Services we offer

Home energy efficiency & comfort evaluations. Home energy audits that include infrared analysis and blower door air infiltration testing. Insulation AND air sealing measures for attics, exterior walls, garage ceilings, basement rim joists, and crawl spaces. The primary insulation that we use is cellulose insulation. We are fans of cellulose insulation because it is incredibly effective, less expensive than spray foam or fiberglass, sustainably sourced from recycled newspaper fibers, and completely non-toxic.

Services we don't offer

The job we were contracted to perform was to spray foam the customer's basement rim joists and cantilevered overhang. The purpose was to seal and insulate this area to eliminate air infiltration. This is a job we've done hundreds of times and have a great deal of experience with. Upon completion the customer inspected every square inch of the job. He claimed he could still "feel" air coming in around the cantilevered overhang. When I checked I could not feel any air flow whatsoever (as an experienced energy auditor, I'd like to think I'm fairly adept when it comes to detecting drafts and air infiltration), however I re-sprayed all areas that he questioned, free of cost, to make him happy. When I left that day we shook hands and he seemed happy. He said there were other neighbors in his area with the same issues and that he'd be recommending us. A few weeks went by and he phoned me and said he'd done extensive internet research and found an obscure foam product made by a company in New Mexico that he felt could have done a better job. When I told him that our method had not only solved his problem, but that he could contact any independent energy auditor he liked to confirm we'd used an acceptable product (we use closed-cell foam, widely considered the most effective type of spray foam in the industry), he said that did not matter and that he could "still feel air coming in" and he was no longer happy. After having spray foamed the area in question Twice, and then also hand-packed the small cavities tightly with fiberglass insulation, I knew we had sealed the area and there was no detectable air coming in. He said that the only way he could be made happy was if I paid the $750 for the obscure foam product he'd found online (a product that NONE of the major spray foam companies in Pittsburgh even use) and then came out and redid the job for free. To me this was not only unnecessary, but also unreasonable knowing that I'd already solved his problem. Because I refused to submit to his request, this customer gave me the grades above. As sole owner of Insulwise Energy & Comfort Solutions, I take tremendous pride in the work that my company does. And I will bend over backwards to make sure that our customers are thoroughly pleased with the work we've performed for them and feel they've gotten good bang for their buck! Please see our many rave reviews to see how the vast majority of our customers feel about us! Yours truly, Andy Haak

I called Andy and he came out the same week to give an estimate. He was punctual, polite, and explained everything in detail. Andy explained the importance of insulating junctions of the attic floor, something other estimates did not mention or address. He also provided websites for further information on the type of insulation he uses. He gave us an estimate that same day, and it was in line with other estimates we had received. Within a week, his crew showed up to complete the job. The work was done in the time frame that was previously specified and for the exact cost of the estimate. The workers did leave some stains on our carpet; however, Andy immediately addressed the issue. He hired professional carpet cleaners who came out the following day and completely cleaned all of the spots. I didn't have to do anything other than tell him the issue; he did the rest. Now I am happy to report that our upstairs room is very warm. The difference is night and day, and far greater than I had hoped for. We've already seen a drop in our energy bills. We are extremely happy with the work and the service. I would recommend them highly.

The 2 gentleman arrived the morning of Nov. 11, 2011. When they arrived they introduced themselves and advised they will be preping for a few hours. One of the preparations was to lay the tarp so not to trample anything into my house since they would be going in and out of the house. I have a flight of 13 stairs from the entrance that leads to my livingroom, then another flight of 12 that leads from my livingroom to the bedrooms where the hatch to the attic is. You have to walk around my livingroon in order to get to the second flight. The tarp that was laid covered the entry and 6 of the first flight of stairs. When I asked about whether they were going to lay any more tarp, he advised they did not have any more. I was not very happy with that, but they were already her and they did clean up afterwards. I just had to remove my white throw rug just in case.

As the owner of Alpine Insulation Solutions, I always want to receive straight A's. It was unfortunate that we didn't have enough drop clothes on hand to cover all of the stairs and the hallway. We take great care to look after our customer's homes, but that morning my employees had accidentally left the bulk of our supply at the warehouse. Going forward, we have implemented a policy to ensure this does not happen again. It should be noted however, that all work areas were fully cleaned and vacuumed to the customer's satisfaction before leaving the home. Lastly, although my crew chief should have called and requested that I bring additional drop clothes, had the customer phoned me and shared her concern, I would have promptly delivered more drop clothes to the jobsite immediately. Our customers' satisfaction is always our first concern at Alpine Insulation. Andy Haak Owner, Alpine Insulation Solutions

When doing his evaluation and giving me an estimate Andy noted openings to the attic (above stairs, around ducts, wiring paths, etc.) that needed be sealed before adding insulation. The job also included a surround around the attic pull down stairs and whole house ceiling fan that would provide a thermal barrier when they were not in use as well as a protective shield around the many recessed lights that were in the second floor ceiling to not only keep the insulation from direct contact with the lights but also to seal the openings from potential air movement from the attic. And finally, because I used the attic for miscellaneous storage, a platform was built which allowed me to continue to do so after the new insulation was added. Throughout the job which took two full days, Andy and his crew were very professional. They outlined what they were going to do, called me up to the attic to point out areas of special interest that were being fixed and answered any and all questions or concerns that I had. The guys worked with minimal disruption to the house and were very thorough in the daily cleanup. I think they did a great job and I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I needed attic insulation to be upgraded because my original insulation had settled and was not up to the recommended standards of today, having been installed 30 years ago when the house was built.

It went very well. Andy, the owner, was very professional, informative, and thorough when explaining the work he would be performing. He called to follow up with me and his guys came to do the job precisely when scheduled. He even called back the next day to make sure we were satisfied with the work done. His workers were prompt, polite, and cleaned up well when they were done. They put drop cloths everywhere they would be walking during the course of the job. Overall, we were very satisfied with the services provided and would recommend this company to friends and family. In the event that we decide to insulate the first and second floors of our home, we will definitely be using them again.
Description of Work: The did a "cap job" on our third floor, which was a finished attic but had no insulation. They injected foam insulation in some areas and used blown in cellulose insulation everywhere else. They sealed all areas before insulating. They also did the stairwell leading to the attic.

I was very happy with the service and felt quite well informed and comfortable.
Description of Work: Alpine responded quickly to my request for an estimate. Andy Haak was both professional and knowledgeable regarding the products used and the services provided by his company. Despite the fact that our job was a small one (blowing cellulose into the outside walls of only the front of the house) he took time to thoroughly explain the process and was able to schedule the job to accommodate my contractor's ongoing work at the house. The crew was prompt, courteous and left the worksite cleaner than when they arrived. I will be using Alpine's services again soon when I have the rest of the house insulated before winter and would definitely recommend this company to my friends.

Andy and the crew are excellent. They called when they were on the way to have us move cars from the driveway in order to not block access for us all day. When the arrived they greeted us, introduced us to the crew and went straight to work. We have already noticed that our air conditioning does not turn on as often and the house is cool. It is also much quieter-we live on a main road with lots of traffic. We are very happy with the work done and would highly recommend Alpine for any insulation needs.
Description of Work: Alpine Insulation Solutions removed the last few things from our attic that were too heavy for us to carry. They covered the carpeting with drop-cloths and the crew (3 men) went into the attic and began to prep by spray insulting all of the air space in the ceiling of the entire house with meticulous care. Though this job looked tedious, the men were very thorough. The next step was adding baffles about every 3 areas of roof joists from the vents of the soffit up the grade of the roof about 3 feet (to allow air in the roof, but not into the rooms below. They insulated the areas around the base of those baffles individually. All of the light fixtures were insulated to allow no air flow to the rooms below and the canister lights were boxed with a special material to accommodate the heat from the light but not to allow air flow. Next an 8" high hatch was built around the area of the pull down attic access ladder, then an 8" framing to accommodate the 3 sheets of decking that would give storage space once the insulation was finished. This process took about 7 hours. The next thing was adding the actual insulation material (cellulose, which is a recycled paper material, flame treated and highly rated). The insulation was sprayed in 12" thick, the deck installed and then the men vacuumed everything. A 2" thick very dense foam hatch cover was placed in the weather sealed hatch. Our attic was rated about R4 before the project. Now is it R49.

Upon finishing the work at the customers' home, both home owners seemed very happy with the work and clean up that we'd done. When I first saw this report I phoned her immediately and apologized for what we'd missed. It seems that some dust on the basement floor had been missed while vacuuming as well as a bit of non-toxic cellulose insulation that ended up in a kitty litter box. We strive to be as thorough in our clean up as possible, but from time to time we do miss things. Had I had any idea that we'd missed some spots or had the homeowners asked me to vacuum an area again I would have happily done so. It is my policy for customers to be happy with the work that we do as well as be confident that the clean-up was done to their standards. Andrew Haak Alpine Insulation Solutions

Andy was timely, professional, and in and out of the house within three days. He also properly installed my bathroom vents to the outside, which a previous contractor had done wrong. The house is much warmer and quieter. There is a little cellulose left over which they do the best they can to clean, but people need to be aware that more cleaning is needed-also they patch but do not finish walls. People simply need to be aware of this going in. One of the best investments I've ever made--and to think previously I had no insulation in our house was just crazy.

Andy missed our first appointment because when I first called him he was in an attic and apparently some phone/technical problem happened. We rescheduled and he arrived on time. He explained his approach clearly and in a straight forward manner. Thankfully there were no sales tactics, just description of his work and time for me to have my questions answered. It was about a month from the time I hired him until the time the work was scheduled. Looks like he is in great demand these days. :-) He was in touch with me several times in between. He did need to delay the installation by one day since he ran over on another project he was finishing. He arrived about 30 minutes later than I had anticipated on installation day but there was also an ice storm that morning. Andy and Jeff seemed to work very well together and worked hard. There were a few unexpected findings in my attic and we re-negotiated a slight price increase to make the work more complete. It also took a little longer to complete than originally thought; 1 1/2 days instead of 1 day. But they stayed late and kept working to get everything complete. They did use some drop cloths and did a fair amount of clean up before they left. I had a few ceiling tiles and light bulbs to put back into place. A picture frame was accidentally broken but Andy paid for a replacement. The insulation is doing it's job. The rooms over the garage are now as warm as the rest of the house. I am anxious to see the difference on my energy bill. I would definitely hire Andy again. He impresses me as hard working, honest and finds his work very satisfying.

As a home inspector I see attics everyday. Our recent move had us rely on outside contractors as I work 7 days a week and can rarely do the big jobs myself due to time constraints. We knew that we needed more than the minimal 8" of fiberglass that was in our attic. Andy came as a referral form a trusted contractor friend (A.J. Stones, also an Angie's list member) . Andy and his worker came on time, did exactly what I needed to improve my home's efficiency. They were done in a few hours and you could not even tell they were at our home as it was very clean inside and out. The work looked just as I wanted it and the access hatch was air tight and insulated so my sons room was not going to leak colder denser air and keep him cold this winter or ever again. The home is already more comfortable and after an infrared thermal scan of the home, its looks nice and even just as I expected. Both attics are full and even with cellulose. His prices are excellent compared to other companies and Andy's education on building science is superior to most companies that I have dealt with on the professional side. He understands buildings and energy conservation. I will continue to refer Alpine Insulation Solutions to all of my clients. Thank you Andy!!

The main reason I had this job done was to end an ice damming problem on my roof, and the other side benefit is lower utility bills. I had a few contractors come out for estimates on what they'd do to eliminate my ice damming problem. Each had a totally different idea from electric roof wires, to just soffit chutes by themselves, to totally sealing the attic not allowing any ventilation at all. This lead me to do my own extensive research to determine the right way to solve the problem, and in doing so Andy from Alpine was the only person who's solution fully matched what I researched online. Winter hasn't hit yet so I can't fully comment on the results, but I firmly believe what he did will resolve my problem with the ice damming. Also as a side benefit, I should see at least a 20-25% reduction on my utility bills, and likely higher due to the large number of recessed lights I have which previously were a major source of air leaks. My initial observation is the day they did the work, it was in the low 80s outside, and before they did the job the attic was warm but bearable. After they finished the job, the attic was very hot, meaning the A/C from the house was blocked from getting into the attic, and the heat coming through the roof into the attic was blocked from proceeding into the house. The fan will kick in at 95 degrees to circulate outside air through the soffit vents/chutes so that excess heat doesn't shorten the lifespan of the shingles. I highly recommend if you need any insulation work to use Andy from Alpine Insulation Solutions. He knows what he's doing, his prices are comparable to or lower than others who won't do nearly as thorough of a job, he is punctual, and he doesn't BS you with an annoying high pressure sales pitch.
Description of Work: Airseal attic floor (wire penetrations, plumbing stacks, 12 recessed light fixture housings, etc), install soffit chutes and thermostat controlled fan, ventilate bathroom exhaust fans through roof (previously blew into attic), insulate walls leading to skylights, insulate and seal attic hatch, and blow cellulose insulation to R49. Also airsealed and insulated rim joists in basement.

The work was excellent and performed in time and cost proposed. Both men are hard working and stayed late the second day to finish the job. Andy has great ideas, knowledge, and is well equipped. Clean up was complete. The result was a 20% reduction in air leakage measured with a blower door which is very good since it already was reasonably tight. I think we can look forward to a winter without ice dams on our roof.

They did a really fine job. A fellow came in to look at our attic space first and then our upper story. He made some recommendations and pointed out some problems as well as some issues that we had in the past. He suggested a couple of different ways of approaching it. We also asked him to do some extra things for us. He hadn?t seen them in the initial visit and found them while doing the job later on. We have one and a half story Cape Cod with lot of nooks and crannies and the access is fairly limited as well. So you can never see exactly what?s going on sometimes until you do the work. However, they showed up when they were supposed to show up. They were very polite, courteous and cleaned up after themselves. They stayed on the job remarkably well. They did a good job in a short amount of time. I was very pleased with their work. The fellow we dealt with seems to be up on a lot of the recent information about insulation and also some of the newer techniques of handling things. He didn?t try and talk us into buying stuff nor did he try to cut costs here and there. He knows what he is doing. There was a little trouble with some of his equipment, but he stayed longer in order to get the job done. He is the kind of guy who goes the extra mile. The fellow who works with him has also been in the industry for quite a long time. They make a very good pair with their practical as well as theoretical knowledge. They both have excellent work ethics. They are highly trustworthy and really good about what they are doing. I would highly recommend them and I would also speak well of them. I certainly trust their work. They excel in all categories. We would use their services in the future too. In fact, we are planning to have them do some work in the future with some of the walls in the lower story.

We bought a new house and during the inspection we learned that the hosue only had mimimal attic insulation. I obtained the heating bills for the house from last winter and they seemd high based ont he square footage. I called Andy for a consultation and he came to our house within a few days. He provided a lot of information about his services and a thorough estimate of costs. He seemed genuinely passionate about the benefits of insulation. After discussion, he added insulation to our attic, and added vents so air could escape to help cool our housue in summer (we do not have central air). He also added a vent to allow mositure to escape since the shower fan below was just venting directly into the attic and had no way to be released outside. Overall I am happy with the work. I believe the house is cooller and you no longer feel like you are walking into a wall of heat when you ascend from our first to our second floor. I am looking forward to lower heating bills this winter. Also, Andy went above and beyond by replacing the wood that provided ingress to the attic. The wood piece was old and warp and he provided us with a new one that was also insulated on the inside, so there is a complete seal throughout the attic. He and his partner laid tarps so they did not track dirt or dust into the house, and they vaccuumed thoroughly before leaving. I think they are probably a little more expensive than other compaines, but are well worth it.
