Description of Work: Damon helped us out with a large post fire construction job with lots of different components. Great all around contractor with patience and flexibility, and a fantastic reference for anyone who wants to learn additional home improvement skills from their GC. We had a large loss fire in September '12 and initially bid the repair job to the remediation company. After dragging their feet on getting started for almost 2 months they totally disappeared after hurricane sandy. Several failed promises later and Damon emerged as the most qualified replacement. He was sensitive to our need to get the place back together quickly (my wife was 5 months pregnant at this point). We started by providing him with $21,000 worth of work which grew to approx $35,000 by completion as we kept adding other projects, which he was happy to accommodate. After the other company bailed we were lumped with subcontracting electric, plumbing, roofing, and carpentry, the latter of which Damon took care of. This was a challenge for inexperienced homeowners like us as scheduling/sequence can be taxing on both parties. Damon was understanding of schedule changes, happy to work on another project if plumbing wasn't ready, etc, and also did a great job of walking us through how certain jobs needed to be scheduled. Our house is a 130+ Victorian with tons of original detail and Damon was careful not to damage anything as others have. He also suggested techniques that kept with the look and feel of the home. Jobs included but we're not limited to: framing and installing new ceilings and walls, soffitting ductwork and plumbing, trim work, installing windows, masonry demo and rebuild (exterior window required building up several courses of brick), insulation, flooring, minor plumbing and electrical, painting, and a full kitchen install. Some minor downsides included schedule limitations, as he typically starts his day later but works until that days job is finished, sometimes until 9 pm. I preferred this with my restaurant schedule but it meant that coordinating earlier jobs was a little more difficult, and there were plenty of times that my mis-scheduling of other work negatively affected Damon so I didn't complain on days he got a much later start. He doesn't have his own crew so some jobs were pushed back when his temp help didn't show or wasn't skilled enough for the job. Several simple measures could have been implemented to limit dust and debris in unrelated areas of the house (basement and large room which housed all our stored belongings - most of which are still coated in drywall dust bc the drywall team he contracted didn't hang sheets etc). Certain add-ons were done for free and some seemed disproportionately expensive. All in all a great experience and Dampn was always willing to share his knowledge to empower us with skills we have already implemented on other projects. Highly recommended.

This was a very challenging, multi-faceted job. Dealing with water damaged radius plaster walls was a first for us and a very satisfying task to complete. We also painted the entire house, starting with spraying 30 gallons of oil primer to change the black or stained areas to white. We're sorry there has been issues with dust in the home, but the homeowner was warned and directed to cover any belongings with dropcloths before commencement of sanding and painting. It was our pleasure to pick up where some less-than-professional contractors began and carry this project to full completion. Being invited to the housewarming/baby welcoming party by the homeowner was one of my professional highlights for the year. Many thanks and best wishes! Enjoy!

These guys might do great contracting work, but I’ll never know. Evidently they have some issues with doing projects in urban environments that are heavily populated with minorities. I contacted someone from the company thru phone number given on this website. They seemed very interested in the project, as I explained what I needed done in order to get job complete. Everything was going well, until I informed them of the location of the project. After telling them city area where the project was located (which is a neighborhood in transition, rapidly becoming popular with young college student from neighborhood colleges), they quickly began making excuses and then flat out declined the project. The places & projects this company decides to pick & work is totally their own preference, but I highly recommend them in there ad’s to start informing customers that they only cater to certain people in certain areas.

It is a shame when someone takes a business decision personally - and this is an extreme case. There was no conversation about the job. I asked for the location of the job and immediately declined to give an estimate. The area in which the job is located is VERY dangerous and I choose not to put myself, my associates, nor my equipment in harm's way. We do not discriminate against people, but we certainly discriminate between the jobs we choose to associate ourselves with. We are a high-end restoration company - not a neighborhood re-development corporation.

They were good. They dug up as much as the other company I’m hiring did. I didn’t get the level of the account which the other company did. The other company came and discussed the project. Whereas they just wanted o take the measurement and give the price. It wasn’t personal. If you are spending that kind of money, you want it to be treated as their own project and their own home. They gave a choice of six inches. Whereas the other company said that they would check what the minimum height should be, so that it can withstand another weight. I knew that Renaissance Construction was just eyeballing me. As they just said six inches; what if it didn’t support the weight for it. They were not responsive. They were here when they said they would be here. They were professional. I would definitely let them come back and get done something else.
Description of Work: I used Renaissance Construction to get an estimate. I’m going to put a small deck at the back of the house. They came a week later than the other company.

I do not know who is responsible for the editing (or lack thereof) in this report, but it is a shame to blemish an outstanding record with this unreadable mess. This customer had a very small and uncomplicated deck project for which he said he was waiting AFTER tax time. Being very busy, I spent my time on more pressing projects. On April 15, after making several inquiries to get the special decking material quotes in order, I sat down with my notes to write the proposal and was met with this review. A few words to address the comments made - Tax season ended on April 17 this year. Therefore, I was early and you miscommunicated your timeline. In order to label someone 'nonresponsive' , you must have tried to contact them, which you did not. The only call was the initial one. I actually called twice to update and ask questions. Never at any time was I told of a need to move up the project. If you want to hire a professional, act professionally. We are EXTREMELY busy people and can only work within the parameters set for us by our customers - so please stick with the ones you have set. In regards to the comment stating we were 'eyeballing' - If we weren't serious about doing the work, we would not have said we were. We don't waste the time of others and we don't like ours wasted. All the best to you and to our customers who are making 2011 a great year so far !

We spoke with Damon Fall 2010 about a number of renovation projects on our home. WE found him here on Angies list and he was the only contractor we contacted that returned our call on the same day. At that time that time we planned on taking out the PhilaLoan and doing all the work at once. Damon came by a couple of times to look at our house, worked with us on the estimate and came up with a game plan that included working with a mason for our exterior brickwork. At that time we thought he was very knowledgable, professional, easygoing, had great sense of humor. When we had to change our plan and do the renovations one project at a time, Damon was equally fantastic about moving forward on our new schedule. Our first project, completed over a week in March, was creating a second doorway between our dining room and kitchen (hundred year old South Philly Rowhouse) for better airflow. When Damon discovered it was possible to remove the entire double brick wall, without compromising the stability of the house, we were very excited. This was what he had hoped for but didn't think was possible. We could now have a walkthrough passageway between the two rooms. As the work moved forward and things changed due to new discoveries about the house, Damon checked with us every single step of the way - letting us know what was going on, explaining the work needed and talking about potential prices differences BEFORE they happened so we could make informed decisions. His pricing is more than fair. In addition to removing the wall, Damon also rewired some electrical outlets, installed a new light fixture and rewired and put in a large ceiling fan -- ( note: we're talking old knob and tube wiring in the house that had to be replaced in some places). All throughout the process Damon was very careful and methodical, making test and exploratory holes that allowed him to see if the next stages were structurally possible. Damon and his assistant worked quickly, efficiently and tirelessly. They cleaned up after the job every day, leaving us access to the kitchen and making sure that dust and dirt were not spread throughout the house. Both Damon and his assistant are easygoing, very easy to deal with and have a great sense of humor. When we added small changes throughout the job Damon was flexible and professional - helping us to make the best choices. In the end we have a fantastic - better than hoped for - kitchen / diningroom passageway and plans to work with Damon again on the next step of our renovation later this summer.

See the above statements. That says it all.
Description of Work: Damon Moyer and the Renaissance crew did an excellent job. They repaired two roofs and the front porch. But, the more difficult task, which sent most construction crews running, was the back porch. They had to tear down and rebuild the entire porch and staircase. It had been concrete. They rebuilt it from wood. It was a long and arduous endeavor. They worked very hard through the harshest winter on record. All the while they were very professional and polite. They arrived on time and cleaned up before they left (each time). I would recommend them to anyone.

Damon was fantastic - we had a lot of smaller job, but needed a general contractor. He was great at communicating and fit our jobs in between larger jobs he had - if he got delayed, he communicated when he could fit us in at a later date. Our garage repair needed to be done before the snows came and he made sure everything was sured up to avoid any problems during the winter. Then, finished the job in a professional and fantastic manner this spring. Also replaced an outside door for us and corrected the concrete outside the door. Also replaced a roof overhang which a previous roofer had not done correctly - he took care to do the job right and now we do not have to worry about it. He was a pleasure to deal with - fair in work and price! We would not have any hesitation in recommending him. Thanks, Damon.
Description of Work: Replaced rafter in Garage, rafter in ceiling wall, put new rubber roof on garage; put new roof on back porch; hung new rear door (outside); repair work inside under porch roof; poured concrete block; general contracting work in garage repair to support outside wall.

Damon and I met at the property as was scheduled. Going through the basement and the 2 floors above, Damon offered many suggestion on how to deal with various issues. I could see that he is very flexible and creative in his approach and could implement many nice and workable ideas. About 2 weeks passed, before he sent me a price estimate of $127,000 with no further details. He had originally talked of about $60,000 which I knew was on the low side. He then upped it to $80,000 when we met. That latter price would have been ok. As it turns out, I found someone else who is doing nice quality work. My final cost of this renovation will be about $80,000, all included.
Description of Work: The house (built in 1930) required a complete renovation inside. About 2 years ago, the roof, floors where needed, windows, a solid back portion of the house (shed) with a roof patio, had been replaced. The front of this 2F, 1500 sqft row house had been redone recently for insurance concerns. What I needed for this renovation now included framing on 3 floors, insulation, drywall, painting, flooring, 2 kitchens, 3 bath, with separate electric, central HVAC, and plumbing for the 2 units.

Firstly, the initial pricing mentioned in the review was given on-site without any calculations and was obviously not meant to be quoted. You get what you pay for . In this case, the member elected to go with a contractor who wasn't getting the proper permits and therefore was able to underbid. The member also requested that we illegally convert a basement apartment into a bathroom without required permits. We do not do this, so we had to include costs for doing the job LEGALLY. Legal costs more! Good luck with your 'project' !

Damon did a very good job and was a pleasure to work with. He has good aesthetic taste and made several suggestions, such as using Azek rather than aluminum covered wood for the fascia, that improved the finished job. He was directly involved in building the structure and the stone veneer. The sub contractor Damon used for the foundations was not so good and I doubt he will use them again. When there is the inevitable problem, Damon is prepared to put it right. A vestibule solves several problems with a Cape Cod house like ours and we are well pleased with the result. Renaissance Construction is highly recommended.
Description of Work: Renaissance Construction is a small company run by Damon Moyer, based in Landsdowne PA. They built a vestibule for our house from my design, shown in the attached photo, during the last few months of 2010.

I cant say enough about Damon and his desire to strive for quality restoration work. I am also a contractor and I specialize in Masonry Restoration so I know how dificult it can be to restore rather than tear out and install new. Damon has also done a few new construction projects for me and his quality there is also unmatched, but his resoration work is really where he shines. If you're looking for a good carpenter who actually cares about detail..call Damon. He stands tall above all of the many 'hacks" that infest the carpentry trade.
Description of Work: I have used Damon several times for a number of projects. They include restoring a 120 year old cornice and the woodwork on windows and doors on a row home in South Phila. Damon was great on this job. He took the time and care to look for the missing pieces of wood and his installation and restoration was flawless. Other carpenters wanted to tear out the beautiful old wood work and put in new stuff, but Damon insisted that restoration of the old wood would keep up the integrity of the old house. He was right. The front is now the nicest on the block. He also restored a wrought iron gate in an arch window opening where we replaced the brick work. Once again Damon proved that restoring the old work was better than installing new. Other projects that Damon has done for us includes interior molding restoration and painitng and installing a tin ceiling in an otherwise boring and drab living room.

Of the 3 contractors who gave us estimates, Damon had the best combination of price and personality. He is very conscientious and takes pride in his work. He explained the process well and was very communicative about any problems that came up. He also made me laugh which was nice because I tend to worry and stress about things like walls being torn out in my house. We knew the project would be a bit of a beast; it involved the undoing of things that the previous homeowners who installed the powder room had not done correctly. We are very appreciative of the care that went into doing things correctly and are very happy with the finished product.
Description of Work: The powder room in our finished basement had to be dismantled when a French drain with a sump pump was installed last autumn. We hired Renaissance Construction to re-build the powder room in a new configuration and create a small closet to enclose the sump pump. The work included the demolition and replacement of walls, insulating the new walls, moving 2 electrical outlets and 1 light fixture, installing a platform for the toilet, installing the toilet, moving a pedestal sink to a new location, installing and grouting ceramic tile, installing 3 access panels for meters, cutting and installing new baseboards, and hanging 2 bi-fold doors (which involved cutting the doors down since we have a 6ft. ceiling in the basement).

Damon arrives on time, communicates very well about timing of appointments, and steps along the way. Highly professional, he puts you at ease that job will be completed on time, or early, efficiently, with excellent craftmanship, and in addition, he will help you prevent further damage to/in house. He called after completion to make sure that water leakage prevention measures were still holding up. I have never experienced such conscientiousness with any contractor, including putting on a large addition 8 years ago. Where was Damon then? Thank-you Angie's List and thank-you, Damon. Damon and his crew arrived on the first day, explained the general plan for completing the work, moved all of our furniture (carefully as we had just had our wood floors refinished) and began to prep the walls in each room. Each day, they moved our furniture back in place, sweep the floors, and told me the plan for moving forward the next day. We feel very comfortable with Damon as he has completed other construction projects for us, so we gave him the key to our house. He and his crew cleaned and left each day and if they left before we got home from work (about 6 or 7pm), he always connected with me via phone or text (which is great and I prefer!) and told us the progress for the day and the plan for the next day. They finished the entire job in about a week a half and he attended to each detail that I requested. Damon and his crew are professional and fun and they recognized that we are living in the same space they are working in, so they really made sure to help us keep our living space clean and put back each evening and over the long weekend (including Thanksgiving). We LOVE the final work - our walls look great, they do not cut corners and even go beyond the norm to get to hard to reach places behind the radiators, etc. The floors look great and we love the laundry installment. It works perfectly. The toilet is once again functioning and we are looking forward to hiring their company in the future to re-finish our bathroom totally. Damon's prices are fair, his work/craft is exceptional, and his crew are all great. We are happy to have found Damon and are relieved to have a contractor we trust to work in our house when we are not even there! I highly recommend his company.
Description of Work: Damon and his crew (Joe and Robert) prepped and painted our kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and the stairwell/stairs (risers and trim) from the first to the third floor in a little over a week. Our house is very old, so they needed to do a lot of prep work (caulking and sanding) and we used very bright and vibrant colors (deep reds, greens, yellows) that required more attention to priming, etc. In addition to the prep and painting, we had three other small jobs that needed completing - re-setting a toilet in one bathroom (it was rocking back and forth), attending to two places in our wood floors that needed some carpentry repair, and hanging a complicated laundry pulley system which I had purchased online.

Damon came the day he said he would be here and has made sure we know the daily work plan and weekly work schedule before he leaves each day. Damon is collaborating with Carl Yockey, our mason who we have contracted through Angie's list (and have used before on our basement - he is incredible!!) to utilize the masonry scaffold to do our wood work on the windows and the cornice. Carl recommended Damon for the restoration work and we have been really impressed by his professionalism, friendliness, and incredible attention to detail and craftsmanship. He has two additional workers who have helped with different pieces of the job and both Will and Sergio have also been very professional and friendly. They leave the job site clean each evening and they work quickly. A real plus for us is that Damon works with wood shops in local towns (like Ephrata) to design and build pieces that we need for our job so he was able to help us restore our wood to the original condition, without being too expensive. In addition, I really appreciate that Damon tries to shop at local independently owned hardware and wood shops rather than patronizing hardware stores. We have been so impressed with Damon's work on the windows, door, and cornice that we have contracted with him to return and do an extensive amount of interior work - including re-plastering our walls, prepping, and painting the stairwells of our house and to completely renovate two rooms. I would recommend Damon for any exterior work and as soon as we have completed our interior work, I will submit a new review of the interior work.
Description of Work: Damon removed metal siding from around windows and covering wood cornice on our 3-story row home. He repaired and replaced the wood around the windows and repaired and replaced missing wood applications (spheres and bull's eyes) on the wooden cornice. He also stripped and repaired the front double doors and replaced damaged wood with new. Then he painted all of the wood work on the cornice, windows, and doors. In addition, he is building a custom wood window to replace our basement window and is having the iron grate re-finished and re-anchored into the window box. Finally, he repaired or restored all door hardware (knobs, mail slot, kick plates) with brass furnishings.

When this review was first written, there was no place to leave a reply- so I am writing this response five years later! This job was the beginning of an extensive relationship with the homeowner. They were absolutely great to work for and we did approximately $25,000 worth of work for them over the course of almost 4 years, until they had to unexpectedly sell the house due to a career change and move overseas. The house had been the victim of many bad remodeling/painting jobs in its 125 year life, and it was a pleasure to restore it to its original glory. We repaired and skim-coated most of the ceilings and some of the walls in this massive 6 bedroom, 5,000 sq ft. home. We did several different types of work here- beginning with carpentry and painting (a company record of 26 different colors used in this house!), and including plumbing, electrical, roofing, and metal work. We are extremely grateful to this homeowner- not only for the extensive amount of work given to us, but also because she took the time to register us here on Angie's List. This website has made the difference in the success of our business. Many thanks to All!
