The home inspection report I received before I purchased my house noted the roof problems which I decided to have taken care of shorty after I moved in. Mr. Brown promptly returned my call and did an estimate. As soon as weather permitted (mid-summer thunderstorms and high temperatures), he completed the work. He thoroughly explained everything he had done. I'm not a ladder-climber and therefore did not go up to my roof to inspect it but I can say it has held up through all the summer downpours and the reflective coating has made a significant difference in the temperature on the second floor.
Description of Work: Repaired large air pocket/blister on the roof; sealed all openings around corners, capping, chimney and walls; applied reflective aluminum coating to roof.

He showed up and finished when he said he would. The clean up he did was just wonderful. He picked up all the scrap shingles, tar paper, and roofing nails. I use him for all my properties.
Description of Work: The contractor removed and replaced shingles on my 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath, and 2 story house on the same day. I don't remember the exact square footage of shingles that were replaced.

I thought they did a very good job. The roof has held up fine through two big storms. I won't give out his prices but it was really reasonable for the repairs. I thought his follow up was not as good as he never confirmed his appointment date and time with me.
Description of Work: I had a section of my roof repaired when it was leaking. They patched it and put up new shingles in that spot.

We are grateful to Mr. Brown for doing the incredible amount of work that he did for such a low cost. A couple of warnings, though. 1. Mr. Brown's estimates of how much longer the siding job would take him were consistently off. 2. Mr. Brown did not appropriately dispose of his garbage. He filled our trash can with debris which the city refused to take. Also, he left some debris on the neighbor's porch. 3. As you can see in the close up photo, the trim on the siding doesn't look like it was done by a specialist, but that's why we could afford it. In the end, though, the roof no longer leaks. The house looks SO MUCH BETTER than it did before. And, when we asked Mr. Brown to do additional work trim work after we'd already paid the balance, he did. He acted in good faith, and I don't think we can really ask more than that. We would definitely hire him again if our roofs leak.
Description of Work: Two small roofs that just out from the house were leaking, in spite of having been redone in 2004 (not by Mr. Brown). In both cases water was hitting the wall above the roof, getting through the old wall surface and running under the roofing surface that had been applied. To solve these problems, it was necessary to deal with the walls and the roofing simultaneously. We needed to replace three windows, remove the existing roof surface, replace the sections of rotten wood under the roof surface, redo the roofing surface, run the roofing surface partway up the wall of the house, and then install new siding on the back of the house. We got several estimates for the work and found that larger companies would bring in a specialized team for each step of the process, which brought the estimate to more than $12,000. Harvey Brown estimated that the entire job would cost $4600 plus some additional charge for dealing with unseen rotten wood.

After a couple of cancellations, Mr. Harvey Brown finally came, looked at the problem, suggested a solution and left saying he will call me back with an estimate. Came out within two days of call to give estimate. Finished all work withing 3 days of estimate. Very fairly priced. I have a roof hatch, and spoke with him about concerns I had about walking on roof. He was knowledgeable and courteous. Did not spend an a lot of time communicating after his initial estimate (no real need to). If you are looking for constant communication, like I am used to ordering an item online, then he may not be the man for you. If you want a good clear estimate and excellent quality work, at least on a small row home. I live in the ghetto and he had no concerns about how to secure his equipment and did not think twice about coming out, several other contractors would not even come to my home.
Description of Work: Did silvercoat on the roof of my row home in north Philadelphia and did some flashing around a structure that was not appropriately completed by another contractor.

We tried three times to get Harvey Brown to come out to look at our roof and he canceled or rescheduled each time (bad sign). Finally he came out, spent about an hour on the roof, finally I went up there to see what was going on and it was as if he was just killing time up there (bad sign). He said he'd the job wasn't a problem, but wanted time to come up with and a proper estimate (bad sign) and would be back to us in a few days. That was the last we heard from Harvey Brown. I think what most contractors don't get, is that when you promise to call and then don't follow up (even if you don't want the job), it is rude, insulting and really messes up your plans. We had a bad feeling about Harvey Brown based his flighty behavior. What else can we say?

Mr. Brown called me back within 24 hours of my initial message left for him. He arrived for the inspection on time. From that day until the end of the project, Mr.Brown was very communicative and prompt in all our dealings together. The work was completed within the times he predicted. There were a few weather and illness related delays, but still, Mr. Brown kept me updated on the schedule. Work looks great, though only time can truly tell with a roof, right? But, he did guarantee the work for 12 years, so we are quite pleased.
Description of Work: I had some roof leaking, and knew I probably needed a new roof, as it was around 12+ years old. Our home inspector also noted this 4 years ago when purchasing the home. Flat rubber roof. We also needed new downspouts.

I had light water stains in two bedrooms, specifically at the far corners of one side of the house and along the top edge of one of the room's wall where the ceiling meets the wall. My roof was about 10 yrs old. Harvey explained that the roof was fine. He indicated that the shingles on the house's NW side were not flushed against the roof. This small gap was enough to allow water to penetrate and enter along the house's corners and edges when wind blown rain hits the roof. Missing mortar spotted on the chimney would account for water running along the roof and getting into the SW corner of the house but not the NW corner. Harvey was the only roofer who provided a plausible, common sense explanation for water getting into the NW corner of the house. An estimate from another roofer (from Angie's List) attributed the water problem only to the chimney. Harvey gave a detailed explanation during his initial inspection. He is honest, professional, and very reasonable.
Description of Work: Harvey caulked the "A" frame of my roof on one side of the house. He also pointed my chimney and caulked the base of it.

Harvey came out to look and give me an estimate two days after I called him. He was very upfront about the work required; said that I could probably just patch up the problem if I wanted a temporary fix, but that the underlying issue (the bad wood) would only get worse over time and cause more problems. He called back a few days later with an estimate for the whole job. The work was completed a week or so later, with no problems. It turned out to be $150 less than the estimate. It was just done a few days ago so it's hard for me to say with certainty anything about the quality of the job, but hopefully this will solve the leaking problems. Overall, Harvey was very good, very honest, and communicated with me when he said he would. I would definitely recommend him.
Description of Work: The wood underneath my lower roof had gone bad and was causing occasional leaking inside my house, so the job was to take the roof off, replace an 8x8' area of wood, and then put on a new roof. Luckily my lower roof is only 15x15' total, or else this could have been much more expensive.

Mr. Brown returned our calls fairly promptly (within 2 to 3 business days), and we set up a time for him to come look at the problem and to give an estimate. We agreed upon 7:30 in the morning on a weekday - I explained to him that I have to be on the road to work no later than 8 am. Mr. Brown called me at 7:35 the morning of the estimate and told me that he was running late. He said that he might make it by 8:15, but he couldn't make any promises. He wanted to reschedule for another day, but we wanted to get the ball rolling on the job right away so I decided to wait for him. He showed up at ten after 8. I showed him the problem and what I wanted to have done. He seemed completely disinterested, and he tracked roofing tar from his boots throughout our home. He told me that he would cook up an estimate and call me later that afternoon, but I never heard from him again. I was late for work and I am still trying to clean the tar from off our floors.
Description of Work: We asked Mr. Brown to provide us an estimate to repair a broken gutter on the front of our home. The gutter's pitch was off, which was causing water to pool up at the wrong end (i.e. away from the downspout and above the front door of our home).
