I called and explained that the furnace would not turn on. Everyone I spoke with was pleasant, polite, and eager to help. They assured me that someone would be able to come and take a look within a few hours, and the office staff called to let me know when the technician was on his way. He efficiently inspected the furnace and thermostat. He was able to determine what was causing the issue and correct it. I would definitely use this company again in the future. Their responsiveness and professionalism made a potentially stressful situation a positive experience.

Provider came in on scheduled time, stayed for about an hour and answered all of my questions without issues. Did a thorough job and left. There was one thing that did bother me about this service...so I paid 120 for a two visit check-up from the vendor. The only thing that the vendor stated is that we should replace our filter for the unit. Most places will provide the filter for you, but they didn't. Even if they would have put the cheap blue filter in the unit, I wouldn't have seen any issue, but due to not replacing a filter for a HVAC seasonal check-up, I wouldn't rate them as Excellent. I'm building a new house as we speak and am need of a air cleaner and whole house humidifier. I will call these guys to get a quote for the services needed, but i'll also be calling others to see how competitive they are. ;)

The furnace was not working upon waking up this morning. After calling the company, right before the technician arrived, the furnace started to work. However, he reviewed the systems of the furnace (for 1 1/2 hours) and didn't really have a cause for the problem. He mentioned we may need a new motor, but the description of what specifically was wrong with the motor was absent. We arrived home from work this evening, and again the furnace is not working. The problem was not solved nor was it fixed. So we wasted $89 for diagnostics. Now we will need to pay for another company to provide diagnostics and fix our furnace. The positives: The company was able to send someone within 2 hours of our phone call.

Response from J A Sauer Co
Please accept my apologies for not satisfying your needs on the recent service call. This response is an attempt to clarify a few things. You stated that we “didn't really have a cause for the problem”, but on the service ticket that you signed and was given a copy of it stated, “Found blower motor having trouble starting, unit cycling on limit” and a price was quoted for the motor replacement. You decided to forgo the repair and instead were considering replacing the furnace. There was a note on that same service ticket stating that you wanted “a quote to replace the furnace”. If the motor failed again later in the day and you had called we would have sent the tech back out at no additional charge. Our policy is no charge on a return within 30 days. Additionally, we could have done the repair we originally had quoted that you chose not to that morning. I’m not sure why you chose to call another company. I agree with you that the problem was not solved, but only because you didn’t approve the repair quoted. And the purpose of the $89 diagnostic is to “Diagnose” the problem, which we did, the motor was “struggling to start”. If you feel that this does not meet your expectations, I would be glad to talk to you about refunding your $89.00. and again apologize for any poor communication by us. Bob Boyle General Manager

My heat was out when I woke up. I searched the list and started calling to find someone who could come and fix our boiler. J A Sauer had availability and got me on their schedule. They gave me a call with a half hour notice of when the service tech would arrive so I had ample time to come back from work. Bill was waiting when I got there. He was very professional and even put on paper booties while walking through the house. He was able to diagnose the problem and had the replacement parts to fix the problem then and there. He explained what the problem was and what the repair would be. I opted to have him do a full system inspection while he was there and he was able to bleed my radiators, clean out my boiler tubes and heat exchanger. We were very thankful for J A Sauer's quick response as we were leaving for a week the next day and wouldn't have been able to leave the house without heat.

The technician arrived within the time scheduled. He was the first technician to completely inspect my 25 year old Bryant furnace. He inspected the heat exchanger for cracks, and tested electrical parts for correct running amp capacities. He ran diagnostics for carbon monoxide and heat output. He cleaned the fan unit and checked the motor on the unit. Every part was checked from the gas jets to the computer board, to the induction fan, to the heat sensor and the igniter unit. It was the most complete system check I have ever had done on this furnace. I feel confident that my furnace is in good running condition for the winter to come. And the technician was very professional and courteous. He answered all and any technical questions I had as he was performing the work on the furnace. This was the first time I had J A Sauer service my furnace, but it will not be the last. I will be calling J A Sauer for maintenance from now on and in the future when I need a new furnace and AC unit.

Everything went as well as planned. I called Mark and he said he would have Gary give me a call to schedule whenever they could. About a day later I received a phone call from Gary, he talked to me about all that was involved and got me scheduled. The day of service the technicians were scheduled to arrive around 8:00am and they were here promptly and ready to go at about 7:45am. Once in the home they started immediately and had the old tank out by 9:00am and were already setting the new one. They had the entire service from removal to completion done in as little as 3 hours. At around 11:00am they had already had it installed working and left. They explained everything about the new tank and how it worked, showed me how to adjust the heat settings, read the led light on the pilot light and what the blinks stood for. They informed me of my service contact and also how to relight the pilot light if for some reason it was to go out. All said and done they did an amazing job and I couldn't have been happier with the entire service!

I was initially reluctant to write this review even though I was unhappy with the initial services. I have since had a leak in either the condensate or refrigerant line and just spent an unnecessary amount of effort attempt to get a technician here to address it. (1) The price was moderately competitive but we were willing to pay above low bid given positive reviews on Angie's List. (2) Getting the service required that I take off work for two separate visits, one from what I appeared to be a sales rep and a separate visit from a project manager. Each of these visits took a lot time. I typically would not mind if the quality of service followed. (2) The technicians did not fully drain the radiators before disconnecting, spilling water all over the 3rd floor and into the 2nd floor. The technicians did not report this to me. I had to find out indirectly from a painting crew - which included a good fried When I inquired, I was told told approximately one gallon had spilled. However, the water had came through the 2nd floor across a 15 foot span, and I am told plenty more than one gallon was spilled. I had just insulated between the 2nd and 3rd floor and was concerned about wet insulation both performing poorly and/or growing mold. JA Sauer was given the option of replacing the insulation but declined. (3) Part of the refrigerant and condensate line was installed exposed. Apparently I agreed to this, but I do not recall doing so. I had to explain my concern with this to four different representatives. It's frustrating to have to repeat yourself in these situations. (4) I normally wouldn't mention something this petty, but several times one of the installation technicians mentioned how it important it was to be done by 3-330. It was Friday. They started at around 845. (5) Before install started, I asked if JA Sauer would be willing to also install a whole house fan that I had purchased. I indicated it could be done on a time and materials basis given the uncertainty in the scope, but they wanted to provide an estimate. While I acknowledge that there were considerable uncertainties in the preparing the estimate, the estimate for labor alone was $4000. I had the fan installed, materials included, for about $800. (6) Today I noticed either the refrigerant or condensate line is leaking near one of the air handlers. It took me over an hour to connect with an after-hours technician. They hire a third party to receive after-hours calls. The only means of connecting with a technician is for this third party to page them, then the paged technician return your call from an unlisted number when convenient. When I finally spoke with the after-hours technician, I was told he had too many calls for the evening and would not be done "before dark." Thus service would have to wait until tomorrow. I do not know why they even bother with after-hours service... If you hire them, good luck getting help with any subsequent problems. I will mention that the sales representative, Mark, was very communicative and professional throughout these challenges. He was the positive aspect of their services.

Response from J A Sauer Co
I have to agree that we did not live up to the standards we set for ourselves on this job, but I would like to address some of the issues. I feel most of this issues were from lack of good communication. ISSUE; (2) Getting the service required that I take off work for two separate visits, one from what I appeared to be a sales rep and a separate visit from a project manager. Each of these visits took a lot time Our first visit is by the Comfort Advisor, it is necessary for him to meet the customer on site to know what the customer is looking for, their specific needs and wants and also to survey the property to know what we need to do to complete the job. The 2nd visit was with our project manager. This is one of the steps that we feel puts us a level above many of our competitors. The Project manager has the work order of what is to be performed and “lays out” the job. Making a material list and time estimate and looking at all the work that needs to so the he can direct the installers. Both visits take time and I realize you were in a hurry, possibly we could have scheduled for a better time for you so things would not have been possibly rushed and caused miscommunication. But without us coming to your house we could not have quoted the project or laid out the work to be done. I’m sure the other contractors that bid the job sent a person out. ISSUE; The technicians did not fully drain the radiators before disconnecting, spilling water all over the 3rd floor and into the 2nd floor. The technicians did not report this to me The tech cleaned up the spill and felt it was ok. They should have told you. As for your statement, “JA Sauer was given the option of replacing the insulation but declined. “ that’s not exactly the way it went, we relied on your insulator who inspected the insulation that got wet and he said he would take care of it. We asked him to invoice us for the work and he said, there was very little to do (I’m not sure what if anything he did) and said there would be no charge. It was taken care of and we did not decline to remedy it. ISSUE; Part of the refrigerant and condensate line was installed exposed. Apparently I agreed to this, but I do not recall doing so. Again, part of the miscommunication. Our Project manager felt he was clear on this but apparently you misunderstood. ISSUE; Today I noticed either the refrigerant or condensate line is leaking near one of the air handlers. It took me over an hour to connect with an after-hours technician. There was a piece of insulation not properly covering the coolant line causing it to sweat and drip, it has been resolved. ISSUE; As for the “3rd party to receive after-hours calls”, as most contractors that offer 24 hour service, we have an answering service that fields the calls then pages them to the on call tech. Unfortunate a tech can’t always drop what they are doing and answer each call immediately. We do attempt to get a return call as quick as possible. As for the “unlisted number” the cell phones the tech carries are blocked so you’re not trying to call them back when they might be off duty and not answering their phone. By only operating from our main number customers get the best response from whoever is on call. Again I apologize for the miscommunication and can say that the circumstances will be shared with our team to help avoid another instance like this in the future.

I purchased a seasonal air conditioner/heating unit service package through Angie's List. I was happy that the technician was able to come to my residence first thing in the morning at roughly 7:30 AM, as it is easier for me to go into work late, rather than leave work early. The technician opened the outside a/c unit and cleaned it out. He also did several checks on the blower to confirm that it was functioning properly as well. He did confirm what I already suspected, that my a/c unit has a coolant leak somewhere in the system. However, he was straightforward and advised that it would be cheaper to just simply add coolant rather than try to track down the leak. I believe he mentioned that 5 oz of coolant would be free with the call, and that my unit needed roughly 4.8 oz. The technician was very patient with all my questions, and took the time to answer them all. I asked quite a few questions, as the a/c unit is roughly 20 years old, and was installed by the previous owner of the hone. Someone less scrupulous could have probably added unneeded services. However, he was honest and advised what needed to be done, and what should not be done due the age of the system. Since I am seriously considering replacing the entire a/c, blower, and furnace unit, I am appreciate that I was not spending extra money on a system that I intend to replace within the next year.

We called the company after are 26 year old system finally gave up. I was immediately greeted on the phone with a sales rep and he scheduled an appointment for an appraisal within a week. At which time Mark came to the house look at the system and came up with a plan for the replacement. He left me paperwork and emailed the appraisal for me to review, he was very knowledgable about the system that he was selling and was able to answer all the questions I had. Prior to going through with it I shopped around to a few other companies in the area, I found that J A Sauer was the best deal. After accepting the deal they sent out a technician to measure and plan out the system. They we're behind on scheduling, the entire process took a little over a month but I'm glad I waited. It was a two day install, day one was removal, day two was installation. The two technicians were efficient, clean and very punctual, started around 8am and finished by 3pm. The code enforcement officer approved it on the first inspection which was very pleasing. Currently the system is running strong and was a very pleasant experience!

J. A. Sauer Co. installed a heating and air conditioning system for us in September, 2014. Mark came in to give us an estimate and did a load calculation, and recommended we downsize the furnace. We were a little apprehensive at the downsizing but decided to go with Mark's recommendation, but also decided to write this review only after experiencing the downsized furnace after some cold winter days. Well, we've had the cold winter days and can say that Mark was right on; we've had the most comfortable winter in our 47 years in this house. The installation in September went fine, coordination with the office staff was great, the installation techs were courteous and professional, and follow-up during the installation insured that everything was done as had been planned. J. A. Sauer was not the lowest bidder on this job, but we are very pleased and feel we got good value for our money.

The installation of our new gas furnace was excellent right from the beginning. I had five local HVAC companies come in provide estimates. JA Sauer was the only one to take the time to provide a very thorough and detailed estimate. No other company walked around the house to take room measurements and count the various vents. In addition to this, they were the only ones to provide the detail of what all they were going to install. Others just had a one liner quote stating they were going to replace the furnace. JA Suaer was a two page report that detailed everything. I knew exactly what i was getting. With everything they provided, they were the least expensive of the five estimates. They had no problem installing they particular exhaust vent I wanted. Once they were done, Kevin was extremely helpful in explaining everything about the new system and thermostat. They house is much more comfortable now and although is is a big expense, the overall comfort and savings due to the 96% is well worth it

They were prompt to show up for the scheduled appointment. The estimator initially did not understand the scope of work that I had budgeted for and came up with an elaborate idea that included relocating the furnace and other equipment. When I explained that was out of my price range, he measured and re-worked the design to come closer to my price range. I ended up going with a lower quote, but I would consider using this company in the future.

We decided it was time to replace our 25 year old heating/ac unit and fix some ventilation issues in an existing addition that was not properly done by previous owners. J.A. Sauer came and gave us an estimate to complete the work. They installed the new unit in a timely manner, were very professional, did really neat work, and took the time to do everything properly. However, the unit started freezing up. Called for a service appointment and they were able to come the very next day. The technician was prompt and found the fan speed was set from the factory to low. He changed it to high and said it should fix the problem. However, it did not. Made a call for the second service and was again given a next day appointment. The technician took the time to find the problem and after tearing the unit apart found that it had a faulty part from the factory. He drove to Pittsburgh for the part and had it fixed the same day. It now works perfectly. I was not charged any money for the service calls. We do not fault J.A. Sauer for the faulty part but they stood behind their product and did everything they could to make it right. They did what we feel is a huge scope of work at our home and did it neatly, cleaned up after themselves every day, and were very professional.

My whole house air conditioner was not working. I called Sauer to come fix it. Repair man arrived and stated we needed a new thermostat and replaced frayed wires at the capacitor. I went and purchased a new thermostat. Still, the air conditioner did not work. I called Sauer back. They arrived and then stated I needed a new"control panel". A control panel was ordered and replaced for $522.00. The air conditioner still did not work. Sauer then stated we needed a new air conditioning system which would have costed thousands. My wife pointed at the capacitor and said " are you sure it's just not the capacitor, where you replaced the frayed wires"? Repairman stated "no, its not the capacitor, I checked it and it shows its still good." The repairman then showed my wife how he checked the capacitor and determined it was still good. Before spending thousands on a new system that J.A. Sauer wanted to install I went to Grainger and bought a new $25.00 capacitor and replaced it. The air conditioner has worked perfectly for nearly 2 months since then. I spent $522.00 needlessly and almost spent thousands on a new system that wasn't necessary.

The technician serviced my air conditioner and the blower unit. The air conditioner was running but quite a bit of water was condensing in the blower unit. This resulted in quite a bit a water on the floor and eventually created a short which caused the circuit breaker to trip. The technician advised that the unit did not have the proper amount of coolant due to a leak which was causing a cascade of problems leading to all the water. He added coolant, opened up the A/C unit outside and gave it a good cleaning. I was told that the unit was leaking coolant, but the leak could be fast or slow. He was upfront about how much labor was involved in tracking down the lead and how much it would cost. Since I have only been in the home about a year and half and the A/C unit is estimated to be 20 years old, I appreciated his approach as the cost of tracking down the leak was realistically as much as a new unit. After the service call, the A/C is providing colder air, not running as often, and most important not resulting in large amounts of water on floor near the blower.
Description of Work: The company serviced the air conditioner and blower.

My experience with J.A. Sauer and the serviceman, Joe, was nothing short of spectacular. Joe was able to fix a problem we were having with airflow in less than 10 minutes by using a flexible fiberoptic camera to look at dampers in our ductwork. One of the automatic dampers was actually closed even though it was in the open position. Once he fixed this, airflow improved significantly. I'm most impressed with Joe incidentally detecting a problem with our A/C unit because he incidentally touched a refrigerant line in our basement that he found much hotter than it should be. Joe spent significant quality time thoroughly serving our A/C unit and adding refrigerant to our system. Despite the fact that we had paid another company for an A/C tune-up one week prior and that company proved to be incompetent by my standards and basically did the level of A/C service and inspection that I could do - and I know nothing about HVAC. Joe was extremely knowledgeable and taught me a lot about HVAC during his time at my home. I will be calling J.A. Sauer and asking for Joe anytime I have an HVAC issue, and I have signed up for the maintenance plan with this company for my A/C and furnace.

Our furnace stopped working in the evening during the first polar vortex. Called provider to see if someone could come out and fix it. Got callback from technician promptly. He let me know the rates and confirmed we still wanted him to come out. He arrived at the time he said he would. He quickly discovered that the problem was with the thermostat. He offered to sell and install a replacement and we agreed. The technician was a professional the whole time, and I have no problem with him or his performance. My problem is with the cost of the replacement thermostat. They charged over $300 for a cheap Honeywell. It's like the most basic model. It can be purchased to $20 at Lowes/Home Depot. That's more than the $250 I paid for my fully programmable, remotely controllable Nest. Again. the technician did a great job with the service. My only problem is with the insane cost of the crappy thermostat. If the stores weren't already closed and there wasn't a polar vortex I would have not paid for it.
Description of Work: Inspected malfunctioning furnace during the polar vortex. Diagnosed problem with our existing Nest thermostat. Installed replacement thermostat.

Response from J A Sauer Co
Thank you for the feedback. I feel your pain, but whether it is during the coldest/ hottest day of the year or just any day on the calendar we keep prices consistent and fair. One thing I would like to point out is that the thermostats at the big box stores may look similar to the ones we carry and install but they are not the same. We do pay a lot more for the stats. Additionally the price you pay when you have us install the thermostat is not just for the part but also for: • the knowledge of diagnosing the problem, • the convenience of having the part available and able to get you up and running, • the time it took our technician to install, • Along with a 5 year warranty on the part and one on labor all coordinated by us, you don't need to do anything to register. You do get more than if you just walked into a big box store and purchased a thermostat in a box. A trained tech, with a fully stocked truck and the ability to be at your service 24/7 has to have some value. As you can imagine it isn't cheap keeping a service truck on the road ready to serve our customers. No doubt if you knew what was wrong with your furnace and had the time and ability to purchase and install it yourself if would have cost less. Just like buying the ingredients for a meal and cooking it yourself would be less than going to a restaurant. As for the nest thermostat that didn't work, they are marketed very well. When you look at them you feel like you’re getting more than you really do. We have removed quite a few of them that were less than a year old because they don't perform to the expectations. Thank you for the kind words about our tech, we do take pride in sending professionals to take care of our customers. Bob Boyle General Manager
