Mr. Contractor's work was instrumental in maximizing the value of the house my wife and I sold in Fishtown, so when we moved into our new forever home and decided the kitchen needed to be redone, we immediately called them back. We were not disappointed, they responded well to the ideas that we had then brought their experience to the table to fill in the gaps for what we had not considered.. They even suggested the best, and most affordable, contractors for services they do not provide, like counter tops and tricky plumbing work. We've used them three times already and have every intention of bringing them back for future projects!

First let me say that I wish I was better prepared for a renovation of this size. It took almost three and a half weeks and cost a lot more than I had hoped. But you never know what you will find when you have a older house. But as for the workers themselves I was very pleased with how well they worked. It started with Steve the front man. He is very polite and knowledgeable and helped me chose tile and flooring .He explained when problems came up and the budget had to be adjusted. He also kept both me and the workers on the same page when any issues came up. Everyone was kind and professional and went above and beyond . If I wanted something changed or didn’t know something they would explain. Even Jenny in the office helped me feel cared for. Living through a renovation is rough. Delays and bad weather and unexpected expense can be discouraging. But the people at Mr. Contractor realy want you to be 100% happy when they are done. I don’t want to do any other renovation for a long time but when I get some more money and nerve, I will call Steve.

I am happy to write this review of Mr. Contractor and my renovation experience with Ken Spector. For the project with Mr. Contractor I did the design and technical drawings (framing, electrical, HVAC, trim and final detail) for an upper story, 1350 sq. ft. renovation of a condo in a historic high rise in downtown Philadelphia. The initial building dates back to 1910 and the unit had undergone (at least) one major renovation without permit. Demolition for the condo was back to the brick and involved the removal of 40,000 lbs of material. The ceiling and part of the structural floor were replaced. All plumbing drain and supply lines were relocated and replaced back to the waste/vent stack, most interior walls were replaced, electrical was rewired back to a new distribution box. All floors, trim, doors, cabinets, fixtures, and appliances were replaced. The construction took 9 months. Per square foot, this type of renovation is arguably the most difficult one can undertake. The condo renovation project with Mr. Contractor was more challenging, for example, than the design and construction of my custom home. There are two main points I would make about my experience. The first is the level of customization that Mr. Contractor was able to provide and the second is the reliability. On the first point, there were multiple aspects to the design and construction that had either rarely, or never, been incorporated into a project in the more than 30 years of experience possessed by multiple craftsman working for Mr. Contractor. A couple of examples include the use of clipped outside wall corners and elliptical transom stained glass inserts above the doors. Mr. Contractor was able to address the structural metal stud framing of the clipped corners so that they provided as much strength as traditionally framed corners. The stained glass inserts required Mr. Contractor work with specialized customer materials and dimensions and incorporate these into the construction. There are many other examples from this project including illuminated wall niches, 6’ wide granite window sills, multipart dentil molding trim, arched ceilings, pilasters with plinth blocks, customer provided column wraps with marble inserts, a zero curb ADA transfer shower, a 5’ long linear floor drain, floor to 9’ ceiling kitchen cabinets, and replacing structural flooring in a historic high rise. With respect to reliability I can also mention two examples. First, Mr. Contractor is a medium size family business based in Philly for 4 generations. The challenges of the work required that Mr. Spector draw from multiple trades and the skill sets of various craftsman. He coordinated electrical, plumbing, HVAC, framing, drywall, paint, trim, appliances … everything. Whenever he needed to bring in new craftsmen or trade to the job site he was able to draw on the collective expertise of his employees at Mr. Contract and his depth of contacts across the trades in Philly to get the job done. My final point addresses the obvious for a job like this; building code compliance and structural issues due to the 100+ year age of the building. Ken Spector took the responsibility to work with HOA / management to ensure the job was completed. He was able to work through the challenges to obtain compliance for waste/vent stacks, ceiling structure, mechanical exhaust, and the failure of a structural floor between I-Beam spans on our upper floor in the high-rise. All of the work done my Mr. Contractor was permitted with the city and inspected to meet code. I consider myself very fortunate to have in Mr. Contractor the level of integrity to stick with a job, keep it on target in the face of obstacles that would turn most into vapor If you have job in Philly, no matter how challenging, how old/historic the building, or how much customization you want, give Mr. Contractor a call to get the work done. Overall Grade of A! PS: Pictures are examples of scope of work for this job: plans, demolition, framing, plumbing, tile, and a few shots of finish product,

Barry, from Mr. Contractor, examined the damage and repair and he told me he could provide me with the support I wanted, which was an adjustable jack. On the date we determined, the two workers who were assigned were here (7:45 AM), and the work was done not more than 30 minutes later. I feel a great relief from the completion of the task and I am very happy with the nice appearance of the work. (And unexpectedly, with the color of the jack sleeve; it matches the red paint a former owner used to spruce up some of the basement fittings a while back! ) Many thanks for a nice job well done, guys!
Description of Work: There was a cracked joist that had been sistered, but I wanted an upright support at the spot, which was in the middle of the basement.

Mr. Contractor walked us through the process and helped us design our kitchen using various local vendors. Ken was our contact and was available to us when we needed assistance. Steve showed up on time for estimate and always responded in a timely manner. We had water in our basement and needed to have all new drywall, studs and flooring put in and had lighting installed as well. Crew showed up when they said they would each day and job was started and completed on time. Work looks great and would use them again and plan to for some other small work needed around the house.

Nice to know you can count on someone's word. Kenny responded immediately (from his vacation) and put me in touch with his office. The new window was ordered and I was told it would take about 2 weeks. Since I was headed on vacation after those 2 weeks I said I'd call in on my return. When I checked in after I got back we set a time for the installation. Could not have gone better. Thank you Kenny and Rob for making this so easy and honoring your word.
Description of Work: Early in 2013 I had multiple renovations by Mr. Contractor, including replacing a wall of windows. Concerned about the broken thermal seals of the prior windows I asked owner Kenny Spector what if it happened with any of the new windows. Kenny said I would have a lifetime guarantee and he'd replace his window if it happened. The week before this Thanksgiving I noticed condensation in one window - a broken thermal seal. I sent a text to Kenny with a picture of the problem window.

It went well beyond my expectations. I was referred to Mr.Contractor From and supplier in Newton due to them being to busy. Steve came out on time, very informative as to how the whole process will be done. The date they gave me to start was the day the were here, no excuses like contractors i have used in the past. The crew is amazing. Jimmy and dave installed cleaned up and added a couple trim pieces which were unforseen due to the new door setup. They did it at no charge. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THEM AND REQUEST STEVE FOR YOUR ESTIMATE

Ken, Rob and Alex were great. everything we asked for they did. The demo work was done with in a few days and all the old debris was cleared off the property promptly. The new wall a window and some additional patch work to the old brick wall which was missing a few bricks and needed some pointing was done nicely before the siding was completed. A new rear door and a deck and awning were installed. The work turned out perfect. We are extremely happy with the work they did and at the speed they completed the job.

There were a few hi-cups. There was a delay to the start of the project because the carpenter got injured. Then I had a vacation planned. It took me a lot longer than I had anticipated to clear out the kitchen, so it worked out. Once they were able to start, the workman showed up on time and started the work. The project took 3 weeks to complete. There was a one week delay because the sink I wanted installed was on back order. There were a few minor issues that came up during the project, but they were quickly resolved. I was very pleased with the overall results and am enjoying my new kitchen. Mr. Contractor was able to get the job done and within budget.
Description of Work: Kitchen Remodeling. I had a very old kitchen that needed to be upgraded. I basically had a drain board sink with a metal cabinet above with no countertops to work with. The job involved removing the old drain board sink and metal cabinets, removing the old stove, installing 3 GFI outlets, recessed lighting, plumbing - for the new sink, adjusting gas line so stove could be located on the wall, to make room for an L shaped kitchen. The job also included installing new dry wall, carpentry for installation of the new cabinets, new basement door. New flooring was also installed.

Mr. Contactor, Barry, visited, looked the repair over and declared it was sound as it is. He told me I could add the support but his estimation was it was not really needed. He did quote a price for the work-- $800.00 and recommended keeping an eye out for any change. I have decided this is a repair that can wait until some pressing issues are resolved. I am grateful for Mr. C's advisement, which came free!

Couldn't have been better. They came out to go over the details on how we wanted it to look and sketched it out for us. They arrived at the designated date and completed the build out in a day and painted it the next. They are great to work with, very professional and always on time, and their end results are always exactly as discussed. As a Realtor in Philly, I have recommended Mr. Contractor to many of clients. They have used them for small projects to large. My clients moving from California have used them to rehab their entire Rittenhouse Square condo from floor to ceiling and they are thrilled by the results. Another client from NYC had them remodel their bathroom and kitchen in their new condo. We couldn't ask for more from a contractor and recommend them highly.
Description of Work: I have used the services of Mr. Contractor several times on our current home and our our past homes. I wanted a built-in bookcase to be built in our dining room on the wall shared with the kitchen. I have used them prior at out home to build a large gas burning fireplace and mantle and that project turned out amazing!

Our old exterior doors were from the 1950s, at best. (When were jalousie doors popular?) The doors were falling apart, and the door frames were rotten. So we called Mr. Contractor. Lonnie came promptly. I asked for a door that we could see who was outside, and he agreed. He quoted about $3000, which seemed high, but we figured the door frames were included. The service was fast. The workers were professional. I suppose I could see someone at the door, if he/she was 7.5 feet or taller, and tried to look in the door's window. I was very disappointed they didn't give us door frames too, but then again, I never specifically asked for them. I just figured no one could put a door up on rotten frames. I was wrong. I asked about the mail slot for the front door. (We live in South Philly, so no place for a mail box.) I had to call Lonnie back for that, but he did send someone out to cut one in. Again, workers were nice and professional. The doors sure seemed like interior doors, but I figure he's the expert. I'm not. A year later, the door handle bulged out. (Photos included. That's not a shadow under the door handle. Oh, and the gold trim was painted by friends. That didn't come with the door.) Two years later -- last summer -- the rain and heat swelled the front door enough that we were stuck in the house. I called the business and the woman answering the phones told me he wouldn't be in South Philly until Tuesday or Wednesday. (I called on a Thursday.) She suggested we call the police to open the door, but I kept thinking, "What will they do, except break the door open?" And then what? Anyone can just walk into our house?" I told her I'd wait. Wednesday afternoon, I called back to ask when he's coming. She said she never promised he would come. Why would I assume he wouldn't come when he could? He did come late that afternoon, but he was angry at both her and me for the inconvenience. Having been unable to open the door for six days, I invited him to open it. My luck. He could. (It hadn't rained for several days by then.) So to "fix" it, he got out his screwdriver to check the screws near the hinges. They were tight. He rubbed a little sand paper against our rotting frame, but it wasn't rotting there, so nothing happened. Case close. Nothing he could do. We used oil on the door, so we could get out until the weather cooled. The weather is heating up again, and hard to open and close the door again. Now the door is cracking all over. (Photos included.) All around the hand-cut mail slot. The door itself. Along the brass sweep at the bottom of the door, (if that is brass. Probably not.) Our frame was rotten. In a mere three years, the door matches the frame. He did give us cheap interior doors. He did rip us off. I would hire a feral dog before I'd hire this flim-flam outfit again. Run! Don't walk away. Yeah, it looks okay when you first get the work done, (less than you expected, but okay), but time tells quickly how bad they are.

For example, Steve Spector suggested that we use a public adjuster to deal with our insurance claim since the adjuster sent by the insurance did not cover nearly enough of the damages. We got a LOT more money from the insurance company due to using the public adjuster.
Description of Work: Wide variety of improvements including patching holes from electrical work, replacing medicine cabinet, replacing outside door, replacing leaky faucet, painting a wall and ceiling. Also smaller items like adding a shelf and hooks to a closet, adding a deadbolt to a door. Also repaired wall and ceiling due to some water damage.

I am very pleased with all aspects of the work performed. Everyone I worked with was punctual, friendly, and the final product is exactly what I asked for. The company was patient with me as we worked through zoning issues and bent over backwards to accommodate my project's needs, using exactly the materials I requested even though it was not originally in our contract. I have used Mr. Contractor for a prior estimate that I did not end up going through w/ for budget reasons and they were courteous to work with then as well. I hope to have the crew back again to do future work, as I have worked w/ many different contractors in this city at this point and the professionalism Mr. Contractor and in particular Barry showed was exemplary. The end product is incredibly sturdy and looks great!
Description of Work: Mr. Contractor demolished an old cinderblock wall in my backyard and put up new fence posts; they also arranged for the design of and constructed a 2nd-floor rear deck/balcony.

Lonnie and his crew showed up when they said they would. So far the problem seems to be fixed.
Description of Work: New siding was installed and windows were recapped to hopefully fix a leak that has been plaguing me since 2007, and no other contractor has been able to successful fix. Fingers crossed that Mr. Contractor figured it out!
