 + -1 moreMy A/C unit was running but the fan wasn't. I sent an e-mail through Angie's List at 11:00 pm and the next morning I got a call and an appointment the same day to evaluate the problem. Mike found a bad circuit board on the furnace. He rigged a by-pass on the system to allow the fan to run continually. He ordered a new circuit board while he was there to ensure he got the right thing. We then scheduled a service call at a later date to replace the bad board. He showed me how to turn the fan off and on manually when needed so I was comfortable until the service work could be completed. He returned today (May 9th) to finish the work. He completed the work quickly, and even left me a spare furnace filter so I know what size to order. The work was done to my complete satisfaction. Mike was very responsive and always was available or quickly returned any phone calls to set up appointments. I intend to continue to use this company in the future for annual preventive maintenance on my HVAC system.
Description of Work: Diagnosed a faulty circuit board in the furnace. The fan relay wasn't working. Provided a manual override to the relay so I could enjoy heat and A/C while waiting for the part to be received. Made a second call to replace the faulty circuit board with the new one. Replaced the air filter and provided a spare filter to me as backup and guideline for what size and type to use in the future.

 + -1 moreWe have used PHILADELPHIA GAS ELECTRIC HEATING & A/C a number of times over the past few years. Mike has always been extremely responsive, very professional and goes to great lengths to explain things. This last time we called him because the thermostat he installed for us a few years ago started acting wacky... resetting itself to a low temperature, displaying every character possible on the screen, displaying nothing at all on the screen. Mike came out the day after we called. He determined that the thermostat was defective and replaced it free of charge.

 + -1 moreMy Gas heater was not working. Mike told me over the phone that there was an $89.00 fee to diagnose the problem but that fee would go towards repair. After a thorough and lengthy examination he determined that the furnace needed replacement. I couldn't afford to pay for a replacement right now and asked him to do his best. He refused on the grounds that there was no way he could make the furnace operate safely but that I could call someone else who might do something for me. He recommended the best type of portable electric heaters to use until I could afford a new heater. He was very patient and thorough and explained to me how I actually needed a smaller furnace but better duct work for more efficient heating and gave me his estimate of the replacement costs for future reference. All that and he didn't charge me the $89.00 fee because he couldn't fix the problem right away. Gotta love this guy.
Description of Work: The blower on my gas furnace was blowing ina a sput-sput-sputter and blowing the pilot light out after about 15 minutes.

The repair was a bit tricky since the problem was multi-tiered. but they were able to diagnose, get parts and get everything installed and working by 2:00. Great job. Description of Work: Mike readjusted the pressure in my home heating system so that the radiators would heat the house more efficiently. Initially, the heater was at a third of the recommended water pressure. He also explained how to shut off water flow to my hot water heater and lower the temperature of the heater if this very old appliance were to break down. He explained the basis for selecting the size of the boiler, improvements in connecting hot and cold water intakes, and suggested an annual maintenance contract. As a home owner, this is all useful information for me.

 + 0 moreThey were very good. It took a little longer than expected. They had trouble getting the oil furnace out. The person they refereed me to, to remove the oil tank did a good job. They also advised me that it would be a good idea to change my water heater as well. I ended up have a high efficiency gas furnace and a high efficiency water heater installed. There was something wrong with the pump. I called on Christmas day and he answered. He came the next day and replaced it at no charge.
Description of Work: I hired this company to install a gas furnace. It was a change over from oil to gas.

 + -1 moreWe awoke in the morning to no heat. Had been meaning to join Angie's List, and since we now had need, we gave it a shot. Found Philadelphia Gas and Electric on the first search, and they offered a $30 coupon. We received several calls from Mike Toran who did his best to diagnose the problem over the phone. He had a service employee (Scott) to our place within about two hours, who diagnosed it as a much less expensive problem than originally thought. It turns out it was simply a bad ignitor, and Scott also went ahead and cleaned the burners and changed the filter, as we had never had the system cleaned before in the four years we've been in the home. Overall, it was a quick, professional, problem-free visit. We will use them again in the future.

 + 0 moreI will write back when the job is finished but Mike is very professional, did not try to sell me any thing I did not need, actually told me my old heating system was to big for my house. Sold me a smaller unit. Took plenty of time to check out the duct work and see where I was having the cold spots and why. Explained the technology of the energy efficient systems. I picked my own system, actually picking the more expensive one then he recommended. He was great about scheduling. I anticipate a smooth ride.
Description of Work: We haven't had the work done yet but we use Angie's list for everything. So knowing we needed a new heating/air-conditioning system and wanted to convert from oil to gas I looked at every vendor's info, website, awards, credentials and made a comparison until I found Philadelphia Gas & Electric Heating & A/C. My first inclination that I was probably going to use them was a great rating here and then and A+ with the BBB. I called and had a very pleasant exchange with a women who took my info. That very same day I was contacted by Mike Toran the owner, listened to what I told him I needed, told me he would be at my house during that same week and he was!!! He found my heater in what he called so dangerous that it shouldn't even be on. He promptly went to his truck, bringing back metal which he used to cover missing parts from the back of my heater that had disintegrated, saying even if I didn't hire him, he could never leave us with a furnace that was a death trap. Checked to make sure I had a carbon monoxide alarm (I do) as the furnace was leaking in small traces. He covered up the the parts of the heater that my former oil/heating provider failed to take care of and said crack open your windows to be safe. He said please don't use this heater. I hired him!

After a very brief look he said it needed to be replaced. Both the unit itself and the fan on the deck. He did some research and came up with an $8,800 quote for a new system. I called a competitor who came the next morning...noticed the leak was due to the drain pan - he replaced it and all is well. $65 charge. That's the short version...

Gas Electric just before 10 am and they responded and fixed the problem by 12:30 that afternoon. Great service, great job, very pleasant, professional and knowledgeable.  + 0 moreOverall I am extremely pleased with the service. The pump seems to work, and Mike was quick and efficient (though of course it wasn't a very difficult job). He even mounted an electrical outlet on the furnace to power the pump and routed it to the on/off switch of the furnace. Two minor complaints: First, both times Mike came over, he was about an hour later than he said he was going to be, even though he had already called to confirm the time earlier that day. Second, I was charged an extra $200 for the electrical work. This work was not factored into the original estimate. The work itself is appreciated, since it's the technically "correct" way to do it, however, neither I nor my girlfriend (who was home while the work was being performed) was consulted prior to it being done. The $700 was a surprise for me when I got home, since the estimate was $485 plus tax.

 + -1 moreOn December 19th (the first snow storm of the 2009/2010 winter season) I woke up to a nonfunctioning gas heater. The service company that installed the heater came out and gave me an astronomical price for repairs and/or replacement while stating that they would not be able to do the repairs until Monday. I decided to place a call through Angie's Listing to Philadelphia Electric & Gas. Although we were having a serious snowstorm, Michael returned my call and walked me through several possibilities to see if he could get it working over the telephone. Michael came out first thing Monday morning and got me up and running. Michael never said to me that it would be X$ for him to come out. He tried to see that I got some sort of action out of my furnace for we were after all in the midst of a snowstorm when my heater died. Michael saved me over $400 from what was previously quoted, but above all his sincere concern about my well-being scored serious points for him to provide service for my HVAC from here on.
Description of Work: Michael came out to my home first thing Monday morning (12/21/09) and ran a diagnostic on my heater in my presence. He determined that it was the motor, called to see if one was in stock, gave me a price that included parts and labor with an estimated time of completion. Went and picked up the part, came back and installed the part. He tested it more than once and advised me of what to do in the future to avoid this problem. The final price was what was quoted and I was up and running in no time.

They didn't do a lot of work but the guy that came out took his time to explain things as what he was doing and how to keep everything running properly. I had a problem with my chimney and they recommended a chimney inspector who came and checked it for free.
Description of Work: Philadelphia Gas Electric Heating & A/C replaced thermocouple on a boiler and came back a couple of weeks later to trouble shoot another problem.

 + -1 moreMike was very thorough in trying several fixes and when they didn't work explaining in detail why not and providing justification for a complete system replacement. He didn't try to upsell in fact advised against a more expensive more energy efficient unit because the costs didn't justify the level of added efficiency. The workers who came to install the system were on time, polite and professional. They did a good job although I deducted a little from the quality score because I felt the tin work could have been a little more precise with less tape sealing it up, and the thermostat was hung crooked. But the system works great and I would use them again.
