Ian Truelove, the Contractor gave us 3 payments to total ~8000.00, First payment a downpayment, 2nd payment halfway through, 3rd payment at completion. Started work 3 days after agreed. Each day after he we never knew if he was coming or not and even when. I woiuld have to call him everyday. When I asked him to communicate with us and let us know his schedule, he agreed but that lasted one day. I stressed that I would gladly be available to let him in as long as I knew when. Sometimes he would come early and stay 2 hours. He would say he has to purchase some supplies and he would be back. Then we would wait and he would never come back. On 4 events he and his sons showed up without tools and asked to use mine. I found this very unprofessional. When I had no other choice but to trust him and let him work in my house unattended he went through my house to find tools he could use. This included my ladder, extension cords, and heavy duty trash bags. Well before he finished half the work, (which was clearly defined as halfway point), he insisted we give him half of the middle payment even though this isn't what we agreed to. He then started telling us his estimate was too low and we needed add ons. For example the estimate called for painitng dining room. He said after this doesn;t include ceiling. In the basement he refused to paint the closet doors. This should have been included in the estimate and I feel he gave us a a low price to get us to agree then just kept adding. On one occasion he called me soon after leaving and said his spackler was on way over and would I please let him in. I waited 3 hours and he never showed up. All of the old construction that he removed, he placed outside my house and refused to take it with him. He repeatedly told me he would take it at the end. He took half about a week after he finished his work and is refusing to come get the old carpet. He didn't even cut it properly for us to take to the curb for trash pickup and refused to take care of that. The last think I want to put on record was his level of professionalism. It was non-existant. I would never allow this man back into my house and I hope that anyone thinking of hiring him will have a chance to read this. The only thing in his favor I will say is that some of his work was quality at best. Not great but not bad. In the end though we spent betwween 12 and 13k for a job he estimated at 8k. The extras we wanted were only about 1.5k extra. The rest were "little" odds and ends he found that of course he knew about when he wrote estimate. Us being novices were truly blindsided.
