Great! Don always was there when he said he would be, did what he said he would, explained everything to me in a way I could understand, did an excellent job (better than I thought possible), came in under estimate, and was a pleasure to work with. I will definitely engage him again for all projects he provides services for.

Response from CARACO CARPENTRY
While I am sorry, I must say that I did send several emails with a quote attached. Along with several emails inquiring about the quotes, and if it looked good or if there were any questions. After not receiving a reply of any kind I assumed that the client found better numbers. I at that point moved on with work that I got reply's for.

Despite some early communication problems, which were due to unavoidable life events, once we connected and the work started, Don and team did an excellent job. They really paid great attention to and quot;the detailsand quot; without over indulging and wasting time. Unlike other contractors with whom I've worked in the last few months, this team has a great work ethic. From the thorough estimate process detailing range and scope (it actually came in under budget) to the photo CD documenting all the stages of work,to the recommendations for future care of the work done as well as other adjoining structures, it was obvious this carpenter took care and pride in his work. I now have painters working to finish my continuing house repair project, following up on what Don started. Having come after plenty of carpenters, they had never seen the quality of the woodwork that had been done and how it had all been prepped for paint; it was, using the overused yet seldom true term, and quot;paint ready.and quot; At the end of their first day the painters told me again, unsolicited, and quot;Your carpenter did a GREAT job!and quot;. I agree with the painters. I will hire Don and team again to do all my carpentry work.
Description of Work: All under a tight budget, Don Caraco and team repaired our front porch which, among other things, involved ripping out rotting and poorly installed work from a previous owner. He and his team also addressed similar issues with our aging, improperly built back deck, securing the existing woodwork in addition to adding new, correctly installed supports. Lastly he addressed another poorly executed former-owner-repair to our second floor overhang, removing and replacing rotted trim, removing cheap and incorrect patchwork, and shoring up the masonry below and adjoining. All this was done with the greatest attention to detail as well as other professional courtesies that other contractors neglect to do such as: document his work photographically at every stage, cover and protect our nearby flowers, collect and dispose of trash, and communicate the days progress. He even cleared an obstructed drain he noticed by chance on our porch roof - at no extra charge. All the carpentry was truly finished to "paint-ready" status.

The stairs look good. The owner is Donald. He is very laid back, and sometimes he is little hard to get hold of. Once I get in touch with him, he is very prompt at getting things done. His prices are fair. He finished the work within a good amount of time. We couldn't see him doing much work because we went for vacation.
Description of Work: Caraco Carpentry built a new back stairs and also for our backyard more than a year ago. He did some demolish work in our garage, and some prep work for our plumber to come and move our laundry room.

Again, this was much too big a project to describe in detail. But Don took charge from the start --- that is, before I bought the house --- and solved the massive initial problem, which was that the back portion of this 150-year-old rowhouse was sinking. Given the scope of the work and my financial limitations, it took about a year and a half, but Don was there absolutely whenever I needed him, which was most of the time. He broke down the project into phases, charging on a time-plus-materials basis, so I could closely track what was getting spent.
Description of Work: Don practically rebuilt my house. He built a two-story addition, and in the old part of the house installed new joists, relocated interior walls, repaired old plaster and put in new drywall, replaced windows, reclaimed and repaired old trim and doors, made built-in cabinets, regraded the yard, and much more. The work is really too massive to describe. He coordinated work with an architect, mason, electrician, plumber, roofer, HVAC guys and other pros but did almost everything else himself.

I recently bought my first house, a funky little trinity, and discovered (after buying it, and after a lousy home inspection failed to pick this up) that my stairs from the 2nd to the 3rd floor were physically coming apart. I had a bunch of professionals look at it, including a structural engineer, who deemed the house unsafe to occupy until the stairs were fixed. After getting a whole bunch of estimates, Don Caraco, who responded to my calls quickly and came over immediately, was totally the guy for the job. He just really knew what he was talking about, and provided a bunch of creative and very effective solutions for fixing my funky flight of stairs. These stairs, it should be noted, are curved and totally weird (see description of work above). Don's work was superb and he was an absolute pleasure to hang out with, and as I saw how he was accomplishing the job, I asked him to give me a bunch of estimates for other little jobs around the house (again, see above for details). The incredible thing was, as I hesitated about the additional costs this would incur, he actually told me that fixing that first flight of stairs had been easier than he anticipated and that therefore I was well under budget, and that all the additional work would still get me in UNDER the initial estimate he had given me. I've never met such an incredibly honest contractor. So in the end, my stairs were fixed superbly, my walls received extra structural support, I have a beautiful little closet and a recessed shelving unit, 2 other flights of stairs have been solidified, and I paid LESS than the original, extremely fair price we had agreed on in his initial estimate for just the one flight of stairs. Seriously, go with Don if you have carpentry work to be done - you won't regret it.
Description of Work: A flight of stairs leading from the second to the third floor of my home was repaired. This is an understatement, because I live in an oddly-built trinity and these stairs are, well, "special" - they curve and are supported by a single central slider, and a contractor had discovered that the slider was falling out of its insertion and was dangerously close to caving and causing imminent collapse of the whole flight of stairs. Don ensured that each stair was firmly inserted into the wall in addition to the central slider, thus providing dual support, and that the slider was hoisted back into place and well-secured. He also provided additional support to those stairs that needed it, managing both to preserve the aesethetics of the stairs and to restore their safety. While he was there, as I saw his excellent work, I asked him to do a bunch of other things in the house as well, including providing additional blocking to the structural support of my wall (that would soon be supporting drywall), fixing a second flight of stairs, and stopping the squeaking on a 3rd flight. I also had him create a closet for me.

I was completely impressed. We put this project off because it was a dirty, noise making project and my wife works from home alone. She felt completely comfortable with Don and he cleaned up every day after he was done. The work was higher quality than I expected or needed because we will carpet them but he said they needed to be that way in order to be safe. He also did a few other patch ceiling patches that we needed. Overall his final bill was under budget and a not so nice project was completed with very little inconvenience to my wife (she would have said so if there was). We will be having him back in a couple months to do the nursery and some closets. Brooks
Description of Work: My name is Brooks, I called a few contractors from Angies List and Don showed up to take measurements of all of our stairs (we live in a 5 story house with an open staircase). We needed the stairs closed in and Drywalled so that they would be safe for my wife (who is preganant and our future child). Don provided us a quote that week. After a couple weeks of debating we called Don and he came the next day to sign our contract and explain his work plan.

This was a lot easier than it could have been. Don gave me an estimate and advised that it was best to get other estimates. (He even gave me a competitor's name and number.) He was able to schedule the work within a week. It took a couple days, this is very exacting work, and then he cleaned up every last speck of sawdust before presenting the bill, which was below his estimate.
Description of Work: I had window frames and sills with serious, ugly wood rot. Don excised the damaged stuff and fit in perfect replacements, including molding milled to match. He blended and patched with epoxy filler.
