Outstanding! Same day emergency service! From the moment Dave returned our phone call to the minute Matt left our home, we were treated with respect and kindness. Matt patiently explained every aspect of this service call - from the paperwork to the mechanics of explaining how the motor was malfunctioning. A true professional - Matt was excellent ! Other companies should follow the example set by Phillips' for its customer service and its quality of service technicians. Superior people and work! Thanks.

The technician was called because our AC did not cool the house well at all (this is an older home that we recently purchased). He performed a thorough cleaning, inspected all components of the HVAC system, made a few adjustments, and replaced a filter. He noted that he got the unit running, "as well as a 20 year old unit can run." The life expectancy of the unit is only 15-20 years. He quoted us a price for a new unit that sounded very reasonable. He was there for about 2.5 hours. Since the service, the unit has been running better, but not perfect, which is to be expected. I will call this company to replace the unit when it becomes necessary. He was on-time and professional throughout the visit. The price seemed fair.

The service tech, Matt Pellegrini, arrived promptly, and was very courteous and knowledgable. He took care and time to diagnose the problem, explaining solutions which work best. At no time was pressure placed upon us to chose the most expensive solution. The problem was solved quickly, most efficiently, and at a reasonable cost. We will have him back for routine maintainance of our heating/cooling system.

Jack gave me a detailed estimate and spent a lot of time explaining things to me. He went out of his way to customize the plan. I told him I was usually cold and used a space heater all the time. He proposed adding a new hot air vent and cool air return to heat up the corner of the living room where I sit. There was a very reasonable charge to this and I agreed to it. This impressed me with his attention and concern The installation went well and the workers were neat and professional and cleaned up after themselves.
Description of Work: Jack and his team installed a new furnace with a humidifier, air cleaner and a new duct with a new forced air vent and a new cool air return.

I called Phillips early on a Wednesday morning when we woke up to a cold house. They were quick to respond and arrived on time a few hours later. Originally, the serviceman (Dean) changed a few fuses and the furnace popped back on. He then gave me the choice to complete the job there or continue to give the furnace an overview. Because I knew the unit was older, I asked him to continue. After a few moments, he noticed that the model had a cracked heat exchange and told me it should be repaired. He then patiently let me see every crack so I was sure he was being honest. He quoted me two units, and again patiently explained the differences between them. After I decided, he called the company to be sure it was available and scheduled the gentlemen for the next day. The installers were equally polite and went through every detail with me before starting work. The new furnace took only a few hours to install and I was back at work at noon that day.

The AC compressor would not kick on. I called a couple of other places but they were all too busy to come in the next day. That was understandable since we had an unusual heat spell. I called Phillips and they were able to come the next day. They called in the morning, as promised, to give me a specific time. That turned out to be just a few minutes later. Matt showed up, very professional. I informed him that I had installed a new thermostat in the winter and it is possible that I made a wiring mistake. So first thing he does is inspect the wiring and sure enough one of the wires was in the wrong place so he fixed that. He then went to the basement and inspected the fan and furnace and filter. He recommended a filter change. After that he inspected the AC unit outside and made sure the refrigerant charge was good. In all the service was prompt, professional, and reasonably priced. A good experience and I would recommend them.

I called Phillips Heating and A/C for an estimate of a new installation on central air conditioning in a home that already has forced air heating. One of the trickier elements of the installation was assessing the best way to install a forced air return into the second floor. Jim Phillips was at my house within 2 days. He spent a significant amount of time assessing my property for size, quality of insulation, and asked all the appropriate questions about my budget , what are plans were for AC use, and how we imagined the house being upgraded in the future. He was straightforward about what we did and did not need, and never tried to upsell us on unnecessary equipment. In fact, he talked me out of more expensive equipment, stating that we would not see a return on our investment because we don't plan to live in the house longer than 5-7 years. Just as importantly, Jim took great care in assessing the best location for a new air return and took the time to explain the pros and cons of each option. Each was well thought out. And instead of offering me a system "on the spot," he went back to the office and compiled a formal, well-explained estimate based on objective measurements. I received several estimates, and ultimately decided on one as well-thought out from another company. Both were competitive, and I have yet to have the work completed, so I hope I don't end up regretting my decision. I am confident that Phillips would have performed the work to my satisfaction, and would have addressed any issues that might have arisen along the way. They obviously deserve the "A" rating they have on Angie's List. I recommend contacting them when considering service on your property.

Jim Phillips walked us through the different options available in our home, and came up with a competitive quote. We elected to go with the split heat/AC system due to cost, and the availability of the federal tax credit. The work was started and completed on the scheduled dates, and the two installers did an excellent job. They were courteous at all times, and made time to explain what was being done. They were meticulous in all of their work, and made sure that everything was done as I wanted. They cleaned up as they went and left our house spotless when they were complete. Once complete, I contacted Jim for the certificates for the tax credit and he sent them over with a copy of the receipt of sale. I was very happy with the whole experience, and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone in need of a professional A/C installation.
Description of Work: We had two split systems installed late in the summer this year. Each unit provides both heat and A/C, one was installed in an upstairs bedroom, and another in the downstairs living room/kitchen (open plan). External condensers were set on prefabricated concrete slabs in our back yard, and all exhaust water was directed down existing drainage channels.

Work started (on time) ? and both my wife and I very pleased with the progress and professionalism of the crew. Our furnace upgrade went smoothly and the difference in our house was astonishing. The new Carrier system was so much more quiet than our previous appliance. The crew started the next day on the attic system and had several challenges along the way (our house was built in 1905 ). But they stuck with it, never complained (in front of us) and delivered our system as promised ? though the project extended several days longer than scheduled ? but on budget. I?ll point out how professional and personable the crew was while in our home. We stayed out of their way as much as possible ? and in return the crew were very respectable when we needed to work from out house. We were comfortable letting them have access in and out when needed and enjoyed having them in our house. I was very appreciative that the job was started when scheduled and the crew came every day until completed (over 10 days). It was especially appreciated as the weather had turned sharply cold and it was the days leading to Christmas) I have only two criticisms of the entire project: Jim?s responsiveness was a little slow to set a start date and send me a written estimate with the scope of work. In fact ? had it not been for the many other positive reviews on this site ? I probably would have scheduled with one of the other contractors ? who continued to contact me and offered to meet the price. I also understood, at year end and with Federal tax incentives expiring ? this was likely a very busy time for HVAC companies. And? ? The crew needed much access in and out of crawlspaces ? and those spaces were dirty from coal burning from year's past. I wish they would have laid tarp over my carpet on the third floor. It ended up pretty dirty during the job ? as a result the carpeting will need to be cleaned. However: I am very satisfied with the quality work done, the professionalism of the crew, and the value of the project. I would recommend Phillips heating for similar projects and have done so already. Good luck on your project and I hope you are summarily pleased when its completed
Description of Work: I was looking to install a supplemental heating/cooling system to my 3rd floor finished attic (which did not have any existing duct-work) -- and to extend heating/cooling into a small 2nd floor room (also without existing ducts). I had already talked to several other HVAC contractors - and settled on a plan to install a heat-pump w/ aux heat supply in the crawl space over the plastered attic ceiling. All of the HVAC companies pointed out that my primary 18-year-old furnace was oversized for the existing supply/returns. Though not in my original scope or budget -- I considered both projects. In the end: I did decide to complete both projects (replace my furnace with a 95% two-stage high efficiency model and install a heat-pump, and air-handler with supplemental heat for my attic). Jim Phillips and I made an agreement by phone on cost -- meeting me at a price that I thought was reasonable and fair

The contractor was a little late for the estimate appointment, came down in price to beat my best estimate and was able to schedule the install in 4 days due to a cancellation. Installers were on time, and friendly. There was some delay because of some confusion over which A coil was to be installed, but the work was completed same day. Afterwards was told there would be a follow up appointment for a technician to come out and fine tune the system, the follow up technician was on time & friendly also. My only gripe was there was some confusion over getting that appointment scheduled and it didn't happen until 2 1/2 months later. Overall a good experience. I will have them bid on the job whenever my furnace needs replaced.

The owner (Jim Phillips) came himself to the house. He spent 2 hours with us and asked lots of questions about the age of the building, when the windows and doors were replaced, and numerous other factors that would affect what system would best meet our needs. Then he explained the various options in detail, including the relative costs. When I asked about the value of duct cleaning, he was informative but surprisingly non-pushy. He described the process, but said outright that he didn't think we'd really see much benefit from it. Because we called just as the weather was about to change, I was concerned that we'd be without heat for some time, but he arranged for the crew to come the next day. They finished the whole extensive job in 2 days and cleared away all the debris afterward. A week later they sent someone to calibrate the system and get the necessary information so we could qualify for a rebate from the manufacturer. They were great.
Description of Work: Phillips replaced our heating and whole-house air-conditioning system, including removing all the old duct work and equipment and even took away a very heavy water softener that was left from the previous owner.

The guys came a few minutes early and got straight to work. They did an excellent job moving my radiator, however they left about 2 inches of pipe sticking out of the floor where it used to be. I called Kevin at the office and told him that they basically left the job unfinished. He immediately made things right and they were out the next business day to remove the pipe, which took all of 5 minutes.

My 25 year old air conditioning unit stopped functioning on July 7th. I called Phillips that day around 9:00 PM, and they sent someone out the next morning around 8:00 AM. The technician told me exactly what was wrong, and said it would cost around $400 to fix it (which is reasonable given the age and the parts required). He did mention that the unit was old and on its last legs, which I knew was true from the home inspection anyway. So I decided that I wanted to replace it (he suggested this might make sense, but with very little pressure). He scheduled a replacement the next day. The contractors did a great job, and the system has worked extremely well. Everyone I worked with from this company was friendly and knowledge.

Had touble getting anyone to the house to have my air conditioning even looked at. Called Metro air/heating first and that will be the last! They never even called me back. Very un-proffesional. Bad buisness. Then i called Phillips'. They said they would call me back the next day and they did. They came that day fixed the problem and Wes their technician was absolutely great. Good company. Good buisness. Good people. They have my buisness. Thanks Phillips' air/heating. You restored my confidence. Well done.

My family had been without air conditioning for well over a month and after doing a lot of research and attempts to self service the problem (ie replacing filter, etc.), we decided to have someone come and look at our unit. We built our own home and the unit is only (5) years old and the manufacturer of the unit is TRANE. I researched various HVAC companies on Angie's List and after reading really good reports about Phillips AC, I assumed that they would be a good fit and that the price would be reasonable because they do not sub contract their jobs. I contacted the company on 06/14/10 and they were able to fit me into their schedule the very next day at 3:30. On 06/15/10, my husband finished work early, so that he could be at home for the 3:30 appt and at 4:07, we were contacted by the agent to advise that he and his partner were on their way to my house, so they were running a bit late and with this sort of job, that can be expected, so that was not a big deal. My husband briefly explained what was going on with the unit and the agent turned on the AC and went outside to where the unit was located, which was free and clear of debris. He performed a pressure test and determined that the unit was completely drained of freon, which was indication of a leak. He took the cover off of the unit outside looking to see if there was a leak and look in the furnace area inside and told my husband that he could not locate the leak and he would have to do a "Ultraviolet Light" leak search which there would be an additional cost of $678.00 which included charges of $169.00 to install dye into the system and a return trip after (2) days to perform the search at $509.00. They gave me the option that I could have them fill the unit with freon but there was no guarantee that I would have any left the very next day and to replace the freon the associated cost would be $760.00 which included 8 lbs of R22 freon, the first 1lb at 119.00 and $79.00 per each add'l pound; and recharging and changing the filter dryer. So far, with this repair quote, the cost is now at $1,438.00, not to mention that any replacement of components or repairs will be additional, which opened discussion for the suggestion of a new AC to which they could give me a quote because they are a authorized dealer for Carrier. All of the above charges and recommendations were written on my invoice. They spent a total of (1) hour in my home doing a pressure test, advising us about the cost of freon, educating us on TRANE products and trying to sell us a Carrier AC unit. He even suggested going back to the builder/subcontractor who put in the unit because he had believed that this was not good and we basically had a crap product. He also advised that he would call us back in (3) days from the date of the original service call and we have yet to hear back from him. Obviously my husband and I were not happy about this and decided to contact the subcontractor who installed the unit. On 06/18/10, the owner/agent came to my home, did a Nitrogen Isolation test, which immediately indicated where the leak was, which was a small leak outside a sealed joint. He resaudered the joint, filled the unit with 8lbs of freon at $22.00 per pound, leak tested the system by leaving the vacuum on for 1/2 hours to which there was no leaks. The total cost of this small repair, was $271.00 which included the freon, labor and travel charge. He was very nice and very professional and told us if we had any other problem to give him a call. I cannot begin to express how grateful my husband and I were to have the unit fixed, but how fair this one man band was; but also how angry we were to think that there are companies out there that try to take advantage of consumers through overinflating repair prices in attempt to lure customers into buying something they either don't need or want. I was very disappointed with the outcome from Phillips AC. Even though they may feel justified in their cost quotes, I as a consumer enacted the Latin phrase "Caveat Emptor", "Let the buyer beware"!!
Description of Work: A pressure test was done on my air conditioner which indicated that the unit had no refrigerant at all, which lead everyone to assume that there was a leak or a bad unit. This was the only test performed and the remainder of the service call was spent discussing our service options. We were given an itemized invoice which included the recommendations and we were charged $79.00 for a service fee.

We wanted someone who could come asap. When the unit first broke, Dave (a senior manager) himself came out on a day's notice to diagnose the unit. He spent no less than 1.5 hours picking apart the whole thing, testing every wire and every part, and putting it back together meticulously, even though it was defunct and wouldn't ever operate again. He seemed very patient and good-natured, as if he enjoyed his job. After informing us that the unit was dead, we contacted Metro, Restano, and Schultheis for other estimates. Metro and Restano got back to us right away with appointments for the same day, but Schultheis couldn't do it until the next day. Restano's was the cheapest, then Philips, followed by Metro. However, Restano and Metro didn't have availability for doing the job until the next week, whereas Philips still had an opening for the next day. So we went with Philips, and we were comfortable doing so because of our experience with Dave, who seemed very competent and trustworthy. Dave even called in advance to say that the workers would be wearing plastic booties to cover their feet when in the house. He also called in advance of the workers arriving. They seem to start punctually between 8-8:30 a.m. On the first day, a man named Donny was there. He has had 17 years of experience, but more importantly, he seemed like a genuine hardworking guy who enjoys working and dislikes sloth. He also apparently handles eight kids by himself and walks to/from work every day, in rain, sleet, or shine. At some point while carrying the old AC unit out, some freon dripped on his face, stinging him, but he was all smiles. Injuries seem to be a fact of life for them, and their attitude seems to be to just wrap up any cuts with electrical tape and get the job done first. They covered the carpets with cloth and were careful bringing supplies in and out. The two men, Donny and Ed, got along like good friends, patting themselves on the back. More importantly, they seemed like the types to not let any hitches disgruntle them. Our job happened to be hitch-free, luckily enough, but if there had been, it seemed as if they would have just set themselves to figure it out instead of complain and delay. I was expecting two full days of work, but both days ended around 3 p.m. I think they allow more time in the event of "hitches," e.g. wires suddenly breaking. The first day they had to go out and fabricate some ductwork. But every day they cleaned up after themselves nicely. Throughout the whole time they were courteous and trustworthy. By the end, they weren't impatient to go. In fact, I had saved up all my questions for the end, as my two kids were finally asleep for nap. They were happy to linger and answer them. I paid at the end, via credit card.
Description of Work: Diagnose the problem with an AC compressor unit that wouldn't turn on (it made a popping sound, with smoke) and was tripping the circuit breaker. Subsequently, replace both the compressor and the air handler. (Only the compressor had broken, but they advised to replace both due to 1. age and 2. the fact that new refrigerant is being used, which might be incompatible with the old air handler.

I called to have someone check my hot water heater and Phillips came out the same day. The service man thoroughly checked my tank and my water lines. Then he completely drained my tank and refilled it to see if the problem cleared. It didn't, in fact the water looked worse. He told me the inside liner had probably rusted and then went over all my options in detail. He also said I could wait and see if the water cleared during the rest of the day. I chose to have a new 75 gallon tank installed and Phillips was at my house the next morning. The installation crew was thorough and hard-working. They explained everything to me before they left. And, something I have never experienced with any contractor, they left their work area CLEANER than they found it! I definitely would not hesitate to call them

Came home from work on the night of the 1st to no heat (52F inside). The boiler pump was running but the pilot was out. I started calling at 4:45pm & left messages with several other heating outfits including the one that had installed the boiler (in 2003) and replaced the thermocouple (in 2006). But not the company that I had come out to do a clean and check in October 2009 (was not satisfied) Referring to my Angie's List newsletter, I found Phillips Heating and they actually had someone answer the phone. Wes arrived within 2 hrs and was polite and neat. He answered my many questions. Upon locating the thermocouple he showed me what could be a contributing to my problem. The thermocouple was cross threaded/jammed into the pilot assembly. Wes feared forcing it out may break the assembly & we would not have any heat. Instead he cleaned what he could. When he blew black dust out of the orifice I became even more upset with the "service" that I received in the fall. I explained that we were having problems with the pressure above 30psi & the relief valve never blew. The other outfit had told us to quit looking at the guage or the guage was broken. Wes explained that the expansion tank not only need to be drained but that it needed to also be filled with air. He got everything back together & fired it up. Wes then sat down & explained in detail the work that needed to be done & itemized it all. He showed the cost difference with their 1 year service aggreement & without. We happily chose the service agreement. Once the parts came in a few days later he returned to do a proper clean & check, replaced the pilot assembly with new thermocouple & relief valve, & drained the expansion tank. We are so very pleased with Phillips Heating! They are our only heating service!
Description of Work: Follow up to emergency service on 2/1/2010. Replaced pilot assembly & thermocouple. Replaced pressure relief valve. Cleaned and checked boiler and drained & charged expansion tank.

Our furnace was having a problem kicking on and so we called Phillips Heating & A/C. They were able to quickly come out the same day we called for servicing. Dean came out and inspected the furnace and found the flame sensor was cracked. He replaced the sensor and cleaned the furnace. He did a good job explaining everything to my wife and was able to quick fix the furnace. Additionally, we had him install an Aprilaire humidifier system which was definitely needed for the house. Overall, he did a great job and I would recommend and use them in the future.
Description of Work: Furnace servicing / inspection - fixed flame sensor, cleaned burners & pilot. Installed Aprilaire system

They came out for a diagnostic and then I didn't hear form them for an extended period of time. After my contacting them, they said they were moving offices which may have lead to the confusion. When they came out for the repair, they opened the box and let me know someone put in a used part. They came back for another trip and repaired the electric air cleaner successfully.
Description of Work: They repaired an electric air cleaner.

They have several offices around town. I think they do a good job so I guess they're an A. They are responsive; when I call them, if they can't get out the same day, they definitely get out like the next day. I'm on their service contract so they send me a card to remind me of a spring service that I always need. I would continue to use them.
Description of Work: I use them for heating & A/C service. They installed a new control board in the furnace in September.

I needed next day service to have my AC unit properly unhooked from my house. I had a separate contractor coming in the next day to dig up some concrete, on top of which the external AC unit had been sitting. I left a voice message the day prior, and received a call back the next day. I was given a price over the phone, and paid exactly that much to have the AC unit disconnected from the house so that it could be physically moved by the concrete contractors. The contractor showed up and unhooked the unit before I got home from work.
Description of Work: Coolant from Central AC system pumped back into external AC Unit. AC Unit unhooked from electrical connections and copper coolant connections.
