About 18 months after moving into a new home with a newish, central air conditioning system, lots of water started leaking from the unit, making a ton of mold in my closet. Called Polar Air and they charged me over $1000 to fix it. Polar Air repeatedly assured me that the unit was completely fixed and would not cause any more trouble. At that point, our insurance company tore out my closet, some other walls, and hardwood flooring for mold remediation and reconstruction. After using this unit for about 4 months more (over 2 summers), water began leaking again? I called Polar Air and someone came to look at the situation. He told me that I should not be charged for his visit because this new leak had happened because Polar Air had not fixed the unit properly after the first leak. He seemed very sorry and sort of worried about it. I was also told that Polar Air would not fix the unit until summer ended because my attic was hot (so I would need to suffer through July and August with no air conditioning). I am very busy with small children but I assumed that I would not be charged for this visit and went about dealing with the mold situation caused by the second leak. Then Richard snt me a bill for about $125 for that visit. I wrote him a letter, explaining what his worker had told me and telling him that I, of course, would not pay his $125 bill. He continued calling me and, after yelling at him several times, threatening him with legal action, having him threaten me with legal action, and him increasing the amounts he was attempting to charge me, I decided to pay him and write areview. I also called another air conditioning company, who told me that the way the unit had been fixed (by Polar Air) would inevitably lead to periodic, large leaks because the unit?s entire stand had to be replaced (and that would cost about $1200). It was cockeyed and not strong enough to hold the unit. They also temporarily fixed the unit for very little money in my hot attic, almost immediately. This leaves me also wondering what on earth Polar Air did for around the same money it would cost to install a whole new stand... Richard claimed that my system leaked a second time due to a lack of maintenance but, considering what his worker and the other company said, I know that was not honest.

Richard did lousy work and overcharged me for this service. This dragged on for months and although he knocked off $120 for the diagnostic test, he added a finance charge and the final bill is unfair. I tried to negotiate it on several occasions, but he is difficult to talk to and won't budge.
Description of Work: I had Richard repair a heating system under the floor that was not working. The hot water heater pumps hot water into a copper pipe under the floor which heats it. He came and found that the pump was not working so he ordered a new pump head and installed it when it came in, but found that it was the wrong part. He then installed a manifold that was wrong as well. This work started in November and lasted 4 months which resulted in no heat in the floor for the whole winter. Richard came back on April 1st and then told me that I had to replace the hot water heater. He should have figured that out months ago rather than nickeling and diming me, charging for service calls and hooking up the wrong parts, replacing them, all which I paid for. He is also charging for service calls for three men he sent for this job on different occasions because they didn't know what they were doing. Due to their negligence, I have an invoice for $3917.90.

Response from POLAR AIR CONDITIONING CO
This repair can be compared to the car that does not start. You repair the engine then the transmission does not work. You repair the trans and the rear axle is broken. You cannot know one is broken before you repair the proceeding. The member called me to have a pump repaired for his radiant floor system in his kitchen. My serviceman went to his house and noted the numbers of the failed device (not working). I spent the next month trying to locate the company that manufactured or sold parts for this pump (discontinued device). I did locate a former tech and he told me the manufacturer and model of the pump. After receiving and installing the pump motor, we found that the pump drive had also failed. We could not know this until the motor was installed. Please note that at this time we had filled the "empty" water tank and piping and bled off all the air in the system. At this time we noted that the manifold that connected all the pipes to the pump was leaking. Again I had to locate some company that may have had these parts on the shelf. After locating the parts, we again returned to install the manifold. This required draining the pipes and then refilling them and bleeding the air out. Because the pump drive was not repairable and no longer available, we relocated the pump to the basement and re piped the manifold. We refilled the pipes and bled them of air. We stood by to make sure there were no leaks and the water was getting warm. All appeared OK. We received a call from the member saying that the floor was not getting warm enough. As it turned out the old water heater had failed. We recommended replacement. The member supplied the water heater. We then installed it the correct way for the application for which it was to be used. Refilled the pipes and bled air, checked for leaks and proper operation. The member accused us of nickeling and diming him. He accused my men of sitting in their truck and not working, when he was not there. All parts we purchased for the repair were used. We never purchased incorrect parts. We never overbilled for any time. He was never there. His wife was the only person there. 11/6/07 1st call, completion 4/08. Total hours 18/ 2 men Service man 3 hours. My take, incorrect installation of the original equipment and a lack of maintenance.

I do have a contract with them and they come out two times a year for this. They come in the spring to make sure the air conditioner is set to go and then in the fall to turn on the gas furnace and replace the filters. I have used them for years and I think they are very reasonable. I pay them annually to keep their services. The service check went great this time as it always does.
Description of Work: I got a service maintenance check on my two zone heating and air conditioning unit by Polar Air.
