I contacted Insulwise to replace the insulation in my attic. From bid to completion, it was obvious that this company values honesty, integrity, professionalism, and thoroughness. Their quote was lower than the majority of the others I received for a comparable product. I was thoroughly explained all of my options and was provided with a very detailed quote. Andy was extremely knowledgeable and exceedingly passionate about what he does. The job was completed in a very prompt and efficient manner and I couldn't be happier with the end product. I would recommend Insulwise without hesitation.

Andy and his team were brilliant, really, from beginning to end. Everyone we spoke and met with was professional and the engineers certainly seemed to know what they were doing. Andy, in particular, was a wealth of knowledge and clearly quality and a job well done is important to him. Insulwise did an initial energy assessment of our house and gave us a report on where we stood. Based on this report, they gave us an estimate of the work they thought was required. My husband and I were pleased with the 'no pressure' approach and this, combined with the professionalism of the team, was why we initially went with Insulwise. We were very pleased with the team and the work done. The job took two days and Insulwise was great about trying to do the work around our schedules. Everyone arrived on time, the guys explained what they were going to do and why, they worked until the job was done, and cleaned up well when they were finished. There was one slight problem after the first day of work and this caused our lights to short out. We called Insulwise late that night when we discovered the problem and were pleasantly surprised when we received two immediate phone calls - one from Andy and one from another member of his team - to clarify the problem and check there was no emergency. Andy and another engineer arrived the next day, Andy explained what the fault was, and corrected it. We've had no problems since. Since we've had the work done, my husband and I have noticed a marked improvement in the heating and cooling of our house. Rooms that had been cold before the work was done were warm and the heating was more even throughout the entire house. In short, we are absolutely pleased with Insulwise and would recommend this company without reservation! If ever my husband and I buy another house, we won't hesitate to ask Andy and his team back to do an assessment and carry out any required work. We were genuinely impressed with the team's attitude, knowledge, and responses to any questions we had. Andy & co, thank you so much!!!

This was a very big job. We had no insulation in our house and our house has had a long life as apartments and a single family home so there are many interesting areas that get uncovered each time we do a project. Andy and his crew were great about making sure that they found and figured out each hidden or unseen area. We ran across many complications like false ceilings, hidden rooms and some old questionable wiring. Each instance the crew addressed the concern and we found an acceptable solution. The crew showed up when they were supposed to and were knowledgable about the process. I would recommend Insulwise to anyone considering getting insulation. At the end of the process, we walked the entire house with an infrared device to make sure that there were no voids. The team didn't miss anything. Our house is certainly warmer and I think that my heating bill will certainly be reduced next winter. This is a very messy process and requires a lot of clean up after the crew is done. They do a good job cleaning up with a shop vac and patching all the holes, but you should plan on spending the day cleaning all the dust and sanding and finishing the plaster.
Description of Work: isulated the entire house. 4500 sq ft 1905 home. Insulated our entire attic, basement and all external walls. Also caulked all windows and sealed our doors.

We have a 120+ year-old home that leaked air and heat at a healthy clip. We reached our breaking point this past winter and contacted Insulwise for an estimate. They were courteous, no-pressure and responsive to our follow-up questions. I found them to be honest and conservative with their estimates; they didn't promise us the moon in terms of heat retention or bill reduction post-installation. Our house has aluminum siding, which had to be removed temporarily in order to blow in dense-pack cellulose. Low temps make working with aluminum difficult; when the original dates fell through due to weather, Insulwise moved us to the top of their priority list and slotted us in to the next set of dates with decent temps. We found the work crew to be responsive and thorough. If I voiced a concern (be it air flow in the basement or the possibility of leaking insulation into some of our closets), they resolved it without hesitation and to my satisfaction. They left the property cleaner than they found it, and I don't know that I could tell you which pieces of siding they removed in order to complete the job. It was like they were never here. Frankly, they went above and beyond what I was expecting; there were a few hiccups along the way, but none of them resulted in any sort of change to their initial estimate or final bill. If I had another house I needed to insulate, I would absolutely use them again.

The crew sent to insulate our home worked extremely professionally! They arrived promptly each morning, the weather was not on their side , rain , rain , rain they continued to work through the rain , the rain storms continued on the second day. During that second day the steady rain was starting to turn into heavy downpours , they eventually resorted to using plastic trash bags cutting them down as raingear so they would be able to complete the scope of work in the time frame agreed to. At the end of each days work they went over what they had completed, if they had gotten behind schedule or not, and their outline for the next day. Also, they were very careful of our pets in making sure that they weren’t effected by their work. they were very careful when they had to enter the inside of our home to avoid bringing any dirt , mud in . Our home and yard was cleared of any material or waste each day. While not everyone may do this, we allowed them to stage their ladders in our yard at the end of the day. These were always stacked neatly and away from travel areas around our home. Would I recommend Insulwise as a contractor of choice…ABSOLUTELY! From our first contact with them for a quote to the completion they were extremely professional in their manner. Answering any question that either my we may have had whether it was about their material, process, or equipment.

InsulWise and its owner, Andy Haak were incredible in terms of professional background, integrity, thoroughness and human kindness. I had experienced roof damage from the falling of massive icicles from brand new Leafguard gutters, who blamed the problem on inadequate roof area insulation. So I needed to determine whether this icicle formation was due to a lack of proper insulation, as the Leafguard supervisor indicated. Owner Andy himself called and offered to come himself, sooner than the original appointment I had scheduled with another staff person. That was a huge help in itself. Andy did a thorough energy audit, taking two hours, and in the end reported that I actually had sufficient insulation in my roof area, which could not be the cause of the massive icicles. He was kind and patient, answering all my questions, even after it was clear that he would not be making a sale. I learned about his extensive background training in green technologies, and the knowledge and skill his company is bringing to the public. This company is the real deal! I cannot give them a high enough rating!
Description of Work: Provided a free energy Audit to specifically address a concern I had with enormous icicle formation from new Leafguard gutters, with the first (minor 6 inches) of snow after their installation.

Insulwise did a FANTASTIC job from start (information gathering phase) to finish (actual work). They were one of three providers that I vetted to do the job (this after I did research on which type of insulation to do). The representative, Xavier, was prompt, very courteous and had answers to all of my questions. He had visual on hand to show what the blown-in cellulose would look like inside the wall bays. He gave me an estimate on the spot of everything to be done - no waiting. He explained it in layman's terms and was very open to questions as to why their method was better than others. Company President Andrew was quite responsive to calls regarding questions I had as to makeup of certain spray foams and was also very flexible as to numerous changes in the contract as I added/dropped areas of the house to be insulated. The crew showed up on time, lay down protective plastic everywhere and were very careful moving furniture, etc. They worked extremely hard and were very efficient. Andrew showed up to check on progress and to make sure all went well. I am recommending them highly for their work. The house "feels" tighter now and we have yet to turn on the furnace. The insulation is now only energy-efficient but it block out noise. Well worth the expenditure - this is an investment that will pay off in lower energy bills and higher home values.
Description of Work: Insulwise insulated my top and bottom floors of my Cape Cod and the ceiling of my garage (directly below the master bedroom). They also did some framing/drywall around existing pipes that were exposed through the old garage ceiling so they could blow in the insulation.

We recently purchased this home (about 23 years old) and one of the first things we noticed was how uneven the temperature was throughout the house, at least a 5 degree difference between the first and second floors and at least a 15 degree difference between the first floor and our finished attic space. We also noticed that the forced air was much weaker on the second floor and barely noticeable on the third floor. Insulwise evaluated my home for free and provided honest recommendations addressing my concerns. Andy and his crew performed the work over two days. The ducts had a significant amount of leakage equivalent to an 80 square inch hole and after the ducts were sealed, there was a signficant reduction in duct leakage to about 5 square inches. They performed the work in the attic and basement to our satisfaction and cleaned up afterwards. After the work was done, we could feel a considerable difference in comfort in the home. The temperature throughout the home is nearly even and the furnace does not kick on nearly as often anymore. Also, the strength of the forced air in our attic room is immensely improved. When I got the estimate, I thought it was on the expensive side. But in retrospect given what a considerable improvement in comfort, I felt it was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend Insulwise to others.

I was impressed with the service. Initially they performed an energy audit which was free. Then they provided an estimate after discussion with me on my areas of concern. The service was scheduled promptly. The crew that did the work was very professional. They took care to keep the house clean inside. They also cleaned up outside and inside when finished. They also tolerated my cat and energetic dog? I have additional work to be done in the basement next summer after we are sure that I have corrected a water problem. I have no hesitation in having Insulwise complete the tasks in the basement.

The job went well, on time and as estimated for costs.
Description of Work: Insulwise raised the R rating of the attic insulation from R17 to R49 using a combination of green cellulose insulation, insulating board, ceiling light covers, soffit closures and access door covers. Price was competitive but the real value was the team. Nancy fields the initial calls, son Andrew makes the schedule, Xavier visits the house and generates the cost list and the veteran crew off Jason and Brian worked all day to complete the job. The interior of the house was vacuumed and the driveway was decluttered.

....We had contacted the vendor in 2014 regarding their services and how they could assist with our heating and cooling concerns through a wide variety of solutions. Their assessment was comprehensive and pricing appeared "fair" given the statement of work (SOW). Unfortunately, we decided to reallocate funds (other pressing home improvements and unexpected one time college costs), but knew that we wanted to come back to Insulwise to perform the services the following year. In early 2015 we had again contacted Insulwise to obtain a quote regarding our heating and cooling concerns. At the onset of this request they had advised that we could leverage the previous SOW which would/could save time in this year's review. At this initial contact, I requested to have the previous SOW sent to me for review so I could approve the costs and schedule the work. Over the next several weeks each time they or I were in contact with each other I had to remind them to send over the previous year's SOW. The simple request to merely forward the prior year's SOW via email lasted several weeks and by the time they finally sent me the SOW, the work was performed by another vendor.

This customer was rude to office staff when phoning in as well as to myself when dealing with him. As a small company there are some people that we are not in a hurry to work for, and unfortunately this was one of them. It was a $7,500 job (fairly large for us) that we were more than happy to see go to our competition. We are highly respectful of you, our potential customers. After all it is you who we rely on! But we do ask to be treated in a reasonable manner return. Best regards, Andy Haak Owner, Insulwise Energy & Comfort Solutions

It went well - he found a leak in the furnace and told us we need to increase attic insulation. Also was good to know that we didn't need weather stripping because our windows are nicely sealed. Also gave us a couple of quotes for 2 other projects about joining the bathroom vents and putting insulation on top of the garage - luxury projects, of course but I just wanted estimates nonetheless. Ultimately, we didn't get the work done - probably due to the huge estimate provided. The consultant was professional and courteous and answered my questions. Not his fault but I didn't like having to pay for them to look at my house and then hand me a $3000 estimate. If you're going to do that, you need to discount the initial fee from a large estimate you provide. I will still use the company before this winter because they seem to be good, friendly professionals who know what they're doing.

Our energy audit process with regard to the Angie's List promotion we were running last fall was changed so that the $59 audit fee was subtracted from the job cost if the customer opted to have us perform work for them. Additionally, as of 1/1/15 our home energy audit's, including air infiltration and infrared analysis are now free of cost. So give us a call! The thing about insulating and sealing houses is that almost all the work is hidden. It's really hard to know whether the job has been done right, so it's important to hire someone you trust. As we learned through our energy audit, you can lose huge amounts of energy through holes that you don't know to look for if you don't know what you're doing. For example: you know what knee walls are, right? They're little walls that go from the floor to the roof of an attic, so they're not full-height walls. Under the floor, there are joists. And the joists have air between them, of course. So unless you seal all the gaps between the joists behind the kneewalls, you'll have attic air (read: COLD in the winter) circulating between your attic floor and the ceiling of the story below. This means someone has to go back there, cut rigid foam to fit in all the gaps between the joists, and seal it in with spray foam. It's a dirty, unpleasant job, but that's what you hire Insulwise for. And you can blow all the insulation into the walls you want and still have cold attic air circulating between your floors unless you fix this. We picked Insulwise at the recommendation of our energy auditor. Now, when I see a tight space I'm thinking of crawling into, my usual thought is "what if I get stuck?" But it seems like these guys take it as a matter of professional pride to get in there, do the job, and get out. We have an attic above an addition that wasn't insulated properly and we wanted them to go in there and fix it. We figured surely they'd have to cut an access hole somewhere, because the only access was through a gable vent. I'm a relatively thin guy, but it's less than a foot square, and there's no way I was fitting in there. But Jake managed to crawl in, seal all the leaks, and get out ? all without cutting a hole in our ceiling. Speaking of the addition, it has a bathtub in it. Don't ask me why, the previous owners put it in. But under the bathtub it was super cold (I know because it's a jet tub and you can remove the panels and stick a hand under there). This isn't good ? what if the pipes freeze? There was clearly a hole underneath, but there was no way of getting to it from the inside without dismantling the bathroom. And you can't spray foam underneath a jet tub, since it might overheat. What to do? Somehow, Jake managed to get in the crawlspace under the addition and fix it from below. We had all previously agreed that this was impossible because the access hole was way too small and you'd obviously have to excavate. And I know that the fix worked because suddenly it was warm under the tub. There were two small spots the team missed: part of one wall that was blocked by wood inside, and part of the space behind a closet. They came back and fixed both at no extra charge. I especially appreciated the fact that once they got started, they didn't worry too much about exactly what each item cost: really, they threw in the bathtub fix and the knee wall behind the closet for free. There was one other hitch in the project. We thought there was no knob and tube wiring left in the house; turns out we were wrong. In the first day on the job, the team found live knob and tube wiring in the attic. It's considered a fire hazard to insulate over it with cellulose, and since we were filling the walls and attics with cellulose, the job obviously couldn't proceed. The team told us about the problem and we rescheduled the rest of the work for after we could get an electrician in to fix it. This delayed the project about a month: about two weeks for us to get the electrical work done and another two weeks to get back on Insulwise's schedule. It sure would have been a lot easier for their schedule to just keep going, but they did the right thing by telling us about the problem so we could fix it. One more thing: cutting into knee walls is dirty work. I crawled in there once because I was curious and got totally covered in dust and grime. But Insulwise did a great job of protecting our white carpets and cleaning up afterward. Also, there was a toddler around, and the workers were great: they even worked around her nap schedule to do the work on her room. These guys are great and I'd recommend them to anyone who cares about actually getting the house to perform well.
Description of Work: This was an extensive project in an old home (1935) that had had almost no insulation in it and was very leaky, so there was a lot of work to do. 1. Dense-packed cellulose insulation in walls 2. Two-part spray foam on basement rim joist 3. Insulated and air-sealed all the knee walls. We have a finished attic with a ton of kneewalls. We even had a surprise kneewall attached to a closet on the second floor. 4. Sealed an air leak under the addition. 5. Blew insulation into all attics.

A three-member work team led by Jake arrived at my residence shortly after 9:00 a.m. on April 22, 2015. Owner Andy Haak arrived shortly afterwards. It was raining steadily that morning but the team staged every thing in one stall of my garage. Jake made an interior inspection of my residence (after removing his shoes) to insure he had the location of all 18 recessed ceiling lights and the location of all ceiling HVAC vents. Andy then explained the scope of work to be accomplished and asked if I had any questions. He emphasized that he would perform another blower door test at the conclusion of the project to document the reduction in air filtration achieved through the air sealing work performed. The work progressed smoothly. The work team worked from 9:15 to 3:15 on day one and from 9:00 to a little after 1:00 on day two. Including the time spent by Andy at my residence and his conducting and reviewing the results of a finish blower door test, I estimate that 34 man-hours were spent by Insulwise over the two days. The work team cleaned up and thoroughly vacuumed the garage and furnace and utility rooms of my residence at the conclusion of work on both days. They also vacuumed my driveway and landscape areas to collect cellulose insulation that escaped the truck at the end of day two. Andy asked me to join him in a final visual inspection of the work performed in my attic. I was impressed by the thoroughness of the job. I liked seeing the insulation level now at a uniform sixteen inches. I also appreciated the easy to close attic entrance hatch constructed. The concluding blower door test showed a 37% reduction in air infiltration achieved by Insulwise's actions. As a result, I expect to save approximately 40% annually on natural gas and electricity for heating and air conditioning. I may save even more as a result of the added attic insulation and I will probably see a significant reduction in ice build-up at my roof eaves next winter. As a final note, I reminded Andy that we both did our parts for our planet since the project was begun on Earth Day. I strongly recommend Andy, Xavier, and their team for their professionalism and the quality of their work. I would also encourage all who are considering improving the energy efficiency of their residences to lower their energy costs to get at two or three audits and estimates from experts. I shared with Andy that I solicited two other bids on the additional insulation work only, and Insulwise was very competitive with the lower bidder. Finally, I would caution that adding additional insulation without insuring your HVAC ductwork is tightly sealed and that air infiltration into the attic through your interior walls and recessed ceiling lights has been addressed is not a good investment since the warm air (or cool air in the summer) escapes through the insulation.
Description of Work: Xavier of Insulwise performed a free energy audit of my residence on April 8, 2015. The results indicated significant leakage of air from HVAC ductwork into my attic and significant air infiltration into the attic from my residence. Xavier sent a detailed report via email on the findings and a precise description of the recommended work to remediate on April 14. I had had a fee-paid energy audit performed on my residence in mid-February 2015. The findings of both audits were very similar; the scope of recommended remediation and the cost of correction were very different. Insulwise described in detail what corrections would be performed: foam seal the flexible attic HVAC ductwork concentrating on the branch connections and connections to rigid ceiling vents; caulk the interior furnace rigid ductwork; foam seal the interior wall top plates in the attic; install 18 TiteShell recessed can light covers in the attic and foam seal; and construct an insulated attic hatch around the ladder attic entrance in the garage. The cost for these services was 36% lower than the proposal of the competitor. Insulwise also proposed taking the "R" rating of my attic insulation from the current R24 to R49 by the addition of 1980 pounds (approximately 6 inches) of blown in cellulose insulation. I accepted Insulwise's total approach because it was less than $150 more than the much narrower scope of work proposed by the competitor for just some of the air sealing. Originally the work was scheduled for a long 10-hour day on May 18. However, Insulwise received a postponement of another job because of the need of a client to replace outdated attic electrical wiring. Owner Any Haak called me on April 20 and asked if I would like Insulwise to perform the work on my residence over a two-day period on April 22-23, 2015. I gladly accepted.

The men were on the job on time maybe even a little early & were very professional, we had our wires crossed on which job was being preformed. It was quickly remedy with a phone call. They worked long & hard making sure the job was done properly, cleaned up afterwards, were careful and did a great job! I would hire again infact hoping to have them back soon to insulate my garage as well. They went above and beyond what I've seen from workers in a long time. I would definitely recommend to all. Thank you guys!

The Drywall Part of it Could have been done better but it work's.I have a brick home so the exterior walls were insulated from the inside. It is a dirty job so pack away as much as you can before they start. When they were done with the walls They put a rough coat of patch on and your left with finishing it.This was not a problem for me and I knew about before time. There was a problem with a cold air return having insulation in it and Andy and Jake came out the next day and took care of the problem.I am happy with the fact that the result's are immediately felt. The draft's are gone and my house seems to hold a constent temperature with out the furnace needing to run constantly.I'll update my review during the summer to let you know how it performs.Overall I would recommend insulwise if you are getting blown in insulation. From the estimate to the end of the job you're treated with respect, and they are concerned with your satisfaction a great company to deal with.
Description of Work: Installed Drywall on garage ceiling air sealed and insulated the entire house.

This work was done fall of 2013. Performed energy analysis and negative pressure test. Suggested sealing and installing cellulose instead of fiberglass with roof fan as some installers do. After Andy's time spent here explaining the sealing and insulation process, we chose his company's bid. They arrived on time and worked a long day to complete the job. Very clean installation. We're glad to have the fan to help remove moisture from the house as recommended by Andy. It was worth it as was the insulation. Andy came back to our home after the installation to review a few questions we had about our roof vents. We're very pleased with the work. Our home is cooler in the summer and warmer in winter while saving on energy costs. Our ice dam problem is gone and snow stays on our roof as it should with proper insulation. We would use Insulwise again.

It weren't the cheapest but they did from the inside because another company was gonna drill through the motor on the outside. They were the most expensive but they did a great job. They were very professional, they were neat, they had to cover all my furniture - I have a 2-story duplex and my tenant lives in the first floor and she's real picky about everything but they covered everything and that really cut down the dust that can happen with the blowing.
Description of Work: They did my walls' insulation of the entire house - my walls, two storeys of my house, my attic.

They were also very professional and service oriented. However the insulation did not meet my expectations, and is not keeping my house warm.

Response from Insulwise Energy & Comfort Solutions
We analyzed the 2nd floor of this man's home because it was cold during the winter. With our air infiltration and infrared testing, we found numerous areas in the attic and walk-in closet that were poorly insulated and were allowing considerable amounts of warm air to escape from the home. We then contracted with the customer to fix these issues. Upon completion of the work he was very happy and even posted an all 'A's review of us on Angie's List. When it got cold in Jan, he then phoned me and said he was still having issues. I went to his home and spent 4 hours performing further analysis. With my infrared camera, I documented and showed him that the air being delivered to the rooms in question by his heat pump was barely 75 degrees. This indicated an unusual problem with his heat pump. However, I did send my team back free of charge to go over everything previously done to make sure that nothing was missed. The customer then emailed me a month later and said that if I didn't pay him $1,600 that he would post a nasty review on Angie's List. Knowing that I'd bent over backward to please this customer, and that we'd done our work scope correctly, I viewed this as extremely unfair. There was no way for us to determine the problem with his heat pump during our initial analysis, and we are not an HVAC company. Because I refused to pay him $1600 to take his review down, it now says "Stalemate." Please note that Insulwise has won the Angie's List Super Service Award from 2010-2014 and that we go out of our way to make our customers happy. Please see our dozens of other reviews that are predominantly glowing! Sincerely, Andrew Haak, Owner of Insulwise Energy & Comfort Solutions

It went well. Andy and his team showed up on the day they said they would and were able to get the insulation work done in our basement , garage and attic. They had everything finished up and cleaned up by early evening which worked out well. The team was very thorough it is obvious that Insulwise is all about doing the work correctly and professionally. They uncovered a few issue in our attic and took the time to correct a vent pipe that had broken , a light fixture was covered that was creating an air leak and could have represented a future fire hazard , they also sealed off a huge void in our attic with plywood. The owner even let us contact his insurance company so we could be added to his insurance policy. Real good experience. I have no doubt the work Insulwise did for us is going to mean a more comfortable home year round and lower utility bills. Feels good knowing we will use less energy going forward and that we have lowered are carbon footprint.
Description of Work: After talking to the owner a few times he sent out someone to do an energy audit on the house and the gentlemen that was sent out in early September was punctual , professional and knowledgeable. The energy audit revealed we had some opportunities to improve insulation and decrease our energy bills. I was really impressed with the owner and his energy auditor that we decided to let them do work in our basement / garage ceiling and the attic.

Aside from a scheduling mix up the work was very well done. They laid floor covers down so they didn't track dust and dirt from the attic into the house. The workers were very polite and professional. When they couldn't finish the work in one day they were able to schedule the rest of the work the same week. They clearly worked very hard and carefully. Overall I'm very pleased with the work performed and look forward to having a nice, snug house this winter.
Description of Work: We had them seal and insulate our attic. It involved sealing around all of the can lights and edges. They built covers for all 27 can lights in the attic after they sealed around them so that insulation could be safely laid over them. The hose connecting the bath fan to the roof was non-insulated so they replaced it with a well insulated hose. They constructed a cover to insulate the attic stairway and they blew in insulation throughout the whole attic. There are markers here and there in the attic to we can see how many inches of insulation was laid.

Andy was very informative and explained the problem that I was having with my cape cod house. He used a few different types of insulation all in which sealed my space. The crew worked very hard and did an amazing job! They took an interest in my needs and accommodated ...They were able to get it all finished in one day and they cleaned up very well. Andy was able to create a storage area for me that I was not expecting. I am so happy that I called this company! They did a super job and very professional!
