Groll Ornamental Iron Works

This is a family-run business. John Groll came to our home at the time of our appointment, listened to what we wanted, made a few sketches and submitted a proposal. His price was significantly less than that of another company in the Blawnox area, and for a more detailed railing. We were in no rush for completion, since it could not be installed until the weather warmed up so Groll first fabricated a portion of the railing, so that I could come to the shop and inspect it. John Groll was cordial, responsive and most helpful. The project was finished last week and Mr. Groll personally did the installation. The installation went smoothly and the site was left cleaned up. I would certainly hire Groll Ornamental again, and I have recommended them to friends and associates. The railing is beautiful and well-constructed. It is exactly what we wanted.

After contacting Mr. Groll in September 2010, he came to an appointment at my house to review constructing 3 sets of wrought iron railings. A couple of weeks later, he provided an estimate/proposal via email. Following that, I wanted to proceed with the project before snow and ice season, and sent him numerous emails, left more than a dozen measages to both his cell phone and business phone. This went on for 4 months. He never answered. One day in December 2010, I drove to his shop on Becks Run. He was not there but I talked to his son and his iron worker. After explaining his father's irresponsible behavior, the son swore that his father will get back to me by the end of the week. He never did. Mr. Groll is very unreliable and I would stay away from his business.

He installed railing and never came back to finish painting it. In 2011, the railing split and came apart in many places due to improper sealing. John Groll came to see railing and agreed. He also agreed to pay the difference from the Insurance company and the remainder of the concrete job. He is now refusing to do anything at all. He is stating that all he will do is give us partial refund on railing. This leaves us with ruined concrete and railing which he is responsible for.

I don't know if the fence is great or not, because it is 2 months behind schedule being installed. Mr. John Groll met with us, came to survey the site, determined the fence components and took our $6k deposit. He said it could be installed by the end of July. July 31 came and, even after multiple attempts at contacting him, we still had not heard from him about the status. Finally, a visit to his shop got him to tell us that he was behind on fabrication. Truth was, he hadn't even ordered the components yet. Then, even with weekly check-ins, he missed his second deadline of Sep 7th to start installation. He never calls back, his answering machine is always full and he really doesn't care if he meets your schedule or not. Awful.

mr. groll said the gate would have a rod that would slide into a hole in the driveway to keep the gate from swinging when opened. the gate has no such feature and in windy weather swings shut. this is problematic when i'm in the car. also, mr. groll miscalculated the length of a piece of the wrought iron that connected the gate to the adjoining fence. he said he would fix it but never has.

They were great. They are a small family owned business. I met with the father but his son works there as well. I met them at the shop and chose something other than what I had planned just by looking at the sample. I got aluminum instead of iron. It was supposed to be a six to eight week order and they finished it in two weeks. It was fantastic.

Called twice never returned call for estimate.

He was courteous and within reason. I had quite a few estimates, and he wasn't the cheapest or most expensive, but I liked his presentation.

I CALLED 2-3 TIMES AND THEY NEVER CALLED ME BACK.

I CALLED GROLL. UNFORTUNATELY MY JOB WAS TOO SMALL FOR THEM (ABOUT TEN FEET OF PLAIN RAILING). HOWEVER, THE GENTLEMAN I SPOKE WITH WAS VERY, VERY HELPFUL AND GAVE ME THE NAME OF TWO COMPANIES ABOUT WHICH HE'D HEARD GOOD THINGS (MODERN METALS IS THE ONE I ENDED UP USING - 412-765-1225).

HE WAS WONDERFUL!!!! HE TOOK THE TIME THE TIME TO ANSWER MY QUESTION. HE IS VERY PATIENT AND DETAILED. REASONABLE.

GROLL WAS RESPONSIVE TO OUR DESIGN NEEDS. THEY WORKED WITH MANY OPINIONS FROM PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS, AND GAVE US WHAT WE WANTED, WHEN WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT WAS.
