Description of Work: Home renovations are never easy, but working with dRemodeling was incredibly difficult, and we do not recommend it. At first the process seemed to go well. We met with one of their in house designers, who helped us decide on a layout for our new kitchen. We largely knew what we wanted, but the designer did have some good suggestions. Once the work actually started on the kitchen, however, it went downhill fast. It is really a shame, because we are quite pleased with the end product. There were numerous issues that came up throughout the demolition and construction, which is to be expected with an older house. There was a total lack of communication, however, between the designer, our crew and the owner of the business. The crew repeatedly asked us for decisions about different items that we had either already discussed with the designer or that we were waiting for a response from the designer and/or owner on. It would have been easier to just deal with the crew, but it is hard to do that without knowing what the different options are going to cost. We ended up sending email after email to the designer and owner highlighting the problems and expressing our frustration, but the situation never really improved. The owner was out of the country during part of the project, which made things even more difficult. Then the designer we were working with left the company before our project was finished. There were days when no one showed up to work on the kitchen and we had no idea why. We had to contact the office to find out if anyone would be coming and if not, why. If it wasn't for Adrian, who did the majority of the work on the kitchen by himself, we don't know what we would have done. He was the only one who actually thought through the issues that our kitchen raised, explained what our choices were to address those issues and was concerned about what we wanted and how the finished product would look. Vlad also did a very nice job with the finishing touches to the kitchen once all the major work was complete. | |Toward the end of our project, the owner wasn't pleased that the project was taking longer than he had estimated, and he started to try to rush the crew to get things done. He kept on arbitrarily saying that there were only a few things left to do and that the project would be done on this day and then another day. It should be noted that most days there was only one person working on the project, Adrian, so I use the term crew loosely. This led to sloppy mistakes that we weren't going to accept. We are detail oriented people and were paying a lot of money for our kitchen to be remodeled. We weren't going to be okay with countertops that were cut incorrectly (not the crew's fault, but it caused a delay) or crooked tiles in our backsplash! We ended up getting an incredibly rude and unprofessional email from the owner saying that the delays were because we were too picky and threatening to charge us extra money if the kitchen wasn't finished by the end of Monday (this was Friday). Needless to say, that didn't go over well with us. This was in addition to the owner trying to add on all sorts of extra costs right at the end of the project without proper explanation. We had no problem paying for what we were getting, but it became ridiculous. | |All in all, dRemodeling has a talented, polite crew, but we would never work with them again because of the owner. In fact, we needed to have the range hood replaced because it wasn't working right (not because of installation issues, just a faulty hood), and we hired another contractor to do the work.

I am a believer in doing whatever you have to do to keep a customer happy, but as the leader of the business, you must often make the difficult choice of what is, and isn't, reasonable. Sometimes, what the customer considers reasonable and what the business model deems reasonable are very different things. Here are a few examples that relate to this project. This project was very successful in terms of our client is happy with their end product and with the crew and team that helped make this a successful remodel. The client is solely unhappy with the owner, the person who oversees the day to day scheduling of the crew, their quality and quantity of work output in terms of finishing and materials used, the design team, and how the business is generally conducted. With these duties, comes the responsibility of keeping each and every project on target from the initial consultation and proposal, to the final nail of the finishing touches, that balances a successful project with the clients expectations. Labor contracts are done prior to final design choices are made, and therefore sometimes result in charges being added to the end of a project due to materials selected (complex tile design and custom carpentry for example) or unforeseen issues. At the end of the project, I review all of the work included in our agreement and the additional work performed and send the client all associated costs that are identified in the contract to be billed separately per the hour or square foot. Being the fact I was on vacation when some of this extra work occurred and therefore unable to manage the associated costs effectively at the rise of each incident, I removed some of the additional charges that they disagreed with. Scheduling a crew works coordinates directly with an intended installation schedule, and when unforeseen issues cause delays, or additional work, the appropriate crew member or materials might not be made available immediately, creating a delay. We had 7 technicians (licensed plumber, electrician, carpenter, general laborer, painter) involved in the project other than the project manager mentioned (Adrian), each of which has a certain specialty that they contribute to the project. There we many days that 3-4 crew members would be working on this project as the schedule allowed. Indeed, there were days when only one technician, or none, would be on site due to material delays (3rd party counter top installations for example) or due to unforeseen issues creating a ripple effect, and we strive to make up this lost time by working weekends as often as necessary. By communicating daily directly with the crew and not the office, homeowners can hinder the progress of work being done, by distracting the technicians with questions, concerns, and change orders, and also increase liability by being involved in the job site hazards. Punch list items need to be addressed at the end of projects, instead of touching up as work is done, so work can be completed as the schedule dictates, preventing further delays. When issues are brought up to the crew, the designer, and the owner by the homeowner- it takes time to resolve these issues in the most cost and labor effective way possible, and then to relay these options back to the homeowner to make a decision. Whether the owner was on vacation or not, these issues take time to resolve and communication is always a trait we look to improve upon in our everyday affairs. Part of being a business owner is knowing when and where to make decisions based on the timeline of the project and the requested change orders that are deemed within the agreed upon scope of work. Fixing a glass mosaic back splash tile that the manufacturer installs on an approved backing with some discrepancy between the joint lines, and then having our crew take the time to manually adjust each tile so they are equal, could be considered out of scope, and causing a delay in schedule. We hope to always meet our client expectations, and sometimes, certain projects need a very hands on approach, from the crew and owner, to finalize the project, and hope to be even more clear about our work process in the future. We are happy that the customer is happy with our work and our crew in the end, and hope to clarify some of these issues by expanding upon the construction process and the role of the owner within it. We are deeply apologetic that we did not meet your expectations. As your bathroom was small, we thought the best solution would be to provide you with 2 sets of design drawings with plans/ elevations, along with a material list and digital design board to provide you with some options for the space. A 3D rendering of such a small area would not have shown as much information as what we provided you with. We do appreciate your feedback however, as it helps us to understand that our posting was clearly not comprehensive enough to provide you with an adequate expectation for the project.

The representative from Dremodeling responded to my call right away. We set up a meeting time, and he showed up on time. He didn't really listen to me during our meeting and seemed like he already made up his mind that he didn't want to do the job. A couple of days after our meeting, he emailed me an estimate that was, no joke, $15,000 more than the highest estimates we had already received for the same services. I already knew that I was not going to hire him because of the indifferent vibe I got during the meeting, but I couldn't believe the price difference. And to top it all of, the gentleman from the company continues to send me emails asking me why I have not responded! I politely let him know that we decided to go with someone else, but I continue to get emails from them asking me how much I spent and how the remodel went. Just recently I sent a final email letting them know to stop harrasing me and that the project was done for $15,000 less.
Description of Work: Reached out to Dremodeling based on positive reviews on Angie's List. We were taking estimates for our kitchen and bathroom remodeling project.

I'd like to respond to this member's comments because unfortunately they are mostly a fabrication. I'm not sure the motive behind this review but I'll detail the true story below. At dRemodeling we put passion into our work while maintaining competitive prices as you'll see from our other STRAIGHT “A” REPORTS here on Angie’s list. Our customers have had only wonderful things to say about our work and their experience with our company because that is an accurate description of the service we have provide to them and will continue to provide to all our customers. Unfortunately this customer is the type of person that wants something for nothing. While we tried to provide him with the services he wanted there is a point where even the best of the best cannot fulfill such demands. Customers must have reasonable expectations for us to perform work at the price they are willing to pay. The numbers that this gentleman stated would barely cover the materials cost. Our price was very competitive but it is IMPOSSIBLE to do that project with less than $20,000 as he stated even if he uses unlicensed and uninsured contractors. The project included adding 5-7 feet to the house (new roof, gutters, and structural work), removing a wall between the living room and kitchen, leveling the floor, a total kitchen remodel with all plumbing relocation, Kraft Maid cabinetry with granite counter tops and a new floor. Additionally, new windows, completed the gutted master bathroom with all materials provided by contractor (tiles, vanity, sink toilet faucets, tub, glass enclosure, etc.) Almost anyone can figure out that a total kitchen and bathroom makeover is implausible with just $20,000. We tried our best to accommodate this customer but there are just some people who cannot be satisfied no matter how much you give them. This review was done 6 months after the estimate. I exchanged 3-4 total emails with this customer. After I sent him the proposal I emailed him ONCE to ask him if he has updates and how the project ended. I was just being polite and I wanted to see how his project ended. He NEVER sent us emails saying to stop "harassing" him because we only exchanged a few short messages. If these sounds like harassment to you then tell me I was in the wrong but I think most folks would find this acceptable. If this review leaves you questioning dRemodeling's legitimacy then I understand and I wish you best of luck with whatever contractors you choose to hire for your project. However, take into mind that most contractors encounter customers of this nature somewhere along the line while still producing excellent work for the sensible people out there who have high expectations but not unreasonable demands. Let us come to your home or business and give you an estimate. I guarantee you'll see none of what was mentioned in this review.
We interviewed several contractors before choosing Dan. All the quotes were competitive, however we chose Dan because we felt he was the most patient & knowledgeable. He listened to our concerns; he was respectful, trustworthy and extremely skilled to take on this project. When the project started, his team arrived promptly everyday they worked. They kept the area clean when they left every day. During the project, Dan communicated with me about progress and next steps. I even had to leave town at one point and I felt comfortable in doing so. The work continued perfectly in my absence. Dan didn?t make any decisions or changes without notifying me of the issue. Overall, I can?t say enough about how great the kitchen turned out. It is the best room in the entire house. I would hire Dremodeling again for any of my projects.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen renovation in an old row house built in 1940s. Dan and his team gutted the entire kitchen from ceiling to floor right down to the studs and built a beautiful, structurally sound, kitchen. The job presented many challenges. There was old insufficient electrical wiring, sinking floor, water damaged walls, bad windows. We chose Dan and his team because of his excellent patience and knowledge of the job ahead. Plus his background in structural engineering was extremely important.

As is often the case when renovating an older home, you don't know all that you are dealing with until you open the walls and floor. And that was the case here: joists that were cut back and no framing on the exterior wall. These discoveries caused some adjustments to the design, but Dan and his guys were great at working with the circumstances to still give me my "must-haves," such as a pocket door to save space. The bathroom is completely transformed, friends can not believe it's the same space. Dan's guys were always polite and professional. I would recommend dRemodeling to others and I will call them again when I have another project.
Description of Work: Dan and his crew demo'ed and renovated my bathroom. My house is a small South Philly rowhome, the size of the bath developed was smaller than 6 feet by 5 1/2 feet.

From the start, Dan was very responsive and polite. He was always available by phone and responded promptly to emails. The job was mainly performed by two other gentlemen. They were both very professional and considerate. Dan's estimate for the labor was fair (see below for the estimate on the materials) and he stuck to it, even though I think they ended up having to do more work than they anticipated when they discovered the condition of the subfloor underneath the tile they removed. If so, they didn't charge us extra for that additional work and materials and we appreciated that. They did a good job of keeping the mess from the demolition contained to the kitchen, and left the kitchen in a state so that we could use it at the end of each day. They knew we would need to use our kitchen that week, so they made sure that they didn't disconnect more appliances than they needed to for that day, and then moved it all back in place at the end of the day so we could use them that evening. Although it was messy, we were not without a kitchen during the remodel and that was appreciated. The project ran longer than they anticipated it would, but they were flexible about getting it finished to meet our time concerns, staying late one night to get it finished in time. We are very pleased with the finished product. They paid huge attention to detail, making sure every cut was measured and perfect, and it really shows. We would use them again and again, and plan to call them when we are ready to start our next project. The only wrinkle in the whole experience is that we were left with a good amount of extra floor tile amounting to a few hundred dollars. The flooring place where we purchased the tile (Avalon Flooring) at Dan's recommendation will not take it back, so we will have to try to sell it. Dan did offer to try to use it on another job, so we could get some money back for it, so it may be resolved in that manner. I would not use Avalon Flooring again to buy materials, though. I think it is a bad policy that you cannot return unopened boxes of tile, especially when you are not told that at the time of purchase. In all, we are very pleased with our new kitchen floor. Dan is a great businessman and the gentlemen he has working for him, especially the older one, are really good. The older gentleman's work was awesome. We are very impressed by his expertise. He takes great pride in his work. Thank you to Dan and Dremodeling!
Description of Work: Dan and his company replaced our kitchen floor. They had to remove the existing ceramic tile and subfloor and then lay two new layers of subfloor and the new floor. Our home is 100 years old and not level in some areas, so they had to do a lot to get a good, flat subfloor. Also, there were a lot of cuts in our kitchen and small powder room beside the kitchen, which involved removing the toilet and sink, washer and dryer, stove, etc., so putting the new floor in was labor intensive.

Dan was great to work with. He is responsive to concerns, and follows up queries quickly. His recommendations for places to shop turned out to be excellent. We had a very tight schedule and he managed to finish the vast majority of work on time. The crew who worked in the kitchen were excellent. They were definitely concerned with doing a professional job (not just in a hurry) plus they were very tidy in cleaning up every day/

From start to finish, it was a complete pleasure working with DRemodeling. They were very responsive, friendly, communicated what was happening throughout the project, delivered what they promised, took tremendous attention to detail, and provided outstanding work. We live in an old rowhome that's needed remodeling, and due to some existing problems in the bathroom, we had to remodel the bathroom quickly. We sent DRemodeling an inquiry on a Sunday afternoon, listing some of the problems we faced and asking for a quote to complete the job. Dan emailed right back with a few thoughts and quickly put together a preliminary quote, based on a few photos that we emailed to him. A few days later, Dan came out and finalized the quote and sent over a contract. They started work shortly thereafter and finished the job within the time-frame specified in the contract (8-9 business days). The DRemodeling crew was friendly, courteous, and worked hard throughout the day - even on hot July days w/ no central A/C. The team leader, Alin, made sure to communicate how the project was going, ask questions about our particular preferences for placement of tiles, fixtures, finishes, etc. It was clear that the crew took pride in the work that they completed, as each phase of the project was done with a high level of detail & precision. Additionally, Dan called throughout the project to ensure that it was progressing well. He visited our home a few times to view the progress on the project, ask if we had any questions, and take care of obtaining necessary supplies. This opened communication to voice any concerns we had or ask questions, and when we did have a question/concern, it was addressed. The bathroom remodel is completed and looks great! We were so happy to work with DRemodeling. We have more projects to complete in our home & hope to work with them again.

DRemodeling gutted and renovated 2 bathrooms in our 1920s house in University City. They were extremely responsive -- Dan emailed me constantly and promptly responded to my many queries. We worked together to order materials from the internet and from some brick and mortar stores. They installed glass mosaic tiles (floor-to-ceiling) and white carrera marble floors. We are very happy with the results. They came promptly and worked every day from approximately 9 to 5. Tudor was the lead worker and was meticulous. We would not hesitate to recommend them.

I got 5 quotes from different contractors. Dan's estimate was extremely fair. Not only did I feel his price was the best for what he was offering to do, but I liked his ideas, his professionalism, and his friendliness. Dan and his team started the project on the day they said they would and arrived on time. They came everyday, worked long hours and even worked a few saturdays. His crew was very respectful, and professional and trustworthy. I had to work during the day, and so they were alone in my house and I never worried about anything. The project was particularly challenging, more so than we originally thought. Because of the age of the house, we found out the floor was unlevel and didn't have enough support in areas. The crew leveled the floor (which wasn't in the original estimate, but didn't cost me extra), put down radiant heat and tiled the floor. My house has trinity stairs, which were too narrow to get the tub, shower doors and vanity up. Dan rented a hoist and they had to bring everything in through the bedroom window. They installed the jacuzzi tub, built a tile wall around it, installed and tiled the shower with frameless glass doors, put in the vanity, light, mirrror and toilet. They also expanded my closet and patched the ceiling. They cleaned up the mess at the end of each day. Dan stopped by just about every night to make sure I was happy with the progess. If I made suggestions or asked for changes, he would make sure they happened (if it was possible.) Dan called me any time they had a question as to how I wanted something done. The project was finished exactly when they said it would be. Most importantly, Dan stuck to the budget and still made sure I had everything I wanted. I got well known brand name products (Kohler, Toto) and was never told something wasn't in the budget. Before starting the project, I had a vision in my head of how I wanted it to look....Dan and his team far exceeded even my own expectations. I would definitely use this company again and would recommend them to my friends without hesitation.
Description of Work: I have a 150 year old house where the 3rd floor of the house had just 2 bedrooms. I hired Dan from dremodeling to open up the wall between the 2 bedrooms and turn one of the bedrooms into a master bathroom. The agreements on the contract included demolition work, installing a shower stall, jacuzzi tub, toilet, and vanity, doing all the necessary plumbing as well as some electrical work, putting in radiant floor heating and painting. I also hired them to expand the closet in the bedroom and patch the ceiling from a leak.

We had several contractors for estimating. We were worried about the house being old and the structure being affected by the weather. I liked Dan because he is an engineer and he assured me that everything will be ok and any issues discovered during construction they will be fixed by the code They were by far more professional than other contractors. They came at the estimate. They listen to our ideas and they took measurements. Couple of days later we received an email with their proposal, license and insurance information, references list and a beautiful photo realistic 3d rendering of our feature bathroom . I love it. The price was competitive and we signed the contract. I was out of town for most part during construction. The project took 4 weeks and they worked every day with 2-3 men. Dan emailed me daily updates with progress photos. At the end the result was spectacular. Good Job !

From my first phone call to them for an estimate, they were extremely responsive and customer service oriented. We never had a question that went unanswered. Payments for the project were made in installments throughout the course of the project, to be sure that each stage was completed to our satisfaction before we paid for it. And the finished product still leaves my wife and I in awe. Dan was great to work with, and the guys that did the work were extremely curteous and of course punctual. They made sure to take extra precautions to make sure that no other parts of our home was damaged, and that any mess was kept to a minimum.
Description of Work: Remodel of a 6x9 bathroom in a 90 year old house. Room was completely gutted, all major plumbing fixtures were moved to new locations, new sub floor, dry wall, tile on floor and tub surround, and an additional vanity was added.

The estimate was reasonable for the job, high middle range, and billed in installments as the job progressed with approval. The workmen were punctual, courteous and professional, with a good eye for detail. They were very careful to protect the surrounding space with drop cloths and plastic sheeting. They worked long hours to complete the full job on time, and provided close communication on job progress. The craftsmanship and detailing are first rate and reminiscent of old-world tradesmen. They left the completed space clean as a whistle. I plan to use this company for all our work, and am recommending them to our patrons who rave about the new space. They are really a cut above.
Description of Work: We run the PSALM Salon, a non-profit performing arts mini-theater in our home, an old mansion in Philadelphia. We got estimates from a number of contractors. We hired DRemodeling based on their approach to the job, to remove a portion of a bearing wall to join two halves of the performing space, build 2 knee walls with custom granite counter tops and moldings, fabricate load bearing post, re-route electrical, install dimmer and wall sconces, plaster, plaster and paint to match; remove double hung sash and install glass block window wall with air conditioning unit at base, trim and paint to match.

Dremodeling was accommodating to the hours we worked at the office, showed up on time, communicated with us regularly about what was happening and cleaned up all of their work. I can't complain about a single thing they did. They we clean, efficient and the work looks great.
Description of Work: Dremodeling replaced and repaired 6 bathrooms for me in the building I manage. They fixed overhead lights and fans, leaking tubs and toilets and repaired the massive holes that the new water heater installations left.

I had this company patch the holes that the previous contractor put in to the walls of the building that I manage and then repaint the entire hallway and stairwell system. He covered five floors and did an excellent job being in the apartments after the tenants had left and was cleaned up and gone before they arrived. Dremodeling was extremely considerate and very neat and tidy. They even came back to fix a section of wall and ceiling that was ruined when one of the water heaters in an apartment sprung a heavy leak. Free of charge. The company was efficient and helpful and moved quickly without doing a less-than-stellar job. I would call them again.
Description of Work: Repaired and patched walls, ceilings, and stairwells. Sanded and taped the walls and repainted the 11,000 SF of wall and ceiling to match the previous color. Enclosed new HVAC ducts that were previously installed. Replaced half dozen exhaust fans including re-wiring them and their lights to building code. Even came back to repaint something that was not part of the original invoice.

skylights

This was the second time that we used Dremodeling. The installation went very well. We left them in the office on Friday night and they were finished with all of the work by the time we returned to work Monday morning. The office was locked and the keys had been pushed through the mail slot. The skylights had automatic rain-sensors that had to be tied into the electrical from the building and Dremodeling cut in the wires and ran all the electrical, then they spackled and painted the bathroom and the ceiling where the skylights had been installed and installed a new color-matched door. But the best part about Dremodeling is that on Monday morning, we couldn't tell that the skylights had been installed over the weekend. They left the place as clean as it was before they arrived and they didn't spill or mess up anything and removed all their garbage, even the lunch food that might have been put into our office trash. Not a trace of the contractor was there when we opened Monday morning.
Description of Work: Installed and wired three electric skylights and installed three crank skylights in the roof.
