1/2 years ago. We pulled a Holly bush, and cut back the pyrocantha where and how the customer instructed. We charged $120, the member was on hand during the process, we were payed promptly, and received only compliments. Spoke with the member this evening, and she acknowledged we were there 2 1/2 years ago, not this year. What's going on?

I received no phone messages from the person identified in this report. During the holiday week, I returned all calls for which there were messages. I received several phone calls and emails from Angie's list customers. I performed work for two, declined service for another, and scheduled work for another to occur after the Holiday. I do not believe that this report is valid, or perhaps it is valid for a company other than Urbanscape. I have contacted an Angie's List representative to see if we can resolve the discrepancy. Again, I recieved no recorded phone messages from the person identified in this report.

As indicated in previous reports, this was a rough summer for Paul and his team. They are experiencing some growing pains thanks to the economy and the transition from commercial to residential work. Paul was quick in giving us our estimate and performing the first service. He gave great advice about how to treat our lawn but somewhere in the middle of our relationship the communication got muddled and I was left with the impression that his staff had missed a visit when, according to their records, I simply failed to notice that it had been cut. Knowing that to be a possibility and trusting that he knew better than I did (we are/were first time home owners) and our lawn is thin and cutting close is not recommended, I accepted this explanation. He offered to wipe our billing history so that we could go our separate ways which was very kind of him, albeit unnecessary. Long story short, we think Paul is a good guy doing good work. Dealing with the general public can be a thankless and grueling task. We appreciated that he was forthright and approachable and if we were in need and once he has the phone call/email/administrivia side of his business managed we'd work with him again. Editing to add: Wow, so contacting a service provider and inquiring about a service where it wasn't clear to the customer that it was performed is tantamount to difficulty collecting payment? If I recall correctly you were emailed the same day, the question was posed and you were paid shortly thereafter regardless of the fact that you offered to let us go without payment. Nice. I tried to be gracious. Now I'm just annoyed.

I'm not sure what to make of your report. We showed up at the appointed time, we performed and documented the work as agreed, we received an A grade for price and quality, but a C grade for responsiveness and punctuality? You disputed a mowing visit. I provided the service date, the service time, and supporting details provided by the employee that serviced your home that day. Subsequently, you acknowledged seeing the truck, trailer and employee on the day in question. I promptly responded to each call and email that I received from you. I made myself available, I gave you the best advice, and the best price that I could afford, yet had difficulty collecting payment. With a new customer, that's not a good sign. I felt that you could find a company that represented a better fit for your needs, --and said so. Is that what the mixed review is about?

I'm sorry that you did not receive a return call informing you that we were booked solidly through June and July. In June alone, I received an estimated 50-60 phone calls and emails requesting service. The emails were manageable, but the phone calls prooved overwhelming. Unfortunately, there were times when I cleared messages as soon as I heard them in order to empty my voicemail and improve access for existing/ongoing accounts. I am growing the business as quickly as I can. There are four of us now, but we maintain many recurring accounts, and the height of the season presents customer contact challenges that I am still working to resolve. Letting me know early in the season that you would like to have us back again would really help. We start working earnestly in mid March, and perform clean ups and shrub work as early as Februaury. In the interim, I'll get moving on a solution to the return call issue that is the source of your dissatisfaction. Best regards.

I showed up promptly to perform an estimate. I could not complete an estimate for unspecified work, to occur at an unspecified time, --pending other unrelated work. My explanation to her at that time was, of course, less terse and more courteous, and here is what I recall. She had other exterior work tentatively scheduled to occur at her home in the coming weeks. She had some indecision about the scope of services that she wanted us to perform (mulch, reseed, perhaps pavers along the side lawn?). These factors precluded a valid estimate. I explained that the exterior work may cause more damage to the lawn than is currently present, our availability may be very different in a few weeks or a month, and that the price for mulch, seeding, pavers etc. would depend upon the time and materials used, all factors that had yet to be determined. I advised her to contact me once her other work was completed, and that If we were available, I would provide her with an appropriate estimate at that time. It's now June, and I have yet to recieve an email, text or phone call of any kind. The negative post is the first indication that she was in any way prepared to re-engage the estimate and work planning process. I showed up to perform an estimate for a potential customer. Based upon a walk through and lengthy conversation, I determined than an estimate was not advisable at that time. I prefer that the requestor contact me in that case so that I do not expend additional resources on an account that is not prepared to proceed. Since free estimates are only free for the consumer, this approach seems both reasonable and cost effective. I showed up and made a good faith attempt to fulfill her request for an estimate. What and when are important to that process, so please don't beat me up on this one. I tried, honestly, I tried.

I'm glad that you were pleased with the quality of the work that we performed. Weather aside, requests for proof of insurance will delay scheduling of service. Our insurance provider forwards certificates of insurance directly to the requesting party. We will not schedule any work while requests for certificates are pending. Via U.S. mail, this usually takes a day or two, and we schedule roughly a week out. I apologize for any inconvenience, but I believe that this is the best process for safeguarding the consumer, and for protecting the integrity of the business.

Pretty lousily, I'd say. I should mention that the only reason why I persisted is because I hate giving negative reports. The guy seemed so nice and professional over the phone, and the company was at the top of Angie's List. I just didn't want to hurt his business. But after blowing me off three times, I feel like I have some responsibility to the community to submit an honest report.
Description of Work: I needed some hedges cut in the back of my house. It wasn't a big job and wasn't an emergency, so when he said it could few weeks, I didn't have a problem with that. He indicated, however, that he would call me in a few days with an estimate. I got no call, so I called back a week or so later. He apologized (was very polite) and said that he'd call me back with an estimate in a couple of days. He left me a message a day or so later saying that he was looking at the hedges that minute and would either call me back or email an estimate. A week later, having received neither, I called him. After I got no return call, I called again, and he answered ... apologized ... said how busy they were ... said it wouldn't happen again ... that he would call me over the weekend to confirm that he'd come by and meet me at the house that following Monday evening. I never heard from him, and he didn't show up.

I am sorry for dropping the ball on your estimate. Your criticism is valid. I am personally responsible for losing your contact information, and for allowing you to slip between the cracks of our active accounts. The great reviews and rapid growth this year (mostly organic and some new) generated far more activity than I was accustomed to managing. I needed more than an organizer to manage contact, routing, scheduling, estimating and billing processes. I am still a working owner, and between the office and the field, it took a while to identify a cost effective and workable solution to our customer contact and management systems. Subsequently, I have moved to a better integrated and mobile, web-based, system that operates from the field as well as the office. We are now installing the necessary components, and I am confident that our process for moving customers from estimates to invoices will be more reliable and efficient than has been the case. Sincerely, Paul Strothers

Overall, it went very well. I called Paul on a weekend and he answered his phone immediately. That seems to be rare for some many contractors. He was very friendly and professional. He was going to stop by and give me an estimate on a Monday or Tuesday. I didn't hear back, so I called him on a Wednesday. Once again, he answered, was incredibly nice, and apologized for not giving me an estimate on Monday or Tuesday. He had been very busy. He said that he would stop over between 12-1 PM that very day to take a look at the ornamental grasses. I didn't hear back from him until Friday (two days later) when he was actually at my house. He asked for permission to walk around my property. The estimate given was very reasonable and I hired him. He showed up with one of his employees the next morning. They went to work without notifying me that they had arrived, but it really wasn't much of an issue. They worked efficiently and finished in a short amount of time. As I mentioned, they were professional and never bothered my wife and I as they worked in the yard. The grasses looked great and they cleaned up every last trace of grass clippings. After they finished, I talked to Paul and he explained his work strategy. He likes to do the work whenever he can squeeze it in and then send an invoice in the mail or via email. I paid him cash, but it seemed that he preferred checks, which is a good option. Everything is very official and I thought the hand-written receipt was a nice touch. Paul was as nice in person as he was on the phone. He chatted with me for a few minutes and I felt like a valued customer.
