It was a pretty long process and not sure of the actual work quality. i suspect it is fine.
Description of Work: Seems the deal was overwhelming for them. It was difficult to get things done. They said they cleaned the gutters on a day when I wasn't there. I trust that this happened, but couldn't possibly confirm this. The owner was very apologetic and tried to make things right, but, again, I think he was overwhelmed with the response. Based on my interaction with the owner, I suspect they are a good company that cares about providing good service and that this was just an anomaly.

Scheduling the appointment was tough and it took several emails to get the ball rolling and a little over a month to get the appointment, but that is understandable with an increased demand following the Angie’s List deal. I found the woman I talked to regarding scheduling to be very pleasant and helpful. But, the visit from the Healey Company was pretty much a bad experience, enough so that I'm considering dropping Angie's List. First, the guy smelled so badly of smoke it was hard to talk to him. He lit a cigarette within 5 minutes of arriving at my house. I asked him not to smoke in front of me, explaining I have asthma. 10 minutes later, he's smoking on the roof. 10 minutes after that he's at the top of a 10' ladder talking to me and starts smoking again. I ask him not to smoke in front of me, he says, "I'm up here" implying that shouldn't bother me. His son, meanwhile, is spitting wads of chew all around the outside of the house. As he tells me what's happening with the condition of my roof, I ask him questions trying to understand the roof and how it should have been done, since he's saying the roof was done wrong. He gives short answers, not very helpful at all. I continually say, I'm trying to understand, I don't know much about roofs, you are the professional, break it down in layman terms. He seems very defensive if I ask him anything. I am asking him questions about a garage roof that he keeps saying is garbage and needs to be replaced. I'm trying to understand what is wrong, how it got to that point, and what should have been done. He, again, is very short and curt with his answers. Eventually he says to me, you can learn all of this on the internet. I tell him that is offensive and that as the professional standing in front of my garage he is a better source than the internet to address my particular problem. He does eventually apologize for the internet comment several times after and he does eventually answer my questions and the mood of the visit changes, but this is NOT the professionalism of a two time award winner on Angie's List. I paid for 2 hours of maintenance and after walking on my roof and doing a little caulking on one area, he was done. I'm not sure what else there was to do, but the experience was NOT worth $199. VERY disappointed. Some time after the visit, I received a letter. Included with the letter was a page with 12 photos, and a contract/invoice stating the work done, “cleaned out gutters and caulked counter-flashing on rear porch”, and notes: “The Healey Company found no additional work to be done.” First, he caulked and cleared gutters from a porch area approximately 12x6 feet in area. (The rest of the house has box gutters). $199 is a hefty fee for that little maintenance. Second, there are several problem areas on my roof that we talked about: water leaking into a Bay Window, box gutters that needed attention, and the garage roof that her referred to as “garbage”. So I found it quite interesting that Healey found “no additional work to be done”. Not much of an inspection. Lastly, I could not tell what or where some of the photos are or are from. There is no explanation of what he shot or why. It’s as if he needed to snap the prerequisite 12 photos, and so he did. This Angie’s List deal was purchased for $199 and valued at $420! I would generously assess the full priced value to be closer to $50-100.

I initially purchased an Angie's List Big Deal special for $199 of roof maintenance and evaluation. The company cleaned the gutters during that initial maintenance, and repaired a few loose shingles. They found a few other issues with the coverings near the chimney and exhaust vents, and recommended another $500 in additional work. Their recommendations came via email with a written report with multiple digital pictures. I was at work when they came by, but they always let me know when they were coming a few days in advance, via phone call. They were not able to easily schedule on Wednesdays afternoons when I am off work, but they did come exactly when they said they would. I am not a good judge of the quality of their work, but they seemed professional and were easy to communicate with, both on the telephone, and by email, which I prefer.I would work with them again.

I found the Healey Company on Angie's List and was excited to find a local company to do a kitchen renovation at my South Side home. There was excellent communication and Michael Healey came to my house to take measurements and discuss a renovation. That part of the process was great and I really like Mr. Healey. We met right before Thanksgiving and he said he'd have a proposal in about 3 weeks - which was fine, as we weren't in a big hurry but did want to get an estimate and start the planning process. About a week after the November meeting, someone from the Healey Company contacted me and said they needed a specific measurement - they made an appt for a Friday afternoon to come over and get the measurement. They never showed up. I ended up emailing them on Monday and taking the measurement myself. That was the last I heard from anyone...until I inquired in late January as to where my proposal was. I received a call back from Michael Healey apologizing and saying I'd have something in the next day or two. That was two weeks ago - I've since sent a follow-up email but have had no response. Even though we weren't in a big hurry to get a renovation started, waiting 2+ months for a proposal and having someone not show up or deliver something on time does not lend much comfort that a renovation would go smoothly.

We appreciate Angie's list for the fair and honest reviews we receive from our customers. Unfortunately, this review is one of them. There are a few times we have dropped the ball, but with each of these we work together as a team to improve our quality of service. Very shortly after this review we reached out via phone. A message was then sent to this member apologizing for the lack of performance. With the letter, a discounted proposal. We appreciate this member's feedback and respect their frustration. I would like to stress that each of our employees take their work very seriously. There are faces behind this company name, and it is our job to make our customers happy with any service we provide. When a customer is unhappy, we will always try our best to remedy their particular dissatisfaction.

They came and reviewed the work to be done. The proposal and effort presented exceeded our needs at the time, and we decided to not proceed.
Description of Work: The Healey Company proved to be a high-end provider of services. The work that we required did not dictate the degree of workmanship this company can provide. We opted for a provider that could provide a scope of work than met our needs and was more within our means.

I purchased a "deal" from Angie's list for 2 hours of roof maintenance. I called the company and scheduled a date for them to come out. They arrived promptly and were pleasant. They told me my chimney needed to be repaired and that there were several issues with it. I asked them to provide a quote... and then I never heard from them again. I even followed up! They did not explain clearly what they did for the 2 hours and I do not feel that I got my money's worth. Further, I am shocked they never provided me a quote for the additional work on the chimney.

During a heavy rainstorm, I heard water dripping through my walls! I called and they came right out and checked it out. I had holes in my box gutters and the previous roofer had done a poor job on the shingles and my awnings needed to be re caulked. Because of the weather, it took about 6 weeks for them to come and complete the job. I was very happy with what they did and, I believe it fixed the problem. It rained today and I didn't hear any noises in the walls. I'm hoping this fixed the problem.

This review necessarily relates to both the Healey Company and their designated architect for the proposed project, David Morgan. Owner Michael Healey responded promptly, looked at the area in question and generally considered the option of building in a full or partial bath. Possible changes to the adjacent kitchen were also discussed. He outlined consultation fees for drawings and actual cost estimates. Payment to his company and to the consulting architect (approximately 2X Healey fee) was required by contract in order to proceed with any "feasibility period" work. I wanted to meet the architect who was to draw up plans for the bathroom before committing to a long working relationship. Unfortunately, I was never able to meet him in the subsequent months despite emails and explanations. No other architect was offered. Project was canceled. Mr. Healey did agree that his company might install the bathroom after my own architect drew up plans. Since I am familiar with their work, that might happen in the future.

This was not a professional design process, although the people involved are very nice and well meaning. Michael Healey had persuaded us to pay for the upfront design of a new guest bath on the basis that the design would be thorough and professionally done, also pointing out that we would own the final design and could then hire anyone to do the project. Having been through such a process before for a much more complicated project (an entire home renovation), the glitches and oversights in this guest bath design process were unexpected and disappointing. Considering that other contractors competing for the job had provided the upfront design at no additional cost, we had expected much better service and closer attention to detail throughout. The good news: Michael refunded the design fee.
Description of Work: Measured and developed alternative preliminary designs for the additional of a guest bath and closet to our guest room at the price 690.00.

We greatly appreciate Angie’s list and this process of gaining honest feedback. Unfortunately we have to disagree with this client pertaining too some of the statements above. After Entering into the feasibility period, which includes design and cost estimating, it became clear that this client and Michael Healey had a much different perspective. Upon recognizing this, Michael Healey promptly and politely informed the customer and removed our company from the process. We also provided a full refund.

slow to schedule, but professional. Once they did come, they did good work, but most things we were hoping to have doen were considered repair not maintanence, so more work still to be done.
Description of Work: Bought the big deal for roofing maintainence. They appearantly sold a lot, and it took a while to schedule. I had to contact them several times and they responded. The worker who came was nice, and did some work, and gave us an estimate for repairs. The experience was, for the most part, pleasant. The roofer and his son were easy to talk to and they seemed genuinely interested in repairing the house properly. The only thing I had a bit of a problem with is when I wrote the company to describe my house I told them it was steep and had slate and when the roofer came he said he couldn't do much maintenance because the roof was slate and it was too dangerous to walk on. Had I been really banking on them giving the roof a thorough look through I would have been very upset to find that they couldn't perform the job that they advertised. Luckily for me they were able to hit the problem areas with sealant because it happened to have been right where the gutters are. I think there should have been more communication about what the roofer could and couldn't do before he arrived.
Description of Work: We decided to take advantage of the sale on winterizing our roof for only $199.00. I purchased the package and within the day had an email sent to me confirming the purchase and asking for details in what kind of roof we had, etc. I sent back the info and was notified that since so many people bought this service, we wouldn't be scheduled until December which was about a month wait. I was fine with this because I anticipated the long wait due to prior reviews. The company sent a letter a few days later verifying the information I gave and to let me know the roofer's name. They scheduled us a few days before they came out which ended up working because I was home completely by coincidence. The roofer and his son were very nice and went out to look at the roof the best they could. We have a steep, slate roof so they were not able to walk around the entire roof. He did however take pictures of what prior roofers had done to a problematic spot in our roof. He explained why it was leaking and gave us several options as to what could be done to fix the leak. He basically gave us the good, better, best options and we went from there. Within a few hours of meeting with us the roofer sent a proposal with pictures of the trouble area and a detailed summary of what would be done under this particular bid. I felt very at ease with this roofer because he is one of the few that we've had look at the house that seemed to genuinely know exactly what needed to be done to fix the house both properly or the quick and dirty method and was quick to point out the difference in shelf life for the various options. We have not chosen to use them yet as we are now thinking about replacing the entire roof.
Michael Healy (contractor) and David Morgan (architect) met with us several time and were quite patient as we worked through at least a half-a-dozen options with detailed drawings before we finally decided on a plan. They worked very well together, and clearly had done so many times before. Michael was very detailed in our planning, making every effort make certain that we understood out options and choices, and tried to leave nothing to chance. Micheal's crew took great pains in prep to cover all parts of our house which were exposed to work. Early on, it became clear that there was an error in the renderings that made it necessary for us to make changes in our plans. Michael accepted full responsibility for the error and met us at least half-way on the additional expenses required to make the necessary changes. Most of the workermen were Michael's employees. The lead carpenter and plaster/drywall man were exceptional. In my view, the lead carpenter is a cabinet maker, working as a carpenter. The electrician, plumber, and tile man were subcontractors. The electrician and plumber did fine work, although they were not as easily available Michael's employed workers. The tile man came highly recommended, but we had some complaints about some of his work (although it's possible that one of his helpers did some of the work). The tile detail accents were not level, but with a simple request from us, Michael had the work re-done correctly. We generally accepted Michael's recommendations on businesses to provide needed materials, such as fixtures, cabinets, granite countertops, and glass. In instances in which we did not find what we wanted with these businesses, Michael was quite happy to work with those we did chose. Because of our satisfaction with the overall quality of their work, we added on the replacement of a double patio sliding glass door. As with all other work done by Michael's crew, the work was first-rate - both the installation, and the finish work. This was the first home renovation we have ever done. When we next have similar work done, we'll almost certainly have Healy Construction do the work for us. Positives for Healy Construction are excellent responsiveness, a stated and true desire for the customer to be satisfied, a refreshing habit of taking responsibiity for his crew's and subcontractor's work, and exceptional quality of work. In addition, when we upgraded some items from the standard quoted in our contract, he did not increase the contractor's fee. The only negative is overall price. However, I am quick to add that we were well aware from the outset that Healy Construction would not be a "low bid," and we quite willingly paid above " low bid" for what we believe was excellent overall value.
Description of Work: - several meetings with contractor and architect to examine options for building out master bedroom suite - combined two bedrooms and existing bath into new master bedroom, walk-in closet/dressing room, and bathroom; bathroom new from studs up: new cabinetry, plumbing, double-sink vanity, "two-seater" whirlpool tub, walk-in shower with dual showerheads, custom tile and detail work - created large double window in place of single smaller one - replaced five additional windows - retrofitted new soffit vent - installed "cathedral" insulation in attic - installed new double sliding glass patio doors - retrofitted new exhaust fan in existing non-master bathroom - repair of old crack in plaster of family room ceiling

I was dissatisfied with the men who came to do the work but I was very happy with the office workers who I spoke with and also the owner who followed up when I didn't get the work done. The men came to the house to do roof maintenance and I had only needed some shingles replaced- the other areas of maintenance offered in the deal were not needed. I had already called the company to confirm that this was an option and I was told it was. But the men who came for the work told me that I could not substitute and if i did want shingles I would have to supply them (another thing I had checked before purchasing the deal and was told differently by the office). Then the man who went up to the roof told me I would have to put an entire roof on and he would be happy to give me an estimate. I told him I would take the estimate and just figured I would have to lose the $200 I paid since no work was getting done. About a week or so after they came out (and the date on here is an estimate- I had a lot of different jobs going on with the house being sold) the owner of the company called to see what was happening. When I explained to him the miscommunication and that I would have not purchased the deal if replacing shingles wasn't an option, he offered me a $400 credit for any job I wanted to have done. I already had finished most of the repairs on the house at this point, and the only job I needed besides the roof was some cement work in the basement. The price they gave me, even with the $400 credit, was more than I could justify putting into a house about to be sold so I never had the work done. I really appreciated when Mr. Healey called for the follow up. He was sincerely interested in fixing the situation. I felt I was heard and that the problem was being addressed. Although I essentially spent $200 for nothing since I never used the credit, it was a lesson learned. If it is not spelled out in detail in writing in the Big Deal, it is most likely not an option no matter what the person answering the phone says.
Description of Work: I had purchased a Big Deal from the Healey company for 2 hours of roof maintenance. The roofers came out and looked at my roof and told me I could not replaced the shingles which were broken but that I would need an entirely new roof. I was selling my house and only needed the few shingles replaced and since they refused to do the work, I did not have the work done. There was a major breakdown in communication between the office (which I had called to confirm replacing shingles was an option of the deal) and the roofers who came.

I think that any type kof contract work purchased on Angie's List deal is not a real deal in that the money spent on the original deal is not really accountable in the repair/contractor's price. So I bought $400 worth of roof repairs for $200. Basically the $200 was for a quote to repair the roof. Not really a deal there. The contractor, The Healey Company did a very good job and Mike was very knowledgable and did a good job. I would recommend them and I will use them when the roof needs to be replaced. Anyone getting a "deal" for contractor's work is essentially paying for the quote. That is not a deal. But I do appreciate Angie's List for the reliable contractors.
Description of Work: Replaced leaky roof vents (2) and re-did the roofing under the vents. Vents used were screened in so that birds could not nest in them. Also repaired a section of the roof that had buckled up due to sheathing.

First of all, I would like to thank this member for the good overall review given! To further explain, this member did purchase a Big Deal through Angie's list for 2 hours of roofing maintenance. When our roofing staff arrived at his home it was apparent that there was much more work that needed to be done to his roof in order to protect his home from further damage. When this is the case, we give the customer an option of forgoing the roofing maintenance until a proposal is received. When we send out the proposal we generally add a credit worth the Angie's List coupon value. Should they choose to accept the proposal, and begin roofing repairs, the coupon value is applied to their balance. If they decline the proposal we revisit their home for the two hours of maintenance and prioritize the work that needs done. After reviewing this members file it became apparent to me that we had made a mistake and neglected to apply the coupon value to his balance. I personally called this member and rectified the mistake. We like to have happy customers, we like to be fair, and we do give free estimates!!

Had a leak on the roof over the kitchen. He found where some cracks in the bricks and filled with caulking, moved debris from the back side on the bigger chimney. Made recommendations on the chimneys, both need repaired. submitted a price to repair the smaller chimney which I thought was fair but I have decided to wait and get a second quote. Also included in the quote was removing tree branches close to the house and garage roof.

Needless to say, I did not hire this company. I got an independent contractor to do the carpentry (and electrical work) for about 1/3 what Healey estimated, and have hired a different roofer to fix the roof. I contacted Healey originally because I liked the idea of one company that could fix everything. I had plans for painting and floor refinishing next year as well. And their website indicated that they welcomed small jobs as well as big. Not true.
Description of Work: I contacted the Healey Company at the same time for 2 different jobs - a small electrical job and a ceiling and roof repair job. An estimator arrived fairly promptly to look at the electrical issue, agreed it was an electrical issue, and said he'd have the electrician contact me. That seemed like a waste of everyone's time. Why didn't the electrician come in the first place? Anyway, the electrician never did come or contact me, despite my contacting the office a second time. A carpenter did come to look at the ceiling issue. He seemed quite knowledgeable. He said he'd send an estimate on the ceiling repair and that the roofer would have to come look at the roof issue. The roofer never did come or contact me. In the meantime, an astronomically high estimate arrived in the mail. When I asked, via email, why the price was so high, Mr. Healey said, via email, that they might have to replace the entire ceiling. The carpenter had certainly never said anything about that, nor did it seem likely to be necessary. I commented back, via email, that in that case, they should have given me an estimate covering the different contingencies - ie - different prices depending on how much work they had to do.

The estimate was about $10000 for gutting. The owner of the company Mike Healey came out to look at the project himself and later gave us an estimate for gutting as well as replacement of fixtures in the bathroom. The other project that we asked him about after he had come out, he did his thinking about it partly from photos that we sent him. He suggested that we meet with an architect to discuss what should really be done. We decided not to use him because we didn't like the way that the final estimate was done, which really was not an estimate nor even an estimate of how much it would cost for the architect, it was based on percentages. It was like, the cost of the architect would not be more than a certain percentage of the whole project and how much do we really want to commit, it was kind of confusing.
Description of Work: We got an estimate from The Healey Company, Inc for bathroom remodel. We asked them to do two different things, one to give an estimate just for fixture replacement in the bathroom, gutting and replacement of everything and the other one was to consider enlarging the bathroom.

Company sent several people to the house and they were finished in no time. Did roof inspection and gave us a fair estimate of how much longer we could expect the roof to last. We subsequently contacted Healey for an estimate on external painting but did not hire because their estimate was more than twice as much as those of others we approached. Perhaps our job was not large enough for them.
Description of Work: Bought a promotion for 43 percent off of roof repair because of missing shingles.

Additionally, an employee named Logan was very efficient with communication - she allowed me to ask questions and was extremely timely in her eresponses.
Description of Work: One of Angie's Big Deals - roof maintenance. The main roofer not only did the job I requested but also sized up a lot of issues that needed addressed ASAP. I appreciate the quality of work I received and plan to use them for that work.

got estimate, will not hire due to excessive cost
Description of Work: called for estimate on small roof leak. They did not respond until rain stopped. two men spent 45" on the roof taking pictures. They said the leak was small although' there was evidence of it on the damage to the bedroom ceiling and wall. They said that I am facing severe future damage due to a lack of "silver" paint on a small strip of roof paper and that they would add that to the leak cost. Several days later the estimate came by mail at nearly $1400.00. I believe that the estimate is ridiculously high.

Response from The Healey Company Inc
This member contacted our company on the 24th of October and requested an estimate. We provide free estimates. Due to Hurricane Sandy there were a very high number of calls at this time. Even with the volume of requests, this member’s roof was inspected as soon as the rain let up (for a short period) on October 29th. Our proposal was drawn up and sent to this member via e-mail as well as regular mail, the very next day. As a company, we do not risk the safety of our workers for any circumstance, and will not expect our roofers to service a roof in the rain. The “silver paint” this member is speaking of is actually an aluminum roof coating that is used to preserve flat roofs from the elements. This member needed a large amount of repairs in order to prevent further damage to the building. In short, a free service was provided in a timely manner.
