The sales rep who came to the house was friendly and professional, listened to our concerns and responded appropriately. We then had someone come out to test for lead in the paint around the windows to be replaced (Another useless EPA regulation with no purpose other than to make American's lives miserable). He was also courteous and professional. Next the men came to measure all the window openings, again very pleasant. The installation process was very impressive, timely, efficient, and very patient with me when I looked over their shoulders. All told, I couldn't have asked for a better experience, and the price was much better than the two other estimates that we had received.

Even though we had postponed the install date by a couple weeks due to travel plans, ThermoTwin was still fabricating some of them the day of installation, which surpised us (and the installation workers from the company). The issues had to do with ThermoTwin's lack of quality control. The French doors did not match, in that two very different inserts were in them (inserts being the part of the unit that houses/frames retractable blinds in between the panes of glass). One had the controls on a vertical edge, the other had the control at the top horizontal edge, which I couln't even reach. They had already taken out all our old doors, so we had to "accept" mismatched ones, at least temporarily. They wanted payment in full while we waited a few weeks for a replacement to one of the pair. We balked. Ended up talking with management on the phone, as well as our salesman, and worked out a 50% payment of "balance due upon installation" compromise. Another issue was our shock that the blind inserts in the French doors did not match the door color. We were suddenly told they couldn't match. The frames (not just the blinds, as we'd been told by the salesman) had to be white (our doors were almond). We feel we wasted the overcharge for having the doors factory-painted in that now we still have to paint them ourselves if we want a uniform look. We'd suggest watching and double-checking any work done by ThermoTwin very carefully before installers leave your home (there were four on this job). We had one "completed" door that we found to be rubbing against its jamb so much that it had to be adjusted. The installer for that door had to have noticed, but chose to disregard. Despite all these problems, the Sales Manage called us the next morning and said she understood everything was "excellent." It took several more phone calls and about two weeks before the replacement door was installed, which took up another afternoon of our time. We did have one very positive impression of ThermoTwin: Installer Jim Meyer knows this work inside out and does an absolutely superb job on the products and tasks for which he is responsible.

Thermo Twin's installation team was a disaster! They treated my job as if it were unimportant to them, sending out incompetent installers and not notifying us when they were coming to the house to work. Specifically, they measured a board on the back of my house and told me that my house was sinking. For four weeks, we thought that we had a major structural problem and found out that they measured a board installed with the demolished deck. They also refused to honor the contract by not installing skirting by telling me that that would be extra. Additionally, they installed the wrong color of shingles and refused to correct the problem. My advice to any potential customer is to give your business to a reputable contractor that can handle this type of work in a responsible way.

The salesman came to our house, gave us their pitch, and convinced us he was giving us a great deal, but we found out later the windows were incredibly overpriced. That was on us. When they came to install they brought the wrong size windows, so they had to reschedule for a date 2 weeks in the future. The only problem was we had already moved all the furniture to make room for the windows, and I had to take a second vacation day for their mistake.I asked for a price concession due to this and they wouldn't give me one. Pretty stupid on their part considering all the windows in our house needed to be redone. Needless to say we'll be going to one of their competitors for the rest of the windows. They will send a salesman in that will try to pressure you, but price these guys against the competition and you will see how high their prices are. It's one thing if you charge high prices but offer great service- these guys do not.

Overall, the company is fantastic during the sales, and installation phases of the project. They were the only siding company that allowed me to actually chose my own siding (after much personal research). The prices were on par or slightly better that what I recieved in product and services. The installation technitions were excellent and very skilled. However, the after sale problem resolution process was by far the worst that I have ever experienced. They eventually corrected the problem, but after a multitude of calls and service visits. Even for minor issues.

From the sales presentation/quoting to the clean up, everything was perfect. There were several windows that posed challenges, and the installers were able to get the entire job done on time. The installers were extremely polite and professional, and when they were done you could not tell they were here. The windows are the source of many compliments. Highly recommend.

I was very happy with the work they did. I didn’t care all that much for their salesman. There were a couple of changes that I decided to have done after they put it on, but I had to continually call them back to correct it. He was a very nice guy, but I had to call him back a few times. They were less expensive than another company which was my second choice. The windows put in by Thermo-Twin aren’t quite as energy efficient as the ones that the other company had. They are competitive and a little cheaper, but their product isn’t quite as highly rated from an energy efficiency perspective as the nearest competitor. They did the job while I wasn’t here. I allowed them access to my house. They also cleaned up very nicely when they were done. I am going to use them again to put on some stairs.

The entire process culminated with a phone call from the CEO, Joe Palermo. He claimed not to know of an offer made by the representative to pay 'half the fee' of a third-party friend of the sales rep. Buyer beware. At one point in talking to a secretary, I asked if this was uncommon (the run around, unresponsiveness etc.) Her comment was "I wish". I said that it sounds like this is not a nice place to work. Her comment.. "at least its Friday". When the first install team showed up with the wood casement windows I thought they looked great. It was cold, late January and we needed to get them in!! The house was freezing because when we removed the sash weights, you could see daylight around the old vinyl replacements. No sooner than they had moved all 8 units to the third floor, the foreman came to me and said the were leaving. They believed that the hardboard siding needed testing as it could be hazardous. No one returned my follow-up calls for two weeks. The siding sample was never tested. What was frustrating to me was that I had raised this concern with sales rep and both of the measurement reps (who, unlike the sales rep, knew the installation process and terminology.) I did eventually get a call from the sales rep with the aforementioned offer to 'split the cost' with me for someone to remove the 'hazardous' siding. I was reluctant. I requested a refund in exchange for their windows back. He said they were custom windows and that they could not be returned. I said that I did not buy custom windows, that I had a contract for a fixed price contract that involved custom windows. He admitted that they have been in business for a very long time and that their attorney would be reworking the contract for future transactions! As my heating bills were soaring, I agreed to meet with his contractor friend. The sales rep claims he 'drove by' the house and 'he'll do the job'. I said that I needed a contract explaining my liability, a scope of work and an assurance that this third party had appropriate insurance etc. I also requested a written statement from Thermo Twin explaining their role in the project, payment arrangements and any limitations this may place on their product warranty. He said... of course. Just pay his friend and they'll deduct it from the balance of the job for which I owed Thermo Twin upon completion. I said that I need something in writing first. More weeks went by. More heating bills. More frustration as I did my research. I am not wrong, but it would cost me to find an advocate to represent my interests. Finally a call came from the sales rep. He didn't remember agreeing to put anything in writing and he told me to call the CEO. He said if I find someone else to cut the rough opening, they will schedule the job. But they would not put a rush on it.. a concession I felt they could at the very least make to limit the extreme exposure to the winter cold. I did find someone to do the job. Licensed and insured, significantly more money than the amount that I was to pay the sales rep's unlicensed contractor friend. No call back. I called again. Finally after another two weeks I got a call from an operating vice president at the company. He said he would pay my out of pocket expense, that I should respond to an email he would send me with a copy of the contractor's invoice. No email... two days go by. When I called again I got more run around. I had been waiting on hold for quite some time and told the secretary that I was prepared to wait as long as it takes. This operating vice president finally picked up the phone. He explained that the CEO said he was not going to honor this arrangement. I asked that the CEO call me then. Another day or so passed. I called the CEO. He called me back and said he new nothing of the agreement. I told him that he is holding customers hostage. That he should consider his reputation. I am thankful for Angie's List and social media. My advice is "BUYER BEWARE". He ended up to agreeing to discount my final bill by the amount that his sales rep initially offered me for his 'contractor friend'... but not the amount I paid to a licensed and insured (Angie's List) professional. It is a good product, but this company is dishonest. They don't stand on their word, or their contract. They should reimburse half my heating bill for the past 5 months and the balance I paid to the properly licensed third party contractor.
Description of Work: In short, the job was the removal of old replacement vinyl windows and replace them with new wood windows sized for the rough opening of the original c1850 double hungs with sash boxes. I removed original sash boxes and weights prior to final measurement. The contract signed was for 8 identical wood casements installed in the original rough opening, extend jams to finished plaster. I would complete final trim with original casing. Thermo-Twin was responsible for the exterior finish on the project. The contract was for the entire project, fixed price with no options. Two visits were made (post sale) by measurement professionals. On the first visit (December 2010) just after the sale was made that November, I had removed the trim (that would be salvaged) for the rep to inspect and measure. This was per the instruction of the sales rep. The measurement rep said he was not comfortable applying this measurement to all 8 windows. A discussion followed on what they would need, and how they would finish the exterior. The hardboard siding under the exterior vinyl siding was visible from inside the house. This company would later take issue with this (detailed below). A different rep returned a few weeks later, once I had removed the rest of the trim and sash boxes/weights. He also assured me that there would be no problem with the exterior finish, even with the hardboard siding and harsh winter (late January/February.) I was concerned as I did not want a problem in the dead of winter.. not only is it an old house, but I have two very young children! This was the beginning of a four month nightmare involving the unresponsive and, at times belligerent, sales rep. We live in a neighborhood where several older homes have the old-style hardboard shingle siding. That story follows below. The good news is that once I personally sourced and paid for third party contractors, the job was finished well. The quality of the window was on par with many leading brands. And the installation team performed a dirty, but adequate job. Again the quality of the windows themselves is very good.

Overall the entire experience was very good, the prices were fair, (i had a number of estimates). The windows were in my opinion, the best value around. The installers were First Class, (THEY WERE NOT SUBS), they laid down drop clothes where they were working, and in the path from the windows to the door. I was very pleased with the value and the service.

The installation and workmanship was excellent. Work was performed on time with no surprises. Quality of the product is excellent - and the company is local. Sales team uses unusual tactic of forcing you to sign the day they offer the price. The only reason I went with them was that they were the fourth company that I interviewed and their price matched my lowest - and they are a local firm making the product in Pittsburgh. I did not care much for the sales person's tactic of bad mouthing all of the other firm's and their products. They were the only firm that had that approach and the sales person was arrogant - but I was done interviewing and wanted to make a decision. Their warranty is not as good as other company's but I only had one problem with one of the window's and it was addressed free of charge. I recommended the firm to one other neighbor and they did not pursue them because of the arrogance of the sales person - they tried the same approach with him (arrogant and bad mouthing other company's) and he declined to work with them and I felt bad that I recommended them - I would not buy their product as a result and would not recommend them even though I thought the product was good - although I think most newer windows you buy are good products and I would have been happy with any of the higher end products from any of the other three companies I interviewed.

The estimate was outrageous around $11,500 (almost twice as high as the estimate we got from another window company for approx the same window), & one big sales pitch (If we commited "today" he would give us a lower price). When he left, we were both clear that they were reaching right in the pockets of the consumer to take the rebate money for themselves. We hired another company who honored their original price (given before window rebate program started) & didn't call this company back. Steer clear!

Overall, these guys left me with a sour taste in my mouth. If over-priced windows with a side of attitude and sales gimmicks is your thing, then Thermo-Twin is the company for you!
Description of Work: I called Thermo-Twin for an estimate for (11) replacement vinyl windows and a sliding glass door. They came in with the highest price of anyone ($9500), and their salesman was jerky - he refused to give me a price for labor. Then the main office followed up with a pushy/condescending phone call a couple of days later. They assured me that they offered me "a really good deal" and tried to get me to agree to a contract on the spot. I felt like I was talking to a stereotypical used car dealer...

They huge and advertise like crazy, but they were awful! . I had to pay another company $900 to fix the header. They just made the opening bigger, and didn’t take the time to construct the header correctly. They didn’t frame it properly. The customer service was horrible. When they came to put the door in, they didn’t have a lockset. They just cut a piece of wood to put behind it. I have a statement from the contractor, to fix the header and what he found when he opened up the wall, to see it wasn’t constructed properly. They were really rude.

Initially I tried to arrange service through the sales representative through whom we purchased the original replacement windows. Communication with this representative, who was reporting to the office almost daily, was poor as he did not return calls and messages left on his voice mail. After repeated calls were not returned, I called the repair department directly and spoke with a very courteous, knowledgeable supervisor. A serviceman arrived on time on the scheduled day. He discussed all of my concerns with me, none of which were serious problems, and did his own additional checks. Along with the repairs,I requested some additional changes which resulted in a very fair price charge for the additional work. After the replacement glass and additional material were ready in their manufacturing plant, I was called by a very courteous representative of their service department to notify me that all of the material was ready to be installed and an appointment was scheduled. Two service technicians arrived on time with needed material to complete all of the repairs and additional changes. They covered carpeting and furniture in the work area and were very respectful of our home. All of the work proceeded very well and was completed on time. I will request these same technicians to do any future needed repairs. This is the first instance where any service was needed concerning the windows that were installed by Thermo-twin. The management is very committed to providing excellent customer service and providing excellent repair service for their products whenever it may be needed.
Description of Work: Approximately nine years ago Thermo-twin had replaced twenty year old double hung windows installed by the home builder when our home was built. Their initial window replacement went smoothly. One of the seals for the insulated panels leaked and needed to be replaced along with some hardware items and exterior seals.
