John did an excellent job. I called and explained my issues. He came and inspected my chimney and then told me what he needed to do. He then provided me a detailed estimate with options for different repair scenarios. He suggested getting other bids from competitors before making a decision. Once i agreed to the repair option, he set a date and how weather may dictate it taking longer. He showed up at the date/time he set and began working on my chimney. Due to rain in the forecast, he suggested that the work on the outside of the chimney would be delayed until later in the week. He returned as promised and competed the work. What stood out for me was the various positive reviews i had read from here and Google. When he arrived he removed his shoes at the door (i have hardwood floors) and not that i asked him to. During the work, he used tarps to cover the areas he was working in and worked diligently and quietly (except for the crumbling old liner he was removing). I felt completely safe with him in my home. He was punctual and straight forward about what he intended to do and what the price would be. I would definitely recommend him to anyone. fyi, I did not give a price rating due to the fact that i did not get other bids for the work. I cannot determine if the cost i paid is high or low. From the research i did, his reputation from other clients was quite positive and i made my decision off that. I am pleased with the work he did.

John was very knowledgeable due to many years in the field and having a background in building fireplaces. Cleaned the chimney without any dust coming into the home. Took his time to do things right and well. Replaced a rivet in the glass doors, waxed the track for easy movement and chipped away mortar that was blocking the damper (leftover from when it was built) He explained each step and made recommendations on chimney liner cracks. We plan to hire him again to fix the rest.

John took the time to explain the condition of our chimneys and what was necessary to do right now for safety. He also made recommendations for the future so we could budget those items. He was friendly and nice to work with. Would absolutely hire him again.

Mr. Baker arrived promptly at the time of our appointment and repaired the problem in less than 30 minutes. He was very professional throughout the time that he was with us. Note that he also called us on the day prior to our appointment to confirm (and as a reminder) that he was coming the following day. We were very satisfied with his work - and while we hope that we won't need his services anytime soon - we'd definitely call him again, and we'd highly recommend him to others.

Very well. John responded quickly and listened carefully to my description of the problem. He proposed sensible fixes to my problems, not large, expensive make-over jobs that other contractors proposed. He arrived on time, worked quickly, explained what he was doing, and left the site clean. He even offered to fix a badly installed AC drainage line. Highly recommended. We would definitely call him again.

John Baker is a class act and I will certainly engage his services again in the future. Very professional, courteous and reasonable. He pointed and sealed my chimney. I highly recommend John and his services. Please understand that the only reason I rated John a "B" rating is because I came from the service industry and I never rate the highest score because no matter what there is always room to improve regardless. There can never be complacency. As I stated earlier John has all my future work.

John was great to work with. Due to my travel schedule to the west coast, and being in all day meetings, John and I played phone tag for about a week, but John kept calling and when we did connect he had a opening 2 days later on a Saturday that worked perfectly, as my husband and I were again leaving on Monday for work. John describe what he would do and what the estimated price would be. The morning of the appointment, John called and said that he was running about 30 minutes ahead of schedule and would it be okay to come early. It was and he came right over. John was very professional and carefully laid out throw cloths, to protect the surrounding area. Even though it was raining, John went on the roof to inspect the chimney from that area. He provided us an assessment of the current state of the chimney and advised that he recommended a rain guard for the chimney, so that the rain wouldn't pour in. He advised that we could get one at a local hardware store and the estimated cost and said that they were not hard to install. He also said that he had one in his truck and could install it. We chose to have him do it. He was finished in about an hour with the entire appointment. He also said that based on our current usage, we should get it cleaned every 2-3 years. He was very easy to work with and professional.

The past two years we had birds nesting in our chimney. Bird scat came into our fireplace cavity. Three baby birds fledged in ourfireplace and we carried them outside. It was obvious we needed a chimney cap. We gathered estimates. R & R Masonry Restoration sent us an estimate of $900, based on our description. We thought this was too much. Then we contacted Professional Chimney Sweeps. John Baker said a chimney cap would cost $120 installed. We agreed on a date. He arrived on time, showed us the chimney cap, and installed it within half an hour. We are very satisfied with his work and cost.

John is very honest. He was the only one of four chimney sweeps I called who said he'd look at my blocked chimney without charging a fee for an estimate. He said he'd charge me about $200 (I forget the exact figure) to remove a blockage. When he looked at the chimney and tried to remove the block and couldn't (one visit), he charged me nothing, and instead give me an estimate that included breaking through the second floor, which was the source of the obstruction. (He complete all this work during his second visit.) John worked deliberately, at a good pace, with unwavering attention to the details, and he explained to me everything he was doing and why he was doing it. (I stood by him for the entire day watching him work.) For example, he told me that he was using type N cement (rather than type S) because of the soft brick of the old building. He told me that he was installing a sleeve around the flue vent for the water heater because the vent would expand and contact with the heat, and that the sleeve would preserve the mortar where the vent entered the chimney in the basement. He used used bricks rather than new bricks to match the style of the rest of the first floor fireplace. It's very helpful as a lay person to know not only what's being done but why it's being done. His mortar joints were neat and in the same style as the rest of the fireplace and living room. John is fearless. My roof is three stories high and dangerously steep. John worked up there like it was no big deal. (Working up there is a big deal because it's so steep and the chimney is high off the roof.) Jon's work, especially the masonry work, turned out beautifully. More over, he saved me hundreds of dollars by using patio stones to seal the four chimney flues, rather than some expensive, custom chimney cover that only the birds would see. In sum, John is excellent. You don't need to take time talking with other chimney sweeps on this site. Call John.
Description of Work: 1) Sealed a second floor fireplace above the firebox opening using a metal sheet and insulation. 2) Covered the tops of four flue openings using mortar and patio stones and repaired the mortar of the chimney top. 3) Broke through the floor of a first floor fireplace and laid new bricks and mortar in front of firebox so that a flue vent could be run from the chimney to the basement. 4) Ran flue vent and installed its cap on the top of the chimney and ran it to the basement, connected it to the hot water tank, and sealed up the hole in the basement chimney.

We had a critter in our chimney over the weekend and wanted to get a cap on right away. I called and left a message for John on a Saturday. First thing Monday morning he called me back and was able to fit me in on Tuesday. Thank goodness the critter was gone and John had a cap in his truck and was able to install it that day. He showed up on time, was extremely nice and professional and it did not take him long at all to install the cap. I am extremely grateful for the quick response and would definitely use him again.

John Baker promptly returned my initial call and followed up with a visit to our house for an estimate. John put forth the effort to go up on the roof to inspect the chimney before giving us an estimate. (Others only looked up from the ground at the chimney which is 3 stories up.) His price was very reasonable and he was courteous and professional in our discussions. John completed the work ahead of his original schedule. We were extremely pleased and highly recommend him.

Poorly. The provider came highly recommended to me by a neighbor. That family's experience was better than mine. I called on 11 February 2014 regarding a problem with water coming in to my fireplace. Mr. Baker said that he would come to evaluate the matter by 21 February, if not sooner, and that if I did not hear from him by then, that I should call, because it would mean that he forgot (not a good initial sign). After not hearing from him on or after 21 February, I called and left a message on 6 March: no return call as this date, more than three weeks later. I give up. I have found that it is a mistake to attempt to engage a contractor that must be hounded and begged to perform work. I wish Mr. Baker would have told me that he is not accepting new work. I have wasted more time in seeking to address the problem. Postscript: I was able to find a reputable and responsive company to perform the work that was needed, one which is highly rated on Angie's List. I secured an estimate within hours of making the initial call and the work was begun and completed within days despite winter weather. I was pleased to find that there are chimney/masonry companies that, unlike the Baker company, are willing to return calls and perform work.

John was outstanding. He was extremely courteous on the phone, worked with our busy schedule, showed up spot on time. Took care to put on house shoes, and put big blankets down to make sure that he didn't get the house dirty. He evaluated our fireplace and chimney, gave us several recommendations on how to use it, and suggested that we replace our cap with a top damper. But he wasn't pushy - he gave us the pros/cons for the cost and helped us make an informed decision. We were juggling guests at the time, and he struck that perfect balance of being helpful and informative, and also being invisible while he took care of the work. He explained how the new damper worked, gave us the old one and suggested we keep it (just in case) and even cleaned it off, and again gave recommendations on the best wood to use in the fireplace. He saw we had alot of woods and suggested if we wanted to cut/chop/split our own firewood how best to do it, how long it had to cure, what types of splitters to get, etc. Overall an incredibly nice person who takes his job very seriously, is professional, courteous, and will be the only person we ever use to clean/maintain our fireplace. Thanks John for all your help!!
Description of Work: We just moved into a new house and were having some issues with our fireplace - drafts and smells coming from the chimney, as well as smoke coming in sometimes when making a fire. Damper frequently would 'flip', and also wanted the chimney inspected for any other issues.

It was quite informing , a pellet stove was not an option in the chimney , the house is 100years old .although the chimney is in good shape it did not have a liner installed in those days , although a wood stove was once installed there a pellet stove burns to hot . John suggest ed a alternate site that worked well . The stove is installed and working well .
