They were excellent. They did a very good job. At first we weren't expecting to pay that much but when he explained what he had to do and all the work had to be done from a big, high dangerous ladder, we were happy with the price. It took them 8 hours and 2 guys.
Description of Work: I used Cullen Construction. They did carpentry work but they had to do it with a ladder, because the tiny little window for ventilation fell inside and it fell like 8feet deep inside and they had to figure it out from a ladder, how to get the piece back up and he had to replace all the wood work.

Description of Work: I called Cullen Construction and Mr. Cullen came out that Saturday to see the work needing done. He seemed very knowledgable and told me I would hear from him late that week regarding the estimate. He was open about how tough certain aspects of the job would be (he did not like working on box gutters, pillars were in rough shape and needed replaced, porch would need to be propped up, etc.). I called that next Thursday night to see if I would be getting an estimate from him any time soon. He told me I would see it that weekend. It did not come over the weekend, I left him another message on Monday night and frankly have never heard back from him. He seemed like a good guy and I was looking forward to working with him. I know our house is old. He told me he did not know if it was worth doing a lot of work on it. Its been over a month and I have never heard back from him. My issue is not in the quality of his work. Its just that professionally you should respond or just indicate if you are not interested in taking the job.

My husband called Cullen Construction on a Monday & they were able to come the next day to install my door. The door I wanted hung was a hinged door, replacing a bi-fold, so the job was a little more complicated than usual. Upon arrival (right on time!), they discovered they needed additional material to complete the job. The went out & got what they needed. After returning, they discovered a glitch with the sizing, but were able to resolve the problem promptly after consulting with my husband. The door is up & looks great! These people are professional, courteous & clean-up after themselves.
Description of Work: Hung a pantry door in kitchen.

Bob Cullen and his crew were fantastic! We had two bathrooms (a powder room and a main hall bathroom) remodeled (none of the bathrooms had ever been updated in 21 years!). We had multiple contractors estimate the project, and Bob was hands-down the best fit for the job. He even accompanied my husband and I to Lowes to pick out floor tiles, wall tiles, a bathtub, etc. Bob even discussed paint colors with me for over an hour, picking up samples and helping me pick the correct color. He and his crew were diligent about keeping the house clean while they worked. The entire job went right on schedule. The results were better than we could have imagined! We will definitely be using Bob for our master bath remodel!

Bob and his crew were excellent: the quality of the work was terrific, they were professional and punctual, and found great solutions to problems associated with remodeling an old house. They finished the job on time and I was thrilled with the results. I would highly recommend them and will definitely use them again.

Approximate 2-week job involving demo of old ceramic tile in a sun room and replacing with a new, heated, ceramic floor. Job involved disconnecting and disposing of two base-board heaters. Job started on the date agreed upon. Prompt start, as promised, each and every day of the project. Very professional and close attention to detail. Exceeded expectations by fixing items that were not included in the contract (exterior concrete sealing, caulking, new quarter-round, painting). As a side note, I have never written an Angie's List review despite having used 10-15 contractors off of Angie's list; I felt Bob deserved to be recognized for his professionalism and workmanship. Highly recommended.

This guy is AWESOME! We moved into our house in the late summer, and had an extensive program of home improvements that we needed to finish by early October. The biggest job was the finishing out of our basement, which was effectively a shell, containing the remnants of several aborted efforts (by the previous owners) to convert it into useable space. We spent some time getting competitive quotes and design ideas from construction companies. Bob turned his bid around quicker than the others (usually a good sign in a contractor), and it turned out to win on price too. We invited Bob around for a second design discussion, after which we decided to give him the work. We've been extremely happy with everything that Bob's done. He has a collaborative approach to design, he gives good quality advice on how to get good quality/value, and was always open to changes of plan. He has some very good sub-contractors - we were amazed at how quickly the extensive dry-walling was done to a high quality, and his electrician has done other work for us outside of the scope of the project. Plus Bob does great carpentry work himself - we gave him some trickier work (replacing some poorly-hung doors elsewhere in our house with solid oak slabs, for example) all of which has been done to a high quality. The best thing though, was that Bob always made himself available and was usually on site when work was going on. When we were looking for contractors for this project, the most common warning that friends gave us was that their contractors had got sucked into other jobs, causing delays to their work. Throughout this extensive project, we saw progress every day, and we were never concerned that the work wouldn't be done on time. We can't recommend this company highly enough!
Description of Work: Complete finishing of a big (c 1,200 sq ft) basement, including the design and creation of two rooms, the fitting of a gas fireplace with an antique mantle, full wiring, hanging of doors and installation of a dehumidifier. Carpentry: The construction of a staircase from our (2nd floor) decling to our backyard, and the replacement of several 20' beams in our decking. Plus the replacement of four pre-hung doors with solid oak door slabs, one of which was turned into a split dutch-door.

We called Rob Cullen to install a new front door for us that we had previously paid Lowes to install. Due to some water damage to our subfloor at the door entry, we decided to have an independent contractor install it instead. Our first impression of Cullen Construction was immediately positive. Why? Because he actually took the phone call, made an appointment to come out and give us an estimate after we described what we needed done, and kept to his word. That alone is hard to find! He worked with our situation and was very flexible because we had been waiting for Lowes to get our door in after many months of delays and an error on the door frame finish. He stayed in touch with us so he could schedule us in as soon as the door order was finally corrected. Rob and his assistant did a wonderful job. They took their time to remove the old door and install the new one while being extremely careful not to damage the walls and floor. They also explained how they were going to repair the water damaged subfloor. After the door was installed, they applied new door trims, and also replaced a piece of finished hardwood floor board that we asked them to change out for us. Throughout the day, they kept the area very neat and clean. They were very professional and friendly. We are planning on having Cullen Construction do future work on our home before the year is over.
Description of Work: Rob picked up an entry door at Lowes that we had previously ordered. He removed and replaced our front entry door. He also repaired the subfloor at the door location due to some minor water damage.

Excellent, Bob and his crew were extremely professional, punctual and very neat. Did a fantastic job, the trim work is beautiful, great craftsmanship. They worked with us to make sure we got the best look for the space. Got the job done in a timely manner. We found the work to be of exceptional quality, the guys were a pleasure to work with and we will definitely use them again for our next project, highly recommended.
Description of Work: Bob and his crew installed 2 exterior doors; one large front entry door with leaded glass, transom and sidelights, one basement door, both requiring some carpentry work to fit. Also removed 2 large windows in dining room and installed a double patio door. Doors needed extensive interior and exterior trim.

Bob started the work on June 20, 2012 and completed it August 8, 2012 (he did take a week vacation during the project). Construction site was clean and organized. Bob kept us informed about the progress and gave us daily progress reports, along with plans for the next day. Great Job!
Description of Work: We hired Bob Cullen to construct a large deck on the back of our house, with a roof. Bob and his crew were very professional and kept the job site clean and organized, which was very important to us considering we have four young children. Bob was easy to work with, offered design ideas that would not only look good but save money, and was open to changes that we came up with as the project progressed. Bob handled all of the permits and inspections with the township with no problems or delays. The deck turned out better than we could have hoped for. Craftsmanship was top-notch and the attention to detail was evident in all aspects of the job. Materials - Pressure treated lumber for structure, Trex decking for floor, vinyl railings, roof with shingles and siding on gable to match house. Deck is 10 feet off the ground.

Great. Bob is such a nice, trustworthy, personable and capable guy. He made a stressful situation better for us by explaining what had to e done and taking care of it. I would definitely recommend him!
Description of Work: We were selling our house and the inspection revealed a few things that needed attention. We called Bob and he came over, looked at the inspection report and explained which parts he could and couldn't do. He ended up helping us with the sealing of some gaps in the roof flashing, securing / bracing areas of our deck and grounding a wire in our electrical room.

, he communicated that to us in advance. I have heard horror stories from many people with contractors. The experience with Bob was excellent. Terry Onufer, Mars, Pa.
Description of Work: We wanted to wait until Bob Cullen was finished with the kitchen and den/basement remodling before writing a review. Bob was absolutely the best. He was very clear with the estimate and vision. And when there were ideas that changed, (we added something or changed something), Bob worked with us Bob communicated by text, e mail, phone, which was great for our busy lives. * * We allowed Bob to do his job. We did not hover or micro-manage the project, and we did not change things continually (we did change a few things). The work was done well, and on time. We added bedrooms, and remodeled the entire kitchen.Bob communicated the whole way through the project, and we learned a great deal about our own house as well. Bob stayed on the project until it was finished, which was a huge positive to us. When Bob could not be there, or had to leave early

Although we only had two smaller jobs for Bob, his work was outstanding. We have just finished renovating an entire house and I wish I had hired him from the start. He was the best contractor we dealt with. The work he did was impeccable. He was willing to work with us as some of our wishes had changed during the project. Finally, he was always respectable and personable. If you desire his services call long ahead, he is pretty booked up. The other reviews are correct, he does a great job.

Bob showed up when expected and performed the work as rapidly as materials delivery and weather allowed. When we made changes, he accommodated them and he dealt well with complications. He did virtually all of the work on the sunroom and the deck except the new floor in the sunroom which I installed. We had an understanding from the beginning that I was going to do part of the work in the basement, including all of the painting. (He handled all of the painting for the sunroom and it was well done.) Near the end of the basement job, we provided the materials, and Bob installed a wonderful heated tile floor in the remodeled bathroom. We worked together on several projects related to the basement during the course of the work. I am very pleased with the work and I have tried to hire him again.
Description of Work: Bob Cullen (and crew) really did two major jobs for me, but they kind of flowed together. The first job was to rebuild and extend our sunroom that had been damaged in the previous winter, as well as reinforce our sinking deck and move the stairs. The second job was to frame and drywall half of the basement including framing and rough-in for the bathroom. He also installed cabinets, that we supplied, on both ends of the large main room in the basement.

When I called Bob, he was so NICE over the phone -- trying to help us find someone who could do the work we needed prior to the impending holidays. Alas, we couldn't schedule it before Christmas, but he did manage to squeeze us in as soon as he could. The thing that really resonated with us is that he is just such a nice guy. I felt that I could really trust him. When he came to give the estimate, he was very clear on what he could and couldn't do and was clear on the amount of time it would take and how much it would cost. The job ended up being exactly what he led us to expect at the exact time and cost he estimated. He and his partner worked quickly and quietly and also took some time to say hi to and coo at our little baby girl. Afterwards, we chatted a bit about Limerick, Ireland and Pittsburgh and we were generally very happy with the whole experience. I highly recommend him, as he will be honest and fair -- the two traits that are the most important I think when it comes to having work done in the home.

My husband and I contracted with Cullen Construction for a bathroom remodeling job. We bought a house with a bathroom that was stuck in 1985 ? green carpeting, steps leading up to the shower, green/gold wallpaper, wicker vanity and storage, textured ceiling, bad lighting, etc. We gave Bob some ideas and a color palate and he helped us refine our ideas into a beautiful ?Old world yet modern? bathroom. We had a few ?must haves? like a double sink vanity, a few open storage shelves, a closed storage closet with mirrored doors, and a whirlpool tub with glass French doors. Some of these ideas were not easy to accomplish and Bob worked very hard to find pieces that were exactly what we were looking for yet still within our budget. When the pre-made vanity that we liked turned out to be out of our price-range, Bob was able to find us a cabinet maker to construct the wood pieces that we wanted and matched the trim throughout the bathroom with the same stain. He accompanied us to pick out the quartz top, tile, fixtures, and cabinets at local businesses on a weekend when we were free. Bob was always able to take our ideas and help us find products that brought them to life. He kept us informed of the progress throughout the job and always consulted us for our opinion before making any big decisions. Bob?s ideas were always right in line with what we wanted, which really showed that he had taken the time to listen to us and understand our vision. He even found and corrected a problem with the support structure of our house along the way! During the 3 and a half weeks of work, Bob and Jeff were extremely prompt, friendly, courteous, and clean. They laid down material so they didn?t track dirt through the house, kept all of their tools in the garage or basement, and always swept up everything before they left. They installed our old toilet temporarily in the basement so we could use it while our main bathroom was under construction, which my husband liked so much we kept it there! They even let our cats back out of the attic each day when it was safe for them to roam around the house again! I could not have asked for better people to work with and we are completely satisfied with the work that they did. We will use them for any remodel that we plan to do in the future. Thanks again!

Mr. Cullen was very responsive and fit me in before family was coming (it was the guest room door that wouldn't shut). He gave very straight forward pricing info, and got straight to work. He was very detailed, planing and fitting the door a number of times. He took the door outside to plane so there was no dust (and swept when he was done). He then refit the lock/latch on the door, since it was now out of alignment that the door was level. It had not even occurred that this would be an issue - I am really glad he caught that. I definelty plan on using Mr. Cullen again and highly recommend him.
