I own a house in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. After a few years of ownership and no leaks we decided it would be a good idea to have a new roof installed as preventative maintenance. We got several quotes Henkel was not the cheapest but were local and included things others did not. The roof was done and all looked good. After about 3 months a spot appeared in the ceiling of the master bedroom. My wife called and Joe Henkel said “we don’t chase leaks”. But eventually he did send someone out to check. I received an email stating that my chimney was dilapidated and needed to be replaced. Keep in mind the roof never leaked until after the new roof was installed. I had the chimney repaired and the leak continued. I sent an email showing pictures of the repairs and of the roof. He finally agreed to meet me at the house to investigate. He never showed up and when I called the office at 3:20 PM it was closed. I later found out he put a new roof on at my church to the sum of $40,000 which immediately leaked as well. This guy is bad news.

We had a few roof leaks at our house, and we ended up getting 5 quotes. All roofers, including henkel stated that the roof was at the end of its useful life. 2 most expensive roofers in area gave high quotes, and wouldn't repair the roof. Henkel and the other roofers in the area agreed that the roof was at the end of its life, however, it was not in terrible condition and they quoted to both repair and replace the roof. The other 3 quotes were within 5% to both repair the roof and replace the roof, so I would conclude that Henkel's prices are perfectly reasonable. In comparing the 3 similar quotes, Paul answered several of my questions both through email and through a phone call. I ended up picking Henkel Roofing to repair our main flat roof, and a smaller shared porch flat roof at our house. They emailed me the following Wednesday, stating that if the weather was clear, they would perform the work Thursday. They informed me on thursday and friday, that due to weather they would have to postpone. Not hearing otherwise, we went away on Saturday, and they performed the repairs on Saturday, which was the first clear weather day, which would have been great had I been home. They talked to our neighbor, who told them about our leaks, and they performed the repairs. When we got home Saturday night, we noticed that on the small flat roof that some repairs were made, but not over where one of the leaks was. On Monday, I emailed Henkel that they missed a trouble area, and that had we been informed, we would have been home to direct the roofers. On Tuesday morning, a roof crew was at our house, and repaired the trouble areas, even a trouble area on our neighbors portion of the shared roof (with permission) no questions asked. After all the repairs, after 2 days of rain, I can say we are leak free. So overall, although their communication could have been better, they repaired our roof, for the reasonable price quoted, and when I asked them to come back, they did it no questions asked. They answered all my questions, and for a small job ($900) they didn't require payment until the work was performed. I would definitely call them again.

THIS PLACE IS A TOTAL SCAM DO NOT CALL THEM. My husband and I bought our house in manayunk two years ago. Our roof is three years old but seemed to develop a small leak where the chimney was. We had one guy come out before Henkel who stated that our roof looked great but did have a small crack where the chimney was. He quoted us $350 to fix it. We got another estimate from Henkel. The Henkel employees said the same thing As the first guy- roof was in good condition but there was some leaks around the chimney. We also did not tell Henkel employees what the first company said and quoted us. Henkel Gave us an estimate a day later for $5800- stating that we needed a whole new roof. Please remember that when we bought our house two years ago our inspector confirmed our roof was new and in good condition, the first guy who came Our said the same thing, as did henkels own employees! But for some reason the owner decided to take advantage of the situation and lied saying we needed a new roof and asked for thousands of dollars. We decided to get one more estimate from another company- the leak cost us $150 to fix and guess what??!! He also confirmed we didn't need a new roof! COMPANY IS A SCAM AND LIERS PLEASE DO NOT CALL THEM AND GET ANOTHER ESTIMATE.

BUYER BEWARE. They apparently don’t honor their warranty. Their failure to fix the leak is causing additional damage to my home that I will need to repair in the interior.
Description of Work: We had our roof repaired- then called because it leaked. They have either not answered my calls, not called me back, and given me the run around. My roof is still under warranty and they have not fixed it and the leak is causing extensive interior wall damage.

The good: Professional and capable workers. Happy with the work they did, cleanup, etc. No complaints with the final product. We got three bids and Henkel was in the middle for price, but their work had been praised by friends who had used them. The bad: After removing 2/3 of the old roof down to bare wood, we were told we needed to call the company owner. He tells us that we need to put down all new plywood decking at the cost quoted in the proposal for decking repairs - $3/sq ft, or $3,000 for the entire roof. Owner tells us that they will either walk off the job or will not warranty the roof if we do not agree to this. We had a bad feeling about the way this was presented, sp we pushed back. Asked why this possibility didn't come up earlier, or why a line item wasn't included in the bid (our roof/house was very typical in design and condition for the area), and whether this is truly necessary. Explain we feel like we are possibly being taken for a ride. Owner gets angry that we are questioning his integrity, yells at my wife, hangs up. Will not answer phone when we try to call back - multiple times. Discuss issue with crew foreman and ask if plywood is really needed- that we want a good quality roof, but had some sticker shock at the sudden cost increase and sales pressure. Foreman says it actually isn't necessary, that most of the decking is fine and that he can/will install roof with only limited repairs to a few areas. Points out problem spots (all look legit). Assures us that roof will be fine and Henkel will issue warranty (which they did). Pleased with final product. Appreciated efforts of roofers who did the work. Unlikely to use Henkel again (unless roof leaks under warranty), and would recommend only with caution.

This STELLAR roofing company re-shingled all of my pent roofs, small side porch roof (which needed much attention-rotten wood, etc.) and because we were constantly experiencing a leak in a kitchen roof that has a sky-light, Henkel ripped it down to bare bones and reworked, re-shingled and re-flashed. All this rain we've been having of late? NOT one leak. Honestly, Paul Henkel (a nephew of the owner) came out and headed up his crew. Everyone was so professional, was ALWAYS on time, was kind to my two dogs, made SURE that all the old roofing nails were picked up.... I can't say enough good things about this fabulous, hard-working company. Let's face it, roofing in 90+degree weather is a real, you know what, and never, never did the crew complain. They always treated me with respect, and ergo, I did my best to treat them likewise (as we all should). I was very, very happy with the workmanship, the little extras, the kindness. If you're on the Mainline or in the South Philly area, you're losing out if you don't have Henkel Roofing come out to your job to give you an estimate. I'm very, very impressed, and my husband and I are beyond happy at the scope of their work. I'm so very grateful I contracted with them.
Description of Work: Replaced and re-shingled all overhangs, pent roofs, completely re-worked porch roof and stripped down a small kitchen roof that has a skylight that leaked. This is a very LARGE home with 3 stories.

The roofer, Hank, was very nice and professional. There were things that he did that were not on the estimate but he considered just part of the job. I have 2 neighbors that will be using him as well. I am very pleased with his work.
Description of Work: I hired Henkel Roofing to install a new slate roof and also some additional work. He found that the bricks supporting either side of the roof had lost their mortar over the years. So Hank advised we stuccoed them in place to stabilize. He used copper where all slate tiles meet the dormer windows. The original roof had a daisy on the roof that had been painted. He isn't a painter, but he had 6 rust color tiles that he used them to create the flower effect.

I had an estimate scheduled at 10 AM. The roofer arrived early before I had returned home, rang the bell and left, even though there is a note on our door saying to please call if we don't answer the door, (our doorbell isn't reliable). I got home at 9:55 and proceeded to wait. When no one showed up by 10:30, I called the office and was rudely told that he had been there and wouldn't come out again. The person on the phone was entirely rude, completely not interested in finding a solution to the situation. Henkel came highly recommended by a friend, but now that I see the reviews on Angie's List, and based on my small unsatisfactory experience with them, I won't be rescheduling with them.

This is an update to my previous review below. Mr. Henkel recently rectified the situation by paying for the new roofer to make the correct repairs. I purchased my home based on an agreement with the sellers that the roof would be inspected for leaks and that it would be properly ventilated. The sellers hired Mr. Henkel's company who installed 2 new air vents and inspected the roof on 7/21/13 and provided a Roof Certification which states that the roof is "in satisfactory condition with no evidence of leaks" and that two new vents were installed in the roof. The certification also states that "all roofs have sound sheathing", however, the roof has been leaking on the same piece of wood as one of the vents that this company installed. I attempted to contact Mr. Henkel 4 times on 4 different days and was told by the woman in his office that he would return the calls, which he never did. When I finally got in touch with him on my fifth call to his office, he stated that he already sent someone to the home, while we were not there, and inspected the roof "from the outside" and that the roof is fine. I then requested that someone come out while I was home so I could show them the leak from inside the attic and he scheduled someone to come out on 10/2/13. He then called on 9/30/13 and said the person could not come out on the 2nd and could only come on the 1st although, again, no one would be home. Mr. Henkel again, said there is nothing wrong with the roof by visually inspecting it from the outside although there continues to be a puddle in the attic when it rains and the sheathing is wet and rotted. I have now had a new, reputable roofer go on the roof and he was able to spot the issue immediately, something this company was unable (or unwilling) to do. This repair will now cost me $825. This home was purchased on the contingency that the roof had no leaks and would be properly ventilated. I have a Roof Certification from this company dated July 21, 2013 (which is attached) stating that the roof is "in satisfactory condition with no evidence of leaks" and that they installed two new vents in the roof. The certification also states that "all roofs have sound sheathing", however, the sheathing where his vent is placed is rotted as well as in another area. This home would not have been purchased if his certification did not state that the roof had no leaks and the sheathing was sound. It is obvious that this roofer did not properly inspect the sheathing from the inside or they would have seen the rotted wood and known there was an active leak. The new roofer said this is not a new leak and that Mr. Henkel should have seen it in July when he gave the Certification. This was not a cost that I should have had to incur which is why it was in the purchase agreement that the roof be inspected for leaks. It was Mr. Henkel’s certification that caused us to proceed with the purchase of the home. And now we have the added expense of repairing the roof which we should have avoided by having Mr. Henkel inspect the roof prior to purchase. Mr. Henkel has not been cooperative in this whole process and had an attitude when I spoke to him about.

We were in the process of selling our home and had a contract in on the home. After the home inspection, it was discovered we needed a new roof. The buyer’s agent sent this company out for a quote. They showed up on time but did not listen to what was required. I told them to do the quote for the same shingles (3 tab) which were on the roof. In addition, I informed them there were sheets of plywood which needed to be replaced. When the quote came back, it was for an upgraded shingle and there was no allowance for any plywood replacement. They charge $100 a sheet for plywood (which is insane) and could have added thousands of dollars to their quote (45 sheets of plywood). I found another A rated company on Angie's List who replaced the roof and all the sheeting (they only charged me $900 more to replace all the sheeting on the roof) for only slightly more then this company. I was so happy with this other company's work I had them replace my roof on my new home. So at the end of the day it is their loss for not listening, just be aware of potential hidden cost if you use this company. ---UPDATE--- This contractor did indeed provide the quote, the quote has the same address listed as Angie's List. The proposal was dated June 12th and the reference number was 12-333.

See above. Henkel decided to threaten / pursue legal action versus accepting my payment for just materials as we agreed to. They seem to be trying to recoup some labor costs by force of hand. I would have contracted them again to do roofing work, but threatening legal action when they are trying to charge me more than our agreed on work does not speak highly of Henkel.
Description of Work: I contracted Henkel originally to put vinyl siding on top of the old, deteriorating asphalt siding. They also silver coated my roof. I was happy with these services and requested an estimate for more work to be done. They did not give me an estimate. Most recently, Henkel was at my neighbors house to fix a porch roof job they did a year prior that had failed. The rotted wood on her porch had not been replaced it had simply been vinyl'd over and hidden. They came out to re-do the job and take out the rotting wood. The rotting wood extended a few feet onto my porch so Henkel told me that I would have to pay for them to replace a few feet of wood on my porch. I told them I had not budgeted for it at the time and would not be able to move forward with the work. Henkel, very reasonably, told me that he did not want to put me in a tough spot so would do the work for just the materials cost which would not exceed a few hundred dollars. I agreed to paying for just materials so that he could move forward with my neighbors job as needed. I also asked for an estimate for some other work to be done. They did not give me an estimate. I recently had a Henkel employee come out to my house telling me I owed them $610. I asked to speak to the owner of Henkel and he put me on the phone with him. Henkel proceeded to tell me that I had agreed to labor AND materials cost through a verbal contract and they would sue me if I did not pay them immediately. I told Henkel that I obviously have paid them for services performed before and that I have no problem paying for what I AGREED to - which is the materials cost. Henkel hung up on me and said we were done.

Found these guys through Angie's List. My garage roof, which is a 'flat' rubber roof, has sprung a leak and needs to be replaced. In the mean time I needed to have the snow and ice removed because there was a LOT of it up there causing all kinds of problems. They were very responsive and timely. The 2 workers who came to do the work were SO nice and professional. Can't say enough about them. It was FREEZING and they were extremely chipper, courteous and very helpful. I wasn't expecting snow removal to cost this much, so I gave a B for that... but I have no point of reference. Based on the estimate that they've given me to replace the roof, which seems extremely reasonable, the cost to remove the snow and ice could very well be great as well. Thanks so much.

It went fine. Mr. Henkel had taken digital photos of the roof damage while he was up there and so could show me exactly what he was talking about. At the end of the job one of the workmen was happy to take some more photos for me so I could see the work. The workmen were polite, cheerful and communicative, explaining anything I wanted to know about what they were doing. They asked about any interior trouble spots so they could check them in particular. The company's employees all seem happy to help out however they can with call-backs and information and attention to the customer's needs. I have to recommend them highly.
Description of Work: On the recommendation of a trusted neighbor I called Henkel Roofing. Mr. Henkel came over promptly and then mailed me the estimate. On the appointed day, three men arrived. They swept the roof clean and removed a large bunch of vines that had taken over the drain area. They re-roofed the center parapet wall and the drain area with mineral surface modified bitumen roofing and repaired the slit around the hatch. They covered the roof with aluminum coating and repaired the flashing on the side of the house, cleaned up and removed all debris. At no extra charge they also recovered and fixed the hatch exterior cover, which had not been on the original estimate.

From the first time I called Henkel to come and inspect my roof/give mean estimate on the work. He/they responded promptly every single time (and I did call more than once with questions). The workers came as early as they were allowed on the day they were supposed to and stayed until they finished in early evening. While they were working, they were courteous, efficient and as quiet as they could be under the circumstances. Mr. Henkel called after the job was finished to ask if everything was satisfactory - and it was.
Description of Work: MAIN ROOF - Removed existing roof, replaced drain with custom-made copper eave box; secured fiberglass base sheet; installed granulated modified Bitumen roofing system; re-flashed all roof protrusions; fabricated and installed new aluminum roof edging; reroofed parapet walls with mineral-surfaced, modified Bitumen roofing system; provided and installed new skylight; provided 15-yr material and 15-yr workmanship warranty. SHINGLE PENTS - Removed existing shingles base sheet and flashing. Installed ice and storm shield; nailed 30lb base sheet; fabricated and installed aluminum capping; shingled roof with 30-yr dimensional shingles; reflashed all roof protrusions to include neoprene pipe collars; cleaned property and removed all work-related debris.
