Thank you for this "A" review! There are some beautiful plantings on this property which has suffered from deferred maintenance. Your goals and interests were clear and we enjoyed working with you to help create the look that you want and to reduce ongoing maintenance.

We have hired Custom Gardens twice, at two different houses, and we have been thoroughly satisfied each time. At our previous house, we desperately needed help with curb appeal. Ellen designed gorgeous landscaping with beautifully colored plantings that required very little maintenance. Our front yard looked stunning and definitely helped sell our house! We asked Ellen back to help us at our new house. The yard was overgrown and in need of expert care. We don’t know what kind of landscaping changes we want yet, so we asked Custom Gardens to work with what we currently have. It looks so much better! Our yard looks well-maintained and healthy. We will definitely hire Custom Gardens again in the future. Ellen really listens to find out what is important to us, and we know we can rely on her expertise to make our home’s exterior beautiful.

Thank you very much for this review. We always enjoy a challenge, and the house you sold definitely required creativity for maximum impact and minimal maintenance, in small garden beds. I am so glad that our work was a success! At your new house, you have much more space and lots to work with. We never want a client to rush into new landscaping, especially when the client isn't ready to make changes. We were glad to do a "tuneup" of current plantings so that you are comfortable with them. There also are some plants that are worth keeping, but needed rehabilitative pruning and we were able to start that process. That way, when you are ready to make changes, you will have some plants that you want to keep that are healthy and happy. Thank you very much for asking us to work on your properties.

The yard looks great. We could not be more pleased.
Description of Work: All our beds needed to be weeded, edged and mulched. Some plants were relocated to different areas of the property while a few were replaced. Annuals and perennials were planted in decorative pots by our front door. Custom Gardens LLC has been our landscaper since 2010 when our property was first landscaped. Since that time we have had Ellen and her crew return each year for maintenance. Our property always looks great and several of our neighbors have complimented us on its appearance. Whether your landscaping needs are large or small, we highly recommend Custom Gardens LLC.

Thank you so very much for your kind words. We love working with you and turning your ideas and requests into a more beautiful landscape. As plants have grown over the years we have decided together to move plants where they will have more room; add colors you like; and as always, be sensitive to protecting the environment and providing a landscape friendly to birds and bees. It is always fun to do your pots at the front entrance, especially since you are receptive to trying different colors and plants.

The results are stunning! For years we battled a poor quality lawn due to several immense trees in our yard. Tired of the battle but not wanting to just go with ground coverage like ivy, Ellen helped us envision something unique that enhances our property and its value.
Description of Work: We had custom Gardens design a full front yard shade garden using local plantings. They selected amazing plants, found them for us st local nurseries and then planted them. Our entire neighborhood is envious and always asked who we used.

Thank you for this wonderful review! Your front yard was an opportunity to create a landscape that loves the shade, has something interesting going on all year, and is low maintenance. We worked together to select colors and plants that you liked from the suggestions I gave you. The picture you attached gives a good idea of your new landscape. Unlike a lawn, your plants help absorb water and promote our ecology by supporting pollinators. They do not require use of pesticides or chemicals that can pollute our ground water. I enjoyed seeing the growth in the plants from last year to this and your skills in keeping everything looking good are also on display. Thank you very much for allowing us to help you create a landscape you will love for years to come.

“Ellen asked about colors and fragrances that I like or dislike. I likes purples, reds, and yellows. She sent me several suggestions for plants and combinations, and explained that the shrubs have root systems that work well on a slope. I chose Aucuba, Gold Dust which is evergreen and has yellow sprinkled on the foliage, and Callicarpa which has white flowers in the spring and purple berries in the fall. They go beautifully with shrubs already in the bed, which Ellen identified as Itea, Little Henry. “The crew worked quickly and effectively and were very professional.
Description of Work: I needed landscaping on a very difficult area (steep hill). “I love plants and good landscapes but am not a gardener. There is a large sloped bed that is visible from my living room. Over the years a number of the shrubs have died off, leaving big gaps that were inviting to weeds. When I met with Ellen Covner of Custom Gardens, LLC I told her that I wanted something that would give color, fill in the space, and be low maintenance. I said that I did not want high-end plants, but something that would be attractive and hardy.

Thank you very much for your review. Your property and project were a very interesting challenge for us and I appreciate the opportunity that you gave us to work with you. There are several ways to plant on a slope and I wanted to make sure that we picked the best one for getting your plants firmly installed and in a position to put out good roots, not only for growth, but to keep them well anchored. When I checked on them last month they were in good shape so I think you are off to an excellent start and look forward to seeing how they grow this summer.

Thank you for your review. You have done such beautiful work on your property that it was a real pleasure to be asked to fill in some of the empty spaces and provide more structure for the front of the house with evergreen and other shrubs. We solved the problem of bare spots on a shady slope with pachysandra in 2015. We were all pleased to see how these beds had filled in when we returned in 2016. We created your "Fairy Garden" by using some of the shade perennials on site and adding others to create a bed that flowed from one of the the house where you had some mature shrubs underplanted with perennials, to a bed that continued the theme of perennials. balanced with some shrubs at the end. The result is lots of color in the shade through foliage and flowers. We look forward to working with you again this spring.

We love Ellen and her awesome team-- we couldn't be happier!
Description of Work: We love a beautiful landscape but neither my husband or I are interested or skilled in doing our own gardening. The plants in the front of our house had become badly overgrown and there were weeds growing around the plants. We also had some plants that looked really awful. We wanted a cleanup and new plants that would not require lots of tending. Ellen Covner of Custom Gardens, LLC met with me and understood our dilemma. Her crew cleaned up the beds, pruned the overgrown shrubs, and got rid of the dead stuff. She knew that I liked color and suggested lavender reblooming azaleas. We love them!

To all considering hiring Ellen Covner of Custom Gardens, LLC, please be aware of her unethical and unprofessional business practices. Ms. Covner performed work in excess of what we agreed to in our email communications, and then threatened to sue me if I did not pay for this excess work. I first contracted landscaping design and installation services with Ms. Covner in the spring of 2015. I was pleased with her work and impressed with her hard working crew. Part of the design included 16 Rozanne Geraniums. Of those 16, only 6 were still alive the next spring. Not to worry, she has a one-year plant guarantee. Since she was going to be on the property to replace the geraniums, I asked if she could also prune various plants on my property. I provided a prioritized list of plants to be pruned with the statement that she was only to do as much as could be accomplished in four man-hours. Her rate per worker is $50 an hour so I was expecting a bill of $200. When the bill arrived via email, it was for $445! I questioned this number as our contract was only for 4 man hours of work. Ms. Covner, previously a practicing lawyer, claimed that 4 man hours was a limitation on the number of hours her crew could be on the property regardless of how many workers there were. What? I sent Ms. Covner the Merriam Webster definition of a man hour. Next she claimed that if I knew her understanding was incorrect, I should have said something. I am not a mind reader. I was relying on what we agreed to in our emails. If she thought the terms of our contract had changed, it was incumbent on her to say so and ask for agreement before proceeding with work significantly in excess of 4 man-hours. I sent Ms. Covner a check for $200 to cover the agreed upon work. She replied with an email saying that if she did not receive additional funds from me within 5 calendar days, she would take me to small claims court. She did reduce the amount of the bill by $45 meaning I only had to pay double that for which I had contracted. I would gladly have faced her in court, but am in the process of moving to Texas. The cost of flying back to the Philadelphia area is far greater than winning a $445 lawsuit. As such, my only realistic alternative was to send an additional check. From the time I first questioned the bill, Ms. Covner not once reached out to me by phone or in person to discuss this issue and try to reach a compromise. Instead she repeatedly claimed in her emails that she did what “she understood” I wanted, and that I could be considered “deceitful” by not correcting her misunderstanding. She performed work beyond the contract and then threatened to sue me if I did not pay. All over two hundred dollars. Ms. Covner’s handling of this situation was both unprofessional and unethical. I cannot recommend Custom Gardens, LLC owned and operated by Ms. Ellen Covner.

This review was written by the wife, who engaged me for work in 2015 and again this year. Her description of the original invoice amount of $445 which I reduced to $400 following her objection to the original amount is correct. However, I object to her description of my business practices as unethical and unprofessional. She has not acknowledged any responsibility on her part for this unfortunate situation. We are very careful to do only work which the client has authorized. Our work on her property in 2015 changed from the original areas she considered to the final project that we did. I bill on a Time and Materials basis and had informed her in writing of the cost of the crew as well as the cost for my time. She was aware of the difference in these hourly rates. She was very pleased with the project and submitted a positive review to Angies' List. Despite her references to a "contract," for our work in 2016, there was no written contract that defined the project as limited to one person for four hours of work. Her original email request in 2016 referenced two-three hours of work which later became four. We communicated through emails and I informed her that I would be coming with a crew member. My understanding was that the two of us were not to exceed four hours. She did not question my bringing a crew member or tell me that the two of us could not exceed two hours (two people x two hours = four hours). She was present when we arrived. I reviewed with her the plants that were on her most recent email list. She added some plants for us to prune that were not on the list. This often occurs when we are on a client's property. If it extends our time on the site the client understands that the original estimate for the project cost may increase. She did not say that these additional plants were not to be done while we were there. We discussed others and I said I thought she could wait on pruning them. She talked about the potential for work on other plants later in the summer since they might be moving and she wanted the property to look good and sell quickly. I understood that she wanted us to work on the plants that we had just reviewed, including those not on her previous email list, as part of her preparation to ready the property for a potential move, and that there may be a second phase of plant work later. When I showed her some of the pruning to make sure that this was what she wanted she did not object that we had done the work, did not tell us to stop work, and did not tell us that it was not authorized. Rather, she liked what we had done. At no time during our discussions, nor at any time that I was on her property, did she say that the work was limited to one person for four hours. She saw that both I and the crew member were working on the plants and did not object or ask whether we were planning on completing the work in two hours. In one of her emails prior to the project she said that any additional work was to be discussed with her before doing it. I did exactly that when I was on her property. She had emailed that she would be doing the cleaning up. Since there was plant material on the ground in many areas around her house I asked her whether she wanted us to group them in piles. She authorized us to do that. Throughout my time on her property her words and conduct authorized the additional work and the presence of two people. The actual breakdown for our time on her property was 2.75 hours for me, 3. 5 hours for the crew member I brought, and .75 hours for a second crew member whom I sent over when I left to help finish up and keep costs down. The work took place on July 18, not June [Member Information Removed]. The invoice was emailed to her on July 21. After she objected to it, I immediately reduced the invoice from $445 to $400. She rejected my position that she authorized the work by two people when we were on her property, as described above. On July 26 I explained my position again, including the following: "If [my] understanding was not correct then you should have said something to me. I would have left and [the crew member] would have worked for four hours. To accept the work we were doing while we were there and after the fact say that it was not authorized is wrong. One could say that allowing us to work while intending to pay for only four hours of work by one person was deceptive and that you obtained the benefits of our services without intending to pay for them." She did not respond. In September I received a check in the amount of $200 claiming to be full and final payment. At that point I demanded payment of $200 to reach the $400 that was acceptable to me or I would go to court.

My garden continues to grow and settle in each year - I love it! Ellen monitors the progress of the plantings and makes suggestions if a plant is not doing well. The stone border and rain garden have been very effective in managing the water run-off and are beautiful and pleasing to look at too! I look forward to working with Custom Gardens, LLC for many years to come and give them the highest recommendation.
Description of Work: Custom Gardens, LLC has been helping me with my garden for several years now. Ellen and her team are knowledgeable and take the greatest care to create the garden that fits the property, the style and age of my home, and my schedule and ability to maintain it. Recently I had problems with water run-off when we had heavy rain and Ellen and her team suggested and installed a beautiful rain garden as well as a river stone border for water management along the property border where the water came rushing in.

Thank you very much for this detailed review. Your property presents some interesting challenges. It is a pleasure to work with you to come up with creative approaches to your landscaping that you will enjoy. Your presence enabled us to take care of a few items on your landscaping list that we had not originally planned and I am glad that we were able to do that. I always let crew know of comments from the homeowner. From their direct interactions with you they knew that you appreciated their work. At first the proprietor was responsive. Having used her last year to work on our landscaping, we decided to use her again even after her last year project was over $2,000.00 OVER her budget. Which we paid to her! We try to use sole proprietors whenever we can. This year we asked for a plan in January. We finally received it in March. When we originally moved into our home, we had another landscaper do our plantings. She prepared a professional plan on graph paper stating exactly where all the plants were going to be along with proper names and common names. Extremely, professionally prepared. She has since retired or we would have continued to use her. This year the proprietor prepared a plan that was so poorly prepared I cannot imagine she thought it was professionally executed. We paid $500 for the plan with the promise that the money would be applied to our project. We had our proprietor bid on the project she prepared and felt it was extremely high for what she was going to do. So, we bid the project to someone else and decided to go with the second landscaper because his price was lower and contained more soil and preparation. This decision did not sit well with the proprietor. She stated she already purchased the plants - which no one expected her to do or asked her to do. We decided since she bought the plants, we would have her just install them after everything was prepared by the hired landscaper. Which we didn't need to do! From the minute she arrived to our home she was curt and plainly unpleasant to work with. She was looking for any problem she could find from the landscaper who prepared our property. I fairly admit one item she stated was correct. The soil in certain areas was not tilled or enriched enough to accept the plants. She pointed this out in not a very nice way and I decided to just have her leave the plants (which we did not need to do) and have the second landscaper plant them. She firmly stated that she will not guarantee the plants since she did not plant them. If I could have had her come back to install the plants, it would have meant her telling me how her workers were there and the soil isn't right and she needed to reschedule them. I was afraid of the costs of this so I nicely said to just leave them. Meanwhile, she did install 5 other ordered plants in another area that same day. We received an invoice of over $2200.00 for the 5 plants she planted and the original plants she purchased which she will not guarantee! She will not apply the $500 deposit we gave her because she says she didn't do the installation. Baloney! Would I ever use this proprietor again, NO. Am I happy, NO.

You and your husband requested our services in 2014. Until this situation I thought we enjoyed a mutually cordial and productive relationship. We started doing maintenance and then you asked us to update your perennial garden, replace shrubs that had died, and add a tree. I worked with you to make sure that I selected plants and colors that you like. You and your husband were very complimentary of our work. Last fall, you asked us to landscape a border from which you had removed many large trees. The area was approximately 1000 square feet. The project included removing a fence, English ivy and other weeds and pieces of roots, regrading, turning part of the border into lawn, and adding new plants, which we mutually selected. I gave you and your husband an [Member Information Removed] for the project, which was based on two 1/2- 3 days of work and actually took four days. When we started the project you added to it by asking us to transplant some shrubs from other areas of your property to the border and to clean out a large overgrown area in the back of the property that was overgrown with weeds. With your permission, I obtained a free load of wood chips for the cleaned up area which has minimized the growth of new weeds. Implementation of the original project was complicated by the ivy and removing it resulted in the need for more soil than originally anticipated. You and/or your husband were present for this project and saw how complicated it had become. I emailed you prior to completion of the project that I thought we would exceed the time estimated in the original [Member Information Removed] and would go over the [Member Information Removed]. The email said that I would be on the property the following day to discuss any questions you or your husband might [Member Information Removed]. Neither of you asked me about this. After the project was completed I received an email from your husband asking about the grass seed and saying "Otherwise it looks great." I emailed the invoice to you and noted the items in the original [Member Information Removed], identified what was under or over the [Member Information Removed], and the additional items you had added. The total was about $2000 greater than the original [Member Information Removed]. You sent me a check for the full amount and I expressed my appreciation. Your husband sent me an email January 11 [Member Information Removed] that I prepare a plan for the front foundation beds. We had been discussing these beds for about a year. Plants were dying; and the beds looked cluttered and overgrown. We had discussed amending the soil as part of any new landscaping for these beds to add nutrition to the soil which would nourish the plants. We met on January 19 to discuss the project in more detail. I explained that I charge $500 to prepare a plan. If the homeowner chooses another landscaper I [Member Information Removed] been compensated for preparing the plan. If the homeowner chooses me to do the project I apply the $500 payment for the plan to the project [Member Information Removed]. I also explained that the plan would be on graph paper and in pencil. I summarized our meeting in a January 20 email and included the components of the project: demolition of plant material in the beds except for those plants we were keeping, making the beds smaller and amending them with new blended topsoil, increasing the area of lawn, purchasing the new plants once you had approved them, installing them, and adding mulch. The email also said: The [Member Information Removed] for the design is $500. It includes one modification of the plan, but not a total redo. Since you are an established (and cherished) client I will apply the design fee to the project [Member Information Removed], as if it were a deposit." After an exchange of emails concerning the design, I sent the plan to you in Florida where you were staying. The design was on graph paper and showed the names and quantities of the plants, and their locations. We worked further on the plan upon your return. I spray painted the new beds so that you and your husband could see them and we made a few modifications to the new beds. We finalized the plants to be used and I sent you an [Member Information Removed] for the project on April 22. Since we were also adding some plants to the border bed in the fall I broke out the [Member Information Removed] for each area. It was my understanding that I would be doing the project so the [Member Information Removed] showed a deduction of $500 (the fee for the design) from the total [Member Information Removed] to implement the plan. Plants were late coming to market this spring and hard to find so I purchased the plants for the project. When I inquired about the status of the project your husband emailed me to say that you were waiting for another [Member Information Removed]. On May 5 he emailed me that "While we believe you would do a great job your pricing is too high." Accordingly you and your husband had selected another landscaper for the project. I emailed a thank you for the update. Your husband responded, asking me to "finalize the plantings and their locations and prior to our work being done, come out and spray the exact areas for renovation." I emailed your husband on May 6 that the plan you had showed the location of the plantings, except for one modification you had made which I could email to you. I also said: "I already [Member Information Removed] your plants because I wanted to be able to get you on the schedule as soon as possible. Would you consider having your contractor do the preparation and my crew do the planting? There would be no question about plant placement then." On May 7 your husband emailed me that "This could possibly work." He requested that the [Member Information Removed] be itemized by labor and [Member Information Removed] of plants. I emailed estimates for the border bed and the front foundation beds on May 11. The estimates showed the [Member Information Removed] for the plants and labor for each area. The total for both estimates was $2660 of which the plants comprised the majority of the [Member Information Removed]. My email also said: "If we spend less time then you will receive the lower [Member Information Removed] for labor. You will not be charged more than $600 [for labor] unless we encounter a problem with the preparation of the beds, in which case I will let you know immediately." You authorized me to do the planting after reviewing the [Member Information Removed] and asking about the size of the plants. We scheduled May 18 for us to plant. On May 17, I emailed you inquiring whether the beds would be ready and you responded on May 17 that "He's done and it's ready for you." When we arrived on May 18 you greeted me and said you were glad we had come early because you did not [Member Information Removed] much time since you had to [Member Information Removed] for a golf game. We looked at the border bed together. There were some dead plants in areas we were installing new plants. You said you had forgotten to tell your landscaper to remove them and authorized us to remove them. At your request we made other changes to the locations of some of the plants in the bed and pruned back some branches of a tall shrub that were hanging over some of the plants. We then looked at the front foundation beds. You asked me to move a plant that had been transplanted too close to the house, which we did. I had set out the plants for planting. You reviewed them and asked me to move some of them to different locations, which we did. I pointed out to you that the beds had not been prepared and I could not guarantee the plants. The beds had been made smaller and grass seed had been spread on areas to become lawn. However, the original beds had not been amended with fresh soil or graded. As you know from working with me in 2014 and 2015 I only guarantee plants that [Member Information Removed] has purchased and [Member Information Removed]. I could not guarantee plants for the front foundation beds when they had not been amended and prepared for planting. This was included in my proposal for the project and from you review above, this work also was included in the proposal for the landscaper you selected. When I said that I could not guarantee these plants you told me to [Member Information Removed] them for your landscaper to plant and left for your golf game. Other than your concern about your golf game you were cordial as we reviewed both beds and took the actions described above. I emailed you the invoice for our work on May 22. The total was $2255. This was less than the [Member Information Removed] you and your husband had approved and reflected the work we did on your property including the additional items you requested. We then had several exchanges of emails during which you made increasingly negative comments about me, including my demeanor on the 18th. On June 12 I emailed: " I regret that you are unhappy and found my demeanor unsatisfactory when we were on your property. I was distressed to see that the beds were not prepared for planting as you had represented they would be in your email responding to my question about the condition of the beds. If I offended you, please accept my apology." On June 16 you emailed me that you had mailed the check on Thursday, June 12 and asked me to confirm receipt. I responded that I had not received a check. You mailed me a new check which I acknowledged. Subsequently you emailed me that you had mailed the first check to another address and it had been returned to you. In summary, you and your husband were in charge throughout this entire project. Your and your husband chose to ask me for a plan. Your and your husband chose to work with me to finalize the plan. You and your husband chose not to accept my [Member Information Removed] for the project and chose another landscaper to do the projec

We live in China right now, so having upgrades to our landscaping has a degree of difficulty beyond the ordinary. We needed a landscaper who could work with bad soil and only partial plantings, some of which needed corrective pruning or other care. Our goal was to finish the landscape with plants that would blend well with those on site, and be low maintenance. Ellen didn?t flinch at the prospect of helping us. She is such an effective and thorough communicator that we knew our options, the costs, prices, everything we needed to know to make our decisions. She delivered as promised and is a very efficient and dependable landscaper. From the pictures she has sent us, her work looks quite beautiful and achieved our goals. She also helped us find a good arborist and irrigation supplier, so we could easily work with the team and not need to pay a general contractor. Her prices are fair; her work is outstanding. If you are looking for a landscape company that is easy to work with and dependable, I highly recommend Custom Gardens, LLC.
Description of Work: They upgraded our half-finished yard mess that was left behind when our pool contractor declared bankruptcy. She removed dead trees, moved plants to more appropriate places, added plants, upgraded the soil, made a drainage ditch look attractive, added mulch, etc. In short, she fixed and finished our backyard project and turned it into a lovely garden.

Thank you very much for this wonderful review! Yours was one of my most challenging projects and I am truly delighted that you are as pleased with it as I am. You made the job easier by monitoring email and responding to my questions, comments, and pictures of the work in progress. It is a real compliment that you have asked us to look at another project for you this year.

This plot of land was in an area with many trees and the complication of deer. It was a large bare area, having only been mulched. We had very little knowledge of shade plants. She collaborated well with my husband and I - on a couple occasions before we finalized the plan. The crew came when scheduled. They were professional and pleasant. Work was completed in a timely manner. We are pleased with the result and plan to have Customer Gardens do another bed for us in the spring.
Description of Work: Ellen designed and had her crew plant a shade garden.

Thank you for this positive and detailed review. Your property had some interesting challenges. Our meetings were very helpful, enabling me to create a design and use plants and colors, some of which were not on your original list of preferences, but gave you the feel and look that you wanted, and minimize maintenance as well. When we plant your 300 crocuses this fall you should get a great display of early, deer resistant plants next spring in this bed. I am most appreciative of your review and looking forward to working on next year's spring project. Thank you very much for your confidence in me and the crew.

I first met with Ellen of Custom Gardens in the Fall of 2014 to begin work on a landscape design for my pool. She asked me about colors, textures, size, desired maintenance involvement, viewing angles and of course budget. She was very thorough. It was obvious that her goal was to create something not just to meet my basic gardening needs, but something that would bring joy when I looked at it. She was successful on both fronts. On the day of installation in the Spring of 2015, Ellen and her crew were a well oiled machine. They worked efficiently and quickly. Since the installation, Ellen has checked in with me and always been quick to answer any of my questions. Ellen takes pride in her work and it shows! I highly recommend. Just as a side note, I am posting my review several months after the work was completed on purpose. I don't believe a fair assessment can be given until time has passed as almost any landscaping you have done looks good on the day it is completed.

Thank you very much for your review. It is very important to me that I understand a client's likes and dislikes so that I can create something that is really special for them. I am so glad that you are pleased with the results. We also were able to relocate some of your plants around the pool so that they give you more coverage and there is a better "flow" to the plantings. I will pass your compliments on to the crew. They take pride in their work and always appreciate it when their skills are noticed.

We met with Ellen to discuss the look we wanted for new landscaping in the front of our home. She put together a well thought out design that we reviewed in a second meeting. She had great ideas on how to use the existing plants, trimming and relocating some to fit the overall design. We did alter it slightly as the project progressed to achieve the best look. She is very easy to communicate with, great with e-mail and keeping us up to date on the time line of the project. Her team arrived at 6am to start the work, and that was a mutual decision...it's hot as the day wears on and it helps to start as early in the day as possible. The team was easy to talk to and knowledgeable about planting and care of new plants. Ellen was on-site for some time each day to review the plans and check on progress. Plant selection was great, colors on blooming plants were as expected. We are very happy with the results and will use them again!
Description of Work: Designed new landscape for front of our home. Removing the old mulch and landscape cloth, relocating several existing plants and adding new plants, trees and shrubs with the specific colors that we requested. Mulching after all was planted.

Thank you very much for this wonderful review. I like to have owners on site when we begin a new property and it was very helpful to have you there. Once we starting splitting up the many perennials and moving them, the space opened up which made it much easier to visualize placing the new shrubs and relocating the perennials and other shrubs. Your presence ensured that we placed them in a way that made sense to me and that was pleasing to you. We would be delighted to work with you again!

Ellen is courteous, punctual and well-knowledged professional who takes pride in her work and in satisfying her customers. She provided reasonable estimates and worked with us proactively to alter the scope of work to fit within our budget. She followed up on all the project details, making several personal visits to ensure the planning and actual work was done to our satisfaction. She visited the site several times to follow up on the work as it progressed. Her crew was efficient, courteous, and conscientious. We would recommend her highly and plan on using her services in the future.
Description of Work: Cleaned up / improved planting beds around two sides of home, around trees in yard and mailbox area (approximately 1000 sq ft) including removal of old much, cleaning up old/dead plants, pulling weeds, adding new plants where required, transplanting plants/shrubs and putting down new mulch. Ellen also provided design/recommendations on the addition of new dear-resistant plants along with the care, pruning, and shaping of existing plants. She also coordinated with an arborist on the care of several trees on the property.

I am not happy with the landscaping. Custom Gardens LLC insists that they arrived promptly at 6:30 am as scheduled however we were never scheduled for 6:30 am. We were actually scheduled for 7:00 am. I told her that I wanted color put into the garden and she continued to plant green plants and I wanted color in my garden. I also wanted plants dug up and she insisted that they just be cut back. I had called because I was unhappy about how these planters were hung on the garage wall. Once they started growing the short plants were in the back with taller plants in the front covering them from view. I told her I was unhappy with that and I'm still unhappy with that. She had ordered rocks that were going to be placed around the house and around my mailbox but the ones that were meant to surround my mailbox were never placed there although she said that she had over ordered and that was not my request. She was very helpful with the plants. Of the $3,000 budget, $2,000 had went to the labor. All she did was plant things I already had that were not colorful. This was a waste of my money and I don't want anybody else to waste their hard earned money.

I am sorry that you are not happy with our work. When we met to review your landscaping goals we discussed what you liked and did not like. We talked about colors that you wanted. In my follow up letter I reviewed your goals and suggested plants, including pictures in color, that I thought were responsive to your goals. We then talked on the telephone to review the plant suggestions. You selected those that you liked from the choices in the letter. We jointly selected July 7 for your project which was a date you could be on site. Having the homeowner available allows us to answer any questions that may come up and to make sure you are happy with the work. We started at 6:30 AM as I had told you we would. We completed the work in one day. You were present almost the entire time and were actively engaged in the process, showing us where you wanted us to move shrubs and perennials to make space for the new plants. You told me that you liked the new bed we created for the plants that we moved. In addition to the new plantings, with your permission, we did restorative pruning on several of your shrubs that had been damaged by the severe winter. You requested that we cut back some plants that were close to the border with your neighbor. You asked me to look at your roses which you said were not doing well. I showed you the signs of insect infestation, treated the roses, and told you where your could buy a product you could use to keep your roses healthy in the future. While I was on your property you expressed pleasure with the new plants and our work. After I left, you called me while the crew were still on the property, and again a few days later, to tell me how happy you were. At the outset of your project, you said that your budget limit was $3000. The cost of the project was $2900. After subtracting the 10% discount Custom Gardens gives to first time clients from Angie's List, the actual cost to you was $2610. You paid the bill promptly. It was not until August 6 - a month after the work - that you called to tell me you were not happy with the landscaping. I regret that the suggestions I made to you during the telephone call were not satisfactory.

Our yard slopes in two directions, and had been badly damaged by erosion caused by water run-off. We solicited bids from three contractors. One found the challenge too great, and refused to bid. Another came in with a detailed plan, but was not sensitive to our budget and therefore proposed an approach that was more than six times larger than our stated goal. Ellen Covner of Custom Gardens recommended a water management solution provided by another company, and then spent several hours working on a landscaping plan, consulting with us frequently and modifying the plan to accommodate both our budget and the outcome of the water treatment. When the plan was finalized, she engaged the necessary subcontractors and oversaw the selection of materials to ensure the highest quality. Once work commenced, the work crew members were prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, and very hard-working. Over the course of two days, Ellen and her team transformed our yard, and gave us additional recommendations for work that we could undertake on our own. We are delighted with the results, as are our neighbors. As Ellen herself told us at the outset, she is neither the most expensive nor the least expensive landscaper in the area. But price is not the only factor in evaluating a job; quality is equally important. In our view, Ellen provides the best value, and we would strongly advise anyone with landscaping requirements to hire her.
Description of Work: Added 14 cubic yards (two dump trucks) of garden soil to a compound slop to fill in erosion and bare areas from new water management system; sprayed area to be planted with Roundup; planted 80 flats of pachysandra (4000 plants) and filled in the bare areas with grass seed; transplanted azaleas; added river stone around drainage basins; removed old RR ties and replaced with new ones; added screenings between new lumber and driveway.

It went very well, 4 men were at my home from 6:00am to about 3:00pm. They worked very quietly so not to wake anyone up because of the time. My property was over run by weeds and they removed them all plus trim my evergreens. They are very knowledged on the different types of plants that I have and how to take care of them.

Ellen incorporated our preferences into her overall design plan for the project. She spent additional time researching prospective plantings to accommodate an allergy to strong fragrances. All selections were reviewed with us before the plan was finalized and implemented. Ellen transformed our property, she and her staff were courteous professional in their work.
Description of Work: The front of the property-replaced most original plantings, incorporating two existing plants into the new design. The rear of the property-designed and established new beds across the entire back of the house surrounding the large deck.
