Response from Smith Exteriors
I'm not sure how to respond to this review. I answered the initial call when the customer called. I went and looked at the job immediately, the next day. At no charge. When I arrived, I rang the bell and introduced myself. I presented and gave my business card to the customer. I'm all for high standards, but this is a D for professionalism and a N/A for responsiveness??? The customer never came outside. We discussed the job through a storm door as he pointed here and there. This was a bit odd. Sometimes you should just go with your gut and walk away. However, I told him I would get a written quote to him as quickly as I could. And I had planned to. I later get a voicemail that says I assume you are no longer interested in the job because I have not received my quote. The next day I see a F review. I'm not going to offer my opinion. I will leave the facts speak for me and respond with them alone. Yes, It is now safe to assume I no longer am interested in this job. But I will say this, I pulled onto a busy street yesterday. I felt there was a completely safe opening with a car already in that line of travel, so I continued to drive. Apparently we don't all agree, because all I could hear was a horn for about 30 seconds. It scared me as I looked up into my mirror. Wow! I thought, what is he so stressed about? He was still a good distance away and nowhere near hitting me. I realize some people just can't resist blowing their horn and are quick to judge without any concern of others. I'm sure Angie'[Member Information Removed] List was not created to give people an F for answering initial calls, immediately taking time to look at a job, providing a business identification and preparing a professional estimate at no cost. Simply because the estimate didn't get there fast enough. The comment, "Never heard from the contractor", simply isn't accurate.

Previous home owner had installed a new furnace. On a routine inspection and cleaning it was revealed that the new furnace was causing issues with the unlined chimney. We called Smith and someone one else... Anderson I think (?). Anderson (?)'s cost was over twice what Smith wanted. Smith provided quick pricing and service, a year an a half later we have no problems.

Weather was not on our side for the originally scheduled dates of 10/9 & 10/10. Bryan called on Saturday, 10/11. The weather forecast did not look good for the beginning of the next week, but he felt that perhaps he could start the job the end of the week--Thurs/Fri 10/16 & 10/17--stating he would switch another customer originally scheduled at the end of the week to the beginning. I agreed. On Wednesday afternoon of 10/15, with the forecast not looking good for Thursday, I called Bryan and left a voice mail at 717-439-7039 about whether he was cancelling the two days. I received no return call. My husband was now scheduled off for 10/16 & 10/17. It was cloudy Thursday, then sunny, then a thunderstorm in the afternoon. I texted Bryan at 10:49 am on 10/16 to check in and ask what his thoughts were since Thursday was a no go. The weather forecast seemed favorable for Friday and Saturday. No return text. Friday was here, I called him again at 11:32 am--same number, got voicemail, and left another message. I also sent an email. Again, there was no response from Bryan on Friday 10/17. On Saturday morning, 10/18, at 7:35 am after no response or contact with him for three days and four messages, I sent a text stating that his lack of responsiveness tells me Smith Exteriors does not want the chimney job. I completely understand the weather issues, but weather is no excuse not to stay in touch. We decided to move forward with another contractor. At 7:37 am on 10/18, I finally received a return call from Bryan--funny how that works. He was apologetic stating he wants to do the work, but the weather has been prohibitive. I expressed my frustration/annoyance over his unresponsiveness. I explained that in my opinion, there is absolutely no excuse for waiting three days to get back to a customer and a simple text message would have sufficed. I elaborated that in my opinion good customer service means responding within 24 hours of a call/customer communication. I gave him three chances to redeem himself--Wed, Thur, Fri--and Bryan failed. His excuse was he had nothing to tell me because the weather did not look good, and he could not just rearrange other customer to accommodate me. I expressed that I was not asking him to rearrange other customers, just communicate within me. I told him no matter how busy you are, there is always a spare moment to text back--even if it's just to say when you'll be back in touch with me. In my opinion Bryan left me hanging for three days. No matter how qualified he may be to do the job or how good the price, I have no confidence that he will not go MIA on me in the middle of the job--not to mention sealing the chimneys has to occur after the mortar cures, which in October could take 30 days. How do I know he'll come back without me having to chase him down. It's simply not worth that possibility.
Description of Work: Bryan Smith of Smith Exteriors delivered an estimate on 9/27 to me for extensive chimney work for one (furnace) chimney, sealing both chimneys when done, a liner/insulation for the furnace chimney, and stainless steel caps for both chimneys. After addressing all of my concerns, I decided to contract with him for the work and initially scheduled the job for October 9th and 10th--pending good weather. I made Bryan aware that my husband would take off work and schedule vacation days to be there when the work was being done, indicating that his company would not permit my husband to take off at the last minute or cancel time scheduled at the last minute so we needed to stay in touch.

Job went very smoothly. Bryan Smith, Owner, was very professional and personalized in his approach. Very competitive pricing. Written estimate was clear and to the point. Easy to understand. Job came in as quoted. Bryan and his staff were very easy to work with. The masons received training/education at Penn College of Technology and hold certifications from chimney safety institutes, as well. I appreciate their commitment to continuing education and to staying current with industry safety standards through their memberships in professional organizations, as standards and recommendations do change over time. Excellent workmanship. Very pleased with all services from inspection, to estimating, to finished product. Would highly recommend.

Mr. Smith arrived within 5 min. of the time he said he would be here. He was very friendly, respectful, and proficient. He got to work right away and completed the work in the time frame he quoted. We did go ahead and put a cap on the chimney as suggested by Mr. Smith. Everything looks great. I was very pleased with the whole process. I would definitely hire him for any other chimney project I had. His price was very reasonable.
Description of Work: We had a crack in the masonry crown on the top of the chimney that needed to be sealed. Mr. Smith recommended Crown Coat to repair the crack. He explained how it worked and also provided a brochure with information on it. Mr. Smith also suggested we put a cap on the crown to assist in protecting the chimney.

My chimney was leaking - with water running down the side of the chimney in the attic and down the cinder blocks in the garage. I also believe that the ceiling leak in the bathroom was coming from the chimney leak. After the repairs, the problems were resolved. I did not have other estimates for this job but believe the price was probably fair.

Shortly thereafter, the fireplace was still taking in water and basement ceiling tiles were wet. We called Smith several times. An inspection was made by them in December of 2013. Because of the ice and snow on the chimney, nothing more could be done until Spring. Starting in March, we called Smith many times to schedule a time for them to come back and fix the problem. They should have called us first. In any case, no call backs have been received, and the problem us still as bad as ever. If Smith wants to maintain in good standing on Angie's List, I would think they would act in a more responsible fashion than they have. No call backs and no service is inexcusable to me.
Description of Work: The problem we had was water leaking down into our fireplace through the chimney, and then leaking down into the basement under the fireplace as well. Smith Exteriors recommended they construct a chimney crown to protect against moisture damage. This service was performed for a fee of $360.

Response from Smith Exteriors
I have never responded to any review, however, feel this review merits a reply. We did in fact respond to a call with a leaking chimney concern and water in the fireplace. Water leaks are often the most difficult solutions to find a cause. It usually begins with any clear visual signs that could be contributing to the problem. At this house we had a couple of issues, and we did appropriate repairs. We returned a 2nd time after we were told they still had moisture in the basement and began looking deeper into what the correct solution was. We determined that the chimney wasn`t the only issue. It begins as a trial and error at this point. The customers understood our challenge and had confidence in our service, timely response and professionalism at this point, enough to have us return when the weather changed. They were billed and given the 10% Angie`s List discount. I did received one call in early March. I took the call as a friendly reminder as this area was still experiencing cold, wet weather and we were not able to do this type of work yet. We have communicated the weather issues, have responded on 2 separate calls, I understand the customer’s confidence in us and have done nothing to change that opinion to this point. As we spoke in the past, the customer is often not home and we were to return when we felt it was time. I planned to do just that, exactly like our 1st call. If we needed inside we would call and set that time, otherwise, we could return when it was best. I did fail to make this return call and do not use this as our excuse. I say these things as the review has always been based on the fact that I didn`t call and not the service. Shortly after this call in March, I received an email from Angie`s List about a review from a customer. To be very honest, I look at these reviews maybe once/twice a year and did not look at this review right away. I am confident in our work and never expected any poor reviews. I am usually not offended by any and certainly do not change the way I do business because of them. In a negative way. I have built a very strong relationship with customers and have a reputation of being honest and professional. I do understand that we can and do make mistakes and now realize I can use this tool to become better. I always address them immediately and we will continue to train and become better so that we avoid mistakes. In this case, the mistake we made was a communication let down and we will work to not allow it to happen again. I assumed something that I should not have. It was never about our service and I can still give a peace of mind that our work is thorough. I was awarded the Super Service of the year and have maintained an A on Angie`s List, becoming the top chimney company in the area. I am proud of that. I still, with or without Angie`s List continue to provide the best service I can. With reviews like this, I feel it unfairly lowers our results. I have thousands of customers (non Angie`s List) that I have exceeded their expectations and gone beyond what we were to do. I have made a living on my reputation and the good work we do. I joined Angie`s List and have 20-30 positive reviews and 1-2 that could change what I have worked long and hard for. Unfair. I did not call to be on Angie`s List. They called me, I didn`t see any negatives and it didn`t cost me money. Why not, so I joined. I never pushed for any reviews. Frankly, most of the time I wasn`t even aware if it was an Angie`s List customer, I only knew it was my customer. A very small percentage of our business comes from Angie`s List. I was not going to renew my membership, even with the Super Service Award, this year. I read this review and the negative affects became clear. Maybe Angie`s List does cost us money? Still, I will not back away from this review. It will make us a better company. I renewed. The only response I have ever given to these reviews comes now and this is why: I just again was notified by Angie`s List that my A rating was dropped to a B. I began to read these reviews as I ask why. When I read this, I thought, I do not want customers like this. Just as customers can read these comments, we too can. I believe this customer is also a local business owner as well. I feel those people should fully understand the challenges we face. Not make it more difficult. This was unnecessary. I only ever tried to help this person. To deliberately attempt to ruin a reputation, is a person I do not want to do business with. Yes, I did not call and I hope I have explained some of my thoughts to why. I admit that failure. You can simply decide to not call again. This review portrays a very negative experience. I understand the frustrations. I too am a consumer and have had similar experiences, we all have. I never misled or overcharged or provided poor solutions. Those companies do exist. You forget that you were happy and did ask us back. Twice. We responded twice and were going to come back as many times as it took. I failed to call you in your timeline. I am sorry you felt the need to rate our entire experience off of a missed call. I respect those that do work for me. I have been waiting months to have my trees cut, weeks to have my car fixed. As a business owner, I understand delays. It upsets me plenty, but I am not trying to ruin any reputations. I do not even do that to competitors. You should understand that. This poor rating will not hurt my company, I`m not worried. I only want you to understand that I take much pride and fully understand that my name is on everything we do. I do care how people think of us. I do constantly worry about doing the best work we can do. And on occasion, I forget to return calls. I have been in business for 15 years. I can honestly say that I have treated every customer with respect and have been fair and professional. I have thousands of customers. And I am confident that all would either call me back or recommend my name. It does bother me that one was not fully pleased. I am truly sorry. I will keep a closer watch on these reviews. This process is new to us. Our work and professional results have always made us different and we have set a high standard in the local industry. To date, I am still and always will be better than a D or F rating. I will learn from this and I hope that other customers see the commitment we have to their needs.

They did a really good job. He actually built the system with his own hands so now if our chimney gets any water in it, it won't go into the flue, it actually goes through his system and into our sump pump.

It all went well. They took their time, were careful and answered all our questions. We would definitely recommend them and use them again.
Description of Work: We purchased a natural gas, direct-vented fireplace insert that Bryan and crew installed. He was the lowest of three bids, (by more than $ 1,200.) with a fair price and professional service. They also repaired our chimney crown wash and cleaned the chimney before installing the new unit. This was a job that one other firm declined as too uncertain of outcome. Smith's was confident they could do it and price quoted was very competitive. Came promptly for site survey, didn't hem and haw about contingencies in the work, showed on time for work and was finished more quickly than initially estimated. First class experience. Mr. Smith clearly knows his business.

Smith Exteriors detected numerous conditions needing to be repaired with the chimney and e-mailed photos along with an estimate. Their cost for installation of a seamless stainless steel chimney liner was $400.00 above the cost of the installer we chose, Handyside who had previously done heating work for us.
Description of Work: There were no problems with the chimney cleaning. They were courteous and cleaned-up after the service and the cost of this service was in-line with what other's charge.

I am going back over our poor reviews and found this. Some would say a B is good. I read it and the C grade was given because of our price. Our estimate was compared to a Handyman or a heating contractor called Handyside. I do not know these folks and have nothing negative to say about them. I also do not know them as a local chimney company. I can explain price. We are a chimney company. Chimney professionals need to be educated in the industry and heavily insured. When you try to compare pricing between two companies that are neither insured nor trained the same, their expenses is different. Our pricing is very competitive among other chimney professionals. We will be beat every time by folks that are not properly insured as we are. We will be beat by companies that do not meet the proper training. These expenses affect our pricing. Our jobs are often much different. The different materials, the different install techniques. Chimney companies and professionals that do chimney work every day, is often much different then a handyman or a heating contractor. I see it all the time. Outside the chimney industry and properly trained, most people do not fully understand why the chimney liner is so important. Yes, it can be rather easily installed, but the overall expenses are often not cheap. Comparing businesses on price alone can certainly be misleading. Many factors.

The job went well overall--they were very responsive and the job site was clean. During Hurricane Sandy I had some leakage in the attic from one side of the chimney. Fortunately, I checked the attic during the storm and was able to channel the leak into a tub. I have called and talked with Smith Exteriors concerning the problem, but as of this date (11/5/12) no one has called to make an appointment to see the damage.
Description of Work: The brick outside exposed chimney was rebuilt and crowned, two caps were installed, flashing sealed. In addition, a flue liner was installed on a separate visit. Above price included all services.

I didn’t like that they were supposed to come at a certain time, but they came early and were up on the roof without even knocking on the door first. It kind of freaked me out because I didn’t know that they were there and I heard someone on the roof. I was talking to the guy as I had some questions when he wrote the estimate and I could smell beer on his breath which was enough to put me off. I didn’t want to use them for the chimney work. I didn’t know how their work was but they seemed professional enough with their knowledge. The guy who was on the roof knew what he was talking about, but he wasn’t the same guy that gave me the estimate. In terms of their punctuality, being early is always better than being late, but I would have liked if there was notification. I asked them if the doorbell didn’t work. I luckily came from the basement and I saw them out there and I also heard something funny.

I contacted Smith Exteriors along with two other contractors in the area for an estimate for my father-in-law, who wanted to have a clean-out trap and perhaps a stainless liner put into his chimney. Dad was impressed by Bryan and the information presented. Installation was on time and dad was pleased.

Bryan Smith was great to work with from start to finish. While my project might have seemed small to other companies I contacted, Bryan came in at the best price and in my opinion did the best job. He was willing to work with me through all aspects. His brother and another associate performed the actual repairs. They arrived in the morning and went to work right away. Because there were some unforeseen issues with the chimney they had to stay later. Bryan's brother waited until I came home from work, after 7:00 p.m. in order to let me know the progress of the repairs. They came back the next morning and completed the work in a timely fashion. Both men were courteous, knowledgeable and very nice to talk to. They were professional all the way. I was very impressed with the work done and so very appreciative for their help. Thanks Bryan, and thank everyone else, too!
