They drove a nail through a drain pipe on our project. When we discovered this, they never returned our calls or came to examine or fix the problem. As it turned out, we had to hire another finish carpenter to redo much of their work and fix the various problems created by their workmanship. I would definitely NOT recommend them.
Description of Work: Last Spring, John and his company put in my new copper box gutters. We were impressed with their responsiveness and work ethic. I told him we were looking to finish the small remaining rooms in our basement I showed him the work and asked him if he could replicate the quality of work that had already been completed. He said it was "no problem". In his contract, he said he would do it to "match the existing finished basement". They were polite, on time, and worked hard but before long, we realized that they did not have a finish carpenter on staff. The work was extremely rough, the ceiling tiles were not installed properly, the room wasn't square, and the overall workmanship was inadequate. We told them to leave so we think about it. At that point, we had paid them $12,000 of a $16,000 contract. 5 weeks later our finish carpenter arrived. He found that McLane had nailed through a drainpipe and the entire wall had to be ripped out, then re-insulated and drywalled. The overall carpentry was rough and inadequate. Mitered joints were uneven, the room had to be squared, ceiling tiles were removed and replaced with new tiles, door hinges were not mortised, walls were left without drywall. trim was not installed, window sills had not been finished or installed. There is also concern with the electrical and plumbing. McLane plumbed the utility sink at 22" inches instead of 18" and this cannot be logically changed. We are now forced to purchase additional costly components to have a utility sink at the laundry area. So far, I have paid an additional $6,500 in work and replacement materials, and I have not yet painted or installed carpeting. The project will be significantly over budget now and we are completely unhappy. I called over and over again to discuss the problem and John would not return my phone call. We spoke once before the finish carpenter arrived and he asked that I send him the small remaining balance of $1335 for materials. I did so in good faith, and since then, have not heard a word from him despite numerous and repeated calls. We have given them over 30K in business in 2 years time and he cannot give me the time of day! In addition, I am now questioning whether he would warrant his work on our VERY expensive box gutters. He has sincerely disappointed us, mostly with his non-responsiveness, and if our issue cannot be resolved, I will proceed with my complaint in every aspect. I hope you can help us. Update: Be cautious using this company for remodeling services. If something goes wrong, they are not likely to follow up with any service at all, and in our case, didn't even bother to return our numerous phone calls. We had used them previously for box gutter replacement and some roof repair and were happy with them. They told us they did remodeling, as well. We took a leap, and used them to finish a portion of our basement and that is when the problems started. They do rough finishing, at best. Nice guys -- until you have a problem.
