Russell provided an estimate for $69,000. I had the job done by Global Home Improvement for $34,000. The job that Global did was excellent, and was a better job than I was quoted by Russell. Russell had quoted using a membrane for my internal gutters, and Global used stainless steel. Global included blown-in insulation and a complete rebuilding of the intenal gutter system. Russell was vastly overpriced. This update is from November 11, 2015, to comment on the company response below. Global replaced the front and back built-in gutters IN THEIR ENTIRETY. The stainless steel pans are in excellent condition, as is the entire roof. I cannot say enough about how great Global was. Russell Roofing was simply overpriced and could not have done the quality job that Global did.
Description of Work: Russell provided an estimate for a standing seam metal roofing system for my home.

The two proposals were vastly different. Our proposal was to remove the built-in gutters with extensive carpentry and install half round aluminum gutters to get the water collection system off of the roof. If the other contractor used stainless steel to line the gutters; this is something we have never heard of in our more than 20 years and 16,000 customers. The reason is that stainless steel is very hard to solder. Even soldering experts would have a difficult time getting it right. They may be using something to connect the stainless pieces other then solder, like caulk, or adhesives, but that won’t last either. We have some of the most credentialed, national award winning, soldering experts that wouldn’t try soldering stainless steel to use in a gutter, not a good idea. About once a month we get a call into the office from someone that decided to go with another contractor to install their roof and now regrets their decision. Many people think that they can determine a contractor by price because we are all installing the same roofing products. It would be like getting a burger at McDonald’s or Morton’s Steakhouse. They’re both burgers, right? Do you expect them to be the same burger? We just want our proposals (and workmanship) to be the best long term solution so you don’t have to think about your roof the rest of your life. Please let us know if we can help with your future needs.

I have had a very positive experience with Russell Roofing. Very impressed with them. From the moment I called their offices, the receptionist was very nice and helpful. They were able to send someone right away to get me a quote. Sandy came exactly on time ... extremely punctual. He was very professional, knowledgeable, llstened to the concerns we had with our gutters. He was really great. I was very impressed. He emailed us a quote that same day. I have nothing bad to say about them or our experience. At this time we were still getting other quotes, but if all else being equal and other quotes will come out comparable, we would go with Russell Roofing. Very happy with the initial experience and interactions.
Description of Work: Received a quote to replace & repair our gutters, as well as, quote for a gutter guard/shield of some sort.

This Angie's List member has used our company before. Most of our business comes from our previous customers and their referrals. We know we are not the cheap guy, but in these tough economic times why take the risk on a contractor that may not do the job right? Then you pay twice. This job was over 30 feet high. OSHA requires scaffolding and harnesses for safety. So that is what we do. We are sure there are roofers out there that will dangle from a ladder to do this type of job. The state says that it is the homeowner’s responsibility to hire a contractor that is fully insured and is following safety protocols. If there is an accident, the state holds the homeowner liable for hiring a contractor that is fully insured. If the contractor is lying about their insurance or doesn’t have any, the liability is on the homeowner. Most homeowner's insurance plans do not cover contractors. Make sure you get a certificate of insurance from the contractor you plan to hire and call their insurance carrier to make sure they have insurance for the type of work they are proposing and that the policy is in place. At Russell Roofing, we have roofing insurance and riders for all types of roofing (including using torches). Insurance and safety are hidden ways that roofing contractors cut corners. Who do you want around your home, possessions, and family?

More expensive than other bids for the roof, but I am very happy with my new roof from Russell Roofing. My new roof has a 50-year warranty and I know it was put on right. Very good customer service team and I felt informed about the whole process. I tend to worry about having work done on my house, so I was happy to have everything explained to me and get a detailed scope of work proposal. Work supervisors took the time to visit the job afterwards and do final adjustments to the gutters.

Your roof was inspected by the shingle manufacturer to ensure that the roof "was put on right." We follow the manufacturer's specifications so there is no guessing or opinions. Once it is inspected and approved, the shingle manufacturer give a 25 year workmanship warranty (installation of the materials) and a 50 year, non-prorated material and labor warranty (the labor to replace the materials). Even the dumpster is included in the warranty. This is the best warranty in our trade and it is how we approach every job. We want to provide our customers the least amount of risk. Now you have a fully warranted roof, inspected by the manufacturer (so installation errors are covered for 25 years), and transferable to the next homeowner. The agent for the company was on time for the appointment as well as knowledgeable and professional. He did a thorough review of the areas / work involved. The estimate was returned in a timely manner but did not include one important aspect of the work requested. Most problematic was the dollar amount quoted. It was double (give or take 3% - 4%) that of the other three quotes we received, including the company that did the work.

Many times a homeowner makes their decision on price because they think that there are "minor differences." We don't know who the homeowner ultimately chose as their roofer but when a roofer is half the price of Russell Roofing, that roofer is cutting corners. We know that if a roofer is doing everything that Russell Roofing is doing, we are going to be roughly the same price. The first major difference is that most roofers in the U.S. don't have roofing insurance. They have carpenters or handyman's insurance. If an accident happens on the roof and they don't have roofers insurance, the homeowner is liable. If they don't have proper insurance, are they paying men "under the table"? Are they paying their taxes? Are they using any specifications to insure that you get a "workmanship" warranty that covers their installation? (See other comments for more details about warranties.) Have they been in business more than five years? In these difficult financial times, many roofers are desperate for work and are pricing themselves out of business thinking that the lowest bid will keep them working. At Russell Roofing we want to be your least amount of risk. We don't want to waste your time or your money. We use the best insurance, training, certifications, workers, warranties, and craftsmanship to protect you! Every week, we get stories from homeowners that thought they chose the right roofer and found out from day one, or week one, or six months, or two years, that they made a mistake and now have to replace their roof again. In these economic times, why take chances? "If It's Russell, It's Right, Guaranteed!"

They came and looked at the roof. They came back with a written estimate, samples/colors and insurance, references etc. They took a deposit on a credit card, if fact you could pay the whole thing on your credit card. it was broken into three payments. There was a foreman there every day and the person I did the agreement with came quite often and called to make sure everything went well. They cleaned up every day and left things neat on the weekend. On the final day, we did a walk around the entire yard and they vacuumed the attic. I sent in my final payment a week later, since everthing went well.
Description of Work: Complete new roof on a large home Make sure roofer is certified by the manufacturer of the roofing shingles. You can also get reviews there. Roofing shingles need to by manually hammered in not a power hammer. Roofer should only take the part of the roof off that they can replace in the same day so your house is not compromised. Make sure the roofing company cleans up every day as this roofer did. If you have items stored in your attic, the roofer or you should cover them in plastic and clean up at the end.

This was a large project. It was a re-roof with ventilation and skylights. This customer mentioned being certified by the manufacturer. This is a great way to protect your investment. Ask your roofing contractor, "What type of workmanship warranty do you offer?" This question separates the men from the boys! The manufacturers offer a 25 year workmanship warranty only available through the highest level of certification (and then installed right). Very few roofing contractors can offer this warranty but it is the best protection for the homeowner. Most roofing contractors don't even know that this type of warranty is available so ask to see it in writing. They will usually talk about a material and labor warranty or give a contractor's "workmanship warranty." A workmanship warranty coming from the shingle manufacturer guarantees that any installation errors are covered. Almost every roof that we look at fails because of an installation error. Buyer beware! The roofing trade is unregulated and in these times, the contractor will say anything for a quick buck.

My husband and I went to Angie's List to find a reputable roofer. We were aware of several companies that have done work in our area. We called 3, one of which was Russell for an estimate. One never called back, two gave estimates. Russell responded promptly and answered our preliminary questions on the phone before sending someone out to examine our house. We hadn't had a new roof done in almost twenty years and we have a large three story house. Sandy blew off some shingles and we knew we couldn't put it off any longer. Their representative came when promised and walked us through the process. Everything that he discussed proved to be very accurate and was not played to squeeze more money from us. When a change had to be made for the flashing to comply with the manufacturer guarantee, he upgraded the flashing without charging us more. Russell gave us time to absorb the cost (much different than 20 years ago as is all costs) without being intrusive. When we made our decision, and it was the right one, our stipulation was that we wanted it to be completed before Christmas and we needed financing. We could pay in two stages, one check before the job was begun and again after the job was finished with the rest being financed. They worked with my need to draw money that was best for me. Therefore both stipulations were accomplished even warning us of the caveat that weather could delay the job. That did happen one day, but the next day they were there early and worked past dusk. Everything was done to make sure that we were not left with open areas at the end of the day. I've seen houses with blue tarp hanging for days until the weather cleared. That did not happen with Russell. They worked only to the extent that they could secure the area on which they were working. Everything was cleaned up at the end of every day so we did not have debris building up. They even power blew our gutters that were filled with not only roof particles but also leaves and everything was cleared every day. They put tarp against the windows where they were working so I never felt that someone was looking through the window at me. The men were very respectful and pleasant and did not create a lot of extraneous noise and disturb the neighbors with loud talking or music. They let us know when our driveway would be blocked by their equipment so we did not have to be inconvenienced. Even when I was home alone, I felt perfectly save. While they were not the lower bid, the quality of the work and what they offered was worth the cost. My father always said that you get what you pay for. This was certainly the case. We are still getting compliments on our roof. My father never cut corners and I am glad that neither does Russell. They are a quality company and they stand by their word and their work. We have already recommended them to friends and would not hesitate to continue to do so or to have them do future work. Kudos to Russell!

Our asphalt shingle roof was old and beginning to crack and deteriorate. Called three roofers I found through Angie's List. Eric D. of Russell visited, inspected and gave us several options re: shingle selection and ventilation method. I was happy that they offered the CertainTeed Landmark shingles which were rated a Best Buy by Consumer Reports. Eric explained the process in depth with us and told us of two nearby homes that were shingled with the color we were leaning towards. He also offered us a choice to redeck which we took as our home is 80 years old. The job started on time with a crew of three. The workers were polite, clean and efficient. They worked extra long days due to the good cool weather. They finished completely in three days and cleaned up at the end of every day. Eric was knowledgeable and responsive throughout the process and made sure we got our warranty direct from CertainTeed. Roof looks great and we hope it lives up to it's 50 year warranty (although we won't likely be around if it does!)

I contacted Russell Roofing through the Angies List web site and received a call within an hour to set up an appointment for a free estimate. I met Dan Simpson a Project Manager for Russell he was on time, knowledgeable and ready to listen to my concerns. He climbed onto the roof to see what was going on, take some pictures and get some measurements. He told me that I could put another roof on top of the existing roof and it should be fine. I explained to Dan what I wanted to do, that I was interested in a complete removal of all existing roofing, flashing, gutters and downspouts. That I wanted to make sure that the attic was ventilated ( soffit vents are open & a ridge vent ) and that I was interested in the GAF roofing system and the Gold Pledge Warranty. He said that they could remove the plywood two feet up from the roof edge and install baffles to ensure air flow to the under side of the roof and check to make sure the soffit vents were open. With the GAF roof system they will install Weather Watch ice and water shield membrane, 30 lb. felt, starter shingles at all roof edges, install aluminum drip edge to all roof edges, double flash all wall tie-ins and chimney with ice and water shield and step flashing, form fitted aluminum vent collars with neoprene gasket, Snow Country Ridge Vent capped with ridge shingles, hand nail Timberline HD roof shingles, 6 inch gutters and 4 x 3 down spouts. I was most happy with the copper chimney flashing and gusset. They installed a 16 oz. copper gusset behind the chimney, cut a reglet into the chimney for a continuous counter flashing over the step flashing. Foreman Greg Grosso and his crew were professional and worked well together. My wife had commented how courteous and pleasant the men were. I got estimates from other contractors and explained what I was looking for, but Dan seemed to be the only listening since no other estimates included the extra work that I was looking to have done. I did have one extra, seems that there never were any soffit vents cut in when the previous owner had the house sided. The roof life expectancy would have be shortened without this ventilation. I would recommend Russell Roofing to anybody who wants the job done correctly, on time and on budget!

Thanks for your thorough review! The type of warranty this customer is talking about is a workmanship (installation) warranty from the shingle manufacturer. It is the best warranty in our trade. The shingle manufacturer comes out to inspect the newly installed roof to make sure it was installed according to their specifications. It is the best protection to make sure you have no out of pocket expenses for 25 years on the installation and 50 years (non-prorated) on the materials and labor to replace the materials. That warranty is also transferable to the next homeowner! Far less that one percent of the roofing contractors in the U.S. can offer this type of warranty from several manufacturers. The sales representative was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and personable. He took a lot of time to explain the process used by the company, the materials, etc. and did measurements from on the roof. We are glad to hear that you had a great experience with our company. We have yet to find a contractor that does what we do on a daily basis. When reviewing a proposal, it can be difficult to see what a contractor’s habits are. We are all installing roughly the same materials but when a roof fails, it’s almost always because of an installation issue. Fully insured, trained, certified, drug screened, and backgound checked employees are not going to be provided at the lowest price. At Russell Roofing, we strive everyday to be your contractor with the least amount of risk. When selecting a lower price, you will need to determine how much risk you are willing to take on. During the work of re-roofing one of the skylights was broken and needed to be replaced. Russell Roofing was notified and they offered satisfactory solutions to solve the issue. They had to order new Skylights which took a month or so. The new Skylights were installed and we are currently waiting to have the shades ordered and installed. Overall, although we had a couple of issues they were resolved immediately and in a friendly and mutually agreeable manner. The work appears to have been done properly as Hurricane Sandy DID NOT cause any visible leaks in the area where work was performed. Thank you for your review. It was difficult to determine how the old skylight broke. It was an 18-22 year old skylight so it may have just been worn out. When we did the roof, we may have cracked the glass during the roof installation. Because we could not determine the cause of the breakage, we tried to do the right thing. We furnished and installed the skylights (and the skylight blinds) at our cost. We appreciate our customers patience as we needed to order two new custom skylights. Thanks for your review. With a slate roof, there is a certain amount of maintenance involved. We recommend having an annual inspection of your roof (free of charge, of course). Please let us know if we can help in the future.

Thanks for your review. We noticed you said that one of the reasons you used us is our reputation. The majority of our customers found out about us through word of mouth. We do very little advertising. Now you have a fully warranted roof. That's why we say, "If It's Russell, It's Right, Guaranteed!"

Russell was great about getting someone out to give me an estimate for the work, then their guys came for the day and installed the skylight on the day they promised. The two workers were professional, hard working, and quite pleasant, and I was happy to tip them for a hard day's work. Although I've had the skylight installed for only a month or so, the work looks good to me. I felt the price was a bit high but I was willing to pay more for quality work. Then the guys told me that they didn't have time to fix the raised shingles and that Tom Hartley would follow up with me to get that taken care of. That evening, one of the workers called me to tell me that they had forgotten to install the handle mechanism that allows me to open and close the skylight and that he would drop by the next day. Initially, I felt frustrated because Tom did not return my calls or e-mails as quickly as I would have preferred regarding the skylight handle and the raised shingles. We spoke today and he told me that they were planning to fix the shingles at no extra cost to me because that's the way they like to treat good customers. I believe him and appreciate this. We figured out that I had failed to tell him that the work was urgent because my insurance company was pressuring me to get the work done. Tom was thinking that they would drop by when they had time. We spoke today and cleared up our misunderstandings. Hopefully I will have a repaired roof by the end of the week and a happy insurance company. I'll update this review during the weekend to confirm all work complete! The one B rating is because I would have preferred responses to my e-mails in a more timely manner.
Description of Work: Russell installed one skylight for me in a bathroom. I am expecting them to fix a few shingles near the skylight before the end of this week.

When doing any type of construction project, there are times when something doesn't go as planned. The mark of a good contractor is how they make things right when something doesn't go right. There was a communication issue with this project, as soon as we found out about it, we jumped into action to make things right. We are happy to report that the shingles were repaired and this customer received the crank handle for their new skylight. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.

I engaged Russell Roofing to provide proposals for replacing 2 skylights in my kitchen and replacing the asphalt roof on my entire home. I wanted to install 30-year GAF Timberline shingles on the roof with a GAF Cobra Fascia vent. The roofing proposal from Russell Roofing inexplicably had a price more than twice that I had from two other roofers for the same roof. I chose one of the other certified GAF roofers. The roof was installed by the other contractor to my satisfaction and passed the GAF inspection. I did, however, accept Russell Roofing's proposal to replace my two kitchen skylights with custom Velux skylights primarily because they promoted themselves as a 5-star Velux Skylight Specialist. Within one year after installation, one of the glass Velux skylights cracked. This defect occurred during the warranty period, which is 10 years. On January 16, 2012 I called Russell Roofing and reported this defect to Mr. Tom Hartley. On February 10, 2012 Mr. Hartley informed me that they came to my home and checked the skylight, verified the crack, and they would submit the warranty claim to Velux. He told me at the time that it could take 2-3 months to replace the skylight. He never contacted me again after that message. On September 10, 2012 I called Tom Hartley to inquire about my replacement skylight. He claimed the he was unaware that nothing was done. In my opinion he failed to follow up with me and demonstrated a lack of accountability to manage my warranty claim. He again stated he would follow up with Velux and get back to me. After 11 days I still had not heard from Tom Hartley so I called him. He then informed me that Velux was not going to replace the defective skylight under warranty stating their claim was that someone removed the skylight when my new roof was installed. I asked Mr. Hartley why it took him nearly 8 months to resolve this issue and why he never contacted me. He claimed he did. He claimed he left me messages on my phone. I told him I never received any of those messages. Then he started to claim there was something wrong with my contact number or that he didn't have the right number. To me, it demonstrated an active avoidance to confront me. My telephone number is listed on the Skylight proposal written my Russell Roofing as is my mailing address. Russell Roofing also had my email address so Mr. Hartley had several ways to contact me regarding this issue yet he failed to follow up effectively and he let 8 months elapse since I first contacted him. Furthermore, Russell Roofing was also aware that I was going with another roofing contractor but they did not advise me that if the skylights are moved during roof installation then that would void the warranty. This, I believe, is a significant fact that a 5-star Velux Skylight Specialist should know. (Incidentlly, I have no evidence that the skylights were moved during the installation of my new roof.) If Mr. Hartley had advised me that installing a new roof after skylight installation would void the warranty on the latter, then I would have installed the skylights after the roof. He did not provide that advice but he did want to charge me for installing the replaced skylight at my cost. In my opinion, this is either a question of competence or business ethics. Neither of which is favorable towards Russell Roofing or Mr. Hartley.
Description of Work: Russell Roofing installed 2 Velux custom skylights in my kitchen and performed some minor carpentry work on the french doors in my kitchen.

Russell Roofing contracted with this customer on 8/17/10 to replace two skylights. The contract value was $3,000 for two custom sized Velux skylights. He gave Russell Roofing a $1,000 deposit dated 8/17/10. The contracted work was performed and the customer paid in full on 5/4/11. In response to the customer's report of the cracked skylight, a Russell Roofing technician was dispatched to inspect the crack. He found new roofing material installed which meant that another roofing contractor had handled the skylights. Also, the manufacturer, Velux, was notified of the cracked skylight. Sometime after Russell Roofing had installed the new skylights, the customer hired another roofing contractor to replace his roof. During that installation, the roofing contractor removed the two skylights (which is required with this version of custom skylights) to put new roofing material under the skylights. That roofing contractor was the last one to handle the skylights. We communicated with the customer that the cracked skylight would not be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty because another contractor had handled the skylight. We also had the manufacturer’s representative call the homeowner to tell him the same thing. There was no warranty provided by Russell Roofing for the installation of the skylights since we did not do the roof (we cannot offer any leak-free guarantee because the roof around it was not replaced at the time). There was a warranty provided by Velux for the product itself. That warranty covers any material defects but it does not cover mishandling or mis-installation by another contractor. Our recommendation was, and is, to have his roofing contractor pay to replace the damage they did or open a homeowner’s insurance claim for the damaged skylight. Russell Roofing does warranty work with Velux and gets paid by Velux to do repairs and replacements when there are manufacturing defects. Velux has the best warranties in the skylight industry and routinely backs their warranties. They will not replace a skylight due to mishandling or mis-installation by another contractor. Russell Roofing and Velux would be happy to replace the customer's damaged skylight, but not for free of charge.
