The good: I found Ken online with google. His swingsets looked nice and seemed to be a reasonable price compared to store bought sets. He was pretty responsive to emails and we got scheduled pretty quickly for installation. The swingset itself turned out fine. The bad: The reasonable price got jacked up pretty quickly by $300 "difficult access fee" and $100 distance fee, despite there being neither particularly difficult access and my house being within 10 miles of Ken's home. There was this whole story about how difficult my access would be and it might even take an extra day (it didn't and Ken wasn't exactly burning the midnight oil to finish in the 3 days it was supposed to take). By the time I got the contract with these fees, my kids were already promised the swingset so whatever, I just went along with it even though the price was no longer good and was now just okay. The real problem I have came after completion. We paid half up front, I put the second half in the mail the day after the swingset was done. I told Ken. It was on a Friday and I left to go out of town for a week. He was aware that I was going to be gone right after he finished the project. The following Monday I get an email about how he hadn't received the check yet. Come on man, its only the next business day. Ken's faith in the Pittsburgh mail to receive things the next day reliably is cute, but not very realistic. I hear nothing else, then get another email Thursday that he still hadn't received the check and was demanding a $100 late fee now. I didn't think a late fee was appropriate because I *know* I mailed a check as soon as I could have and I had been in contact with him the entire time. I offered him credit card payment that day (which he still wouldn't accept as an on time payment because he doesn't get the funds deposited into his bank account for 3 days and would charge me a 3% surcharge despite nothing in the contract to this affect) or to overnight a new check to him (mind you again I'm out of town on vacation, yet still willing to find a post office to take care of this for him). He sends me a very long, condescending and entirely unprofessional response that isn't even worth detailing here because it was so ridiculous. I've dealt with a lot of contractors in the process of renovating a large 110 year old home, so its not like I don't have experience in the matter and I have to say dealing with Ken was the worst experience I've had. His behavior over what should have been a very minor issue was off the charts. I can't imagine how he would respond to an actual problem. I would never deal with him again and can't recommend anyone else does either. In summary, if you want a decent swingset installed at an average price by a jerk... Ken is your man. Otherwise, look elsewhere for your needs.

Response from THE HONEY-DO MAN AT MORNINGSTAR PROPERTIES
"The swingset itself turned out fine." That's the most important thing. His kids will still be having fun years from now. SOME OF HIS COMPLAINTS ARE ABOUT THE ADDITIONAL FEES: I visited his house before the job, quoted him the extra fees, and he agreed. He must have promised his kids before I got there. The $300 difficult access fee was based on how far the job was from my van. I could not drive right up to the work site. I had to walk everything in. I couldn't even use my hand truck because there were steps. If he didn't like this extra fee, he should not have proceeded. The $100 access fee is based on his distance and the number of trips. I was driving for more than three hours, some of it while hauling lumber. Again: if he didn't like it, he should not have proceeded. I said the job would probably take three days, and it did. The price was fixed and did not depend on how many days it actually took. The price was agreed to in advance. There were no surprises. HIS OTHER COMPLAINTS WERE ON HOW LONG IT TOOK HIM TO PAY: The final payment is due when the job is complete. He could have left a check behind with his nanny to give to me when I was done. He didn't. I saw his wife when the job was done. She could have written a check. She didn't. He says he mailed a check the next day. That's fine. I have a one-week waiting period before the late fee kicks in. I waited a few days, and never got the check. I emailed him. He said to wait another day or two, but since he was on vacation, it would be too hard for him to mail another check. I waited the full week, then asked him to include the late fee. The amount was not a surprise. It was agreed to in advance. He was outraged. He said, "I can't be responsible for the mail and if the check still hadn't arrived...", Actually he can be held responsible. How does it work with the IRS? He offered to overnight a check, but now it was too late. Had he done this when he first heard the check did not arrive, we could have avoided all this. I never refused to accept a credit card payment. I only said that it would not help him meet a deadline that had already passed. When he got home, he mailed me a new check. However, the amount was wrong, and was $200 light. I returned him that check, and he wrote another one. The second check had an error, too. He altered the numeric amount. Altering a check can void it, even though he initialed the change. I deposited the check anyway, knowing that the written amount trumps the numeric amount. That check did clear. Now comes the funny part. I didn't tell him this part, because the job was done, the payment was complete, and I saw no need to send this into extra innings. The original check finally DID arrive! What they say about doctors is true: His handwriting was so bad that you cannot read the zip code! It went to the wrong post office. [Member name removed] also failed to write his return address. So this check went to a dead letter office. Someone had to look me up manually using my name and my street address, and write the correct zip code. It finally arrived SIXTEEN days after it was due. I did not deposit this original check since I had already cashed the replacement check; cashing two checks for the same bill would be fraudulent. He was wrong when he said, "I can't be responsible for the mail and if the check still hadn't arrived." He IS responsible! It was HIS fault that it was not delivered. SUMMARY There were several mistakes: * Claiming the difficult access fee, the distance fee, and the late fee were not agreed to in advance, when they were, * Missing two opportunities to pay on the day of completion, * Mailing an undeliverable check (two counts: illegible zip code, and no return address), * Failing to send a replacement check while on vacation, * Writing a replacement check with an incorrect amount. Every one of these mistakes is on him. All I know is that my job was done, and he was satisfied with it, yet I had to wait two weeks for my payment. I think your report is unjust and unfair, and I think you should take it down. Ken Whitaker

The experience was fine. The man who came out was prompt and excellent. He charged us over $100. He was right on time and he did what I have asked him to do. I would recommend him because he knew what he was doing. The cabinet did not come in the correct position but he was able to take it apart, fix it and make it work. It avoided me to have to just send it back to the manufacturer or to get another piece.

Ken was very responsive from the start. He called me back the same day that I called him and was very accommodating with his schedule. Ken arrived right on time and finished the project within a very reasonable time frame. He knew what he was doing and made the job look very simple. Ken was very nice as well as professional.

Did a fine job putting the stand together. Not sure how wide of a spectrum of jobs he can perform. However, very good for putting furniture together that need assembled. Seems to like to do that and experienced at it. Not the cheapest (charges a trip charge.) but not the most expensive either.
Description of Work: He is very friendly. He built a Flat screen TV stand. Seems to be very experienced with that. Although, he could not find the handbook. I had to call the store and get them to fax me directions because he said they were not in the box. Put me through quite an ordeal only to find that the directions were there all along. They were in the box! (Ugh!) Was very quck putting it together. Helped move it into place although since he's close to my husband's age, is not able to move things around like you might need. However, was willing to help put things in order. Seems very nice.

I heard about The Honey-Do Man from a friend, who was extremely satisfied with his work. I am extremely satisfied too. I asked Ken to paint my bedrooms. He did a BEAUTIFUL job. Plus, he came when he said he would, he cleaned up after himself, and the total bill was LESS than the original estimate! And while he was here, he did a few extra odd jobs, too. He adjusted my garage door springs and added a second button for my garage door opener. I must say that the overall experience was fantastic. I will definitely hire him again. A+

Ken did power-wash the back patio and attach the socket plates, but did not fix the brick (claiming that it would be unsafe), and did not respond with the list of improvement areas. Ken billed me $202.00, and kept the power-washer, as agreed. I did not immediately respond to, nor pay, Ken, as I believed the amount to be well in excess of the services performed, and he did not complete the assigned tasks. Within 10 days of receiving Ken's invoice, he had threatened to go to the magistrate (aside from not being a good business practice, this is in violation of Fair Debt Collections Act (2006)). I expressed my concern that the approximate amount of expected compensation of $292.00 ($202.00 invoice, plus $90.00 that Ken assessed as value for the power-washer) seemed unfair for the amount of work performed (i.e., power-washing my small patio). Ken refused to lower the original amount, immediately offered to take items from my home as partial compensation, and then refused to return the key to my home. I did not call the police to retrieve the key (within my rights), but did have the locks changed, as I determined that Ken was unreasonable. I finally agreed to pay the $202 via paypal. Ken refused and insisted I pay via money order. I complied, but inadvertently forgot to sign it. Ken claimed he sent it back to me for signature, but I never received it. After assuring him that I would pay him (I had the money order company reissue the money order), he filed with the magistrate (less than 90 days after original invoice), claiming I now owed him magistrate filing fees as well. Ken's email correspondence included immediate threats to go to the magistrate which is in violation of law; coercion by explaining the potential impact on my credit score; and happiness that I would spend more money on a lawyer than to dispute the amount he charged me. Though I had originally prepared to contest in court (after continuances, the revised date is in January 2009), my family recently decided to pay Ken's requested amount, as we now live in Colorado and believe the trip would be cost and time prohibitive. Ken has wasted my time, has broken debt collection practices, used coercion to attempt to receive payment, while knowingly taking advantage of the fact I now live out of state. I would caution anyone coming across Ken's websites and advertisements to stay away.
Description of Work: In August 2008, I engaged Ken Whitaker (The-Honey-Do-Man, Morningstar Properties) to perform requested services and to make recommendations to assist in the sale of my Pittsburgh home, as advertised on his website. Specifically, I asked him to power-wash my back patio (no more than 75 sq feet); replace 2 bricks to be consistent with the architecture and integrity of the original brick patio stairs; replace sockets & socket plates on 2-3 outlets; observe and recommend any other areas for improvement which may assist me in selling my home more quickly (Ken's advertised expertise). I told him that he should keep the power-washer in my garage after he completed the work.

Response from THE HONEY-DO MAN AT MORNINGSTAR PROPERTIES
HERE ARE THE 4 JOBS HE WANTED DONE: 1. POWER WASH HIS PATIO, WHICH IS MUCH BIGGER THAN THE 75 SQ FT HE CLAIMS. IN FACT, IT’S MORE THAN 300 SQ FT! THE MEMBER DELAYED PAYMENT FOR 27 DAYS, CLAIMING HE WAS WAITING ON HIS REALTOR TO INSPECT THE JOB. HE FINALLY ADMITTED THAT HE WAS NOT WAITING ON ANY REALTOR, AND THAT A NEIGHBOR DID INSPECT, WHO REPORTED TO HIM THAT THIS JOB WAS COMPLETED SATISFACTORILY. 2. REPAIR BROKEN STEP. I PASSED ON THIS JOB. THE WAY HE WANTED ME TO FIX IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SAFE, AND I WILL NOT FIX A BROKEN STEP IN AN UNSAFE MANNER. I SUGGESTED A SAFE REPAIR, BUT HE DIDN'T WANT TO AUTHORIZE IT. 3. REPLACE OLD OUTLETS THAT WERE PAINTED OVER. I PASSED ON THIS JOB, TOO. HIS HOUSE IS A FIRE WAITING TO HAPPEN. HE HAS HOT GROUND WIRES, AN OUTLET THAT IS NOT CONTROLLED BY ANY BREAKER, AND DUCT TAPE ON HIS BREAKER BOX. I TOLD HIM HE NEEDS AN ELECTRICIAN. 4. MAKE A LIST OF TEN SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS TO HELP HIM SELL HIS HOME. I DID GIVE HIM HIS LIST. HE SHOULD SEE MY EMAIL OF 8/22.HERE ARE SOME COMMENTS ON HIS COMPLAINT: "I BELIEVED THE AMOUNT TO BE WELL IN EXCESS OF THE SERVICES PERFORMED" HE NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE HOURLY RATE OR ACCUSED ME OF PADDING HOURS. HE THINKS THE BILL WAS TOO HIGH BECAUSE HE THINKS I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THE JOB IN ONLY TWO HOURS. HE ALSO REMEMBERS HIS 300 SQ FT PATIO AS BEING ONLY 75 SQ FT. THERE WAS NO ESTIMATE. WE AGREED ON AN HOURLY RATE. HE WAS AWARE OF THE NUMBER OF HOURS I WAS WORKING, AND COULD HAVE PUT A HALT TO THE JOB AT ANY TIME. MY HOURS WERE LOGGED. I WORKED THE HOURS THAT I WORKED. HE WANTED A REDUCTION AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE. THIS IS NOT CUSTOMARY. TRY GETTING YOUR TRANSMISSION REPAIRED FOR $2000, AND THEN AFTER THE WORK IS DONE TELL THE TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT YOU THINK THE JOB WAS ONLY WORTH $500. THE TIME FOR NEGOTIATION IS BEFORE THE JOB STARTS. THE BILL WAS NOT OUTRAGEOUS FOR THE WORK INVOLVED. HIS TOTAL GREW HIGHER THAN THE ORIGINAL AMOUNT BECAUSE OF THE COST OF COLLECTION."HE DID NOT COMPLETE THE ASSIGNED TASKS" I COULD NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS OR THE PROBLEM WITH THE STEPS ON OUR INITIAL PHONE CALL. THIS FALLS UNDER OUR "VARIATIONS TO CONTRACT". I PASSED ON THESE JOBS FOR GOOD REASON. OF COURSE I DID NOT CHARGE HIM. "OFFERED TO TAKE ITEMS FROM MY HOME" THIS WAS A COMPROMISE OFFER, INTENDED AS FULL COMPENSATION. LIKE THE POWER WASHER, HOW COULD HE MISS THINGS HE LEFT BEHIND? HE REJECTED THE OFFER. "REFUSED TO RETURN THE KEY" I OFFERED TO RETURN HIS KEY WHEN HE PAID. I OFFERED A SIMULTANEOUS PAYMENT AND KEY EXCHANGE VIA THAT NEIGHBOR. I OFFERED TO MAIL IT TO HIS NEW ADDRESS, WHICH HE DIDN'T WANT TO DIVULGE."KEN REFUSED (A PAYPAL PAYMENT) AND INSISTED I PAY VIA MONEY ORDER" I DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT PAYPAL ON EVERY TRANSACTION, AND IN THIS CASE I REFUSED, FEARING HE WOULD START A CHARGE BACK. I DID NOT INSIST HE PAY VIA MONEY ORDER. I SUGGESTED A PERSONAL CHECK, BUT HE THINKS I CAN RAID HIS ACCOUNT SOMEHOW. I SUGGESTED HE PAY IN CASH VIA THAT NEIGHBOR. HE CHOSE TO PAY VIA MONEY ORDERS. HE CAN PAY THE MONEY ORDER FEES. HE IS A MASTER OF DELAY. HE COULD BE THE PERSON WHO COINED THE PHRASE, "THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL." HE DELAYED 10 DAYS AT THE BEGINNING BY SCREENING MY CALLS TO HIS CELL PHONE, BY NOT RETURNING ANY VOICE MAILS, AND BY NOT ANSWERING ANY EMAILS. HE DELAYED 27 DAYS PRETENDING TO WAIT ON A REALTOR INSPECTION. HE MAILED AN UNSIGNED MONEY ORDER, WHICH I SENT BACK TO HIM FOR HIS SIGNATURE. HE CLAIMED HE NEVER GOT IT, BUT I KNOW HE DID, BECAUSE OF A SLIP-UP IN SOMETHING HE SAID. HE DELAYED AGAIN BECAUSE HE WAS EXPECTING SOME OUT-OF-TOWN COMPANY. HE DELAYED AGAIN WHILE THAT COMPANY WAS VISITING. I WONDER IF HE PAID HIS LIGHT BILL WHILE THEY WERE VISITING. I FINALLY DID GO TO THE MAGISTRATE, AFTER TWO MONTHS OF THIS. AND THEN HE DELAYED THE HEARING TO 12/31. HE TRIED TO DELAY THE HEARING AGAIN UNTIL APRIL! THE MAGISTRATE REJECTED HIS REQUEST. SORRY, BUT I THINK THIS COMPLAINT IS WITHOUT MERIT. HE DID ASK FOR MY SERVICES, AND WE DID AGREE ON THE TERMS. HE SAID THE POWER WASHING WAS SATISFACTORY, AND I DID GIVE HIM HIS LIST OF SUGGESTIONS. I PASSED ON TWO JOBS FOR GOOD REASON, AND I HOPE HE HAS CALLED AN ELECTRICIAN BY NOW.
