It was very easy to schedule and their professionalism was fine. The pricing was strange. They price things per job not per hour. The prices were high with them.

As I'm sure you experienced, our technicians provide the price of the job to the exact penny before proceeding with any work. We do this so that we avoid any misunderstanding with the customer and to be as transparent as possible about the cost. When we have completed the job, the price does not change. There is no guess work, or underestimated hours, or hidden fees, or cost we hadn't figured on by the end of the job. The job will cost exactly the amount that was first quoted even if it takes 3 hours more than we had expected. He was very professional and I had no problems with the communication or quality of work but was just stunned at how much it cost.
Description of Work: I have a very flexible schedule and scheduling was not a problem with them. I had a couple things in mind for the work. I would have liked to have had a light installed from the garage into the kitchen. That would have been very expensive. There were already three pull chain lights on a beam in the basement and he charged me $217 to add another onto the same beam in the basement. Once he had deducted the coupn there was still a $41 fee remaining.

They were very prompt and did a fine installation job.
Description of Work: I had originally hired them to install a ceiling fan, but a faulty cut-off switch to my furnace took precedence. They also had to rewire a junction box which looked like a rat's nest form the 1920s.

Details above!!!! I only got three light switches replaced for a total bill of $280. Ridiculous rate for minimal work. Do these guys do brain surgery in their space time? Please contact me if you have any questions, I have the receipt to show you that confirms this entire rant. Do not use this service. I was very much taken advantage of by this coupon.
Description of Work: I purchased a $49 coupon for $249 of work via Angie's List. What I actually received was a whole lot of nothing. I wanted to have Mister Sparky complete three simple jobs. I estimated that they might have taken about 1 hour total to complete. I thought that I could get these three projects done for the $249 but not even close. You see, these folks charge a $73 fee just to show up, that is deducted from the $249. When I showed the electrician the jobs, he proceeded to tell me that his company charges by the service function and not by the hour to "save me money". He told me that the costs for my work would be as follows: I wanted three light switches changed out from beige to white. The cost would be $71 per switch or $213 for that joband I supplied the new switches, next I wanted two light fixtures replaced in another bathroom - cost $108 per fixture or $216 for both, lastly - I wanted an outside porch light to be better secured - no new light but just securing the fixture to my wall - cost $120. So my three simple, straightforward projects wold have cost me $622 total with the just show up fee. I could only afford the replacing of the three switches and even with that I had to pay an additional $31 out of pocket. This work took all of 15-20 minutes tops. So I paid a rate of approx. $800 per hour based on 4, 15 minute increments or $600 per hour for 3, 20 minute increments. Does that sound reasonable to anyone? I call this a supreme rip-off! Do not use these guys and ask for a refund from Angie's if you already bought one. You will see what you get and it isn't much.

When you scheduled the big deal, we communicated the $73 service call fee to you using the Angie’s List message center. As I mentioned in that notification, the Big Deal that you purchased could be applied towards that charge as well as any work done. It is our goal to be upfront with our pricing before proceeding with any work so that you know exactly what to expect. Any customer is always welcome to decline service if they feel that it is not the direction they want to pursue. In this case, I understand that the electrician on site was able to review the prices before doing any work. Our prices are reflective of several things, a few of them being: the quality of the parts, the quality of the workmanship, the skills and knowledge of knowing what and how to accomplish the task, and a 1 year warranty on our work. At the end of the job, we want our customer to not only be satisfied with the work performed, but to have peace of mind that it will be safe and function exactly how they expect it to work. I understand that you provided the switches in this case, and we were happy to reduce the price accordingly. Our goal is to provide each customer with world class customer service for their electrical needs. I understand that you do not feel that this was achieved in this case, and as such, we have voided your check for $37 and will be mailing it back to you. Guy was great...friendly, professional, helpful.....then he told me price after all work done (only was there maybe 2 hrs)No problems encountered when installing lights. Cost: approx. $800.00!!! Seriously, AND I had a special deal!! I had him speak to his boss. He did get price decreased for me, but why did it have to go like that? Good reviews. Good guy, BUT the prices are toooo steep!!

It was a pretty routine process. The technician was on time, very professional, and did a quality job. However, I disliked that he tried to sell me on additional services that seemed unnecessary, and the price was much higher than I anticipated.

Very professional and courteous. Discounted offer ended up being same price as non-discounted estimate provided by local contractor, however, so there was no savings benefit. Technician offered various monthly maintenance service plans at end of visit.

It took two trips and I had to buy a special contract to get the price I did or it would have been even more money. The man was very professional and I don't blame him for the high cost.

This is a provider where you get what you pay for, professionalism.
Description of Work: General electrical work removing some knob and tube, fixed a short from the basement to the doorbell, fixed the short to three or four outlets around the house. The young man they sent out was a journeyman electrician and he did every job very well, was polite, professional, and knowledgeable. We will use this company again.

We had purchased a big deal for the service, and it worked out okay. The issue that we had was that they didn't say that there would be an additional charge for them to come to our house, and so we were already down that much on our big deal amount. The person who came out was very nice, and it wasn't his fault. We just think the coupon was misleading. We purchased the big deal for 99 Dollars, for 300 Dollars worth of service, and when they came out, we were left with only 200 Dollars, as they charged us 100 Dollars to come out. The guy who came out was very personable, and professional.

They were quick to respond and set up an appointment. The technician showed up on time and did a thorough inspection. I paid $73 for travel, which I was not ware of. I had to email them to get the report. When I first called to get it, I was told to use the estimate as the report, but since I am selling the house, I do not think the bank would accept. Overall, it was good experience, but there were those couple of things they could improve on.

My main reason for calling Mr. Sparky was to have the 110 amp service lined repaired. Not being able to get that accomplished without was a major disappointment. The service tech said there was a $70+ service call fee. I told him that the scheduler had waived that fee when I reminded him that this was an Angie's List Big Deal coupon job. He had to call the business owner to confirm this was so. The fee was in fact waived. Dealing with the scheduler was a bit disquieting. While he was very polite and made every effort to be responsive, I had the feeling that I was dealing with a Call Center in India. There were frequent delays while information was retrieved and the person on the phone sounded like he was reading from a canned script. No big deal, just not what I'm used to when dealing with local repair services. We agreed to a 9am-2pm service call window the next day, which is actually today. At 7:30am we were awoken by a staff member from Mr. Sparky asking if it was OK to come right now, as they'd had a cancellation. Unfortunately, my wife works 'til midnight and often doesn't get to sleep until after 1am. So the early morning call was disruptive. This may seem petty, but my wife's a nurse and she needs and treasures her sleep time. The business model of Mr. Sparky is very reminiscent of Remco. Both companies have high service call rates and sometime during the visit they will ask to do a complete home inspection and then hit you with some outrageously expensive list of things that just have to be fixed right away. Both companies have and push a membership program where you get a discount on services if you're a member. Both companies charge by the job, and not time and materials, making it very difficult to accurately gauge whether you're being treated fairly or not. Needless to say I was very disappointed in the overall Mr. Sparky experience and have no plans to continue a relationship with them. Note: Ben, the service tech was prompt courteous and outgoing. He did a first class job of installing the ceiling fan light kit.
Description of Work: Service tech checked to see what was needed to splice a 110 service line running from my house to my workshop in the backyard. Tech said that that task would cost between $400 and $1000+ to do. Installed one ceiling fan Light Kit, fan was previously installed so only the light kit installation was performed.

I regret your dissatisfaction in your experience with Mister Sparky but I wanted to assure you that we do care about our customers. I researched the entire call by listening to the initial appointment booking phone call and discussing the job with the electrician who had been on site. In doing so, I wanted to address some the concerns you listed in your review. First, let me thank you for purchasing one of our Big Deal’s offered through Angie’s List. The $200 of electrical service for $99 (found here angieslist.com/thebigdeal/default.aspx?storefrontitemid=142226&source=4&forceSync=1) has been a popular deal as I’m sure you can imagine. In offering this deal, we do still access a service call fee as is listed in the fine print. However, we were willing to waive this fee in this particular case and include it in the repair. The gentleman who answered the phone acknowledged this during the call, but I apologize that the information must have been lost in translation to the electrician on site. I’m glad that we could get this resolved. I listened to the call of your initial appointment and I was more than satisfied with the call from start to finish. However, we are always looking to improve, so if you could offer some insight into why the scheduler was disquieting, we would be happy to hear your suggestions. As to the delays, the scheduling software we use is web based and can be affected by internet traffic. I apologize if this was an inconvenience. In scheduling our customers, we try to provide top notch service from the initial call to the electrician leaving your home. One of those services is on time appointments. Sometimes our schedule frees up during a given day and we offer earlier appointments to our customers just as an option. I apologize that our phone call woke your wife up from her sleep. We were not trying to be disruptive, but wanted to offer an earlier appointment to you in case it would be more convenient. I’m sorry that you were not satisfied with our pricing for the main service line repair. In speaking with the electrician who was on site, he was able to shed some light upon the situation. The service line traveling from your home to the shed (underground) had been cut by a previous contractor and we were there to make the repair. The service line assumedly was contained within a PVC pipe system that had also been broken. Unfortunately, since the line had been severed by a back hoe 2 years earlier, we ran across some problems in trying to make a repair. 1. The PVC pipe had become filled with dirt and mud and the wire was no longer able to be located at the location of the break. 2. Due to the line being severed by a piece of equipment, we were concerned about potential damage that had occurred to the line besides the obvious break (such as stretching the wires or disrupting the line in other locations). I believe our electrician explained some options to you regarding multiple splices in the line and the extra labor it would take to locate the wire by digging back the pipe line in both directions. I understand that this cost was not within your plans, but we would be happy to provide service in the future if you decide otherwise. Lastly, our pricing structure (by the job) is setup to provide exact amounts as opposed to guesses on any particular repair. We provide straight-forward, up front pricing on our jobs before any work is done to ensure that the customer knows exactly where they stand. We prefer to work this way instead of providing a loose estimate that could increase by the end of the job. Our safety inspections are a very important part of our service. Unfortunately, recent history has indicated that insurance companies will look to the last contractor on site if there is ever an incident. This is not your problem, but it is something that we offer as a safety service to our customers and as a protection to ourselves. Thank you again for your review and feedback. Mister Sparkey showed up to do the work, however the utility company held up the project when they found a problem with the service lines to the houses in my area. After waiting a couple of months for the utility company with no results, Mister Sparkey changed out the circuit panel but sill has to wait until the utility company responds before they can complete the work. Mister Sparkey offered to do some extra work at the house (installed smoke detectors) that was unexpected and appreciated. I will use them again as long as the price is competitive.
Description of Work: Circuit panel and meter replacement. The job is still ongoing, but the hold up seems to be with the electirc service provider who found a problem with the service connections to my house and neighboring homes - not because of Mister Sparkey.

When I Spoke with someone at Mister Sparky to set this appointment up i was told that the engineer would arrive within a four window 8 to 12 but i asked if he could be here at 8 so i could get to work after the installation and i was told yes. The engineer from Mister Sparky was Ben and he arrived at 8 as I was told he would. He looked over the breaker box and then explained what he would be doing. Ben did tell me that it was recommended that a separate surge protector be installed on the air conditioning outside the house and that made sense so I agreed. When Ben finished with the installation of both surge protectors he showed me the work and told me how the surge protectors worked. Last summer there was a lightening strike nearby that burned out my garage door opener and I am glad I don't have to worry about that again.

During the initial whole house inspection, Ben Smith from Mister Sparky, discovered that the outside wires and cover over the wires leading into our home (running from the top of the side of our house down to the power box) had dried out through the years and had split open exposing frayed wiring. Ben explained the danger of this situation. Upon his inspection of our junction/fuse box he explained that it was now obsolete. It was the original fuse box when the house was built. Ben was very thorough explaining the repairs required and also the different procedures and payment options to complete these repairs. Ben also explained protection policies for electrical and plumbing work we could purchase. He explained these options were entirely up to us and he applied no pressure to purchase them. We contracted with Mister Sparky to have our electrical issues repaired due to our experience with Ben Smith. Ben assured us he would be the electrician to do the repairs. Good! Because my husband and I were so impressed with Ben's professionalism that we did want him to do the repairs. Ben returned a few days later with an associate. Dustin I think was his name. Both were very professional and courteous. Ben explained what they were doing prior to turning off the electric to the house and each step they were doing in order to keep us informed in the process. They removed all of the worn exterior cover and wiring and replaced with new up to code products. They also removed our old fuse box and installed a new up to code one with additional fuses should we want to add additional lines in the future. After this installation they went through the entire house checking all outlets and lighting to ensure everything with working correctly and carefully marked the proper locations in the fuse box. Grounding rods were also driven into the ground. All debris was cleaned up after the completion of all work both outside and inside the house. Covers were worn over their shoes also at all times when inside to ensure cleanliness on our carpets and floors. Bottom line is this. Ben Smith of Mister Sparky performed excellent electrical work on our home. We would not hesitate in the future to use Mister Sparky again and will request Ben Smith as our electrician/technician if we want any additional work done.
Description of Work: I initially contracted with Mister Sparky thru Angie's List for a whole house electrical inspection. Ben Smith was the electrician/technician who came to our home and did the inspection. Ben was very thorough and did find a major issue. Ben was very professional and very informed about the electrical issue(s) that we chose to have the repair work done by Mister Sparky. We wanted Ben to do the repairs because we really trusted him after this initial contact. Ben Smith is definitely an asset to Mister Sparky.

After I paid for and printed out the coupon from Angie's List , I called Mister Sparky for an appointment. the receptionist seemed unaware of the coupn offer, but I made it clear that we wanted 5 outlets replaced for $99 total, per the coupon. She set up the date . The electrician showed up on time, was presentable, polite , and said he had no problem with any of the outlets we wanted to have replaced. He did the job efficiently (and "speedily"). The problem came when he presented a bill and said that , while the outlets replaced would be $99, we would also have to pay $74 for the service call. When we disputed this, he made several calls to the office. At one point he said that the coupon did not say there would not be an additional cost for the service call. We refused to pay the service call fee and, after an additional call, he said his boss agreed that, since the language of the coupon was unclear, we would not have to pay the $74. We thanked him for his good work and he departed. We feel strongly, that future coupons should make it very clear that service call or other fees, in additon to the advertised offer, may apply. We were troubled that we had to pay for the coupon before getting all of the details from the provider. Finally, the receptionist should be aware of the coupon offer and any extra fees, especially when the caller has said they want to pay only what the coupon offered.
