I am no expert on slate roofs, but I've learned a lot this year. After the work above, the west side gutter still allowed water to cascade over the side and pool in the yard below. We had had a lot of interior damage from leakage on that side. I called the original slate roof company with the higher estimate. They came out, agreed to do the work of repair and replacement of that west side gutter, and to vet the entire roof and replace the synthetic slates with real slate. They have been here for a month, and are almost done. It's actually one guy who knows and respects slate roofs. Our roof is now sound, and the slates look like they belong together, and the pole gutter on the west side has been completely supported and rebuilt. I've spent a small fortune on this roof, and I'm not happy about it. Reiter should not be doing historic preservation work -- period. When I originally spoke with them, I thought I made it clear that we love the house and the roof and want to keep it if at all possible. I didn't know what was possible -- I thought perhaps the roof was failing and our best bet was to replace it. The owner must have thought I wanted a cheap fix, and if I conveyed that it's my error. But I would suggest that anyone who wants to keep a slate roof and the aesthetic and historic value it adds to their home should not hire Reiter for the work -- slate repair and pole gutter repair are not their strong points.
Description of Work: We have an 1890 Queen Anne with the original slate roof and pole gutter system. I asked for an assessment of the roof's viability and cost for making it sound, since we had leaks after Hurricane Irene. The owner assured me that the roof would last for years, and his company was experienced with slate roof repairs. Their price was much lower than another slate repair company, and we hired them to do the job. The work order included "cleaning and sealing all gutters, cleaning a flat roof and sealing the flashings (2 year guarantee) and for the slate roof, inspection entire roof, repair 25-30 missing slates, installing new slates cut to size and secured in place, replace all badly broken and cracked slates with new slates. Seal all necessary areas with silicone sealant. Secure loose slates. Seal all necessary flashings on entire roof." The crew showed up on time, told me that they wanted to use synthetic slates rather than the quarried slates as they were better handling, all their clients love them, etc. I felt pressured and had been putting off getting the roof fixed for a long time, so I said OK. The work which I thought might take days was done in a few hours. In the midst of the job, they told me my roof needed an additional $3,000 worth of work -- replacing the ridge metal. They said it might not be absolutely necessary, but recommended. I talked it over with my husband, and we decided to wait. I paid the bill and hoped for the best. Later, as the house was being painted, I noticed some flaws especially the end of one of the gutters that looked all chewed up. I had noticed that the synthetic slates looked bad -- thicker, grayer, not consistent with the rest of the slate. I wrote a letter to the owner, who responded immediately --rather emotional -- but wanting to make it up. So, I hired them to come back out and fix the chewed up east side gutter. They also cleared out a gutter on the west side of the house, which wasn't working well but the owner told me not to worry about it.

Response from Reiter Roofing
Member, I am sorry you were disappointed in our work. Originally when I had come out, we had given you an estimate to replace the entire roof with shingles, and based on the expense, you opted to go with a repair instead. We perform a lot of slate repair and replacement work all over Philadelphia and the surrounding areas, and have never received a complaint like this. We have done work on properties for customers who are on the historic preservation board for the city of Philadelphia, and they were more than happy. All of the work done on the property was discussed before we proceeded with the work, including the use of the synthetic slates. If you didn't want to use them all you had to do was tell us not to. We do install synthetic slate often, because they are easier to work with, and we have never had a complaint from anyone about them until now. The coloring may not match exactly because the slates that you have on your house have been exposed to the elements for a long period of time and the synthetic slate is new. We did not intend to do a "cheap fix" but we did what we did based on our discussions. I am sorry that is not what you wanted. I know that you had emailed us in July with some concerns, and I was under the impression that the problem had been rectified and you were happy with the outcome. I am sorry you were disappointed with the work, I wish you the best. -Evan

I called the company after I took advantage of the deal. The booked my appointment right away, showed up on time and did a great job. They left no mess, which if you have had your gutters cleaned before can be very messy!
Description of Work: Great gutter cleaning service. I would call them again and would accept a call from them. On time and very thorough work.

I sent them an e-mail and explained my problems. There was a partial collapse of her dropped ceiling and we thought that it was because of a leak on the roof. The guy came, checked the problem, and he found out that there wasn't any leak on the roof. He found out that the storm window was not down and it let the rain water to come in, which caused the ceiling to collapse. He was very nice and really helpful. Even though it was not a roofing problem, he checked the windows of every floor to find out what was causing the problem.

The roof had been leaking periodically for some time, and several attempts to fix had been unsuccessful. I called Reiter, and they arrived within a day or two at the time agreed upon. They recommended a layer of rubber be added along the partition between our roof, and the neighbor's roof (twin house). The also suggested that the roof be recoated, and a few broken slate tiles be replaced. I didn't shop around for price, but the cost seemed reasonable for the work completed, particularly with the inclusion of a chimney cap installation. The company honored their Angie's List coupon. So far, there has not been any leaking. I'd like to wait for a decent snow and thaw to declare the work a complete success, but thus far, it appears that Reiter has successfully fixed this problem. Overall, I would say this was a very good experience, and would recommend Reiter.

excellent service and excellent price. I never at any time though that I was being taken over. I was extrememly confident using this company and highly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Reiter roofing came out and fixed the leak in my roof and repaired many area's that I have been having a problem with. Not only did the fix the problem but they were very nice to deal with. Not to many companies call back when you leave a message. Not only did the owner call back but he called within a hour of my calls. More companies should do business like this.

I first found Reiter Roofing on Angie's list. I have been in my home for 23 years and have already had to have my roof replaced twice prior to this most current roof, also had the shingled roof replaced twice. This house has always had a leak problem in the front where my house connects to my neighbors on both sides. I am very hopeful that Reiter has been able to fix my problem. I left them an email through Angie's list and received a call the very next day, even though we were rapidly approaching the Christmas holidays. I spoke with Opal who was very professional and set up an appointment when I could be home to have my roof inspected. Evan came out on the day and at the time agreed on. It was very apparent that Evan has excellent knowledge of roofing. He came inside to get a better idea of where my leaks were occurring. He was very thorough and personable. I felt totally comfortable with him regarding his knowledge and honesty. I tend to be fairly skeptical because I have not always had the best experiences with contractors. We agreed upon the work to be done and he told me that the work would be done within the following two weeks but that I would receive a written estimate first. I had a few questions when I received my estimate so I called the office. Evan returned my call quickly and answered my questions to my satisfaction. I was called with my scheduled day for work which was New Year's Eve day. I had gone out early in the morning and when I returned around 8:15am, they were already on the roof working. I had questions and Joe who was the most senior person on the job patiently answered my questions. I didn't like the way one section in the rear looked after the metal coping was removed and he suggested a fix and took care of it for me. I also asked after the job was finished if he would drive around to the front of my house because I had questions regarding my shingled roof I wanted to ask. Obviously without going up to the shingled roof he could not give me exact suggestions or observations but did bring some things to my attention that I can't believe I had not noticed before. I am very pleased and plan to have them back in the spring and possibly replace my shingled roof. I never felt pressured into getting anything done and everyone was very patient in answering all of my questions. When they left, I called the office and paid my bill with a credit card. I spoke with Keith (?) could be Kevin (sorry, can't remember). He told me to let them know if I have any problems with the roof. I will update my review after some time has passed but as of right now, I would definitely refer them.
Description of Work: First they had to dry the roof because we had just had snow and sleet which left the roof coated with a layer of ice. Installed a flat rubber roof. Removed metal coping over party wall and covered with rubber ensuring that both sides and top were completely covered and sealed. Installed white aluminum metal edge capping. They also repaired areas to my shingled roof around the chimney. There had been quite a bit of debris on the roof which they also removed and they swept and cleaned after the work was done.

This is a completely bogus report. We did no estimate, no work. and had no communication with this person. They should not be aloud to make frivolous reports and grades when work is not done. Please read my reports and you will see this is not how we work. We take these things way to seriously. It's a disgrace that a competitor can leave a report like this and get away with it. This upsets me greatly.

They are wonderful. They are probably the best roofer in the city. I would recommend them to anybody. We had three roofers look at our roof. We paid money to each one. Each one did something and it still leaked. Reiter came in and accessed the problem. They fixed the problem and it hasn’t leaked since then. They did a beautiful job. The pad that the air conditioning units were sitting on had eaten through the roof material. They put the air conditioning units on a 4 X 4 pressure treated material and below that they put new roofing paper. They also put pads down to stop it from ever going through again. They did a beautiful job painting the chin roof as well. Roofers are one of the few people that are licensed to get that paint. The guy offered to just patch any leaks at the back part of the house free of charge when he was up on the roof for painting. They were very professional and they took off their shoes before they came into the house.
Description of Work: Reiter Roofing Inc fixed a leak problem in our roof. They had to fix the area where our air conditioning units were. We also had them back to paint our chin roof.

From the initial inquiry to the actual work they were very professional and responsive.
Description of Work: I had spoken to several roofers about replacing my roof. The previous roofer did a poor job of smoothing out low spots in the roof and it was causing leaks. Reiter was the only company to actually take back part of the roof material during the estimate and look for damage to the roof plank. They confirmed no damage to the roof plank, built up low spots and replaced the roof with a new torch down, granular roof. They were timely, performed thorough work and provided a knowledgeable explanation of all the materials used. My neighbor also used Reiter for a roof repair and were very satisfied with the work and price.

My kitchen roof sprouted a leak a few months ago that had progressively been getting worse with each major rain storm. The kitchen is an addition to my 2-story home and has a rooftop deck on top of it. So I had pulled up a few deck boards in the are of the leak and didn't see any problems with the roof. I had already received two other estimates for repairing and replacing the roof and deck before I called Reiter for an estimate. When they showed up for the estimate, they were on time and attentive as I described the issue prior to looking at the leak and roof. As soon as we walked onto the deck, the roofer stated that my roof was in great shape and it was actually the connection of the addition to my house. Therefore, he suggested that they install flashing along the deck edge and seal any holes in the wall along that area. He also recommended that I paint the door frame to seal it from retaining moisture and install a storm door to further protect the door frame and connection to the house (Reiter doesn't perform this type of work so I have had another Contractor do so). Lastly, he suggested coating the top roof since it had been over 3 years since the last coating; not to mention that they would already be at my house performing work on the lower roof. I received a call about a week later to schedule the work, which occurred a few days after that call. The workers were on time and fully explained everything they were going to do. They were friendly and cleaned up once they were done. I really appreciated Reiter telling me what the real cause of the leak was and not trying to do more work than what was necessary. It certainly saved me money in the long term. I will certainly be recommending them to anyone I know who needs roofing work done.
Description of Work: Reiter installed flashing along the connection of my rooftop deck to my house and sealed all holes in the stucco at the same location. In addition, they recoated my second story roof.

We resolved other water issues related to poorly installed windows by employing a competent window firm to install properly framed windows, but still had occasional signs of water on the ceiling of one bedroom after heavy rains. Reiter Roofing correctly diagnosed this as being due to water getting through an old chimney and the problem has not recurred since they addressed it.

of course there was no job done, however the roofing team would have done my roof do to its knowledge, and eagerness to help, if it wasn't for a slight price difference to a competitor. over all, i was very impressed.
Description of Work: the estimate and response of the roofing team went very well. the team was, punctual, polite, and eager to give its expertise. my roof was in bad shape, and needed to be replace, so they took every length to ensure i understood what was wrong, and what needed to be done. however polite, and professional, the roofing team did not win the bid do to its slightly higher price then a competitor. i didnt use this team for the service I will always receive estimates from this company.

This is a difficult review due to it being 'roofing work'. I am a desk jockey (office work) therefore I couldn't/wouldn't go on my roof to verify what was done. However, the services I was supposed to receive were: tightening seams, coating, clean drain box, etc. as I had a leak in my bedroom. The initial call from 'Charlie' after inspection was a positive one, as he took the time to explain my options, and gave me info on the condition of my roof. He was very patient and answered all my questions. I felt the most comfortable with this company as opposed to a few others in which i received quotes. Charlie was upfront, telling me they were booked for a few weeks and i would receive a call the day before the job. A month passed (which i was fine with as I was told upfront it may take a few weeks) and finally my day arrived. Well, the crew of three arrived about 12;30pm on a Thursday. By 1:30 pm they were done. In fact, only one guy seemed to have done anything, with the other two guys yelling to the guy on the roof as they languished around the work truck. A lot of 'good natured' cursing amongst fellow roofers which I could hear, and one of them even said "you know they are home right ; cut it out'. Ten minutes later they were gone. Then I received multiple calls in the next few days reminding me to send the check that I had already mailed. I'm skeptical about the work that was done because of the short time period that they were here. Nonetheless, I haven't had a leak thus far but not sure if I would contact them again. In hindsight, I should have contacted someone to simply clean the drain box for $75 then waited to see if I continued to experience the leak. So a lesson learned for this consumer. EDIT: After my review I received a call from Mr. Reiter (the owner of the company) who wanted more information regarding my experience. He was attentive to my concerns, and immediately went to my property to re-inspect the job to make sure it was properly done. He did so, and e-mailed several (about 10) pictures detailing what was done to allow me to 'see' their work. In addition, he cleaned my drain box (again) and even did additional work (which was NOT part of what their assignment was). He also offered me steep discounts on future maintenance services and other work. In all, I have to say I was very impressed with Mr. Reiter's response to my review and will certainly advise others to use their services with confidence as the job will get done. I will be contacting them in a few months for maintenance after the winter snow months.

Communication and site visit was fine. It's just they priced out a replacement job when I really looking for a repair.
Description of Work: UPDATE - On reflection, I think it possible that there was a miscommunication between myself and Reiter. I was looking for a short term repair option. Reiter was probably looking at was best for long-term ownership. I still wouldn't hesitate to consider them for a roof repair. We've had a leak in our roof 1950's NE Philly airlight skylight) I joined Angie's List, and picked two roofers that have very good ratings, and have had some reviews from within 5 miles. Roofer 'A' (Reiter) said because of the age of the roof (25+ yrs), I need a new roof. They recommend a rubber roof with a 10yr transferable warranty, about $1900. When asked about the skylight leak, they said the skylight should also be replaced: $575 for a replacement 'airlight' one, or $850 for a dome one with a pull-out screen and operable (w/ a wand) opening. So, total cost ~$2500-$2800. Roofer 'B' said "you have a good roof, it just needs a major service". They provided a written detailed estimate of the work. tThere needs to be patching around the perimeter of the roof and skylight area (skylight getting a rubber patch). They offer a 2 yr transferrable warranty, The agent said they'd write up a certification letter stating that the roof is under warranty. Price is $495. Both knew our plans to sell the house within 6 months. Reiter's cost made no sense, so I went with roofer B. They showed up as scheduled, and completed with work. Hurricane Sandy was a couple of weeks later, a pretty decent test of their work. No leaks during that or since. Will whomever stays in the house eventually need a new roof, I'd say yes. And the original skylight is pretty drafty, though a storm window in the skylight area is an effective sealent as one could hope for. So, if I was going the replacement route, would Reiter's price be good, not sure.

Reiter Roofing quickly responded to my request for an estimate. I don't have much experience with roofing but the price seemed fair. Everyone was very professional and I would use them again.

My wife was home when he came, he got up on the roof and replaced the shingle that had blown off during hurricane Sandy. In addition he scoped out the rest of the roof and sealed all around our ridge vent, and all of our pipe vents. The key to it was that when he left we felt that the roof was in good shape. As far as the siding is concerned when the original man came to estimate the job, he got up on the roof to see the extent of the damage, and in the process he managed to snap the vinyl siding back in place!!

We have tried to contact you about this issue. I am very satisfied with the services I received. They were preventative/maintenance, so I don't really have a known before & after. I do not have access to the roof, but Evan's assessment was in line with what the inspector made known to me, everyone I spoke with at Reiter was professional, and the work is guaranteed. They were incredibly prompt, and their service is consistent with the reviews I've read on Angie's List. I'd recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I recently bought a house, and requested an estimate from Reiter Roofing to address some issues that were made known to me during the inspection: the flat roof needed to be sealed and the chimney had some brickwork that needed to be repaired. Evan promptly returned my calls; his team was there when he said they would be; the estimate was in line with what the inspector told me to expect, and I went ahead with the work. The roof was sealed, and the chimney received a new type of coating that addressed the issues and also minimized the cost, compared with masonry. The drains were also cleared, and the work is guaranteed for 2 years. Evan's estimate included an Angie's List discount--- he brought the discount to my attention!

I had multiple leaks throughout my house that have been lingering for years and had recently gotten worse. I called and Chalie came out the next day for an estimate. Not only did Chalie fix my biggest issue which turned out to be a fairly easy fix, he helped me trouble shoot some of the other leaks which were not actually coming from the roof at all. I had roofers in the past come and tell me what I needed and it never got rid of the leaks. Chalie pointed out my deck door could be an issue as well as the mason work above my window. He was able to recommend a couple of people to help me with those who were also great. I had him come out again to do some additional maintenance on another area of my roof. For the 1st time in 10 years I dont have a single leak in my house...even after the recent Hurricane!
Description of Work: Roof maintenance and upkeep on 2 areas (upper roof and deck level) including areas around drain.

Reiter had an estimator out within 2 days of my initial call. Since the work was on a property I was in the process of selling, I was required to replace the roof in the sales agreement. Reiter's estimator disagreed with the severity of the problems in the inspection report and provided a reasonable repair/replace option that was agreeable to the buyer and myself, saving me about $2000. Due to poor weather, the work was not able to be done when first planned; unfortunately they can't control when it rains. When the work was done, I was unable to be on site while the job was done. When I arrived the crew was gone, there was no trace of any waste anywhere in the yard. The only way I could tell that they had been there was to actually go up and inspect the roof myself. I've never seen work done where there was absolutely no trace of the crew's presence before. Quick response, reasonable pricing and fantastic treatment of the property - I'll use them again if I need roofing on another property.
Description of Work: Reiter Roofing was contracted to replace the roof on a house which I was in the process of selling.
