Our indirect hot water tank (connected to a boiler) sprang a leak. We got a few estimates, but Eric Miller was by far the most knowledgeable person and his estimate was in line with others. We are very happy with the work that he did and will hire him again. Eric was very responsive. He returned my initial call within a short time and happened to be in our neighborhood, so stopped by to do the estimate within 10 minutes. He evaluated our entire system and took time to explain his recommendations (all of which checked out in our research). His recommendations were not just to sell us stuff, and included recommending a simple switch of water filter type on the line going into the boiler and hot water tank – filters he picked up and charged us cost for ($10) while he was getting other supplies. His crews were booked for several weeks, but because we had no hot water, he came out and did the install himself a few days later. He did excellent work, cleaned up the space when he was done and explained the new tank and its features thoroughly. Eric takes great pride in his work, holds himself to a high standard and is an educator – all of which we benefit from in high quality workmanship and a better understanding of our HVAC system.

$39 just to show up and a additional $250 for 10 minutes of work. The plumber spent an additional 20 minutes trying to sell me an additional $2500 worth of work. I expected to pay a bit more due to a short turnaround but the final amount was a bit of a shock.

The guy that came to check it didn't know what the malfunction code meant and he called the owner who didn't know either. The owner said he would contact the factory and my husband was shown how to reset the system. We didn't hear from the owner the next day so my husband called him. He said he hadn't heard from the factory yet and would get back to us. We never heard from him again. The system continued to shut down occasionally and my husband would reset it. Finally it wouldn't reset at all. We refused to call Miller since a) they didn't know what the malfunction code met and b) they didn't have the professional courtesy to get back to us. Assuming we were looking at a repair and not a replacement, we contacted several companies who said they didn't service this type of boiler system. We finally found a company that offered to take a look at it. Upon opening the heat exchange we saw that water had been leaking into it and it was completely corroded. We obviously needed a new heat exchange! Miller had done the annual inspection of the system in the fall, which my husband witnessed, and these problems were not present at that time, so we assume the deterioration happened pretty quickly, although we have no way of knowing for sure if there were early signs of a problem during the last inspection. We had always received very good service from Miller in the past but the fact that they didn't get back to us about this potentially serious problem has forced us to cut ties with them. It was very disconcerting to find out that the company that installed a boiler system didn't know how to address the malfunction code and apparently didn't bother to find out. We would think that if they installed it they should be able to diagnose a problem and address it accordingly.
Description of Work: Our boiler system, installed by Miller in 2010, suddenly quit working. We called Miller to check it out.

We called on a Saturday, and most companies didn't carry a 50 gallon tank on the weekends. Eric Miller answered the phone and said they could do the job. We really didn't or couldn't wait until Monday to shower! The serviceman was at our house within the hour and the new tank was installed with no problem

I had a sewer problem. I asked Miller Inc., up front how much it would cost and was told that the plumer would give me an estimate. He also told me I would pay $39.00 to the plummer immediately. The first thing the plummer did was have me inital a contract up front. I have had rental property for 30 years. This was most unusal. I was the told that he wanted $39, $147 to snake the sewer, and an and additional $99 if the service exceeds 30 minutes. My calculation was that this would cost between $200 to $300 dollars. I said thanks but no thanks. I Paid the plummer $39 and called another plummer who charged $125.

Again we called Miller's for advice and possible service with no prior relationship. I explained to Eric what transpired (we had lost heat due to broken furnace and out for 36 hours) and we just had gotten heat back when I called. I suspected that during this ordeal our pipes had at least partially frozen. He took the time to listen to all the details of each of my spigots/faucets and asked me questions to get full details and a**** the situation. I did as instructed but had to leave and at that point my wife called him back for further questions. He happily helped her as well, indicating that we should ensure our hot water heater was functioning (including helping step through verifying) and to keep our water running for at least an hour to brekathtough. He offered to come out if necessary but first thought we would be best served doing this. So we took his advice and had some positive developments with some hot water coming in some faucets. When we called back he again said we should give it more time- through the night. The next day, before we had an opportunity to call he proactively called us to see how we were doing! I thought he already was very generous with his time but this really was above and beyond. It would have been easy for him to come out or subsequently say "I'll come and check to see if everything is OK" after we had positive developments thus having a service call (and I wouldn't have had an issue with it). I have some plumbing projects on my hit list that had not been priorities. I will absolutely not even give a second thought to using Miller Plumbing Heating and Cooling in the future as they've proven to be responsive, helpful and trustworthy.
Description of Work: Our furnace broke and had no heat for 36 hours with outside temps around zero. I called Miller Plumbing Heating & Cooling after a recommendation about concern with pipes freezing. Eric was incredibly helpful in providing information to help out despite no previous relationship. He even returned our calls and followed up without prompting to help.

I came home on a Saturday afternoon to find that my old hot water tank had ruptured and was spewing water all over the basement. I did get the water and gas turned off and had a bit of a mess but no real damage in the basement. I then started the task of trying to find a plumber to come out that day to replace the failed tank. I called several plumbers, including the one that had installed the last tank, but on a Saturday afternoon was either getting no answer or answering machines. I then called Miller Plumbing based on some reviews and the fact that they had 24x7 service. The owner, Eric, answered on the second ring and I proceeded to explain my issue. Eric was very nice and very professional. He presented me with several options and he was very patient discussing them with me. He said he could have someone out within the hour, and we agreed on the tankless system. It was more expensive initially, but since it was expected to last twice as long as a tank, and i'd had issues with several tanks in the past it seemed like the best choice. John, the technician, did arrive right on schedule and began to remove the old tank and old plumbing. Eric came over with the new tankless system and within 4 hours they had the system completely converted over and new plumbing in place. They were very professional, cleaned up extremely well, and made sure that I understood the new system completely. Eric reviewed the operation and maintenance of the new system several times with me, and answered any questions that I had. I would definitely use them again.

The service tech gave me an estimate that was outrageous for the services I needed done which were the following: change a shower head $75, change a drain pan under my washer, run a snake in the bathroom drain to check for a clog. The entire quote came to over $1,000.00. I declined any work be performed & paid over $100 for the service call.

Eric, the owner, gave an estimate for $3200 which I thought was a good price for the amount of work required. They showed up on the date promised and did a very thorough and neat job. I would not hesitate call this plumber again.
Description of Work: I had a sump pump that had been installed outside by a handyman some time ago and there were occasions when it would freeze. I called Miller Plumbing to see what could be done about it. Eric, the owner, promptly came to my house and gave me an estimate to move the sump pump inside my garage. It required digging a hole inside my garage for a new sump pump - digging a trench from my catch basin to allow the water to flow from the catch basin to the new pump - covering the pit that contained the old sump with gravel and cement, - and then installing a new sump pump and backup pump.

Called them to unclog a drain line that I could get unclogged. Was told someone would be there in an hour. They arrived in a half hour. Explained to them the problem and they set up their snake. Snaked line and determined that the blockage was in the sewer main. They only charged me about half price since it would not be something they would be able to fix. I was very pleased with their service and would use them again for any plumbing that is out of my scope. A great local company.

I had noticed that the underground drains for my downspouts were blocked, and a previous inspection by Miller Plumbing with a sewer camera showed standing water in drainpipes along the foundation of my house. If water from a hose were poured down the downspout, it never came out anywhere. I believe that these drains had been blocked for years, and was concerned about water accumulating around the foundation. Milled temporarily moved some small shrubs near the house and with a small backhoe, excavated the drain pipe. The major excavation was about 15 feet long, 4 feet deep, and 3 feet wide. He replaced the blocked underground pipes, and installed a proper clean-out access. He then filled-in the trench, re-planted the shrubs, and smoothed-over the dirt as well as possible so that I could re-plant grass. He did a nice job of cleaning-up and took away any excess dirt. Now, water poured down the downspout comes out where it should. The whole project took about 3 days.

fair and thorough. The work began promptly on the next business day, the heavy equipment was there bright and early. The workers on site were professional and hard-working. The work included ripping up concrete and working on pipes five feet down. They ran into major unexpected difficulties with our structures and worked through it though it cost them an extra day. The repair is good and to code, the cleanup was unbelievable. From beginning to end it was a superb job and I would recommend them highly to anyone who needs serious plumbing
Description of Work: We had major plumbing issues: We discovered that our low water pressure was due to a leak outside the house. It took a week for PWSA to find the curb-stop, and repair the main pipe, but that left a major leak still on our property. We called four companies for an estimate: only two answered, one of which was Miller Plumbing, 3131 Library Road,Pgh PA 15234. Eric Miller sent someone over within hours the same day for an estimate. The other plumber who answered promised someone the next day. Millers estimate was

Jim was a pleasant man, arrived on time, and told us what would be involved with the fix. When he told us the price up front we really should have thanked him and paid the $89 service fee for just showing up. But we had already replaced the wax ring the day before (apparently should have bought a bigger size) and wanted peace of mind for the second replacement to know there wasn't a bigger issue at hand. Miller Plumbing has a price list of services and in my opinion is very overpriced. An estimate to hook up a sink, with everything involved being customer supplied, was $500 so we definitely will not call back or refer their services. We appreciated Jim's candor, quick service, and good work, now only wish we felt the job was worth it. I can only justify the cost with peace of mind, knowing the tenants aren't contaminating the kitchen because they didn't like using the basement toilet.
Description of Work: Water was leaking into tenant's kitchen because wax seal on toilet above had deteriorated and needed to be replaced. Toilet had to be pulled up and reset. It was a Sunday and had a hard time reaching other people in our area to show up on same day. Miller advertises no emergency service fee, although if we thought we could wait until Monday, we would save $50. We didn't have issue with the weekend fee because for us it was an emergency.

Very, very well. Eric found a couple of additional issues and fixed them for free, the entire job took slightly less than a full day, and we were only out of water for about an hour, and hot water for 3-4 hours. He was very polite & professional, and made sure to review and explain everything that had been done to correct the issues we had. He even took time to explain everything twice so my fiance could hear as well; we were babysitting, and didn't want to leave the kids upstairs alone.

After I hand him $40, he walks into my home, and within ten minutes is telling me that my water heating system is "all wrong" and "done completely the wrong way" and that I need a "high efficiency boiler" that "modulates." And for only $13,000 he will install it for me. I haven't yet told him I'm an Mechanical Engineer and have been working in this field for more than 25 years, but I start to ask some pointed questions. (By the way, "modulating" is simply heating at two levels: low and high) So he, with absolute confidence, tells me he has been an expert for 20 years in this field, and then whips out a iPad and start doing really fancy calculations on it. Very, very slick and high tech. But what he told me was complete uneducated nonsense. I later found a solution that worked perfectly for under $1000. This guy is a charlatan. I wonder how many well-to-do people he has ripped off with his slick high-tech sales pitch. I don't know if he is completely ignorant of thermodynamics, or is just trying to sell outrageously priced systems under the guise of "high tech" "environmental" technologies. This guy would have sold me a $13000 system when I only needed a $1000 system.
Description of Work: First, let me say that I am a Mechanical Engineer with 25 years experience working in the field of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. Household water heating is a simple subject for me. We purchased a house in Bethel Park in March of 2010. I installed a large whirlpool bath, and therefore needed a higher capacity water heating system. I did research on all of the water heating options. I was going to install a tankless water heater, so I called Miller Plumbing & Heating for an estimate. This guy returns my call immediately on a Sunday, and says he'll visit and give me an estimate, if I pay him $40. So he stops by within the hour, and first asks me for $40 before saying anything else to me. I pay him $40.

The evaluation and smoke test was a separate visit, and cost $703, which seemed pretty steep. However, they ran the camera out to the street, and showed a lot of separations of the old terra cotta, roots growing in , pools of fluid and sewage in the pipes. The smoke test showed leakage only in the basement. They called back and forth to get an estimate for replacing the system. We negotiated to save one drain that had been added previously from the sink. They were able to start within a week. They came early and worked late, including Saturday. They worked hard, kept the area as clean as could be expected. They were delayed doing the outside work by some rain. but did that well, also. After they had covered the outside pipe and trench, rain that night washed dirt on to the sidewalk, and I slipped on it in the dark, while going to work. I called them later that morning, and they cleaned up the sidewalk before anyone else fell. As per the contract, they did not landscape or seed the area they disturbed and did not replace the bushed uprooted by the work. How hard is it to put down some seed and some straw?
Description of Work: We had had a sewer gas smell in the basement ever since we moved in 9 years ago. It was finally time to do something, especially before we had an emergency, like a break or back-up. We knew that there was no sewer trap in the system. Eric, Ed, and Nick came first for a smoke test and camera of the system. We then contracted with them to replace all of the sewer pipes in the basement and out to the sidewalk. They were able to come the next week to start the work. They dug out all of the sewer and drain pipes in the floor of the basement. They replaced it with plastic pipe of a smaller bore, so it would flush better. They tied in the three toilets and the kitchen sink into the system, as well as tieing in the sink/washer in the basement. They also removed and replaced the old "Pittsburgh toilet".
