M&D General Contracting

It went great, the guys were really nice. They came when they said they would, didn't take them hardly any time to do the job.

On the positive side, Mario was professional and did the work in a timely and knowledgeable manner. We had received an earlier quote for the same from another local source (J.C. Roofing) that listed the work required (up to 3 - 4 x 8 sheets of roofing plywood) at $1250 and added repointing of the chimney above the roof line at $1525 ($2775 total) (In fairness M&D did not quote this as an add-on). The M&D price quoted was $4800 - considerably more than J.C. Roofing but he was available to do the work on Monday (He quoted the job on the preceding Saturday). My wife was convinced that the work needed to be done asap and we couldn't wait for the less expensive roofer. My concerns were highlighted further when he was asked to quote on a full roofing replacement and came in with a $22,000 estimate versus a price from another local roofer (called The Roofer) at $9,000 with up to 5 - 4x8 plywood replacement sheets needed. Mario also wanted $2,400 up front ostensibly for materials. I told him that was out of line but would go $1500 for materials (which for the size of the job performed amounted to approximately $200 at most.) As noted, the job was done quickly on Monday with Mario and 2 workers (one roofer extra and one utility "gopher".) They arrived at 9:30 am and finished the job at 3:30 pm. Assuming that it was an 8 hr day for all 3 roofers, that amounted to $175.00/hr per man + $400 for materials. (Used was a portion of one 4 x8 ft sheet of roofing plywood + felt paper and enough new shingles to cover the repaired area - as well as 2x4 and another 2x8 x probably 12 ft long - as well as roofing tar where the old "flashing" was re-used.) For this task, $4,800 was about 2 x what was proper even with the expedited scheduling. We all can realize that when it has to be done asap rather than working it into a schedule (as the low cost roofer appears to have done) then one has to expect to pay more. Thus, while one needs to recognize that M&D contracting did what was promised (and as far as I can tell after 2 rains, no roof leakage) it would have been better to wait for the other less expensive and more price realistic contractor. If price is no consideration, then M&D General Contracting would be a good choice for this type of job. If price is important, then look at the lower priced operator. As a 72 year old retiree that pinches pennies, to end up paying more than my and my wife's monthly social security and pension for one days worth of work for 3 men is a deterrent to use a boutique contractor.
