They do their estimates by phone, which is a little different, but as long as you have the measurements, you should be fine. We called about 7 weeks before they were able to come, and they did a great job predicting when they would start our job, despite the fact that it was still several weeks out. They also call a few days before to confirm their start date. The two guys who finished our floors were nice, and did a pretty good job cleaning up, given all the dust that sanding generates. The only downside is that they dinged our plaster walls in a couple of places. All in all, we are happy with their work. The floors looks great.

They were able to fit us in the week after we called them, showed up early, and did the work unsupervised (i.e. when we weren't able to be there). They did a great job and the floors look great. They taped off/protected our oddly-shaped room and we didn't see any evidence of dust. The pricing was certainly comparable to the other companies we talked to. We would use them again.

When I opened our telephone conversation by asking when a representative might be available to come out to our house to provide an estimate and to discuss the work that we were looking to have done, the representative explained that the company does its estimates based only on square footage. Although I found this to be off-putting, I told the lady that I would take the measurements and call back. When I called back the next day, I spoke with the same representative and conveyed the measurements (for what it is worth, I do recall that the price estimate was generally competitive with the price I ultimately paid). At that point, I reiterated my desire to have an at-home consultation prior to scheduling the work. I explained that several years ago, when we asked a general handyman (not a flooring guy) if he could recommend a hardwood floor refinishing company to redo our kitchen floor, he briefly looked at the floor and suggested that he thought that the floor had already been refinished enough times that it was dangerously close to the tongue-and-groove. I explained to the ASF representative that this fellow had said that he doubted that our floor could take another sanding. I also mentioned that the guy was not a flooring expert and that my goal in asking for an on-site estimate was to avoid having ASF schedule a crew and bring out all of their equipment, only to conclude that they could not do the work and thereby lose an entire day of their time. Hearing this, the lady abruptly said that it would be useless to do an on-site estimate, since she was sure that the floors could not be refinished without ruining them. As she put it, even an untrained eye can easily tell, just by looking at a floor, when it is too close to the tongue-and-groove to be refinished. Since some non-flooring contractor had concluded that the floors could not be done, that was enough for her to conclude that it would be a waste of time for us to go forward with either an on-site estimate or scheduling the work. The lady added her conclusion that we would have a hard time finding any reputable company who would be willing do the work, but then offered the name of another company (the name of which I do not recall) and said that we might be able to get them to do it. Although the lady did not put it this way, the impression I had of this "referral" was that the other company was a bunch of hacks that would sand and refinish linoleum if you asked them to do so. Ultimately, another company (whose already high rating on Angie's List will be improved by our positive review in the coming days) was willing to come out to our house, look at our floors, and answer our questions, including the foremost question of "can it be done?" Notably, the owner of this other company was willing to come out to our house even after I had explained the old contractor's comments. Upon looking at our floors, the owner concluded that the work could be done and took the time to explain why he had reached that conclusion. Confident that our 100-year-old floors would not be ruined, we went forward with sanding and three coats of urethane, and the floors look tremendous. Perhaps ASF does not do in-house estimates as a matter of course. Perhaps ASF was so busy that it could not spare an hour of a worker's time. Perhaps the lady I spoke to was having a bad day. Perhaps ASF does great work (as their other ratings suggest). Regardless, when I relayed ASF's unwillingness to waste its time to the guy who did the work as we surveyed the beautifully finished floors, he put it best - "wow, that was pretty dumb of them."
Description of Work: I contacted A Satin Finish and several other companies that I found through Angie's List in early May of 2011 for estimates on sanding and refinishing heart pine wood floors in the kitchen, pantry, and home office of our 100-year old home. I included A Satin Finish in my calls because of their comparatively high ratings here on Angie's List.

The member did contact us about getting his floors refinished. Everyone that calls us is told the same thing about getting us the measurements and most already do have them the ones that do not generally understand that we cannot go to every house to take measurements. We do 3 or 4 at-home consultations a week so we absolutely take the time for customers who feel they have a problem that needs to be addressed. We don't care if its a simple stain in the floor or in your case member a floor that may or may not be able to be salvaged. The lady on the phone whom you keep referring to ( JoEllyn) has been doing her job over 20 years and has heard as much as we have seen. We have done floors that no other company would touch so for you to make a accusations about her basically blowing you off are unjust. This isnt an issue of we didnt want to do your floor because you had a problem this is a we didnt do your floor because of time restraints. You called and wanted your floors done within a specific time frame. From the get go JoEllyn told you that we could not do them for you because we had no available time. Member, it is you who stated that all floor sanders are useless on the phone to JoEllyn because nobody would come to see your floors. You wanted us to come to your house and look at your floors knowing we couldnt do them. It sounds like the company who did do them is just like us!!!! They must not have been too busy for your time allotment so they did what we do 3 or 4 times a week visit customers and ease their concerns and answer any and all questions they may have. You may or may not like the way we do business but from your conversation( all floor sanders are useless) with Joellyn on the phone you had already been told by other companies that your time frame was impossible! We are not a next day service company and this time of year our customers expect to wait for at least 6 to 8 weeks not 2 ! Had our schedules coincided I guarantee your floors would look just as good if not better so I am sorry if you feel wronged in some way. For the comment at the end about the guy who did your floor putting it best! Really! He had time we didnt be reasonable! Perhaps it was you having a bad day as well!!

I was able to get an estimate on the phone by providing square footage. The people who came to do the work sanded down an area of the floor and tried a few stains so I could see how it would look. The floor had previously been refinished by people who were not professionals, so there were some uneven spots. When they were finished, it looked better than it had when we initially moved into the house.

I thought Sean and Jason were very professional. They worked hard all day - not stopping for lunch so they left about 3:00 p.m. It was obvious to me that they knew what they were doing and had done this type of work for a long time. The bill of about $1,700 was exactly what was quoted to me over the telephone and was based on the measurements of the two rooms that were refinished. I thought the price was very reasonable. I would recommend A Satin Finish to anyone who need this type of floor refinishing done. My floors look beautiful now!
Description of Work: Sean & Jason from A Satin Finish arrived as promised on Tuesday morning 4/18/2011 and began "taping off" all of my kitchen cabinet openings (cabinets & drawers) as well as those in my husband's study which adjoins my kitchen. The hardwood floors were badly in need of refinishing. Then they put plastic over the two kitchen doorways and went to work sanding the floors. They asked what color I would like to have the floors stained and showed me three samples close to what I'd requested. I chose one and they put a coat of stain on before they left for the day. The second day, they arrived just as promptly and put a coat of polyurethane on the floors. They skipped a day (Wednesday) in order to let the floors dry and came back to apply a second coat on Thursday. That coat had to dry for 48 hours until we could walk on it.

A great experience, from the initial phone call to the final appointment. When they said they would call or show up, they did, and on time. I had my floors refinished and decided not to use a stain and I couldn't be happier with the results. They were able to get almost all of the stains out (I knew going into it that not all stains can come out and I had some serious water stains) and the finish truly is satin like. The two men that did the work were very nice and efficient. I also appreciate the fact that they only wanted payment when the job was done and to my satisfaction. Just an FYI they do leave the dust behind in garbage bags. They left my dust next to the driveway so I can easily take them to the curb on garbage day. I have absolutely no issues with this, but I know some people may. I am sure if you asked them they would take it away. I would also like to recommend that if you have your floors redone to give your house a day or so to air out. The smell of the finish is quite strong and could make you, your children or pets ill.

Overall very pleased with experience. Work was very high quality and all done on time. I appreciated that the house was relatively dust free when finished. The oil based smell is strong and lasts for several weeks, I wouldn't recommend staying in the house while the work is being done. My only slight regret is only getting 2 coats of poly. I would have felt a little better about longevity with 1 more coat. However, they talked me out of the third coat and they are the experts.
Description of Work: Sanded and refinished floors in dining room, living room, hallway and 3 bedrooms including closets. Filled all nail holes from old carpet tack boards with wood putty. Taped off vents and isolated the rest of the house from dust. No stain used, just natural oil based polyurethane finish.

They did a fantastic job in refinishing my floors. They made repairs to a missing board and you can't tell at all what's new vs. old. They also noticed a weak board and took care of that one as well. Minimal scuffing on the baseboards. Good job in keeping the dust down.

They did a very nice job. The hardwood floor had been under a carpet for 30 years. When we removed it, it left an uneven surface between the living room and the hallway. After completing the job, they returned with a small piece of wood, stained to match the floor and cut to fit the doorway, which eliminated the tripping hazard. No extra charge. I thought that was a nice touch.

They came in one day and sanded the floors after they had taped off the vents and sealed the doors with plastic sheeting. This took about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The next day they hand sanded the corners and applied the first coat of the finish. We did not have any stain applied. Two days later they came back and applied the final coat of finish. We left the rooms sealed until the next day. The house smelled from the finish for about a week but the floors look great. There was an minimal amount of dust just outside the doorway they went in and out of (resealing each time). We were told we could walk on the floors after the second day but we waited for 3 days and even then it was only to hang the blinds and drapes so everything did not echo so much. The next day we started to move thing back in.

I Stupidly installed off white berber carpet in my living room 9 years ago and was sick of the constant struggle to keep it spot free ( I have two boys and two large dogs!) I called A Satin Finish for a quote to refinish the wood floors underneath the carpeting. I was quoted $675 for a 12 X 18 room. We had to remove the carpeting because they don't do that, but we didn't mind. They arrived an hour earlier than the office said they would (which was a welcome surprise). They quickly taped off the rooms adjoining the one to be refinished and got to work. They sanded down the room and filled some big nail holes and easily removed the stained wood (dog accidents?) with their sander. They put the first coat of polyurethane on. This took about 4 hours for the whole visit. They returned two days later when they said they'd be there and put on the second coat. It took a little over an hour. After two days we were using the room. The floor is BEAUTIFUL! This is a great company and I will use them again if I need another room refinished. Don't be afraid of dust going everywhere. They sealed off the room and I never saw a speck of dust on anything!

They did an absolutely amazing job. From the very beginning, they were professional and kept in contact as the process progressed. They taped off the rest of the house and, considering all the sanding that was done, the dust was surprisingly minimal. They also met with us and stained / poly'd a few colors so we could pick which one we liked the best. They did an amazing patch/replace job, using old wood cut from where our new kitchen cabinets will go to do the replacement and then replaced the wood under the cabinets (which will be hidden) with the new wood. This made sure the patch work wouldn't be noticeable when stained. Once the job was done, we were stunned with how beautiful the floors turned out. Everyone that comes over is also amazed. I honestly can't think of one gripe or problem with this company and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Refinished all 1st floor hardwood, including the kitchen which had 3 layers of flooring which I tore up prior to their work. Also had a closet, under radiators, and a flight of stairs refinished. Finally, there were spots of stained wood and a hole in the floor that went to the basement from an old 1/2 wall. My house is approx 70 years old.

They continuously made errors. The finishing solution had bubbles in it, and they sealed in hair, sand and dirt. They had to come back three times to redo it, and at last, enough was enough and we proceeded to go to a magistrate to get our money back. Mr. Klein, the owner, used pictures of a home that was not even ours for the case.

We have come a long way since 1995. Yes we did make mistakes in the beginning and unfortunately we made them on your floor. If I recall right the only reason we had to go to the magistrate is because you wanted more money out of us than we originally charged you. We gave you your money back but you were not satisfied. Mr Kline is no longer with us so I can't tell you what he did or didn't do but I can only assume any picture he brought was of your floor because that would only make sense. Once again, we are sorry for your troubles but we all make mistakes and most of us learn from them. In the past 15 years since we have done your floor we have taken every measure to ensure our customers are happy and satisfied with the QUALITY of work our customers are now accustomed too.

I called to get a telephone estimate and scheduled the work. The workers arrived and immediately began prepping the space by replacing boards, measuring for thresholds and sealing bookcases and entrances to other rooms. They put down several stain samples on floor they sanded so I could choose. They returned the next day and finished the sanding, stained the floors and put down one coat of poly. They returned on Thursday to put the second coat of poly down. During this entire process, the workers were very considerate and worked with me to devise a way I could gain access to my upstairs without stepping on the floors. The entire process was smooth and hassle free. The workmanship is wonderful - the floors never looked so good, and the pet stains are sufficiently faded. I would use these folks again, and have already recommended them to two other people. These folks are great!

They did exactly what they said they were going to do. They did the work in the time frame they gave us. They told us what was going to happen. There were no surprises and the original estimate was very close to the actual cost. It is kind of no frill and straight forward. Overall it went well. We called to get an estimate and they were able to give an accurate one over the phone. During phone call, we were told that the entire process would take 3 days - a Tuesday, Wednesday, and maybe the Thursday. The crew came on Tuesday as planned. When they did not return on Wednesday, we called. The woman who answered explained that they would skip a day and return Thursday to coat. She then explained that the floors would not be dry until the following Monday evening. This was not communicated well during the appointment set-up. But, the crew returned on Thursday and completed the job. We let it dry over the weekend as directed. And now we have BEAUTIFUL floors - we are very very pleased!

The guys from A Satin Finish were excellent to work with and they did a fabulous job on our floors! Their receptionist made every effort to accommodate my very tight schedule and when there were a few scheduling issues they called immediately to confirm changes worked for me. They arrived on time and immediately got to work. They taped off all surfaces and contained the dust created by the sanding. They were on time and very efficient in their coating returns. They did just a wonderful job. When the workmen arrived from another company to install our carpets they raved over our hardwoods and asked who refinished them. I have already recommended A Satin Finish to a number of people. I was impressed with their professionalism, efficiency, and honesty. I had estimated my square footage too high. They readjusted their estimate and our actual cost was $400 less than they quoted. We would have never known that their was an overage if they had not told me. I appreciate their honesty and it is a testament to their work ethic. Thank you - and thanks for the gorgeous floors!

I found A Satin Finish on Angie's list, and called them. Its a family business, and the person I spoke with was the Mom (I'm ashamed to say that I forgot their names, I'm terrible at that). She was very nice and very helpful with many different tips, even thoughs that would'nt financially benefit them, that's why I love going with family businesses. I had about 580 sq. feet to get refinished and she quoted me at 1,550, about $2.75 a square foot. After checking around, this is about the going rate. We scheduled the guys to come by, and they were right on time. One of the guys is the son in the business, the other must've been a hired hand. The son was very nice and very helpful. Since my wife couldn't be there, he said he could leave some stains on the floor at the end of the day and we could come by and pick out what we liked. This worked perfectly for us, especially since the names didn't correspond with the internet colors. They called the next day to ask if we'd decided on a stain, and we did. They showed up the next day and finished sanding and stained the floors. Be aware, the stain smells something horrible. Luckily we didn't have to stay there since we had just bought the house. After a day or two, they came back and sanded lightly, and stained the second coat. The floors look great, we took pictures and will post them in a couple days. We were very impressed with the quality of work. The bottom line is, you get very good quality for a going rate.
Description of Work: Two guys from Satin Finish came over at 9:30am and we went over the work. Three rooms were being refinished (den, living room and dining rooms). They said that sanding would take that day and into the next, and on the second day they would also stain the floors. After a day for the stain to sit, they would then come back and stain it a second time. After a couple days people could then talk on them. Since we had just purchased the house, we gave them the garage door code and they helped themselves in the second morning. We talked about different stains, and upon leaving the first day of work, they left 6 spots with different stains on them. My wife and I chose the stain we liked and when they called that night we let them know. The two guys then came over on the third work day (Saturday) and they did the last coat and we paid them. The floors look beautiful. The guys taped around the rooms so that dust wouldnt' get in other rooms, like the kitchen and upstairs. Everything was very professionally done.

Since the remodeling was just finished when I had them do the refinishing work, I was wary that I would have to touch up paint etc. Much to my delight I had to do nothing! The cleanup that they performed was excellent and I did not have to do a thing! I was extremely pleased and have been telling everyone of such a fantastic job! Both Shawn and Jason were very friendly and courteous and treated you as a very important customer of theirs.
Description of Work: I called prior to the completion of my remodeling work on my 3rd Floor. The company indicated that they could come to the house within two weeks and they made arrangements to start the work as they promised. The job entailed sanding my entire third floor and 14 steps leading up to the third floor which also included a landing. The work was done during the winter and they were very good about not getting any of the rest of the house dirty as they set up. The flooring that they had to refinish was originally covered with paint and since my house was built over 100 years ago, they cautioned that the paint should be removed prior to them starting the refinishing. Once I complete this, they came to the house on the first day for sanding. The very next day was staining and the first coat of oil based polyurethane. They came back a few days later to lightly sand and during this time noted that a few boards should be replaced. They replaced these at no extra charge and refinish them and indicated that they would have to come back the next day to finish the work. The very next day they returned and finished the application of the second coat. They cleaned and removed all of their debris.

The final result looks awesome. We had no idea our oak floor had this much potential. Excellent job! First, they taped up the kitchen and bathrooms, there was almost no dust in these areas after they were done. The first day (Monday) they sanded with a smaller sander around the edges and started filling in some of the holes and cracks with wood putty. They also prepared three smaller patches with color samples (neutral and two different stains - we decided to go with neutral). The second day (Tuesday) they brought in the big machine and rough sanded the entire floor area. They also filled in more holes and cracks. At this point there was a lot of dust on the windowsills, I was a little bit concerned, but they cleaned up very nicely when they were done. The third day (Wednesday) they scraped out the corners, did the fine finish sanding and put down the first coat of polyurethane. Three days later (Saturday) they came out to put down the second coat. We decided to go with glossy, rather than satin, because we grew up with glossy hardwood floors and shiny finish just "spoke to us". Monday morning we were walking on our beautiful new floor. They cleaned up after themselves really nice. They did warn us that there would be a little bit of scuffing of the baseboards. Well, I would call it more than just a little bit of scuffing (there was some minor damage to trim as high as knee level), but a little bit of touch-up paint fixed everything. The floors now look stunning. Beautiful old oak, all kinds of rich shades and intriguing patterns.
Description of Work: They refinished the hardwood floors in my home: 1108 sq ft total, entry, living room, dining room, hallway and three bedrooms - all one continuous surface area. They sanded the old whitewash finish off, filled in holes and cracks, then put down two coats of polyurethane. One strange thing: they gave me a quote over the phone, based on my measurement of the total floor area. All the other contractors came out and did the measurement themselves. Anyhow, everything worked out fine at the end. The three companies I contacted, all top rated on Angie's List, all came in within $100 of each other. I picked A Satin Finish because they seemed to have the best procedures for dust control, which was important to me.

We didn't end up having any service done, but when I called for an estimate, it was a strange experience. They wanted to estimate the cost over the phone, but as I didn't have measurements and as this is for an insurance claim, I wanted everything to be done exactly and thus asked to have someone sent out. It's an understatement to suggest that this idea was met with resistance. Then, the representative asked me if we had pine floors, which we do. Once I affirmed that the floors are pine, the call ended very abruptly with a we can't help Goodbye. I totally understand not wanting to work with old pine floors but she was off the phone with no explanation in a disconcertingly short period of time. It just struck me as very rude and abrupt. I'm sure they do lovely work and maybe this was just an off day, but it was a jarring experience.
Description of Work: We had a roof leak, which caused some flooring damage and I wanted to get an estimate on sanding and repairing the floors.
