Excellent. PEI scheduled the job to finish my kitchen and spent six days redoing and finishing the entire kitchen project that was left a mess by another contractor. Work included: finishing tile flooring, finish pantry shelving and painting, install back-splash, cabinet crown mold, cabinet toe kick, cabinet knobs, paint kitchen walls, finish tile floor in pantry and kitchen entrances, redo all crown mold on kitchen walls, redo electrical work, etc. The previous contractor really made a mess and these guys corrected all the problems and did a first class job. The crown mold was installed perfectly in every corner. I would highly recommend PEI to do any home project. I cannot give the price for this job since it was was contracted through Lowes and price included materials and prices from the first contractor.

PEI was amazing! The team was professional, timely, master craftsmen, and flexible. I was hyper-sensitive about dust (from prior contractor), but PEI said not to worry and they were right! Every night you could barely tell they were there; everything was vacuumed and cleaned. They answered all of my questions, were patient while I took numerous pictures, and they always ensured we were in agreement with every step. Yes we ran into some unexpected issues when we opened the walls and floor, but it's an old house and we had a contingency. The kitchen is fabulous. Wish I could attach pictures! When we began gutting the bathroom, the prior contractor work was horrific - PEI 'made it right'. They hired plumbers and electricians, all inspections were passed with flying colors. The bathroom is also fabulous! KUDOS to Pete, Ben and everyone of the team that made this a successful project.
Description of Work: Kitchen full gut and remodel then Bathroom full gut and remodel. When I began the kitchen remodel, I asked the foreman Pete to take a look at the bathroom; I had just had it remodeled by another contractor and was seeing issues. He agreed there were issues, and we agreed to a full gut and remodel.

It did not go!
Description of Work: After waiting a week , Phil, who claimed to be the boss, came and took a long time going over the work in detail and said he would have an estimate to me in a few days. He took a copy of the specifications which he and I agreed to. Over the next two weeks and three phone calls to him with no response, a woman named Courtney called and left a message on the Voice Mail that Phil would not give an estimate because the "job was too pieced out" "too chopped up", which he never mentioned when he was here. There were two bathrooms in the job. He wasted three weeks of my time and progress in my home; he should have just told me when he arrived that he preferred not to bid on this job. Terrible manners. Waste of time.

I looked at the job on Wed. April 3rd at 8:00 am sharp. It was for 2 small bathroom remodels. The first one consisted of some very unusual parts of work that needed done. The customer was going to paint this piece of wood, but not that, he was going to reuse this but not that, and it was a very cut up job. The customer wanted us to put wood ( bead board ) in his shower, and we have never done that in 25 years of business, and we wont start now. He wanted some kind of pieced together box built around the plumbing, and again, I wont do that kind of work. The 2nd bathroom didn't exist. He explained he wanted walls built and the drain lines run & water lines run in an attic. When i informed him that i had to pull permits for this bathroom, he said no one else that looked into the job said you need to pull permits & he didn't want them pulled. I told him they were mandatory, put my notes away, told him i had to leave, and left. I called Allegheny Plumbing Department after I left to confirm that I needed to file a plan permit for this scope of work, and we indeed need to do just that. After that phone call & the " cut up " nature of the job, I decided I didn't want to do the work. It did not take 2 weeks to call him back, my office called him back on April 9th and left him a detailed message which (Member name removed) repeated the details of in his complaint filed with Angies List. My company pulls permits for every job we do, and instead of making this customer fell better knowing that, he was very opposed to it. I do not want to work with customers that dont want to pull permits for their jobs. It simply means that they want to cut corners from the start, and based on our experiences with customers who go into a job with that mentality, I simply choose not to work for customers like that. Im sorry that (member name removed) felt his time was wasted, but it was not 3 weeks. There are times when I am in a customers house and the work that they want done is pieced together ( at best ) it is awkward to tell a customer that. I try to do the best that i can, and if i fell short of (Member name removed) expectations, then i am sorry. What is even more disturbing to me is the fact that some other contractors went into his home & are going to do this work with no permits. Good luck

This company is particularly frustrating to work with. They don't plan very well, so the costs increased dramatically during the course of our project (we had 32% overrun from our original quote). They will tell you that no one knows what you need until you get started, but two other contractor quotes anticipated the additional items that PEI failed to notice in their original quote. The items in particular were leveling the floor (an additional $2,700), plumbing the walls ($1,700) and removing a false ceiling ($450). Our house is 1900's era, so we and other contractors always assumed our walls were not plumb. The false ceiling can be detected visually by comparing the ceiling height with the remainder of the first floor, or inspecting a crawl space up stairs. In my opinion, PEI just didn't care to get their quote right in the first place. As a home owner, however, if your quote is too low, then you may not have sufficient financing to cover the complete project. When an issue was identified, we had 24-48 hours to confirm payment or they threatened to walk off the job. The quality of the work was generally good. They only roughed in the drywall and they didn't paint even a primer coat. Also, the subcontracted plumber bored a large whole in one of our floor joists that clearly violated the residential building code. PEI and the plumber both were unaware of this particular code. I had to send copies of the code and pictures of the bore hole to PEI and Home Depot and I had to continue to demand the issue be fixed for a period of two months before they finally sent someone out to fix the problem, which consisted of installing a 2-foot section of 2x4 and having a structural engineer certify the work.
Description of Work: We purchased a "Home Depot" kitchen and PEI was assigned as the general contractor. They gutted the kitchen to the wall studs, removed the ceiling and flooring, and installed drywall, tile, and cabinets for a 12x12 space.

First correction - the ( first ) bid that was sent to the the customer on 4/9/12 showed on page floor in clear type " the floor is 2" out of level over 12 ft . the customer was notified from day one & was repeatedly asked what he wanted to do about his - long before the install was bought. He did not want to address it at that time. we proceeded in the bid process. the bid was changed by the customer 4 times before the final scope of work was agreed upon. on every one of those revised bids, there was a statement saying " the floor is out of level by 2" ) 2nd correction - The false ceiling was in place and we didn't care if we drywall'd over it or up to the original ceiling. We presented the removal of the false ceiling framing as an option that the customer chose to go with. we didn't twist his arm , we didn't " make " him do it - quite frankly we didn't care either way. The customer wanted the increased ceiling height , so he decided to have it removed. There were cast iron stacks & hubs that stuck out of the wall above the false ceiling that NO ONE would have known was there, and they had to be addressed if he did not want them to stick out into the wall ( again above the false ceiling framing ) They were discovered after the bad plaster was removed from the ceiling. That was part of the original bid. There is no way the the other contractors would have known that those stacks & hubs would be sticking out of the wall. Customer's response to me at the time was i should have known that this was there because we have worked in the area many times and we have done so many kitchens that I should have know this was there...that's just not a reasonable expectation. 3rd correction - the plumber did not bore a large hole in the joist in the basement - he simply drilled it 1/2" to high not leaving enough meat on the one joist. this is for a 2" drain line, not a main stack. the holes were bored through numerous joists , and we passed the plumbing inspection that took place by the Allegheny County health Dept Plumbing Division. The fact that one of the bore holes was 1/2" to high did not seem to cause any alarm whatsoever from the inspector. The only person that was alarmed by it was Customer and his engineer friend whom we had to pay $190.00 to sign off on the repair ( a 2 x 4 ) so in the big picture, according to the code book, the bore hole we drilled for the 2" drain line was drilled 1/2" to high in the joist. We paid Customer's friend his fee and moved on. The lack of communication we feel resulted in the fact that throughout the entire process, we had to communicate by email or phone. the customer was not present during 95% of the install. I will be as clear as possible - The false ceiling did not need to be removed - it was an option - the walls being out of plumb by 1" - 2" is not something you can tell when cabinets are in place - if the other " contractors " knew in fact that his walls were that far out of plumb, I wonder why Customer didn't bother to share that information with us ... that doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. We feel the work in the kitchen is done very well. the new drywall is finished smooth & clean - it allowed for the customer to paint successfully, and the cabinets & general construction work that was done is very good. Im glad the customer is happy with the work. The issue with this customer was in fact the add ons that occurred. He was told that we needed the add ons signed for or turned around in 24 + / - hours or we would have to pull off the job. he was given the option of getting other prices, and we would return after someone else did the work. We NEVER told him either sign or we are pulling off of your job ( eluding to we would not come back ) that is not how I do business, and that is not how Home Depot does business. It is Home Depot's policy that every change order or add on must be gone over with the customer, signed & paid for before we can proceed. This protects the customer, and protects PEI & Home Depot. PEI does not get paid until we have completed certain portions of the job, and those require us getting a waiver signed by the customer as well. If there was an issue, the customer shouldn't have signed the release waivers. I steadfastly deny that PEIC or Home Depot " strong armed this customer " - I don't operate that way, and neither does Home Depot. We have been installing kitchens & bathrooms for 23 years , and we have installed over 5000 kitchens. we have an A+ rating at the BBB and currently have a 9.72 survey score from the jobs we have done for Home Depot. We average between 6 - 8 kitchens per week & 2 bathrooms per week. We pull every permit that needs pulled , we carry 2 million in insurance, and we have been Home Depots authorized installer for 15 years. We are not by any means perfect, but we are good at what we do. What I will tell you is we would not be working for Home Depot for 15 years if we " strong armed " customers. End of story Im sorry the Customer and his wife are upset by the process. I hope they will at least be able to enjoy there very nice new kitchen.

I made 3 trips to the customers house and this customer changed her design numerous times. That process took 4 months. I made every attempt to keep track of all details. I went over the final scope of work with this customer and she agreed to it. She then gave me the deposit. As far as cleaning up , this customer NEVER said one time in the emails she sent or the messages she left or the times she called our office ( which were numerous ) that we left he house a mess. As a matter of fact , when i was at the house ( numerous times to check on the work ) she never said anything to me either. If this was such an issue , why were we not notified ??? The kitchen is connected to the living room & hallways with no walls to section it off - the only dust that occurred in the house was confined to that area. The only issued that occurred during this entire job was that the laminate counter top company messed up the laminate counter top 2 times. When I was notified of this, i got involved and tried to get this straightened out for the customer. The counter top was ordered through Home Depot, and they have to make this good for this customer. We did not have anything to do with making this top. We have installed over 5000 kitchens , and we have this process down to a science. This includes our bid process which is why this customer stated in the very beginning of her complaint that we had control of all details. That is simply the truth. we did not " miss " anything on the scope of work that was presented to this customer. Our bids are itemized down to the receptacle and gone over with the customer prior to the sale of any job. We did take a deposit that covered the cabinets & held money until the job was completed. There was then additional work that was added by the customer, and we have since completed that. If this customer was not 100% happy with our work, why did she pay us in full ??? Again, the only issue remaining is her counter top issue which we have absolutely nothing to do with.

It was a horrible experience throughout. I've never dealt with so many unprofessional people in one organization.
Description of Work: PEI replaced our kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts as a subcontractor to Home Depot. Of the two "workers" who came the first day, only one did any work, and I overheard him explaining the most basic procedures to the other. The other's main job seemed to be to carry the doors from the truck, up the deck steps, and into the kitchen - two at a time, necessitating more than a dozen trips. More than half of the doors didn't fit, and the drawers looked like the old fronts had been removed with a hatchet. After several visits from the original measurer and two more sets of installers, all of whom constantly criticized and blamed the others and said they "no longer worked there," we at least had all of the openings in the cabinets covered up. However, we then hired someone else, at a cost of $150, to try to fix some of the drawer fronts that were crooked and didn't close properly. He also tried to fix one of the cabinet doors that was no longer closing evenly, but it turned out to have warped since it had been installed, one of three doors to have that problem. When I called PEI one more time, someone did come out (who of course told me the previous people were "no longer working there" and said the problem wasn't warping (which it obviously is) and that new hinges would fix it. He said they were really busy and wanted to know if he could come back "on Saturday." That was 18 months ago, and I've never heard from anyone. I don't care any more, but I haven't bought anything in Home Depot since then, and I've told everyone I know about my experience with PEI.

Horrible experience. We asked PEI for a quote for an entire kitchen remodel but informed them upfront that we were considering doing much of the remodel ourselves, and that we simply needed their help on removing and reinforcing a load-bearing wall. They said they were fine with this, that they could provide us a line-by-line estimate and we could pick and choose what work we wanted them to do. We were satisfied with their very affordable estimate, so we decided to move forward with them for just removal of the load-bearing wall. After several back-and-forths via email (hammering out the contract, etc.), they pulled out at the eleventh hour. We had the unsigned contract in hand, ready for us to sign and return to them, when the owner informed us that they were "primarily a cabinet installation company" and were not interested in doing our project after all--this after they had promised us almost a month earlier that they would be fine with doing just the wall removal. At this point, we had already closed the door on other contractors and were bumping up against a major deadline--the arrival of our first child. The kitchen was the last step to make our new home ready for move-in before our baby arrived, and the whole affair with PEI set us back almost 4 weeks since we had to go back to the other contractors we had closed the door on, request that they take us back, and wait for our name to move back up to the top of their priority list since they had (of course) filled the time with other customers. I would NEVER recommend PEI to anyone. Terrible, terrible, terrible experience.

WE WERE ASKED TO COME OUT AND BID A KITCHEN PROJECT FOR THE MEMBER'S. WE DID THAT. THEY THEN WANTED TO CUT OUT SOME OF THE WORK, AND WE DID TELL THEM THAT THEY WOULD BE MORE THAN WELCOME TO DO SOME OF THE WORK TO SAVE MONEY. WE ARE A KITCHEN INSTALLATION COMPANY THAT DOES INTERIOR FINISH WORK. THEY THEN INFORMED US AFTER A WEEK FROM NOT HEARING FROM THEM THAT THEY JUST WANTED US TO JUST REMOVE THE WALL. I WENT BACK TO THEIR HOUSE TO LOOK AT IT AND THE AFTER THE CUSTOMER HAD REMOVED SOME OF THE THINGS THAT NEEDED REMOVED, WE WERE ABLE TO SEE THE WALL AND WHAT MIGHT BE INVOLVED. I THEN RECEIVED WORD THAT THEY ONLY WANTED US TO REMOVE THE WALL, AND INSTALL THE REQUIRED SUPPORTS, AND IT WAS AT THAT TIME THAT I DECIDED AGAINST DOING THE JOB DUE TO A COUPLE OF THINGS. 1. I WAS NOT THRILLED ABOUT THE EXISTING CONDITION OF THE BEARING WALL SUPPORTS & TOLD THEM THAT. 2. I WANTED TO DO THE ENTIRE JOB DUE TO THE UNCERTAINTY AROUND THE BEARING WALL. IT WAS MY DECISION TO MAKE, AND IF THAT MAKES ME A BAD CONTRACTOR, THEN SO BE IT. I DID NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT EVERYTHING THING ELSE WAS TAKEN OFF OF THE BID, AND WE WERE BEING ASKED TO DO JUST THE BEARING WALL. ALL OF THE PROBLEMS & LIABILITY LIES IN THAT WALL SITUATION, AND THAT IS THE REASON WHY WE DID NOT DO THE WORK. THE CUSTOMER WAS NOT LEFT HANGING. WE CALLED & TOLD THEM IMMEDIATELY. IT'S FUNNY HOW FACTS SEEM TO GET CHANGED TO FIT A STORY.

AFTER REVIEWING THIS JOB, THE KITCHEN WAS INITIALLY DESIGNED INCORRECTLY BY HOME DEPOT. AFTER DOING EVERYTHING WE COULD TO REMEDY THIS PROBLEM, CABINETS WERE FOUND DAMAGED. HOME DEPOT REQUIRES US TO CHECK IN CABINETS BEFORE THE INSTALL, AND THE CABINETS WERE NOT DAMAGED AT THE TIME OF INSPECTION. WE HAVE STILL NOT FOUND OUT HOW THE CABINETS GOT DAMAGED. OTHER THAN THAT, THE ISSUE WAS WITH THE HOME DEPOT DESIGN, AND THE FACT THAT THE CUSTOMER WAS NOT HAPPY THAT A JUNCTION BOX WAS CUT INTO HER CABINET. WE EXPLAINED THAT WE COULD NOT BURY A JUNCTION BOX DUE TO CODE, AND THE CUSTOMER TOLD US THE WIRES WERE DEAD. THEY WERE LIVE, AND WE HAD TO LEAVE THE JUNCTION BOX THERE. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS JOB WAS SIMPLY THAT THE KITCHEN DESIGN FROM HOME DEPOT WAS NOT TO HER LIKING.

He made a point of bragging about the wealthy clients he had, showing me a photo binder of very fancy kitchens he had done. Perhaps he decided our job wasn't expensive enough. But not following up with a potential customer is very bad for a business' reputation, and I would dissuade anyone from using a contractor that behaves this way.
