Jon came to our house, arrived on time, listened to what we wanted completed, and fixed everything that we asked him to do. The only regret I have is that we could not get our shower fan fixed, but this was the lowest priority fix that we had. Unfortunately, the way our house is wired we could not get this fixed. Re-wiring would turn into a very expensive ordeal.
Description of Work: Our attic air circulation fan was connected to power by an extension cord. This is a fire risk, so we had CW come in and directly wire the fan. They also disconnected a lighting wire run out past our retaining wall. Lastly, we wanted our master bathroom shower fan to be GFCI protected. They attempted to run a GFCI breaker, but due to having too much load on this breaker he could not get this to work for us.

My house was directly hit by lightning at around 3 am this morning. I'm writing this same day review because CW Electrical exceeded my expectations today. The lightning caused about half of my breaker box to trip. I also experienced roof damage and water damage. I called CW based on Angie's list reviews and Dave came to my home. He checked out my breaker box, replaced a GFI outlet that was damaged by the lightning and made me aware that my washer's internal electronics were damaged by the lightning. He advised me to check the other electronic/electrical devices and appliance in my house as there could be more damage. That was very good advice as I indeed found additional loss. I was not charged a trip fee, etc. There was no attempt to "upsell", etc. I appreciate the quick response, politeness, respect for my home, and help. Thanks again Dave and I will be calling again when I need electrical work done.
Description of Work: CW inspected my breaker box and some outlets for damage.

I called to have 3 outlets & maybe a co-axle installed. Called on Friday May 27th & said I would receive a phone call on Tues. which I never did. I called on Wed. & talked to either Dan or Dave & they acted like they didn't know who I was. I didn't ask to be squeezed in but since I got them off of Angies List I felt they would be fair with me & to do the work. I couldn't see them coming down to give me an est. for the 3 outlets & then coming back to do the work. They put be in on Thurs. June 2nd. Jon was the technician. He did the work in under an hour. Charged me $244.98 which I thought was very high plus I gave him a $20.00 coupon which should of made my bill $224.98 & he charged me $254.98. Also, I saw on his paper it said try to sell the co-axle & make 15% for your self. I called immediately & told whoever answered the phone about the wrong charge & he said someone would call me before days end. Of course, no one called me & they owe $$30.00. I will never hire this co. again. I don't feel that they are honest nor do they get back to you. I hope that they are honest enough & have the integrity to send me my $30.00 that they overcharged me for.

I am sorry this customer had a bad experience with our company. As we do with every customer who is in need of service work we explained our charges up front on the initial phone call. We charge $169.99 for the first hour. This includes any troubleshooting, light repairs, stock materials and our trip fee ($49.00). This is all done up front over the phone. The technician, Jon, is very good at troubleshooting. This is what needed done in the kitchen of her home. Jon performed this task and was asked to fix an outlet box in the living once he identified and repaired her main issue. He also fixed this outlet box. Total time on job was approx. 1hr 20 min. He charged her an additional $75.00 for the outlet repair. On her invoice he made a mathematical error. total charges $244.99, she had a $20.00 Angies list coupon. He ended up finalizing the invoice at $254.98. Its an obvious error, when we brought it to his attention, he also agreed. He was not sure how or why he came up with that amount. This customer was immediately sent a reimbursement check for $30.00. We were not trying to deceive her in any way, just simply an easily identified computation error.

CW Electrical Services were very professional and responsive. They showed up on time and worked all day and cleaned up when they were finished. They followed up with me to make sure the electrical inspector contacted me to inspect the panel and service. I had many questions and the 2 workers were helpful in answering them all. After they left, I noticed what appeared to be a defect on part of the metal of the new panel, and they called me back and had that piece corrected/replaced within several days. I also had recently (6 months prior) had all new insulation blown in to my attic, some of which was disturbed when the guys were up there working. Dave from CW was quick to say they would make it right. He stopped by to talk to the insulation installer about what needed to be fixed and how to avoid any issues with blown in insulation in the future. CW handled the payment for the insulation repair directly. I am very happy with their responsiveness and recommended them to my neighbors.

They did an excellent job. We purchased a coupon through Angie's list to upgrade our electrical panel. Contact was very easy. A professional came out to evaluate the current panel and gave us an estimate for additional work we were considering. They arrived as scheduled and performed the service. We have kept their estimate for additional work and will likely use their services in the future.

Overall good job... but lacked attention to detail. Some switches not re-installed flush to surrounding wall... and lighted rocker switches not installed in a uniform manner (some with night light at top, others had it positioned on the bottom). Otherwise, crew was prompt and courteous.

Thank you for your feedback. It is very important to us to receive this kind of feedback as it helps us improve. I have spoken to this tech about attention to the details and have had a meeting with all techs in an effort to reiterate the importance of the small things. They get it and understand that even days which they are in a rush, we cannot sacrifice our quality and workmanship. We can do better... We value your business and would like to offer a free service call to you which will never expire.

I feel like this was a bait and switch. They sent out someone who could not do the work for me.
Description of Work: They talked me into coming to do the work and not get an estimate. 1 hour worth of time to come and do the work for me. They did show up and the person came out he told me he could not do most of the work. He spent 15 minutes to change a light sensor. I wanted a ceiling fan mounted correctly but he said he could not do that as well as several other projects. The ceiling fan was mounted correctly by another person within a half hour.

We provide free estimates. When a customer calls and has a very small project it is not worth 2 trips. So instead of sending an estimator, we told her we would send a tech, that way if she wanted the work done it could be performed right then. Our service fee was discussed with her over the phone but only if she wanted the work done. She wanted to replace a dusk to dawn sensor, a fan that wobbled and she believed the power company was inflating her monthly bill and asked if we could look into what could cause high utility bills. When the tech got to her home she showed him the ceiling fan. She turned it on and it was not wobbling. They waited a few minutes and same thing, no wobble. She said it only does it sometimes. The tech explained if it was not happening now how could he fix it, there was nothing wrong with it. She agreed and took him outside to show him the meter bank. She believed she was being over charged by the utility and thought maybe a tenant was illegally stealing power. The tech verified this was not the case (she made him turn off the main breaker to prove this). after 20-30 minutes of the run around the tech figured out she switched her bill last year to first energy instead of duqusene light. Long story short, first energy uses an adjustable rate and increases after first year. Finally on to the sensor she wanted replaced. Our service call fee is a minimum of $169.00. She asked how much to change the sensor...$169.00. She was told she did not have to do the sensor, he could write up the estimate and her visit to that point would be free. She declined and agreed to have the sensor put in. Really dont know how this could be considered "bait and switch" at all. She did not have to do the work, she choose to have it done. It did only take about 15min to install the sensor but the tech was there in total well over one and a half hours. I feel we were very clear from the begining with this customer and upfront with our charges and estimate policies.

The electrician showed up as scheduled, did a thorough examination of the house, and told me that I would have an estimate sent to my email within 48 hours. Time passed (greater than 48 hrs), and I contacted the company again, via Angie's List requesting that they send me the estimate. I also resent all of the pertinent personal information to make sure that they could send it to the correct email address. Have YET to hear from them! No explanation, nothing -- terrible customer service in my opinion!

This issue has since been resolved. We were behind in getting our estimates to a few customers. Our estimator had to take a few days off to deal with a personal health issue. We are all caught up and this customer has received her free estimate with a generous discount and has declined to proceed with the paid work. We do apologize for any inconvenience.

Exemplary work. When CW came out to take a look at the job they were on time and courteous. We talked through a few scenarios and decided on the 200 amp service instead of the 150 amp service and the arrived as promised. They scheduled my job quickly and their team was on site as scheduled. They finish the work in about five hours and it looks fantastic. They even had to move the electrical panel from where the old panel was and the junction boxes that they placed and subsequent wiring look wonderful. As new projects come up from my house they will be the only people I call.

There is one socket that required too much effort to use at first, but seems okay now. The "D" rating is based in the fact that we were charged a $50 fee in addition to any charges directly related to the work performed; said fee was NOT mentioned by this provider within the submitted text to Angie's List. My call to Angie's List netted a helpful rep who, like me, saw no reference to such a fee (or whatever it is termed). I did not appreciate at all this surprise charge, especially given the cost of the actual services.

I am very pleased with CW Electric?s service for my knob and tube rewire project. The office contact, Dan was excellent at returning phone calls and scheduling. The job estimate was 5-8 business days and it was done in 3.5 business days! Needless to say, they work very efficiently. Shawn walked me through everything that was being worked on each day. He didn?t assume anything and asked me my preferences when he ran into any situations. I will highly recommend the CW Electric team! I will be using them again.

It went ok. The fellows were all really, really nice. The products they provided and installed were a good value for the money. There were a couple of reschedulings needed due to the guys bringing the wrong lights, which was a little inconvenient. However, they didn't charge me any mileage fee even though they came from Pittsburgh to Washington. The lights are working well and are exactly what we wanted. They felt bad about the reschedulings and offered a discounted rate for future work. I would use them again.

It went great. Jon was able to add the two circuits for the kitchen without too much trouble, and the new light fixture looks good. The electrician was punctual, arriving even slight earlier. He quickly replaced the programmable switch and then started to navigate the issue of our backyard flood light. After spending some time running around the house and turning on different switches and even checking the electrical panel, he declared there wasn't any power going to that light, probably due to previous wiring work in the house. My husband and I decided not to pursue any further on this issue in this scenario. The overall process was smooth, but I have problem with their bill. They have this TFSC fee listed on the invoice which I wasn't notified when placing the service call. The TFSC fee is $49.99. So on top of the service call fee $169.99, we paid the programmable switch for $39.97 and this TFSC for $49.99. Total is $239.95 (minus angie's list member $20 discount). I called the company afterwards about this hidden fee. The man who answered the call explained it was a built-in charge for every service for their gasoline and insurance expense...he did apologize for not mentioned the TFSC fee when I placed the service call. So just to be aware this company does have a big hidden fee for their service.
Description of Work: He replaced a new programmable switch for the entrance light, and then diagnosed the power supply issue for a mal-functioned flood light in our back yard and then decided there was no power run into the light. We decided not to pursue further for this scenario.

I am sorry to hear this customer was not pleased with our pricing, but am glad she appreciated the service. We do try our best from the office to inform each customer of the complete cost before we schedule, it would not make sense for us to dedicate our time for a job for which we would be unsure if the customer would (1) have the work done (2) be willing to pay after completion. We do not hide any fees and do our best to be upfront. ALWAYS! As a service company, it is increasingly difficult to combine all of the needs of various customers (1) high level customer service (2) quality work/highly experienced electricians (3) price (value). Our pricing matches our company goals to serve. Customers can call and schedule, review jobs estimated, ask questions etc. at any time. We are always here during business hours. We do not out source our phone calls to a 3rd party answering service. We hire the best. period. Our techs are experienced, well versed in their trade, friendly and efficient. Our techs are employees. we do not hire subs. We cover each with workers compensation, vacation pay, medical, 401K and personal days. This is what it takes to attract the right employee. In return, the customer receives a great service and experience from each. Our pricing matches these qualities. If we could provide a cheaper service, we would have to neglect one of the 2 points above. As a company we believe that each customer deserves the best and therefore our pricing reflects. We do not have any hidden fees and we address all pricing concerns with respect to the customer. As a follow up to this customer, Please do not hesitate to use us in the future. We will waive our trip fee and provide a 15% discount on all work needed on your next visit. I would appreciate another opportunity for your business but understand if you choose another provider. Their are a lot of very good electrical companies in the area and im sure they all charge a trip fee.

First good sign -- "Dan" answered the telephone personally when I called. I had already called three other providers and was met with a voice-mail message for each. I love that I could talk to someone quickly. Dan listened to my description of the problem, and recommended that we wait for the "Project Manager" Chris to come the following day, rather than deal initially with a technician later the same day. I took his advice and made the appointment. My husband stayed home from work, and we were hoping that Chris would come earlier than he did, but we are happy he was able to come within less than 24 hrs. We had the Utility Company come out twice to check the lines into our house, and they assured us that there were no problems there, and it must be inside, hence our seeking out an electrician. Chris quickly surmised that the lines into the house were, in fact, faulty. In fact they were SMOKING when he visited! He cut off the power and called the Utility Company, who (amazingly) showed up within about 15 minutes to solve the problem. Kudos to Dan and Chris.

My house is ~100 years old, 1800 sq feet, 3 stories, a good amount of jerry-rigged knob and tube wiring from previous owner. I first learned that I needed significant electrical work when outlets started go fritz and an electrician that I called to repair refused to touch anything. My house is inconvenient construction (understatement) for significant electrical work as my outside walls do not have any space in them--my inside plaster is right up against the exterior bricks. I contacted 3 different companies to get estimates. Each sent a person who spent 1+ hour walking thru the house to assess the situation. First company gave only a 2-page estimate (very few details) that was laughably sky-high. Second company, the electrician was very knowledgeable but he admitted that re-wiring my house was an awful job and I'd have to get rid of alot of stuff that would be in his way while working. He wasn't sure he wanted the job--I was encouraging him to send me an estimate anyway. In the end, he never sent me an estimate. CW Electric gave me a 6-page, totally detailed and itemized estimate (showing the $ amount for every outlet, every switch, etc.) They were actually interested in doing the job. From my initial phone call (Dan answered right away) to Dave coming within a few days to check out my house (with good ideas for some difficult workarounds) to Rock and Mike starting ~10 days later and coming every day for 3.5 weeks to actually do the work, CW made this really exhausting, huge job as pleasant as possible. I feared it would be traumatic for me, but thank goodness, it wasn't. Rock and Mike came promptly every morning before I went to work and we would discuss anything necessary--Rock would ask me about my preference for different things, and kept me updated wrt which pre-existing light fixtures had sub-standard wiring so I'd need to either replace or rewire. These guys are saints--they never complained or gave any indication that my, um, clutter was a nuisance to them. I did my best to box and bag stuff up to give them less stuff to trip over, but they still had to move furniture at times. They said "we don't mind heavy, we just don't want to break any of your stuff." My house gave Rock and Mike many opportunities to be creative/problem-solve. My house was chock full of mysterious wiring (some still live) and an outdated wired security system (left over from previous owner). Rock and Mike had to access some 2nd floor wiring through the 3rd floor boards (they temporarily removed and then replaced some floorboards, no sweat). When I had company (including small children) coming one weekend (before job completed), Rock and Mike closed up everything to make everything safe. They had to move my Verizon FIOS box over several feet to fit the new larger panel in my basement. In some places they had to use wire mold to run the new wiring since no way to fish the wires through exterior walls, but they did this in as unobtrusive a way as possible, along the baseboards. Also, I had been concerned about there potentially being unseen/signficant problems that would only be discovered once work started, so before I signed on with CW, I asked if they would modify the estimate to include a statement that any overruns beyond 5% of the total would be their responsibility. They agreed right away, modified the proposal and emailed it back the same day. Note that they did not take the least advantage of this 5%--the final cost was the original amt bid, plus $155 for an exterior motion-sensor spotlight that was added later. I am extremely, totally pleased with the work that CW did. I highly recommend them as a very reputable company, super pleasant to work with, fair price.
Description of Work: CW gave my house a whole-house rewire--everything is new, all wiring everywhere in the house and outside: all wiring to/from new panel to outlets, fixtures, and switches, all new outlets and fixtures, new 200A panel, new meter base, hub and connector (outside house), copper ground from panel to water meter, copper ground from panel to grounding rods outside/in the earth... You name it,they replaced it. They also added several new outlets to meet City of Pgh code, as well as 2 dimmer switches and outside motion-detector floodlight. Also includes permit to City of Pgh for inspection. The cost did not include replastering the holes for fishing the wires (this clearly stated up front in advance), and I purchased any needed new light fixtures separately.

The experience was great. The electrician Chris was top notch. Knew exactly what he was doing and tracked down the problem which was not an easy task in my very old house. Was very thorough and efficient. Was skeptical at price quoted for service call (really was not sure what the going rate is nowadays), but they took the Angie's coupon, and it was a very good price for the work performed. I would definitely recommend them. Very satisfied.
Description of Work: Tested breakers and found the line that had a problem leading to bedrooms with no power. Fixed the problem.

ceiling fans, electrician

Not really thrilled with my service from them. I hired CW to install two ceiling fans for me, because my ceiling is too high for me to comfortably do it on my own. The electrician who came out was a nice and polite person, but in the end, I am going to have to hire somebody else to finish one bit, and do the other on my own. Two issues: 1. The ceiling fan in my living room has a pretty significant wobble, to the extent that I am really not going to use it much until I can get it addressed. The electrician noticed that it made a fair amount of wind noise at higher speeds, but not that it was wobbling all over the darned place. My guess is that it needs a better brace up there as it is a heavy fan, but at no point did the installer address that as a concern, or make a recommendation. Because I cannot do the work up there on my own, I will hire a handyman to fix the wobble. Maybe that's something I cannot reasonably expect an electrician to handle well, but frankly it just seems like sub-par work. Not a complete failure, but not the A work that this company seems to have gotten from most everybody on Angie's List. 2. These fans came with wall controls, and hand-held remotes. The installer asserted to me that I could have one or another, but not both. A cursory read of the install instructions tells me differently, but apparently installing the wall unit was extra time that he didn't want to spend. I will do that myself, but I am disappointed that I paid for an electrician and then have to wire in the wall unit myself. This is a minor thing, but it adds to the impression that my (admittedly small) job was not important. The office was very quick to respond to me, and I was able to schedule an appointment easily, no complaints there.
