Description of Work: M J Kelly was the rental agent for an apartment near the University of Pittsburgh. The apartment was rented by my daughter and 2 other friends. When they moved in, we were aghast at the dirty deplorable condition. The front door did not lock, walls were full of holes, filthy carpets, loose & crumbling tile in the bathroom were just a few of the problems. There was mold in the refrigerator and even the oven racks could not be rempoved because of caked on food. We eventually cleaned up the apartment to a livable condition. At the end of the year, we began moving things out of the apartment. I scrubbed refrigerators, sinks, ovens and patched any minor blemishes on the walls. The apartment looked 10 times better than when the girls moved in. Everything was out of the apartment 7 days before the lease was due to expire except for a couch. When we showed up to remove the couch 2 days before thelease expired, M J Kelly had already changed the locks and thrown the couch on the sidewalk. A number of phone calls were placed to M J Kelly Realty explaining the problem and asking Mike Kelly the owner for a return call. A return call was finally recieved days later from Mike Kelly. Mr. Kelly said that the cleaning crew had made a mistake. He asked how much we thought the couch was worth and we told him that it was a used couch but that $100 seemed fair. We also asked that the entire security deposit be returned to which.Mr. Kelly readily agreed. 4 weeks later, the couch has not been returned and a check arrived for $800 saying that $700 was being deducted from the security deposit because of " ...holes in the walls, parts missing from the refrigerator and carpets which needed cleaning". After reading reviews on other websites, it appears that this seems to be a pattern for M J Kelly Realty. This time he had parents who inspected the apartment and took photos showing the condition of the apartment before & after. It looks like we maybe going to court. I would NEVER recommend this charleton to anyone. I have rented a number of apartments and never have had an issue such as this. I find Mr. Kelly's conduct abhorant and intended to prey on college students. Unfortunately for Mr. Kelly, the conversation with him regarding "cleaning the couch and agreement to return the full secuity deposit was recorded.
