We do our best to provide top quality work while respecting your home. Once we start the job, we will continue working until your are satisfied with the results. I will stay in touch with your throughout the project to ensure that there are no problems. As you can see by the reviews here on Angie's List, not every job goes according to plan, so we are flexible and able to adapt to new situations quickly. We only use high quality paints and tools that will give your home the best look possible. I personally manage every job and make sure that my highly experienced employees are doing exactly what is expected. Owner-operated. No subs. Cost is determined by the job.
I contacted 3 different painting companies on Angie's list and Barry was the first to respond. He came out to survey our house immediately and sent us the estimate that night. The other companies took 1 week to come do the survey and I had to contact them after a week about the estimate. His team showed up on time, every morning for 4 days, from 9:30 to 4:00. They were friendly, professional and quick. All supplies were included in price and he gives you all receipts.
Description of Work: Painted and repaired walls in four bedrooms, dining room, laundry room, 14' high entry hallway, crown molding in hallway and up 3 flights of stairs, foyer and an additional hallway. Also repaired and painted a patch in our entry ceiling.

We contacted Mr. Bush after my grandson accidently broke our basement window while playing ball. Mr. Bush was very nice and explained that he was very busy but would get to window as soon as he could. We did have to wait for almost 2 months (which is what happens when someone is good) but our window is in and I really love it. Mr. Bush did keep in contact with us during our wait to give us updates as to when he coming to do the job.
Description of Work: Replaced broken basement window with a glass block window.

Estimate and quotation. Barry came the day after I telephoned to calculate a free estimate which was emailed to me that evening. He was punctual (even a few minutes early) and called ahead of the visit to confirm. More importantly, we had a newborn at home as well as other scheduling constraints and Barry, despite having tons of work backlogged, was extremely flexible in meeting our time availability. Simply scheduling the quote was representative of all of our subsequent experiences. He was punctual, always called ahead to confirm his arrival, and _always_ adjusted to fit our unique scheduling requirements. We did collect three different quotes. Barry offered the most competitive pricing, was personally present on the job site for the work, and was the most flexible with regards to scheduling (see below). Scheduling the actual work. We had a number of small jobs, none of which required a full-days labor and many of which required one or more intervening days to cure. Barry was extremely responsive to our desire to get the work done quickly and extremely sensitive to our newborn in the house. He creatively scheduled our jobs - coming by in the morning on his way to another job-site to get something started for us or stopping by in the afternoon when traveling between other larger jobs. Amidst an unseasonably rainy summer, he also took maximum advantage of the weather - doing our indoor work when rain showers delayed some of his other jobs. The work product itself. Barry was fast, efficient, ahead of schedule and under budget. He finished the work nearly a week ahead of schedule and was under his initial quote (less material). He was also extremely thoughtful, thorough, and creative in the work. On the plaster repair, he talked through several alternatives with us explaining the pros and cons of each approach and gave his opinion on what the best option was and why. In this instance, the physical dimensions of the closet where the plaster was crumbling made one approach more obvious than the others. On the weather-stripping, he not only thought of a novel approach to sealing the gaps in our circa 1840's doorway, but did so in a way that circumvented the expanding and contracting wood that rendered our own sad attempts ineffective. In sealing parts of the basement wall, he scraped and sealed far beyond the basement section that we had identified. There was really only a basement bathroom that we had explicitly discussed. Because he was scraping the wall anyway, in the interest of completeness, he actually cleaned and resealed the basement wall as far as he could go until the random assorted junk in our basement blocked his way. If we had not had boxes lining the walls, I suspect that he might have worked his way around the entire basement. Clean-up. Barry brought a portable shop vac and/or drop cloths (as appropriate for the particular tasks). He cleaned up after every visit (remember, he was coming into our home once or twice a day over several days) and only once left materials in preparation for the next visit - taking care to ask permission first. We could not have imagined a better experience and we would not hesitate to use Barry again or recommend him to anyone else.
Description of Work: Repair sections of basement drywall damaged by water seepage; scrape and seal portions of the basement drywall showing evidence of seepage; remount a sink in the basement; scrape out mold, and reseal around the bathtub; scrape and paint a rusted iron gate; spackle, sand, and primer crumbling plaster wall (due to settling); install weather stripping

Barry was in our home the previous week completing a number of small jobs. Among those jobs, Barry scraped and resealed a portion of our basement wall because of water seepage from heavy rains. After reflecting upon the work and seeing how nice the resealed portions looked, we decided to have the rest of the basement sealed. After moving our basement junk out of the way, we asked Barry to come back for an estimate on scraping and resealing the rest of the wall. First, Barry was honest, pointing out different parts of the bubbling on our basement walls and explaining which parts were due to seepage and which parts of cracking paint were due more to the fact that someone simply took latex paint and covered the basement cement; something that the paint is/was not meant for. He was essentially pointing out where/how we could save money because sealant was not required everywhere. Second, he let us know the different vendors from which he could acquire supplies and the possible limitation that supply availability could pose for our work. He called around and let us know later that evening when he could come in to complete the work. He came on time, calling ahead to confirm his arrival. He brought a partner with him and together, they finished the work faster than originally anticipated but did all that we hoped, including moving around the washer and dryer to get behind them (nothing could be done about the utility sink whose pipes were affixed to the wall and getting behind the water heater which was in an awkward position. The work was timely, on budget, and well executed. The experience was entirely in keeping with our prior relationship with Barry. We would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone. If you did not see an earlier report on our prior experience, it is worth reiterating: Barry is extremely responsive to the customer's needs - in our case, we had some very tight scheduling constraints. Despite a full order book, Barry made the time to accommodate our scheduling needs, he even had his own sick child at home to worry about.

It was a pleasure to work with Barry. His estimate was fair, and he stuck to it. He had an extremely professional crew to assist him, but he was on site everyday. He was responsive to any comments and suggestions that I had, and his "bedside manner" was terrific--he is quite aware of how disruptive it is to have your apartment interior painted, and he and his crew were utterly considerate. The clean-up went smoothly, and the work was completed in a timely manner. I will call Barry again when I need painting done!

Barry was responsive the moment we contacted him for a quote. He came over to look at our space and provided some helpful suggestions on how to improve the look. Once he left, it only took a couple of days before he submitted a quote. We worked with him to ensure that the paint colors we liked made sense with the space. While he is not a "color expert" he did a great job of making sure everything flowed nicely together. He offered to go to the paint store and pick out all the correct items needed for the job. Once he started all the work, he was true to his word and timing. He did not create a mess and was responsive to our feedback. He did not have any prior experience installing the tile but did a great job. The paint job was amazing...we still receive compliments to this day. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the door installation but Barry did not do this. I would recommend Barry to anyone looking to embark on a home improvement project. We also had 2 cats and he got along with them throughout the entire project. The bottom line is that if you want someone who easy to work with and will do a fantastic job to improve the value of your home - Barry is your guy. We will recommend him to anyone we know.
Description of Work: He painted the entire interior of our 2-bedroom condominium unit including stairwell and ceiling. He also installed dry wall in areas where we had water damage as well as some other areas that were unfinished by our builders. He installed brand new panel doors (painting these as well) and installed tile in some of our closets which were unfinished by our builders. Finally, he also applied sealant to our exposed brick.

I needed wallpaper removed from a wall. I had attempted it myself; however, it was a great challenge. I have no idea how long the paper has been on the wall but it was there when I moved in 18 years ago. I called Barry for an estimate and he was very accommodating in terms of scheduling. He emailed me the estimate within 24 hours and it was, by comparison, a reasonable estimate. Barry was again flexible in terms of scheduling the work. I was in no hurry so we were able to schedule to meet both of our needs. He arrived, with a partner and within 5 hours, the wallpaper was removed. In addition, they patched holes and cracks and pretty much prepared the room for my painting. I was very pleased with the outcome.
Description of Work: Removed wallpaper from a bedroom approximately 12'x17'.

We chose Barry because of his reputation and liked the fact that he is quite local to us and had dealt with old houses like this in the past. (One painter who gave us an estimate told us he had been painting for 20 years and had never seen this much molding ~ we knew he wasn't the man for the job). Barry certainly was not the least expensive estimate we received, but we felt most comfortable hiring him because of his reputation and professional demeanor. This was a LARGE job and I was clear that I wanted the molding to be prepped and sanded to a reasonable degree before being painted. Barry was responsive to concerns I had along the way about surfaces being sufficiently prepped. He is an excellent communicator and responded quickly to my frequent emails. Barry and his crew did a very nice job and we are extremely pleased with the overall results.
Description of Work: We have a one hundred year old, 3 story row home in West Philly with lots and lots of beautiful crown molding. However, the last paint job (done about a decade ago) was done hastily, with an unfortunate shade of paint that was glopped on. We were looking to have the living room, dining room, and second and third floor hallways and stairways (with all their intricate spindles) painted... walls and all the trim.

The job took 2 days. Barry took care of some extra things at no extra charge: before painting, there were a few minor blemishes on new walls in the kitchen that he took care of for us without a problem; he also painted a door and closet doors in the foyer because they needed sprucing up. We are very pleased with the finished product. Barry was very communicative throughout the whole process and was always easy to get a hold of. He went out of his way to make sure we as customers were happy.

Barry and his workers did a fantastic job! They were on time every day, communicated well with us throughout the work, and cleaned up nicely at the end of each day and the end of the project. The work was completed in a timely fashion and with no surprises.
Description of Work: Barry and his crew sanded, primed, and painted our dining room. What they really did was TRANSFORM our dining room from an ugly room--with dull, battleship-like blue paint on the beautiful wood trim--to a stunning space. The price for the job was more than fair in our minds, as it took them three full days of work to complete due to the fact that there is so much detailed, original wood work in this room. They also constructed some doors to give us more hidden storage space between the two radiators in the room, and replaced the radiator screens.
Everything went smoothly, from start to finish. Barry was very receptive to our requests, and was very honest about his ability, schedule, and fee. Barry and his team have some limitations, for instance they do not do any electrical or plumbing work, nor is their expertise in high-end finishing touches (which is why I rated them as a 'B' for quality), but they are great at the things they do, and are VERY reasonably priced. For the money, we are quite happy with the final product. If you want exquisite detail in your work, Barry may not be the best fit. But if you're looking for a quality job at a good price, Barry is recommended.
Description of Work: Barry and his team helped us with our basement remodeling. They hung and painted drywall, patched an exposed concrete wall, and installed a drop ceiling (both the frame and ceiling tiles, including custom shaping tiles to fit around pipes, faucets, etc).

We have worked with Barry on a couple of projects and both times he has done a great job start to finish. He has always showed up as scheduled for bid meetings, getting back to us promptly and his bids are always competitive. He is always punctual and completes his work within the time he says it will take. His work is consistently well done and thorough. He is pleasant, professional, and cleans up meticulously when he finishes the job. He has completed two major indoor painting and drywall jobs for us in the last couple of years and we will hire him for any painting, drywall, and small carpentry jobs that we undertake in the future.
Description of Work: Barry has worked with us on two major painting jobs both of which involved patching drywall or hanging new drywall. He painted and patched the walls and ceiling of our front stairway which has 12 foot ceilings. He has drywalled and painted two of our hallways. He also painted the third floor of our house including trim the job also included replacing water damaged drywall from the ceiling and patching and smoothing large expanses of old and deteriorated drywall. The rooms he worked on look like new.

We contracted with Barry to accomplish the tasks noted above in our small condo. We had selected a specialty metallic paint for an accent wall which required several coats. Barry was not happy with the outcome after only one coat of the specialty paint and returned to apply an additional coat after the initial coat had dried. Barry matched the woodwork paint perfectly and accomplished all jobs within the timeframe we had agreed to. His quotation was reasonable and he stayed within the quote given. He was on-time with not-only the job start, but also with completion. The overall quality of his work was excellent and we would recommend him without reservation. We were not living in Philadelphia at the time of the work, but we were able to be in contact with Barry by both telephone and email. His responses to our questions were always prompt and complete. We trusted him with key-access to the apartment and felt very comfortable in doing so.
Description of Work: Painting walls (not woodwork) of a 650 square foot apartment. Painting of marred window sills in Great Room to match existing woodwork. Installation of weatherstripping on a painted metal door, which required painting of weatherstripping. Installation of a dead bolt on metal door. Construction and painting of a cabinet within the existing pantry and installation of a lock on the cabinet.

I had a tremendous experience with this contractor. He responded within about 20 minutes of my sending the email requesting a quote, he came that day to look at the job, and he had the quote to me within 2 days. He was available quickly, and showed up exactly when he said he would. He and his employee finished the job in two days, when he thought it might take three. The work was done very well. The woodwork finally looks like it is supposed to look, the finish of the paint is lovely, and I couldn't be any happier. Barry and his employee worked continuously throughout the day, with only very short breaks for lunch. They were pleasant and didn't mind my constant checking on the work being done while they were doing it. Barry even did some extra repair work that neither of us had noticed when he was doing the estimate. I would recommend Barry to anyone. He is dependable, fair, and honest, plus his work is excellent. The only reason I rated his price as "good" rather than "exceptional" was that while his price was where I expected it to be, I had hoped for less (as we all do!).
Description of Work: My first floor (open floor plan) was painted--walls and woodwork. The crown molding, the door, and some other woodwork had many stains from knots coming through the paint, as it had obviously not been primed properly the first time it was painted. The woodwork was fixed, caulked, and painted. The walls were being painted a very dark color, which required two coats. One wall had some water damage that needed to be fixed.
