They arrived as scheduled and got right to work. There was some discussion about the best way to tie into the existing patio and then the old slate that was to be replaced was removed and cut where necessary. The base was dug and prepped and the cement was poured. They tinted the cement and did a very artistic job with the lines that were added in, giving the cement a slate-like look. It's quite dark on installation but fades over time and will match the slate fairly well. I know this because they poured a walkway for us a few years ago that has weathered nicely with a very natural look. Afterwards they did a nice job cleaning up the work area.
Description of Work: My second time hiring Paul's Cement... great work pouring a pad in front of our patio door that tied in nicely with the existing slate patio. We had had problems with the slate heaving in the winter and being hard to keep clear after snow/ice storms. They also did a nice job spreading some red stone chips to two areas along the front edge of our house.

He was very prompt and very courteous. He was quick and timely. I can't tell you about the quality because cement takes long time to dry.

Based on this experience, I would not recommend Paul and I would not try calling him again.
Description of Work: I called Paul's cement work to get an estimate to have my sidewalk repaired. He answered the phone and we discussed the job. Paul said he would be out that afternoon to look at it. He never showed up. I called the next day to ask what happened. He said his son got held up in the rain and would be out to look at the sidewalk. (First of all, I was expecting Paul, not his son.) Regardless, his son never showed up the next day either and I never heard from Paul.

Seems that there were a couple of 'misunderstandings' that lead to 2 of the 3 jobs that we hired him for being incomplete and ultimately more expensive than originally promised. For example he thought thought we wanted ~80% of my patio cemented. Of course, I should have gotten a written bid before the work started. However, reading other reviewers comments, it seems that others have had similar experiences and that he will try to squeeze a little more out of the unwary. Also, don't expect him to return calls after the money is out of your hands.

They were very efficient about it but I didn't use them. There was one part of the job that he told me to do myself, and maybe that would have made sense to somebody who wanted to do it himself, but that was not why I was hiring him. It was a positive and negative for me because I wanted the whole job done but he only gave me an estimate for part of the job and not the whole job. I would say that they were reliable judging by the way they presented themselves. I may probably have got an estimate from them for the whole job if I had pushed it but I was taken aback by the way it played out. I ended up hiring someone else and had the whole thing done at a higher price. The estimate was timely, professional and solid through. The price that he quoted was very fair.
Description of Work: Paul's Cement Work gave us an estimate for scraping and cementing the front of my basement. We thought that we had a little seepage through the front of the foundation. We also have a flower bed outside that was open at the bottom, and water was going down through that flower bed into the foundation whenever we watered anything. He recommended that I do the flower bed work myself.

I called Paul on Monday, Oct. 3rd, 2011 to request an estimate. Paul, who was on a jobsite close to my home, immediately went over to survey my property's sidewalk's condition. In a few hours, he already had an estimate of $2300 for me. The following day, he called back and offered $200 off his estimate, to which I agreed. He offered to come to fix my sidewalk and steps on Thursday. Paul, his son, and his crew arrived early on Thursday morning as planned, and immediately got to work. They required little input from me except for an initial confirmation of what was to be done. I spent several hours doing my own thing as they worked steadily outside. The job was complete by 3PM. They left some barricades and yellow caution tape around the wet cement to discourage pedestrians.

The job turned out well. They were not the best as at this time there is some spider web cracking on the job. He also repaired a side of the mortar that was coming out. He is very busy and so you don't get him right away. If you want to hire him you would have to call him back again and ask for him because for most part he is worth it. The price is good. He just comes on time.

My experience was pretty good. It was my second estimate from a contractor that I got From Angie's List. I liked the guy because he actually grew up in the neighborhood. He was able to show me some of the work that he did in the neighborhood. I asked him to come with an estimate. I did like the price. It was a good price. He actually came over twice afterwards and he should be starting next week. I was not really happy with the first contractor that I got from Angie’s List.

It went well from start to finish, and a follow-up for repair was answered promptly.
Description of Work: Paul rebuilt the walls of my basement in my 110-year-old row house. He was very easy to work with, came and gave an estimate as soon as I called. . When I said that I had to clear out the basement before the work could start, , he said they would neatly pile everything in the center for me. And they did. They were very prompt and courteous, and good about cleaning up after their work. 16 months later, when I noticed that the coating was pulling off from the wall in a few places, I called. He had a crew there the next day to fix it.

I was very pleased with Paul. I had a very hard time getting people to show up first of all to give an estimate they would never show up..but i did get a couple. Paul came ontime and during the work he did if he could not be there at a certain time he would always call..which hardly many contractors give you that consideration. He was very warm and also professional and the work was done in a couple days. My only negative was that the person(s) taking down my wall..might not have used a proper saw as my neighbor next door had a complaint about part of his wall having cracks. But it was a tough job to get down.. I would Paul again as i think he did a great job with no problems and courteous service as well.

It?s a family owned company and that?s another good thing. They were great both the times. They did a good job. They were very quick in coming and giving me the estimate. They were very quick in getting the job done after that. Their price was reasonable. They came out to do a property which I have in common with my neighbors. They were the ones we chose over others as their price was reasonable. I wanted to do a repair differently and they suggested not doing that and that was nice. He pointed that it wouldn?t look good. I really appreciate what they suggested. I would recommend them. I would call them again to do the courtyard and the basement work. Other companies who contacted me were not very organized and clean. I would use them in the future.

My one complaint is that they didn't have somebody to refer me to for replacing the sidewalk after they pulled it up. He came out after my plumber did. He gave me a $50 discount. He is a very good craftsman. He really knows the math side of his business. He really knows what he's doing when it comes to cement work. He came out right before Christmas, which is a difficult time to find people to do work. He did a couple of additional things. There was a step that was knocked loose from the jackhammering, and he agreed to fix it. I didn't get estimates from anybody else. I had to work with him a bit on some things. We had to come up with a good solution on some work that he didn't want to do in brick. He was very responsive.

They also did some patch work on my steps. Not the best job but it didn't cost me anything either.
Description of Work: Carl's team brick pointed the front of my house. It was power washed and then pointed. Since my house is over 100+, I did not want to acid wash the brick. I like the old dirty look, but wanted it cleaned up. They did a great job on the bricks and the around the windows.

Great! Very prompt, hard-working team (I believe mostly family...sons). Polite and cleaned up afterwards, removed any waste. Definately a positive experience....the columns that greet you on our porch are no longer an eye sore...great work!
Description of Work: Cement 4 front porch pillars. Pillars had paint peeling from them. Cement was underneath. Paul's team scrubbed with course brushes to get all loose paint off the columns. Did a great job prepping. Meticulous job with covering the columns with cement. It's been a year since it was done and is still in great condition!
