The job went very well. The workers showed up quite early most days and worked hard, in 95-degree heat. They were efficient and capable. Different workers were required for different aspects of the job, but all of them were more than competent and thorough. There was a one-day delay because rain was expected, but communication was good. First the roof was re-done, which took a couple of days because it is a huge job and required replacement of some rotten wood as well as the installation of the tiles, copper flashing in spots, and venting at the ridges. Then the sun-tube workers came, and spent about 2.5 days installing the sun tubes inside the house and making the cuts, etc., for them on the outside. At the end, we had a walk-through on Monday, June 22, and the Russell man who did it pointed out two more areas that needed to have flashing added on the roof. He told us someone would be coming by to do it, and they came the following Saturday morning to do it. They were not able to come before that because of the severe storm during the week, with electrical wires down, etc. When the two men came to do the last bit of flashing they were very efficient and completed the work in a couple of hours. We are ecstatic about our sun tubes, as they give us much-needed light in four rooms of the house during daylight hours.

Crew & project manager arrived at 7:30, worked hard till 5:20. Finished & cleaned up by noon. Two minor adjustments made without problem. Good quality work!

The actual roofing work went very smoothly. Vince, who assessed the extent of the work, was punctual and polite. He showed me photos of the areas that needed repair, which helped me understand the job proposal. The estimate he gave was accurate for the work that was needed. Tom and his assistant (whose name I was told but has slipped my memory) were also punctual, courteous, and fast when they did the work today. Tom showed me before and after photos of the work when they were done. He also told me that the photos would be e-mailed to me. HOWEVER, I would give the whole firm an A- for responsiveness. During the month between Vince's assessment and the repairs, we noticed some leaking inside the house which we weren't aware of before the assessment. I called the office and asked that Vince come by when he was in the area to double check that the proposed work plan was still accurate, considering the new information. He hadn't come by as of last week, when I received an e-mail from Russell, so I replied to the e-mail, reminding whoever sent it that I had asked them to send Vince by before the work was performed. When I was contacted yesterday, to let me know the workers would be coming today, the person who called me hadn't been told about my request. We arranged for Tom to come this morning to see the rooms where we had had leaks and to double check that the proposed job was still appropriate, so the issue was addressed, but I am disappointed that my earlier messages had not been communicated to Vince.

Not well, would NEVER use. From the moment the salesman was in my foyer we were told they believe in best practices, so we which is code for we only do new roofs.Was told in order to know how much a new roof would cost it would be a $250 fee or I would have to sit through a presentation to hear WHY i should choose Russell Roofing.... Said I was waiting on Bank approval, since it's a short sale, just really needed to know what I was getting into. I was told proposals take a lot of time, so basically they didn't want to earn my business. I'm very skeptical of they presentation approach ala a time share- not interested. I have purchased 3 roofs over they years and NEVER been treated so absurdly. I always try to get 3 bids- the end.

Vince from Russell Roofing came out to look at a damaged portion of gutter. A recent cleanout of leaves and other debris revealed a hole in the gutter. I needed it repaired. I also wanted a general idea of the status of the roof. Vince was prompt and very professional. He has been to the property before on another roofing issue. He indicated that the roof itself had reached its normal life which is easily 50 years and at some point should be replaced. I would agree with that. Then he inspected the gutter which just needed a simple metal patch. Rather than go through the process of generating a quote and a agreement to sign, he indicated it was a very simple repair which he did for free. I was very pleased with this outcome. Russell has been to another property of ours and has provided good advice there as well. For any future work I would definitely include Russell Roofing on my list and would hope to get Vince as the person to come out and do the estimating.

They were great. He came here and told me what was wrong and then he fixed it. He said it wasn't guaranteed. But, they were great. I liked them a lot. It was my sun room roof that was messed up and the water was coming in. It was only a part of the roof. It wasn't the whole roof. It was only a little part. They're honest.

Vince was scheduled at 11 but called at about 10:20am to see if I was available for an earlier visit. I was and it was very convenient for me. Vince inspected the gutter and fixed it for free, asking only that we display his Russell Roofing sign on the front lawn for a week or two. Fine with me. . Vince indicated he would provide me with an estimate for a new roof, coordinating any permits and local issues with roof shingle type as the property has some prominence and the roof is old. He also inspected some gutter down spouts in the back and had some good advice for me. Vince was very knowledgeable and professional. I was very pleased with his visit.

Marc and his crew arrived early on 3-11-15. He then took the time to explain what he and his men were going to do over the 3 days. He was very business minded and they worked diligently all three days.

We had a leak in the roof in November. Russell workers came promptly and diagnosed the problem. They were unable to get to the job until February because of a backlog of work and weather conditions. Luckily, the wind and rain did not result in a continuation of the leak in the meantime--they would have put a tarp in place, if necessary. They were very professional and were good about contacting us. They arrived to do the work promptly and cleaned up after themselves. They guarantee their work, so I know if there is a problem, they will take care of it.

They came when expected and did the work to my satisfaction.

The team arrived around 7:30 a.m. every day. They were polite, hard working and considerate. They seemed very knowledgeable. they did a great job with clean up and fixed the slates on the garage when I asked.

Leaking roof repaired by replacing valley shingles.

I was initially very impressed with Russell, and chose them over several other bidders, despite the fact that their bid was not the lowest. They seemed the most skilled and insightful of all the firms I contacted, and I was very pleased with their suggestion of using edge vents to properly ventilate my roof. All the other contractors wanted to cut through the large and handsome eaves of my old house, but this method would preserve the look of the house much better. In addition, they promised to do hand nailing all the shingles, which not only was less noisy but does less damage to the shingles. Many things went well with the installation. The slanted roof crew, mainly Czech workers, was skilled and friendly. I was grateful that they did not play loud music on radios while they worked, since I was at home much of the time. Only one of them really spoke English, which was occasionally an impediment to communication. The flat roof crew was a different bunch of guys, mainly American and I believe more permanent employees of the firm. They were also quite friendly. However, several things did not go well. The original estimator did not get up on a ladder and closely examine the roof edge and the old gutters (which I knew had not been well installed, and the water from them had done some damage to the soffit and crown molding). He did not notice that the crown molding behind the old gutters should probably just be removed to properly install the new gutters. As a result, the new gutters sort of just hang in the air - attached to the hangers which stick out from the roof, but with the gutter away from the edge and hanging under the edge, not placed against the edge of the roof to catch the water, which is what I had thought would happen. This is not bad in terms of water management, but it looks a little odd and unsightly. Furthermore, the now exposed wooden crown molding needed to be scraped, repaired, re-caulked and repainted. I ended up doing most of this work myself, as Russell was pretty clear they didn't do that sort of thing. (They did paint the woodwork on a small attic dormer on the back of the house which I couldn't reach - I am grateful for that.) I think if I had been able to discuss the situation more directly with the supervisor and with workers who spoke English, this could have been avoided. In fact, during the whole period we were trying to work out what to do about the gutters and crown molding, I got less and less communication from the job manager. At first he would call me back and come to the house to discuss the problems, but increasingly I just heard from him through the workers. He would call their cell phones, and I would find out what he said from them. I would say communication was a big problem here. I would have appreciated more direct supervision of the job, and certainly more communication. For instance, it turned out that a section of decorative roof on the front of the house, in between the second and first floors, needed new flashing. This had not been part of the original plan. I returned home that day to find bright copper flashing, like a great horizontal stripe, across the front of the house. This changes the look of the house very much. I understand that it was necessary, but I would have appreciated being contacted and the problem fully explained BEFORE they installed it, not afterwards. The small flat roof was well repaired and recovered with a new material that rolls out in strips, and then is cut and shaped to the surface. It is a great improvement over the old roof and the old rusting metal edges. However, I can't say I'm really pleased with the way the new roof looks, either. There are all sorts of odd edges and details to this section of the roof, and right now it looks kind of like a badly wrapped package. I had to have them re-do the flashing where it meets the wall, the first time was quite crooked. Additionally, there was the problem of the skylights. There were two, although I think the original estimator only really noticed one. The original estimate called for a fixed skylight over the master bedroom, not a venting one. When I read that, I immediately called and said the skylight needed to open, like the original. I was assured this would be corrected. But several months later, when the material for the job was delivered, they sent a fixed skylight. Again, I called this to their attention. This was a big problem, it turned out, as it took some time to get another one from Velux, the vendor. For over a month, just a large piece of plywood covered the hole, covered by a blue tarp. When the new venting skylight did arrive, it did not fit the aperture! Indeed it turned out they had never really measured the aperture. Apparently these skylights are standard sizes, and my old one had been a custom size. Ordering a new custom sized one would take too long and be too expensive, so I agreed to let them install the smaller one. They had to add unpainted two by fours around the edge of the inside of the frame to make it fit, which will require additional work by me to make look presentable from the interior. And then, the first time it rained, the skylight leaked! It was a slow leak, but steady. I called Russell immediately and they did send a man right out to investigate and cover the skylight again. It turned out it was a fault in the manufacturing of the skylight itself, as a subsequent visit from the Velux representative confirmed. Still it was more than a month before a new one was delivered and finally installed. Meanwhile there was another small skylight in the flat roof, this one 'fixed', not included in the original price, that had to be custom ordered and installed. This added to the price of the job, although Russell was quite embarrassed about the way all this had turned out, and they gave it to me at cost. The job was finally finished, about ten weeks after the work had started. I think Russell was aware that this job had not gone in a manner that was up to their standard. I really don't want to say bad things about the firm, as I believe on the whole they are a very good and responsible organization, but I felt I had to say clearly what had actually happened. The main part of the job, the shingles and flashing and vents, are fine and were well installed.

They were very easy to work with, very prompt and cleaned up after themselves.
