Description of Work: I met with Mr. Aldon Zove to discuss potential fixes for an old pond and a fountain on our property. He was very punctual and professional - we spent about 45 minutes walking the property and discussing options. He did not pull any punches and was honest about the costs and complexity of our situation. I appreciated his honesty and help me make a decision to do it right the first time. He had intuitive insights about what would work best for our property even after just seeing it. We decided to shelf any major landscape work for this year as the house itself is also undergoing renovations - but we will be back and will use Cedar Run Landscape.

We did not use them, but the guy came out. He was really great. He seemed professional, very punctual and gave us a good estimate. He was very easy to work with. The price was very reasonable. We ended up not going towards that because we didn't want to do landscaping during the winter and had some other things going on. We might be moving in March so we decided to postpone that project. We didn't actually get to use him, but from what we engaged him for, he was really great. We are going to move to a new house in March and it has some landscaping work that needs done and we have it in our mind that he will be the first person that we would call in spring time.
Description of Work: We had an estimate from Cedar Run Landscapes in October or November. It was to redo some pavers and some lawn stuffs.

A few days after contacting the company, we met with Alden Zove who helped us finalize the design we wanted. It was more expensive than I expected. His crew started work the following Monday, and were finished in 4 days. They cleared away the plants that I wanted to save, then dug the pond 24 " deep and shallow path for the stream, laid 2 layers of liner, installed the waterfall at the head of the stream area, and a filter in the pond, with the water-return pipe underground. Then they carefully arranged rocks of various sizes around the edges, with smaller rocks in the stream bed. A heater for the pond and several LED lights were also installed, along with a timer. The crew finally replanted the plants they had removed, and covered the ground around the area with mulch. They did a beautiful job.
Description of Work: They installed a waterfall, 12' stream, and a 6' x 8' pond.

The owner came over and I explained that I wanted to remove all my mulch and replace it with compost. He recommended pine needles which would offer a better look with similiar benefits. Cedar is one of the few landscapers in the area that offer pine needles. He went out to the truck and came back with a quote a few minutes later. It was a bit more expensive than other providers, but I appreciated his professionalism and his suggestions. Since I called him in the late spring, they already had a number of jobs scheduled. So he said they would try and fit me in mid June. However, they were able to come out early and get it done in the begining of June. They removed much of the mulch, although it was fairly well embedded. They did a good job of edging the beds and putting down the pine needles. I hope to use them again and build up a nice layer of pine needles over the years. I would recommend Cedar Landscaping. They are a bit more expensive than other providers, but are professional and perform high quality work. It is worth the extra money.
Description of Work: Cedar Landscaping did some work on my garden beds. They removed much of the wood based black mulch that I had and replaced it with pine needles (I'm attempting to go more organic in my lawn). They also edged the beds and removed some weeds.

They are the best of any landscapers we've ever had. We've had MANY. The crew is courteous, friendly, and quiet. I don't even know they had been there. They go in areas I wouldn't except, under the roof, bushes, etc. They have sent thank you letters. They are an excellent crew and go above and beyond what I ask for. I will keep using them and highly recommend them to others.

It's probably pretty obvious, since we've had them for over 25 years, that we find their work to be impeccable and superb. The owner, Alden, is a consummate professional and a man of his word. He is also very creative, so you're able to say you want to fix an area up and he'll come up with 3 or 4 different designs to choose one or work from there to create another one. As a testimony to the kind of business and operation, he has people on his crew that are long time employees so you see the same people year after year. This speaks to his stability and his management skills. This is also very nice because there are people that have done the same work for us year after year.
Description of Work: We continue to use them for hardscaping and landscaping. We have used them since 1990. They are our landscaper, they do everything for us. When we decorate our house at Christmas they decorate it for us.

We initially just wanted to install a new patio off of our sun porch. When Alden came out, he immediately saw we had a major water problem in the back yard. We met on three occasions to discuss options for the back yard and patio area. He was professional, thorough and always prepared. The crew, led by Curtis, were also very professional, courteous and talented. They removed the bottom wall and hand placed each stone to rebuild it. They leveled my daughter's playset and laid woodchips around it, giving her a wonderful play area. They removed an old patio, leveled the ground and created a walkway to the new patio on the side of our house. The stones were cut on site and, again, laid by hand. My neighbors kept commenting about how professional they appeared, even on the hottest days of August. They removed all debris and swept the driveway clear EVERYDAY. I am thrilled with the outcome and look forward to working with them again. I cannot say enough great things about this company.

We agreed to pay the extremely high costs for Cedar Run, expecting better than average service. Alden Zove seems to be extremely knowledgeable and led us to believe we'd get the best possible service. However, his team did not work carefully and cut through our expensive irrigation system! Alden reluctantly agreed to pay for the damage ($500) and was clearly agitated (with us!) that it happened. He implied that we didn't inform him of the irrigation system, when we actually did discuss it. Over the course of the summer, Cedar Run did come back to spray the weeds regularly and effectively took care of the weed problem. However, in the process, we ended up loosing almost 25% of our shrubs! They had been growing fine for several years, until Cedar Run took over. Perhaps, the spraying or the irrigation problem was part of the problem. Alden offered no solutions regarding how to save the dying plants. Now, I'm out $1,300 in fees paid to Cedar Run and need to hire someone else to repair my landscaping in my front yard!
Description of Work: Cedar Run was hired to maintain my landscaping in my front yard, which wraps around the front of my home -- not a huge job. This included spraying for weeds (thistle), mulching, weeding, trimming, and clean-up.

We were contracted with this homeowner to tackle a sever thistle problem that they had at their home, along with some general maintenance work. On our first visit we were to spray the thistle, remove dying or dead rhododendron and holly, and divide some grasses for transplanting. It was during this dividing that my crew accidentally hit their underground trickle irrigation system, that was grid-like under the ground and around the plants, very difficult to avoid. When it was brought to my attention, I requested that the homeowner get an estimate from their irrigation contractor for the repair, which they did. The repair came in at $242.00, not $500.00, and I deducted it from their invoice. The shrubs that were removed were not initially planted by Cedar Run, and there were more that appeared stressed, we only were to pull the worst ones. Section 2 of our proposal was for return visits, at a specified cost for each visit, to re-spray the thistle until controlled. Due to the tenacious nature of the weed, and the amount of time it was left to get out of control at the home, I was not able to say how many times we would need to re-spray. It wound up being three times. This is the only spot in our work where you may say the cost was more than what was on the quote, which showed the price of a single spray, but was clearly written that repeated sprays would be needed, with a cost for each spray. The customer signed off on the proposal. Section three of our proposal was to return after we knocked down the thistle, and plant 1 new holly, and to mulch. That holly is still under warranty, so I guess that is not one of the ones that are dying. The work we had been asked to perform was quoted at $3020.00 including the initial spray. Not the $1300.00 that the customer states, so I guess they may not remember all the details. I am happy to read that we did return as promised and "effectively took care of the weed problem". This winter, we surveyed all of our 625 customers, and received only 6 responses that had any negative comments in them about our performance and quality. Six is too many, and we always are working towards perfection. There were some more comments about the cost of our services, and as a response, we have held the line on our labor costs this year in an effort to work with new and existing clients who are having trouble in these difficult times.

Hold on to your wallet with BOTH HANDS! The initial pricing for this project was much higher; we removed many of the trees and shrubs to bring the project down to the price I wanted to spend. The design was executed very well, and I felt that the design component was definitely better than other competitors out there. The execution was carried out promptly and as agreed. However; they did not stake the 3 Evergreens, despite apparently shallow root systems which eventually caused all 3 of these trees to blow over in windstorms(separately)requiring phone calls which then brought them out to replant and stake up the trees, which suffered some root shock and stunted their growth. One subsequently died, requiring replacement. I don't understand why a company which sells this stock wouldn't just stake the trees from the start? I would think this would have been easier for them and me, better for the trees, and cheaper than 3 extra trips and a replacement tree(which they did not charge me for). Additionally, they mulched the area very nicely; and it grew a bumper crop of weeds. Again; why would a professional company not suggest to me that we put a weed barrier down as they were planting? It never occurred to me-but now we are faced with placing a weed barrier around and between all these already planted trees and shrubs.
Description of Work: Contracted with Cedar Run Landscaping to design and plant a privacy screen across the back of our property. 3 Evergreens, 3 Deciduous, and multiple small shrubs or flowering plants.

I AM GLAD TO HEAR THAT MY COMPANY'S DESIGN, EXECUTION AND PROFESSIONALISM WERE OF A SUITABLE QUALITY. I HAVE FOUND IN OVER 29 YEARS OF BUSINESS THAT SERVICE, QUALITY AND PRICE ARE A THREE LEGGED STOOL. IF YOU CUT BACK ON ONE, THE STOOL WOBBLES. IN ORDER TO BETTER SERVE OUR CUSTOMERS NEEDS, I ALWAYS ASK IF THERE IS A BUDGET THAT WE MAY WORK FROM, SO THAT OUR DESIGN TIME IS MOST PRODUCTIVE AND THE DESIGN ITSELF IS TAILORED TO OUR CUSTOMERS NEEDS. FREQUENTLY A CUSTOMER APPROACHES ANSWERING THAT QUESTION WITH MUCH TREPIDATION, SO WE WIND UP ADJUSTING, ADAPTING AND REFINING A PROPOSAL TO GET TO A POINT THAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR THEM. THAT IS ONE WAY TO APPROACH WORKING TOGETHER, I PREFER CREATING A WORKING RELATIONSHIP THAT FOSTERS TRUST THAT ALLOWS FOR A BUDGET RANGE. WHEN THE PROJECT WAS INSTALLED, WE APPLIED A PRE-EMERGENT WEED CONTROL PRIOR TO MULCHING. THIS WILL CONTROL MOST NEWLY GERMINATED SEEDS FOR MOST OF A GROWING SEASON. AFTER THE FIRST SEASON, AND PRIOR TO FOLLOW UP MULCHING, IT IS NECESSARY TO RE-APPLY. WE WERE NOT GIVEN THE CHANCE TO MAINTAIN THIS LANDSCAPE, SO I AM NOT SURE IF SUBSEQUENT APPLICATIONS WERE MADE, OR IF PERENNIAL WEEDS WERE CONTROLLED PRIOR TO THEIR SETTING AND DISBURSING NEW SEEDS.. THIS PROPERTY BACKS UP TO WILD FIELDS AND FENCE ROWS, AND THERE IS MUCH OPPORTUNITY FOR RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF WEED SEEDS FROM BOTH SPRING, AND FALL BLOSSOMING WEEDS AND WILDFLOWERS. WE ONLY USE WEED CONTROL FABRICS UNDER STONE, WHEN THAT IS USED IN THE LANDSCAPE. THIS IS BECAUSE PERENNIALS THAT SPREAD, AND GROUND COVERS THAT GROW AND SPREAD BY STOLONS, LAYERING OR ENLARGING ROOT SYSTEMS CANNOT PERFORM WELL WITH A WEED FABRIC. ALSO, AFTER THE WEED FABRIC IS IN PLACE, AND MULCH IS APPLIED, NEWLY BLOWN IN WEED SEEDS WILL GERMINATE IN THE MULCH LAYER, ON TOP OF THE FABRIC, NECESSITATING THE SAME PRE- AND POST EMERGENT WEED CONTROL MEASURES. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A NO MAINTENANCE GARDEN, EVEN WILDFLOWER MEADOWS REQUIRE YEARLY MAINTENANCE TO PERFORM OVER TIME AND NOT BE INUNDATED WITH INVASIVES.. AS TO THE LACK OF STAKING THE NEW TREES, IT IS SUGGESTED BY THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF ARBORICULTURE THAT STAKING BE DONE ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. TREES WILL DEVELOP A STRONGER ROOT SYSTEM, AND WILL DEVELOP THICKER TRUNKS MORE QUICKLY IF ALLOWED TO NATURALLY MOVE WITH THE ELEMENTS. WHEN WE WERE MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, OUR RESPONSE WAS PROFESSIONAL, WITH A TIMELY AND PROPER FOLLOW UP. WE HONORED OUR WARRANTY, AND STAND BEHIND OUR WORK.

We had performed an extensive search for the right landscape company to do our project. For most projects deciding on which contractor to hire is normally not difficult. When deciding on which landscape company to use it is especially difficult. Generally, you do not have an exact feeling of what you are going to get until the work is completed. The design can look good on paper but be much different upon completion. The trees can vary significantly and if you negotiate on price the size and shape could change. Our goal was to have something extraordinary and our expectations were very high. Alden was professional and took the time to listen and understand what we wanted before designing the waterfall and landscaping. His expertise in waterfalls and landscaping is excellent so we trusted his recommendations. The design was fantastic and the final work exceeded our expectations. Throughout the project Alden's crew took the time to do the job right. They were on schedule with our timetable. Also, they always cleaned up after themselves and the guys were always polite and friendly. We plan to have Cedar Run doing our landscaping in the future.
Description of Work: There were two phases to our landscaping project. Alden and his team designed and installed a dramatic waterfall for our new pool. Most pool waterfalls look fake, with some stones piled up by the side of pool. Alden's design looks natural with two main sections. There was a significant amount of top soil required to build up the waterfall area to the necessary height. His choice of boulders and stones was excellent and the placement superb. His crew also used railroad ties to create a level area for our shed due to the slope of our yard. The second phase was the selection of nine trees. Again, we wanted mature trees and we were not sure what we wanted. Alden's expertise was extremely valuable in assisting us in determining what type of tress to use. He personally selected the trees, choosing the proper height and fantastic shape. Finally, he decided on the placement of the trees in our yard so the trees would be healthy, and to provide added privacy and to enhance the beauty of the yard. He was successful on all accounts.

I love this company. The owner is wonderful and the workers are great. We have a huge front yard with many flower beds. The beds were overgrown and full of weeds. A whole team of workers spent an entire day working on my yard. It was a real mess. This happened months ago and the yard still looks good. The flower beds were in terrible condition - full of crab grass and weeds. They had dig way down to get all the weeds up. This was done mostly by hand. I will definitely use them again. They gave me some great tips on lawn and garden care also.
Description of Work: They weeded and trimmed all beds, edged, trimmed all the hedges, all perennials. They applied weed and feed and generally made the front property look wonderful.

Overall experience has been pleasurable. He has worked with us over the years to do projects with our yard that has allowed us to stay within a reasonable budget for our family. He also provides amazing lawn care! I have never had any company perform such excellent work. Contractor does what needs to get done without being told what to do. Special projects are discussed and executed extremely prompt. There are no negatives. If price is a concern, express how much you would like to spend and he will work out a plan for you. He is an artist in his profession. I give him cart blanch to do what needs to get done.
Description of Work: The projects are going on over the past several years. The owner of the company knows what needs to be done and executes it in an extremely timely manner. Each job is different; he completes the work in a manner consistent with a good business man. He starts the work and shows up every day until the work is complete. Landscapes our pool area; every year adds to the beauty of our home. It is lovely to look at. Also takes care of lawn mowing, fertilizing, weeding, storm clean up. I never have to tell him what to do. He just gets it done. I told the contractor/landscaper the feeling our family wants when we enjoy relaxing by the pool. His artistic ability as well as using the best plants available is something that has added much joy to our family.

Cedar Run is there when they say they will be; they are professional; work hard; have great attention to detail--I would say an artistic eye. Work looks organic when done--not something dropped in. And, it gets only better with time. The owner, Alden Zove, is meticulous in his work and his word. We have never had a bad experience. While the price is at the higher end, I always believe you get what you pay for. And we have always gotten superb craftsmanship with Cedar Run. I recommend the company without reservation.
Description of Work: We have been using Cedar Run since the early 1990's and have always been extremely pleased with the professionalism, quality and timeliness of the work. They have done landscaping, hardscaping and fence work for us. Work that was done in 1991 still looks beautiful and still elicits comments. The most recent work involved removing wood decking in a pool area and replacing it with slate and pavers. Cedar Run created a serene and magnificent area. In addition we had a new front walkway and wall using pavers installed.
