+ 0 moreWe chose this company when our furnace broke down because they had such good reviews. Got an immediate callback (it was a Sunday) and the engineer on duty was able to make a recommendation. They gave us the first appointment the next business day, carried out a thorough review and recommended us some options for fixing/replacing the furnace. We decided to replace the furnace, they returned and conducted a thorough and professional consultation during which they got us to a good level of understanding of our options, which enabled us to make a good decision. The work was scheduled within a couple of days of the order being placed. When the team arrived they found that the hot water tank had cracked too! They were able to get somebody out that same day to replace it, so the whole thing was done with a minimum of fuss. What I particularly liked was the fact that they were willing to explain everything thoroughly as they went along, so we have a high degree of confidence in the work that they did. We have no hesitation in recommending these guys.

+ -1 moreBoth furnace and AC were 25 years and we did experience some trouble with the AC. The furnace was inspected. The tech showed me a couple of problems and an obvious leak did exist. He told me it should continue to work for now but somewhere in the near future it will require a costly repair or replacement. We decided to take care of things now. They did a complete evaluation and gave us an estimate we also had two other estimates done before deciding to go with Phillips. They arrived on time did a good job of installing the equipment. The next day another plumber came out and inspected everything, set up all the necessary parameters for the furnace with the new thermostat. We have had no problems. The plumber is to return this April or early May to run through a complete check of the AC.

He was really good. My technician had been with the company a long time and he had a lot of experience. He was very consultative on how I could improve my system without forcing me to do anything.

They were flexible about the scheduling because I had scheduled a morning appointment and forgot that I had scheduled a doctor's appointment. They worked around my time. The tech, Matt, was great to work with; he accepted our description of the behavior and what we'd already tried, and explained why the problem we saw would cause the furnace to shut down. He was very explicit about what to expect next, who was going to call us about the part and how to reach them if we had questions. He explained their flat pricing policy, which I think is a good thing. He outlined our options for maintenance contracts since we hadn't had regular service for the furnace in a few years, but he didn't try to pressure us into it. On the second visit he also checked the air filters and explained why it was important to change them, but mentioned that we might be able to find the filters ourselves and save a service visit. He was good at helping us understand the furnace and suggesting things we could do ourselves to keep it working. I definitely would work with this company again and request this technician next time!
Description of Work: One of our two tandem furnaces wasn't working during a cold snap. I called a few top Angie's List providers and Phillips answered the phone first. Since we had adequate heat we scheduled a visit for the next morning. (We have forced air and a large hundred year-old house.) The office gave us a rough timeframe for the visit (morning = 8:30 to about noon) and then they called to let us know when the tech was on his way and he arrived about a half hour later as they said. The technician (Matt) assessed the furnace and decided we were probably right about the problem (we'd done some troubleshooting ourselves before calling, and one part was obviously broken). But he said our furnace was uncommon and nobody carried the parts locally, so they'd have to order the part and it would take a few days. He advised us to leave that furnace shut down to avoid wear and a possible CO hazard. That afternoon Dave from the office called with a price and delivery estimate on the part (Monday, about 2 working days). The part came in on schedule and we got it installed the following day (Tuesday) - the same technician came for both visits. After installing the part and resetting the system, the furnace still showed an error code; the tech waited for it to go through a heating cycle for several minutes and get into a normal state (the error code eventually stopped). The furnace was making a strange clicking noise as it started up; the tech monitored it while it ran and compared it to the tandem furnace to decide the motor was running hotter than it should. He said that it might be a sign of worn bearings and that it would eventually fail. He wrote down all the details so that they could let us know how much it would cost to replace the part - we might decide to do it as preventive maintenance, or if it breaks down later we'll have the information to order the part ahead of a visit. There was a $79 fee for the first visit, but a $25 Angie's List coupon (which the tech reminded us of). The second visit was $199 as quoted (for the part and installation). I don't know if these prices are high or low but they seemed reasonable to us!

+ -1 moreOur furnace started making kind of a strange noise right after Christmas; I looked on Angie's List and found that Phillips had a coupon for an inspection. Since we bought the house less than a year ago, I had no idea how old the furnace was or when it was last serviced. I called Phillips on a Friday and they had someone out that afternoon; they called before they came and were very professional and friendly. The technician explained what was causing the noise (exhaust motor) and also said that the furnace was 19 years old. He said he wouldn't recommend replacing the motor in a furnace that old. After conducting this thorough inspection, he found a crack in the faceplate of the furnace and explained to me what that could mean (i.e we needed a new furnace). He took the time to write up a detailed estimate and price quote, telling me about a rebate that we could get through our gas company as well as interest-free financing through Dollar Bank. He also said they would credit me the cost of the inspection coupon if we replaced the furnace. We elected to go ahead with the replacement; the people at Phillips were so helpful in walking me through the Dollar Bank credit information and on a Wednesday, we went ahead and scheduled the replacement for Friday even though I wasn't going to have the Dollar Bank card until later (they confirmed my approval). Two gentleman showed up promptly at 8am on the day of replacement and could not have been nicer or more efficient. From what I could tell, they did some pretty extensive work in running new piping, replacing the thermostat, etc and they were in and out quickly. Overall, the entire replacement took from 8am until just before 1pm. They were clean, efficient and friendly and we will definitely call them in the future.

He also pointed out some other issues with out venting . He gave us information regarding services Phillips HA/C offers and provided a lot of information about furnaces and rebates available without being too sales oriented. Furnace was cleaned up and he performed services reasonably, neatly and within 2 hours.We purchased a service contract (Which was paid for by our Angie's List Coupon !) We will see Phillips again in the spring for our AC check up and Cleaning (1st one since home was purchased, 11 years ago), part of our service agreement.
