The Zooks arrived with scaffolding and all materials needed. They worked from the outside and inside. The impressive aspect of the work is that the one original sill had rotted out completely. They arrived with a large solid oak sill that fit perfectly and duplicated what existed in 1804. Who else does this! As is always the case, when the work was finished, they cleaned all up debris that was created in executing the project. Ken Zook and his crew have the expertise to repair and replace what is needed for historic properties. They have good knowledge of old-time construction and repair procedures.
Description of Work: Removed two badly damaged windows from the 2nd floor of an 1804 stone farmhouse and replaced them with high-quality replacement windows to match exactly the ones removed

Description of Work: We've had Ken Zook and his men complete a number of projects for us.... shingle a large storage shed, put metallic roofs on both our farmhouse and its front porch, insulate our satellite business office, and replace a large double cellar door. Replace ornamental woodwork destroyed after an ice storm destroyed the back of the house roof. I never thought they'd be able to replicate the Victorian trim. Zook's estimates have been accurate. The work could not have been better. They work on a project until it's done, regardless of the hour. And the work is so neatly done, there's never any kind of clean-up effort on the part of the owner. I wouldn't have anybody else do work for us.

The work was done quickly and well, and even came in lower than the estimate. They cleaned up after themselves so well that there were no signs of work having been done, except for the new roof and repairs. Ken was a pleasure to work with from the initial call to the final contact.
Description of Work: My back porch roof came down due to weight of snow and ice this winter. They put up a new porch roof, sealed off the exposed eaves of the house, replaced damaged siding, and installed a new porch light.

The jobs were completed in a surprisingly short time (about three days for each job) and more than met our expectations--in all regards. When the Zooks start a job, they don't stop until it's finished, and they clean up EVERYTHING to the degree you'd never know anything had occurred at the site. This actuality struck me when they replaced half the farmhouse roof about a year ago, pulling out hundreds of nails and replacing a large number 200-year-old wooden supports. When the job was finished, there wasn't a nail, splinter of wood, etc. in the yard....not even any sawdust. The same was true after the front porch roof had been replaced. And, again, this was the case with all the interior work that had been done inside the shed. Additionally, the shed insulation was so well done that we have been able to keep the temperature inside at around 68 degrees on the very cold and windy days experienced during the past three weeks by use of a single $38 Polarius oil-filled radiator (space heater). Ken Zook, who heads the roofing business, has a great deal of integrity which, these days, is a rare commodity. You can trust his word and his work.
Description of Work: We engaged Zook's Roofing team to do two unrelated jobs within a short time. The first was repair of an old farmhouse front porch roof that needed a great deal of structural rebuilding and new roofing shingles--and new rain gutters. Soon thereafter, we purchased a 10 x 16 shed that we wanted to use as more than a regular shed, so Zook's was again engaged to put heavy insulation on all interior walls and under the roof. Because of structural elements, the under-roof insulation required considerable maneurering to complete the task. Additionally, we wanted peg-board to cover the interior walls to give more of an aesthetically pleasing "finished look."

The whole experience, start to finish was terrific! He and his crew not only did good work, but when you feel you can trust the folks working on your property your mind can be at rest. Dan did what he said he would do; he kept us posted on when he was coming, and while he was here he made sure we knew what he was doing. While here he also spoke to us in a no-pressure way about our 14 year old roof. The guy is pleasant civilzed and competent plus he does conscientious work. You can't beat that combination. After the winter we definately plan to have him back to do some other improvements.
Description of Work: Our first business was having our shed reshingled. Then we asked him to fix up the rotting shed door - replacing wood trim, etc. Then we asked about painting the door and, while he was at it, the whole shed. Then we asked him to put a short grab bar on the house near the front door.

Mr. Zook's son and a helper came within days of the phone call to inform us of the costs and particulars of the building material. To allow for expansion, the plastic-like door boarding would be in the form of individual tongue-and-groove boards, as opposed to a large sheet of material--like a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Moreover, this was to be a double-door arrangement.. There was considerable work to the project and the two men labored several days. The final price was $1900, which was in the range of expectation. The entranceway doors were completed better than we envisioned. The workmanship is exceedingly impressive. The doors are heavy, because of the product used, but for security, nothing could have worked out better. We are totally pleased with the completed project.
Description of Work: Based on the exemplary work Zook's had done with difficult roof repairs several months earlier, I called to request a custom cellar (double) door be constructed, as the old one needed replacement. And we wanted a better design than the one being replaced. The cellar entrance is to a very old house so that nothing is straight, even, or plumb! The work required a carpenter with experience and good judgement. It would not be an easy task as we wanted that wood-lookimg plastic of the highest grade, which is both expensive and heavy! Mr. Zook phoned to state that the materials would be at least $800 and labor would be around the same. Accordingly, we were looking to pay $1600 or more. It would be a labor-intensive and exacting job.

As soon as much of the snow had melted, perhaps a week or so later, Mr. Zook's son and a helper arrived to begin the repairs. The ornamental woodwork and its underlying supports were taken back to the Zook farm for repairs. Much had to be replaced. The men showed up on a Monday morning and by mid-day Wednesday, all work was completed. We were astonished. Looking at the finished job, you would never believe how extensively damaged the roof, etc. had been. The ornamental woodwork shows no signs of repair or replacement., and every other aspect of Zook's work is so much better than we had a right to expect. We were pleased in all regards. Kenneth Zook had given us an estimate of $5400. When the bill arrived, the total came to $5400. That's as good as it gets.
Description of Work: The major snowstorms in March kept piling snow on our roof until the weight caused it to migrate over the snow-catchers and cascade over the back edge of our house, taking with the spouting, soffit, extensive ornamental woodwork, and wooden under-supports for the roof. The damage was major and really troubling, especially in regard to the ornamental woodworking that defines the character of the dwelling, which itself dates from 1804. Over 20 of the ornamental inverted wooden crosses were broken off. Based on several recommendations, we called Kenneth Zook to check out the extent of the damage and give us an estimate that we could submit to State Farm insurance Co. Mr. Zook came within a couple days for an overview of the repairs necessary. As there was a great deal of snow all over the broken-off portion of the back roof and pieces of the 200-year-old woodwork lying all around, much of it buried in snow, he said he'd check it again soon and submit an estimate to me for insurance purposes. In about a week the estimate was received my mail. It was in the amount of $5400, which I personally thought was reasonable in view of the damage. The estimate included about 60 feet of spounting, down-spouting, and all necessary hangers and supports.
