I would recommend that you do not hire Tom Dean. He is slow, messy, unprofessional, and only works till about 3pm, even though he starts around 9am. The project with Tom Dean seemed to start ok. He started on Tuesday, June 25th. Began by putting up the blueboard drywall. However, after two days, (end of day Wednesday, June 26th), he still hadn't finished hanging and taping the blueboard drywall. I kept wondering when he'd actually start plastering the walls. But I figured he was the expert, so he should be able to finish. By end of day Thursday, he had finally finished hanging the blueboard, but said he'd be back on Friday to finish everything. By end of day Thursday, he also had patched the three areas in the ceiling with plaster, however, I had to sand them smooth later. So, here I am, thinking he would start and finish the wall plastering on Friday. I come home around 1pm, and he's waiting with my wife, and asking for payment, since he said he's finished. When I looked at the basement walls, not a single ounce of plaster on the walls. I almost fell over, I was so shocked. All he did was tape the drywall seems, and mud it. And he was asking for $1500, $300 more than the original quote of $1200. For a mediocre drywall finish job, that would need extra detail work if you just wanted to paint it. I asked him why he didn't plaster my drywall. He said that I never asked him to do that. I responded by saying why would I hire a plasterer to only drywall my basement, and not have him plaster? After some back and forth, he said he would come back on Friday, July 6th, and plaster my walls. After we came to an agreement, I paid him $1000 for hanging the drywall, and agreed to pay another $600 upon completion of his plaster work. He never showed up on Friday, July 6th to do the plastering. So I called him that day, and when he realized it was me, he quickly said he couldn't talk, but would call me back. He finally called me back during the week of July 8th, and said sorry, but he couldn't come and plaster my walls. He is extremely slow. It shouldn't take 3 1/2 days to simply hang and finish drywall seams for a 600 sq ft basement. My wife and I even helped cut some of the drywall for him. And it still took him 3 1/2 days. He is messy. He left plaster on several areas over my driveway, which has hardened. I'll have to chip them off. He left some plaster smudges on my hallway walls, which I had to scrape off before they were repainted. He only works about 6 hours a day. And then tells you he needs to come back a 4th day, and wants to charge you extra for it. He does not listen to what is asked of him. I asked him to plaster my basement walls. He did not do that. Please do not hire this man. He may have been a good plasterer in his prime, but his age has left him a sloppy worker, who does not care about his work.
Description of Work: We asked Tom Dean to plaster veneer our entire basement. He also agreed to hang the blueboard (drywall which is designed for plaster veneer). We also asked him to blueboard (drywall) and plaster three sections in the basement ceiling where lights were taken out.

I don't even know where to begin. Do not hire this man! I wish I had read the other Angie's List reviews before calling him. He left our house a disaster and it took two weeks to clean up all of the plaster dust and chunks on the walls. He worked 5 hour days and then told us he needed another three-hundred dollars to stay one more day to finish! He skipped so many areas in the house that we asked to be repaired- should have been simple for a man touting he had over thirty years in the business. He told us "why bother to fix the cracks when no one can see them". He got angry on the phone when asked to wait for payment until BOTH my husband and I had a chance to do a walk through. We found hand prints all over our new windows. He left areas unfinished, such as inside closets. My next door neighbor commented that he had the dirtiest truck he had ever seen, with plaster caked all over the inside. This man is very unprofessional.
Description of Work: Plastering on walls that had been remodeled, fixing plaster cracks throughout house (walls and ceilings), small jokes in walls.

Was told that the plastering/texterizing would dry to a chalky white finish. It never did.... it remained a grey color in both spots. My husband had to go in his time off to get paint and paint over the spots. Also, the repaired portion, is not even. It bulges out and is noticeable.

Tom was quick in responding to my request for a quote and competitively priced. He arrived on time, was courteous and let our kitchen in the same shape he found it, only with perfect walls and a beautiful ceiling.
Description of Work: Tom repaired drywall and plaster during my kitchen renovation. We removed a wall, bulkheads, and pantry walls. Tom repaired the drywall, and put a new skim coat of plaster on all of the walls and ceiling. He worked quickly, cleanly, arrived on time, and was very reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

Dean's plastering replaced the ceiling in my kitchen and because we had also removed a wall, it was necessary to re-plaster the adjoining dining room. Tom Dean (the owner) did an absolutely amazing job blending the ceiling between the kitchen and dining room, especially where the wall had been removed. We have received numerous complements from our friends and family, with everyone exclaiming "how beautiful the ceilings in the two rooms look" We were very, very pleased with Tom's professionalism, and best of all was the very reasonable price. Tom Dean is a true master craftsman and I would highly recommend him for any plastering job.

I hired Mr Dean to drywall 2 walls and a ceiling in my spare bedroom and a small area in my kitchen where drywall had been damaged. He quoted me a price of 850.00 for his work .I felt that price was too high for the job, but I let it go because he said he was a 30 year seasoned plasterer. He refused to do a contract with me stating very sternly that he does NOT DO CONTRACTS! He assured me that every seam would be taped and 3 coats of mud used on the dry wall. However, THAT WAS NOT WHAT HE DID!! .When I checked out the room after he was done I couldn't believe how sloppy it looked. 8 out of the 9 seams had no tape, instead there was a thick bead of lumpy caulking used with no mud over it .Every seam was shiney , it couldn't be sanded or smoothed out because it was this thick rubber caulking. On the one and only taped seam there wasn't even enough mud to cover the tape .I could've easily lifted the tape from the wall, that's how little he mudded it. It looked so unfinished, not work that one would expect from a "professional". He was so sloppy when he texturized the ceiling that he ended up getting it all over the smooth walls. Behind the radiator, there was a section that needed dry walled. He never moved the radiator , instead just put up a poorly measured piece of dry wall which left a 4 inch gaping hole along the length of the radiator between where the drywall came down and the plaster came up.The hole was so obvious that as soon as you entered the room you could see it. He wet sanded the drywall surfaces and left many areas appearing rough, with large gouge lines and uneven surfaces. It took me 4 hours to re sand that room to get it to a smooth surface. Also he was to repair a small area in my kitchen where drywall had been damaged when my sink was removed. He replaced the small section of drywall and again did not tape the seams but instead used a thick clumpy bead of caulking.the mud was sloppily applied and at the base of the wall it was in big clump as well. He NEVER sanded anything and left it looking an absolute mess! I couldnt even have the baseboard installed because the mud was so thick and lumpy. When I called him to tell him he needed to come back and fix everything, he did only after he realized that I had put a hold on his check. He saw all the different areas and agreed that it wasn't done correctly but only agreed to smooth out some of the rougher areas on the wall where he got the textured ceiling mud all over the place. Then when I showed him the area in the kitchen where he slopped on all this drywall mud over a SHINEY THICK RUBBER caulked seam ,he said "I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD MATTER BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T HAVE NOTICED IT ANYWAYS'" I later had a sink installed and that area that Mr Dean did had to completely redone!! As he was leaving he said the next job he does like this it will cost $1,000 because he under bid this job! Other plasterers that I had consulted to look at this room were amazed at how sloppy and careless his work was .

He called a couple of days before he was scheduled to perform the work and asked if he could come one day later. He arrived at 8:15 am and spread out a tarp that was filled with what seemed like old pieces of plaster from his last job. He cut out the old drywall tape and spread new plaster quickly and haphazardly, getting plaster on our carpet and wood trim. I had to run out to the store briefly and when I returned about noon, he was gone. I ask my wife if he was out to lunch and she said he was finished. We inspected his work and found holes where he didn't plaster in the corners. The plaster was very rough, with little attempt to feather it into the existing textured ceiling, and only about 2/3 of the tape was repaired in the bedroom, leaving the rest pealing away from the ceiling. He made no attempt to clean up the pieces of plaster and debris that missed his tarp . I called and left a message that he needed to return and finnish the job, but, of course, he never returned or called.
Description of Work: We had some drywall tape that was separating at the point where the wall meets the ceiling in the living room, hallway and master bedroom of our 20 year old house. We found Dean's Plastering in our local Pennysaver under Plastering Contractors. Tom Dean seemed experienced (30 years or more, at least that's what he claimed) and sounded as if he knew what needed to be done.
