OLD DAD SHOOK CONTRACTING INC.

After a bad winter with some issues with ice dams, decided we needed to get some gutter work and new downspouts and also had a chimney contractor no show so had to find another to do the work. Called a few places and had quotes from Old Dad Shook and another place. Old Dad Shook looked to have the better price and seemed to have better reviews so went with them. I had a busy summer so planned the work for fall and had gotten a call in June to start the work but let them know it could wait and I gave them a call in August and they were able to come out a couple weeks later to do the work. The day came and the first day, they worked on chimney pointing and capping the chimneys as well as painting and patching the box gutters. It was a pretty hot day so they spread the work over two days and the second day they took off the old downspouts and put on new downspouts. They did a nice job of attaching everything and setting them up. Unfortunately, we had an issue with the elbow on one of the downspouts on the ground that took some time to get taken care of and also had some leaking still around the chimney with a heavy rain that they came out and took a look at and sealed up the best they could

had to wait a little longer than I expected, but the team showed up and did a very organized process of the work, and completed it in one day.

After scheduling for an estimate, the individual failed to show up. I used a work from home day for their appointment.

My front gutter was leaking and I wanted a downspout extended. The project went very well. I called on a Friday and Jack visited my home on Monday and provided a quote the same day. I provided 50% down and and shortly thereafter his contractor called to schedule a visit to assess the job. A couple of weeks later, the contractor called me on a Friday and asked if they could complete the job Saturday morning. I did not have to be home so this was convenient. When I got home Saturday afternoon, the work was done. It was raining and the gutter was no longer leaking and the downspout was working well. They cleaned up everything so well that I couldn't tell anyone had been working on my home. The contractor called me Monday to go over everuthing that was done and made sure I was satisfied with the work that was done. I would use again and highly recommend.

They are very good. A very reliable company. I've known about them a long time before Angie's List. They have a basic cost for a service call, but it was worth it. They are excellent. The company has a very good reputation from way back. They are fair with their pricing. Their quality is excellent, you can't beat them. They are very responsive and nice to deal with. They came when they said they were going to come, they were punctual. They are very professional. They've always done excellent work. They always did a good job and left people satisfied. They do quality work. If I ever needed a roof that's who I'd call. They wouldn't be in business this long if they weren't good.

They came out promptly for an inspection and quote. Then we had about a month of rain, so I knew they couldn't complete the job right away. When I spotted a few clear days on the calendar, I called them to request a schedule. I wish they had called me for that window, but ultimately, they fit me in, got the job done quickly and even cleaned out a downspout while they were up there. Great work.

They were timely, did a great job and cleaned up.

They came promptly and did the repairs. Fast and friendly service. The roof has been good since then. The price seemed fair, but I don't remember how much it cost.

Couple tiles needed replaced and some flashing work needs completed. Professional, courteous, and prompt. Have had difficulty getting on their schedule in the last year.

The company supervisor is first rate and makes sure that the job is done properly. I have great confidence in Ed. I am very well satisfied with the work done by this company. This is the third time that I have had them do work for me. I will have them back again if needed. There work is guaranteed for one year.

It was excellent! This is the second time I have worked with this contractor, and I would work with them again in a minute. They are fair, easy to communicate with, show up on time, do a good job, and leave things neat.

.Mr. Shook responded quickly for my request for an estimate. I have a very old home in the Friendship section of Pittsburgh with the main roof covered in slate. The old tin gutters had become very bad with several major holes. Mr. Shook explained several possible plans for repairs. After contacting several other companies for bids, I chose the Shook Company and they began work within a week of my signing the agreement and paying the required partial payment. Their workers were friendly, professional and neat. It took about two days to complete the job and all refuse (the old shingles, e.g.) were removed efficiently. Last night there was a heavy downpour here in Pittsburgh and as far as I can tell the repaired gutters performed well. The company provided a guarantee for the shingles and offer a one-time repair service for any future problems if any arise. I was satisfied with this company. The price was expensive for my budget but actually the least of any of the 3 companies that offered estimates. As a bonus courtesy the Shook workers even removed an old, inoperable TV antenna that was attached to a chimney on the roof and disposed of it. I appreciated their help.

The job was done well and when there was a problem with the rolled roof they came and took care of it. I hired old dad shook before I became a angie's list member. My concern is you have to place 1/2 down to start and the balance upon completion, which was not a problem. I know in a few years I will need a new roof and 1/2 down before starting is a lot.

Disappointing. At the risk of receiving a somewhat nasty reply from the company... I contacted them through their website. I received a response fairly quickly via email. We were on vacation so I emailed them the information and told them they could look and give me an estimate. I had not heard back the following week when we returned from vacation so I called and was told they were not sure if anyone had come or not.They followed up the next week saying someone could probably be there on Thursday. They called on Thursday saying their guy would stop by on Friday as he lived in the North Hills. The gentlemen who was to stop by, called me about 3:30 on Friday and told me he had some things scheduled that his boss was not aware of and he could not make it. He asked if since he lived in the north hills, could he stop by on Saturday. I told him sure, we were putting a new floor down in my kitchen and would be there all day. And we were, there all day that is. That was the last I ever heard. He never showed up or called back and I never heard back from the company Maybe this will be considered a "Heresay" phone call also, I don't know. I was excited about having them do the work since for the most part they have a rep as being "Real" roofers and that is what I need. I am moving on and contacting other companies.

One of the gutters was leaking on one side, he came out that same day to fix the leak. He was great.

It was awful. They didn't have any scaffolding, just latters. They eventually did it, but it was just awful. It was supposed to be guarantee. But the roof was leaking and I couldn't get them to come back out. Very unprofessional and their work was very shotty.

I called 20-25 contractors for a roofing replacement job in September to October 2010 and Old Shook Dad Contracting Inc. was one of the few to respond and give me an estimate. The house is a little (2 BR on main floor, 2 BR up) cape cod. The main roof is steep but the porch roof is relatively flat (very slight pitch). They responded quickly only a day or two after I called. They said that although they were busy they would give me an estimate. It seemed like all roofers in the area were busy that year. I talked to the estimator, Ed Runski, a couple times and he was responsive. The existing roof had breaking shingles and looked ragged although no leaks were ever witnessed and no signs of water intrusion existed inside. It also had 2 layers of shingles. The proposed work was to remove all existing material from main roof rear porch and shed. Install ice guard along gutter lines and 15 lb felt paper. Install aluminum flashing, 30 year shingles and an aluminum gutter to front of home. The existing gutter had fallen off during the previous winter. They also were to clean up and haul away all debris. Total cost was to be $9980.00. I almost went with them. The cost was in the middle of the 3 estimates. I ended up going with someone else because they were just because they were a little cheaper and were highly rated on flat roofs especially. Since the porch roof was relatively flat and the other guy was supposed to be a rubber roof expert I went with him. These guys were very friendly and I would not hesitate to go with them or seek another estimate from them in the future.

The week following his inspection/estimate was forcasted for good weather. He said he would be in my neighborhood working on multiple small gobs, so he would do mine then. He didn't show at all that week. When I called and left messages, they were never returned. After a few weeks of no reply I had the work done by another contractor.

Not happy with the companies business practices, scheduled an appt for Friday to come and clean my gutters. 10 minutes before arrival time I recieved a phone call from someone identifying themselves as an estimator saying "minimum of $350.00 to walk in the door" and was informed that they could not guarantee the job woule be done on Friday. Minimum charge could have been discussed when scheduling the appointment, not 10 minutes before arrival time.

It did not go well overall mostly because it never went! That is to say, an employee named Bill was supposed to come to my house on two separate occasions. The first time he called me in the morning of the day he was to come. My phone was in the other room and I called him back within 20 minutes, around 9 am, and by the time I called him he had decided that he could not see me for the estimate today. That was disappointing and slightly annoying insofar as I planned my day around the "sometime in the afternoon" time block he had allotted me. But fine, we rescheduled for today, Wednesday the 16th, between 12 and 3. Lo and behold I call at 2:30 to see if he is still coming and it turns out he had penciled me in for Thursday. He admitted he must have gotten confused with the dates. (I know I didn't because I put the date on my calendar as I spoke to him after the first missed meeting.) I am not going to sit around and wait another day for this company.

For what it was, it went extremely well.

Overall, the roof and gutter work went very well. They worked very quickly and efficiently. I was pleased with all of the work and the only negative was that some of the workman threw cigarette butts on our gravel backyard during their lunch breaks. Unfortunately, we later discovered this after they left and we had to clean them up . Had I known at the time, I am sure that this could have been easily fixed by talking to the foreman who had been very accommodating to all of my requests.

I contacted over 10 contractors. Most either said they were too busy or did not reply. Only 3 responded and came to see the roof, including Ed Runski from Old Dad Shook. He was personable and accommodating. Unlike the other contractors, Ed said he would remove the old roofing material. He was also the only one who used a 3-ply roofing material called Flintastic, although he said they often use only 2 of the layers. Flintastic does not require a torch for installation, and I learned through an on-line search that it qualifies for the energy tax credit if fully installed. Ed's original estimate was for only 2 or the 3 layers, but I requested a revised estimate to include the full 3-ply installation, and of course the cost went up. I had assumed they would access the roof from my 3rd floor window, but Ed dropped off an extension cord that I put out a window to provide electricity. He had a team of maybe 4 men, and they completed all work while I was at work. Old Dad Shook did a good job.

Overall, I was happy with the quality of their work. They were helpful in giving a bid. They were concerned with the small problems that I had before and made sure that it was resolved. So I had a good experience with them.
