D & G Chimney Sweeps

Very professional respectful and knowledgeable. We expected the chimney to need extensive repair work. Dan did an excellent job of explaining what needed to be done and why it needed to be done. They did a triple check on the chimney when the estimate was done and also when the job was preformed. No surprises. They arrived on time and called before arriving. They correctly installed a cap that was put in by another contractor several weeks prior of whom we could not get to return our calls. We had water coming in they fit us in on a Sunday and worked thru the 1st half of the Steelers game. I would highly recommend this company and we plan on having them back to do our yearly maintenance

It did not go well. The response time was awful. Instead of assisting me with the installation of the cap, he preferred to give me instructions on the phone.

He did a good job. He came a little late, but he called to let us know. He gave us the scoop on what was going on with each chimney.

Arrived on time and performed a thorough job.

I called them and the guy came out within a day or two. He did the work, gave some advice, and we had a quick transaction.

The service went fine overall. The price was reasonable. They were right on time.

Disappointing. The owner of D&G returned my call and we set up an appointment and he never showed for the appointment nor did he call to let me know that he was not coming. We were very disappointed considering his high ratings. We called him because of his advertisement/coupon in the Angie's magazine.

They were responsive and came out right away to do an estimate. They gave me options that ranged from just cleaning the chimney for $600 to doing preventative measures to bring the chimney up to code. The metal liner they placed on the chimney prevents ice and rain from coming in and creating leaks, carbon monoxide and how often you have to have it cleaned.

I found D and G in Angies List, and it got very good reports. Dave returned my call promptly, and was able to schedule an appointment right away. The owner and crew are professional, and polite and worked diligently. I like the fact that the health and safety of the men was considered...they all wore face masks to protect their air passages. I would definitely hire this company again, and recommend them highly.

We had used D&G Chimney sweep summer of 2008 without difficulty so we called again this year for the annual chimney cleaning. This year was a very different experience. We recieved a call from Don after he cleaned the chimney (we now live out of state and have our Pittsburgh home rented) stating that there had been a chimney fire at some point and that some terra cotta lining tiles had been cracked. He said that we would need to reline the chimney with a stainless liner. He explained that this was something that insurance should cover and that he would meet the insurance inspector to review the needed work. He also told me he would send me a detailed report the following week so that I would have it for my records and for the insurance company. The report and estimate came 3 weeks after the chimney was cleaned. Don did not show up as scheduled for the meeting with the insurance inspector and his voicemail box was full so that we could not even leave a message to see if he was on his way. He also told me at one point that he had never cleaned my chimney before and when I assured him he had, he still said no. I had to tell him I had the old bill in my hand and the date on it before he would believe me. Also, when he came to clean the chimney, he brought 3 other men who seemed to be learning the trade. I realize that you must train new employees but I don't feel it is appropriate to bring 3 other people into someone's home. One new employee would have been fine but not 3. Finally, when the estimate did come for the work, it was $6,800. We had the work done for $1,875 from another company. The vast difference would have been enough to make me question the work of the company with the smaller estimate but that company came highly recommended from a source we trusted so we had them do the work and were extremely satisfied. I am not sure what happened to change this company in the year between our first and second contact. However, we would not want to use them again. Our review of a fair price and the quality of work reflects the chimney sweep, not the relining estimate.

The work was good. They came when they said they would. The price was actually less than what they thought it would be, and that was a plus. I would use them in the future, if necessary.

They didn't even look at the work I wanted done and they wanted too much. They wanted to charge me $450. I ended up going with another company. He just quoted a price before he knew what was wrong. A couple days later, he called me back at my work and I didn't even leave my work number. He was even willing to come that day to do the work, however.

We were very pleased with them. They were very professional and did the job as promptly as possible. They did a very thorough cleaning and we have not had a problem since. We will use them in the future.

Very well. D&G is professional and reasonable and their pricing is competitive.

Don was the only company of 5 that I attempted to reach who even returned my phone call. He was able to come out within 3 days. He called ahead to say they were running behind and would be late, which was no problem. He and his helpers were absolutely professional, polite and did a terrific job. There was no mess left behind a all. Don took the time to thoroughly explain what he found in terms of needed repairs (all of which he said could wait until next spring), and also took his time showing me the details of the fireplace, how and where everything was vented, and how to safely use the fireplace (sounds silly perhaps, but I'm a newbie at this). He took pictures of what he found on the roof and was able to show me the repairs he recommended having next year and why. I haven't had old-fashioned customer service like this from a contractor in a long time. I would most definitely recommend D & G to anyone.

Don was very polite and was able to schedule us for an estimate within a few days of calling him. We agreed on 9:00 that Saturday morning. It turned out he was about 45 minutes late and we didn't get a phone call letting us know he was running late. Once at our home, Don was very thorough in describing what he would need to do and had a unique way of using analogies to help us understand the work involved. We had one more person scheduled to give us an estimate after Don, and the other gentleman would do the same work for $400 cheaper. We ended up going with the other gentleman.

Of the three sources I checked, he was the only one who answered the phone. He came on time and was professional in his work. I rate him a "B" in quality and price because I am not that experienced in having this service done. But I can say that he told me the price upfront on the phone and there were no surprises. He was very neat and cleaned up afterwards. He left me a detailed description of his work, including a drawing of the inner workings of my chimney. It's a little more complicated than I imagined.

I ultimately went in a different direction with this project but would call Don again for repairs and cleaning.

The inspector arrived on time and was very friendly. He inspected our chimney and told us it wasn't lined, and so it wasn't safe to use as is. He gave us our options, saying that we could have it lined (several thousand dollars) or suggested installing gas logs. Overall, we were very happy with their services.

Left a message and got a return call within a day. Scheduled to come out for an inspection within the week. Arrived promptly and did an inspection. Wasn't the greatest at explaining things so I could understand them, but that didn't make me doubt that he knew what he was doing. Gave me an estimate and said he would call soon to schedule the work. Called the next day and scheduled for later in the week. Unfortunately he was scheduled for 9am and he called around 9:30am and said he'd be late, around 10 or 10:30. He didn't arrive by 11am so I called him and left a message. He called back around 11:30 and said he was on his way, but didn't arrive until 1pm! This would be okay, except I specifically scheduled him first thing in the morning so he'd definitely be done before my toddler's nap, because chimney cleaning is loud. Luckily it acted as white noise and my toddler slept, but I was annoyed at having to wait around with little notice. Despite that Don and his helper were nice guys, thorough, clean, and courteous. I would hire them again.

Work not performed. I very much liked Don and was impressed with his knowledge of chimneys and wanted him to do the work...but felt the price was far too high for the small job I need done.

I have some stains on the exterior of my chimney and have had poor success getting a diagnosis of the problem from other chimney sweeps. Don came to my home on a Sunday morning to accommodate my busy schedule. He spent a full two hours in my home cleaning and inspecting the inside and outside of my chimney. He was very thorough and very friendly. He gave me an itemized estimate for cleaning the chimney stains, installing a cap and repairing the crown. He explained which repairs were necessary and what was highly recommended. I was extremely satisfied with the service.

On New Years eve I had a new hot water heater installed and it did not vent out the chimney properly. I called D and G Chimney Sweeps and with in two hours, Don arrived and checked the chimney. He determined the chimney was fine structurally, but was partially blocked by a lot of debris. He cleaned out all of the debris, and chiseled out mortar that had fallen down the flue. Once he put the hot water heater back in place, it vented properly.

D & G CHIMNEY SWEEPS told me that they could come that very day to see what the job would entail. I was very pleased since I had the day off (it was the day before Thanksgiving). I was pleasantly surprised when they came when they told me they would come. Don told me that since they were there they could take the time right there and then to install it for me. It took them about 1 1/2-2 hours to do the job. After Don had installed it he told me that he had to work with the chimney cap that we had ordered. I thought the cap was perfectly fitted for the chimney (since the contractor gave us the measurements in order to buy the cap), but Don explained that the chimney cap measurement was incorrect and he had to readjust it in order to fit. He installed it even with the mismeasurement on our part, saving us the cost of having to order yet another chimney cap! He and his helper were very pleasant and professional. I would use them again and recommend them to everyone.

The fireplace was only used a handful of times during the 50 years the previous owner lived in the home. When I bought the house I knew it needed some work. Don inspected the fireplace and reiterated the work I already knew it needed. He also offered some alternative ideas on cost adjustment. Don presented a written estimate, which no other unexpected costs were incurred. He and his crew were very polite, trustworthy, and honest. During part of this project, he worked inside and outside of my home while I was away on a business trip. Each day he left the work site as clean as he found it. He was also very quick to respond to any questions or problems. Don seems to be the last of a good-hearted, hard working breed. I highly recommend him.
