They received full payment and did half the job!
Description of Work: Stone pointing work for my parents home, front and back. They completed the front and not the back. Said they wanted my parents to pay again for the half they didn't complete. Which is "CLEARLY" in the original contract.

At the time of the repairs, I was disappointed that the repair and pointing were somewhat clumsy and obvious looking. I was assured at the time by one of the workers that, " We are professionals" and that the work was as it should be. Now nearly 3 years later, the repaired areas are crumbling and will need to be redone completely, in addition to their being aesthetically unacceptable. This was a very high price for the work done. Initially, it didn't really look great. Retrospectively however, it hasn't been durable or effective. I would caution against using this provider.
Description of Work: He performed the agreed-upon spot pointing, and concrete repairs to basement exterior stairwell and back steps.

Description of Work: Stucco. I had two independent stucco inspector's come out to view his work after he said the job was completed. Both reports indicated his total incompetence. In fact they recorded in their reports that the stucco would not stay on the wall very long. The job was simply not done properly. I guess the contractor was trying to save himself some money so he only installed wire, as he said, "where necessary". According to my inspectors the whole job should have been wired and framed with weep screening installed to allow for proper water drainage. I'm sure this contractor thought I would never be the wiser. However, my invisible eye, also know as my security cameras, recored everything he did, so he was not able to lie about it. In all fairness to this contractor I must say that he offered to add another coat of stucco over the existing stucco that he had already bothched up. However, my inspector's made it clear to me that this would be a waste of time and money. The work was just that bad!! I don't think this guy has ever done a stucco job before this. Now I need to have his work completely removed. The cost to have it removed and redone is enormous. I asked for my money back. So far I have not received it. I'm considering legal action. Look! I'm sure this guy does something well, it's just NOT stucco!!! | | | |

Otto's brick company was stone pointing in my neighborhood. The quality of their work looked great. I contacted them and they surveyed my house and provided and estimate in 2 days. They started on time and completed in a reasonable time frame. With weather changing they came on Saturday and Sunday to complete their work. I am absolutely satisfied with their work, professionalism and price. I would recommend Otto's Brick and Stone Pointing to anyone who wants a quality job without any worries or hassles.

Otto's Brick And Stone Pointing did a pretty good job. I think they did an overall good job. What he did, he did in cold weather and it shouldn't particularly done it in cold weather. I have a few concerns, but I am going to call him back out about it. He more or less did what he said he was going to do. It wasn't his fault that it was done in the cold weather, that was mine.

The project involved the whole back of our rowhome. The whole back was was prepped and then painted with 2 coats of elastometeric paint (back of house had stucco, siding), 4 windows were caulked, brick edging along walkway was repointed and finished, gutter reattached to house. From start to finish, John Otto was onsite assisting with the work and making sure everything was done to standard. Once started, the job only took two days. John was on time each day and kept in constant contact throughout the process (we had to wait for the right weather to start). Cleanup was done thoroughly and my husband and I were very pleased. He did a great job for what we felt was a very reasonable price. We will definitely keep his information for future use.

I called three brick pointers for estimates and they all came in roughly the same and all said about the same thing in terms of the work that needed to be done but John Otto was the only one who could start within the week. He was very quick to return my call about the initial estimate and spent a good deal of time going over the work needed and giving me a run down of his experience. I had high hopes for the success of the job, but I was unfortunately very disappointed. He told me he wanted to start at 7 so I got up early to wait, at 9:18 when he finally showed up I was a little peeved. No courtesy call to let me know he would be late which would have been fine had I known. I have a contract that he wrote up outlining the work, but the finished job falls far short of that. The problem is a leak around a couple of windows which he said he would recaulk in addition to some spot pointing. He told me it might take more than one day to do the job, and then was finished in four hours. I thought and quot;wowand quot; until I went to inspect the work. The work is sloppy, the caulk lines are the most uneven I have ever seen, and the job overall incomplete as I still have most of the same leak issues. The chimney is recapped with a piece of some sort of tile that has odd hinge joints on it and a huge crack which he caulk repaired - did he trashpick it? - instead of the slate he wrote up in the contract. Perhaps he didn't think I would climb up to inspect the work? Largely the brick pointing is sloppy and not the ground out neat joints he promised, in addition there are several places he simply missed. We're talking about an area maybe 10 X 20 feet, not a whole wall. They also left debris in the yard and didn't move the heavy potted plants back like they said they would, one of which was knocked over and broke. This wasn't a big deal but just added insult to injury. When I called him to ask if he could come back to redo since I still had the leak I left a voicemail and it took him 4 days to get back to me. I had a friend call him on the second day to see if he would call him back and he also left a message but Otto got back to him within an hour. Otto finally came back and resealed some places with caulk, very sloppily again and not only left his broken caulk gun in the yard but also left the security gate wide open which we had gone over must be shut when he left. Again this is a small thing but when added to the overall experience just makes it all worse. I just feel he rushed through the job and did it badly, perhaps thinking since it's the back of the house it wouldn't matter? Perhaps thinking since I'm a woman I wouldn't know the difference? Speculation aside I would never recommend this contractor. I stopped short of giving an and quot;Fand quot; grade because he did do something and while I still have the leak it isn't as bad as it was, however I still have to get someone else out here to fix what he charged me to fix and then did not do. I gave him a and quot;band quot; on price because although it was the same price others had given I don't think he did the work promised in the contract. The price for what he did do should have been much lower.
Description of Work: Contract stated: Spot brick pointing in the back of the rowhouse. Caulking of outside of windows, and large crack in brick where addition was added in the sixties. Capping chimney with slate tile.

I had a truly strange experience with this contractor. I called to set up some estimates. At first i was overwhelmed by the responsiveness of this contractor -- he even went to the house without setting up an appointment to provide an estimate before speaking to me. But when he went to the house he didn't know that I was just concerned with one small area that was hard to see from the street. With the high cost of masonry work, I wasn't looking to repoint the entire house, which is what he was encouraging me to do. We set up an appointment to go over the estimate and the work while I was at the house and he never showed up! He never even returned my calls with an apology or an excuse. He essentially just dropped off the face of the earth. Maybe it was an off weekend but I can't recommend using him based on my experiences.

Response from Ottos Brick And Stone Pointing llc
Member did call me for an estimate which she had originally called for brick pointing and was not clear on her intentions. She is an out of state landlord and told me that i could go by the property and take a look at it. So i did. I called her and told her her pointing was fine. She then told me that what she really wanted was to get the side of her garage restucco or dryvit or thorolastic paint. She told me she was meeting two contractors on sat and two other on sunday. I showed up sat at 8:00am as we agreed and called her but no answer. I waited for an hour then left and called her letting her know i was leaving. She called me later on that evening as asked me if i had come by the house and that she wasnt sure of what day we were supposed to meet. I told her it was today at 8am but she thought it was sunday. I told her i couldnt come out sunday because i was working and didnt have time. I have 4children and work pretty much 7 days a week. So i dont waste any time because all my extra time i spend with my girls. After that i wasnt interested in the job. That was over two months ago. She still hasnt gotten the work done because i was at her next door neighbor's house three days ago (The Wannamakers) because i am doing work there next week, after christmas. So now she wants to leave a message on Angies list day before christmas. Gimme a break. You told me you had four other contractors looking at the job. Obviously that was a lie. You forgot the appointment not me. Sorry i couldnt help you.

What a great experience! When we found evidence of water leaking under our bedroom window, I called John Otto located in Philadelphia. I left a message and heard back from him quickly. He was at our house within 45 minutes to assess the situation. He told us that a minor repair would solve the problem. The repair was done within days before the next rain. It was obvious that John Otto takes pride in his commitment to the quality of his work and the timeliness of his service. A's all around for John Otto. We recommend him without reservation.

The day they came out it was to rain and thunder later in day --- they started the work and it started to rain mid morning I asked if they would be stopping and since it was a covered porch they stayed and finished the job all in one day through the rain and thunder. They were punctual and cleaned up after themselves. He even came the next day to spot paint my railing which had some paint removed accidentally while they were working. I was very pleased with services and quality.

Very professional. John was very responsive, showed up when he said he would. Explained in detail what he would do, how long it would take and how much it would cost and most importantly followed through with what he said. I would definitely use him again!

We had requested estimates from five masons. Two of them had to be called twice to even get a response before they would come out or, worst case, did a drive by. Two of the five rejected the job as too difficult, two had extraordinarily high estimates and John was the best in all areas. He responded to the initial phone call, came out to the house soon afterward and fully explained what he would need to do in order to complete the job. He was delayed by rain initially, but kept in touch to let us know when he'd be able to work. He and his crew worked when promised, did an excellent job of matching grout, cleaned up the work area and yard when finished and were respectful and friendly throughout the process.
Description of Work: We had three chimneys pointed and a section of deteriorated brick repaired and pointed. This was particularly difficult as the house is three stories, is surrounded by trees and porches and is a 250 year old historic home.
