Response from Jim Brouse Home Improvement
I do not understand this report. I personally worked on her condo in center city installing shelves and repairing doors. One of my men performed work at her home for several days and she reported to me that she was very happy with the work both times and would use us in the future.

First, I rejoined Angie’s list recently and was shocked to see Jim Brouse advertising. Jim Brouse informed me back in 2010 that he had gone out of business and thus could not complete my work, like replacing the rotting garden door he had installed (he used an interior door that rotted within a month), properly sealing the plaster work they had done on the façade (it began chipping almost immediately), cleaning the marble sills as promised, or even picking up his equipment (like a 20 foot aluminum bridge which is still lying in my yard). In terms of the job itself, I initially hired him in for exterior painting and to figure out why a 3rd floor bathroom wall was leaking. We decided that the back siding, which was very old asphalt shingle, needed redoing so he pulled basically the entire exterior rear of the house, found no insulation had been placed underneath, and so rebuilt it with insulation and then plastered the exterior. So far so good (thus my overall of ‘D’, rather than ‘F’). However, during this process his main workman not only began to smell of whisky but twice got into arguments with the city garbage men, screaming racial epithets and nearly coming to blows (I finally had to ban him from the job, Jim did not remove him voluntarily). To fix the leak, Jim’s men did a large amount of resealing on the roof and rerouting of drains but instead of making it better, it caused a huge leak into the 2nd floor that collapsed half the bathroom ceiling. When I finally climbed up to the roof, I found up they had left a large seam entirely unsealed allowing water to pour in (I had to point this out). Although they sealed this section of roof, they never did fix the initial leak—indeed now it leaks regularly in the second floor wall as well (I’m having still to find money to start with another company), nor did they repair the interior damage before supposedly ‘going bust’ (in fact, though it was obvious that they had caused the damage, Jim would never admit to it). Altogether Jim Brouse worked on my house for nearly a year, at huge cost to me, he left it not only unfinished but also in worse interior repair than when he began.
Description of Work: roof repair, gutter repair, deck building (from scratch), residing (removing shingle, adding insulaton, and finishing with plaster), trim and door painting, exterior door replacement, interior wall sealing (or attempt thereto), soffit resealing etc.

Angie and company - given my history with this service provider, I don't want him in my house. If he can't run his business, or communicate effectively, I am very concerned that he would be able to take care of the work he would be assigned to do. I would like a refund of the $299 I paid for the Big Deal.
Description of Work: In August, 2011, I purchased a Big Deal from Angie's list: $299 for a day of Handyman services from Jim Brouse, handyman. I knew I would need to save money to provide for supplies for Mr. Brouse (my partner had been out of work until January and every penny counts when you're down to one income) so, when I had the funds together in January, I contacted Mr. Brouse through the contact link on Angie's List on January 9. In my message, I detailed the work I would like to have completed and gave a range of dates I was available before the coupon was to expire--on February 11. I was reassured when I received a text message from Mr. Brouse saying he would be in touch, and not to worry about the expiration date as he would honor my coupon "at any time." I next heard from Mr. Brouse via email on February 7, asking that I call him. I reached him on February 8, we spoke about the scope of my tasks, and set an appointment for Monday, the 13th at "9-ish." On February 13 at 10:30 am, Mr. Brouse had not yet arrived and I called him. He told me a long sad, story of how he had lost his appointment book, had phoned everyone he could think of, but just didn't know where he was supposed to be that morning. He went on at great length about how upset he was and, while I felt badly for him, was a little put out that he didn't focus on the effect on me and my family (taking the day off, waiting for him, etc.). I finally did mention this, and he finally apologized. We reset a new date for today, 2/23 at 8:30 am - the next day I could get off work. He assured me his standard practice is to call the night before to confirm the appointment and to show up at the time promised on the date promised. I received no phone call last night to confirm the appointment, so I called Mr. Brouse at 8:30 pm, I left a message with the date and time and asked for a return call by 9:30 pm or I would consider our appointment canceled. I didn't hear from Mr. Brouse until 7:10 this morning. He said that his phone is on voice mail from 7:30 pm to 7 am and so he did not get my message until this morning. He told my partner he was "going to come today." I did not want to be subject to waiting for this very unreliable person again, and canceled our appointment.

A little phone tag at first, they are busy. Once we agreed to the job, they were prompt. They estimated 5 days (short 1-4 hr visits). they did the work over a weekend, started (estimate and measurements) Friday, completely done by Tuesday. Did a very good job sealing area off from rest of the house and keeping dust in from work site. Worker always called before showing up. finished the job meeting estimate. Very good experience would recommend highly.
Description of Work: 1st floor Bathroom had leak in ceiling and water damage, black mold. Worker removed the bad drywall, checked framing for other problems. replaced the drywall in ceiling. Puttied, sanded and painted 2 coats. Also hung a medicine cabinet on the wall that was too heavy for us to lift.

After a lengthy period of communication problems, Jim and I met, cleared up some misunderstandings and he finally performed the agreed-upon work. The deck repair and grab bar installation were completed to my satisfaction and I assume the roof repair was as well (although I won't be climbing up there to check it). We agreed that in the spring he will clean and seal the deck.

While the initial services had a few problems, such as they lost my phone number and had trouble getting back with me. The completed work was good. The kitchen cabinets look great and they even went to the store to purchase more knobs because I didn't have enough for the job. All other projects completed from my to-do-list was acceptable and they made additional suggestions for work that should be accomplished in the future. Despite the original problems, I would recommend their service to others.

I thought he was very good. He was very informative and helpful. He was very attentive to detail and made a repair without my request. He was professional, prompt, and efficient. His helper was also very professional. He will come back to put a coating to help bring the temperature down in my home during the spring. He brought a crack on my roof to my attention. I was very happy and pleased to know about the issue. I would recommend his services.

I have not been able to complete this service. The company first indicated that the were behind with service contract, which I could understand. I was willing to wait for the service, as long as they could give me an estimated date. They could not do this, I was instructed to email my list of handyman duties and they would call me. I never received that call, and had to submit an email through Angie list to contact the company. This time they responded quickly and scheduled my appointment. However on the day of the appointment, they indicated that the service man had injuried himself the night before and could not come for the handyman scheduled for that day. They indicated again that they would call me with an alternate date. As of yet, I have not received a phone call. It has been almost 3 months since I paid for this service and still have not completed any service to date. This company needs to work on there ability to provide service.

this was a terrible experience, if i had read the reviews beforehand i would have thought twice about the "special deal". Mr Brouse came out as scheduled on 10/17 b/c i asked him to remove my door frame so i could get a refrigerator inside. He removed the door from the hinges, but it wasn't wide enough. He agreed to come out the next morning to complete that portion of the job. In the meantime he put blinds on one window and his friend partially replaced my ceiling fan. Then they removed two very small wall pieces and patched the drywall. This apparently amounted to 8 hours of labor. Mr Brouse came out the next day as agreed, took off the door frame as requested, hung blinds on one more window and mounted a hose reel in the back. This apparently amounted to another 8 hours of labor and he charged me $450. he promised to come back to finish the job. It took over 2 weeks to get him to return and replace my door frame, so i had air blowing in, which happened during the freak snow storm. He must have lost the parts to my storm door, b/c it was not hung back up properly and the pivotal piece is missing, so now its very difficult to open my door. he never did fix the fan. It took another 2 weeks for him to come back and hang the blinds on the third window, but i guess he didn't feel the need to fix the door or the fan. It would be hard not to notice the problem with the door. So i had to hire another repair man to fix the job he botched up. Mr. Brouse was always very nice, but if he had any conscience, he would either finish the job or send my money back. But honestly i just don't ever want to see him again b/c who knows what it will cost me, best to cut your losses while you can.
Description of Work: took door frame on/off, partially replaced ceiling fan, hung blinds on 3 standard windows, mounted hose reel, removed 2 small items from kitchen wall; then i had to hire a handyman to fix the door he broke and finish replacing the ceiling fan

I put off a regular clients job twice to accomadate the ladys delivery of a refridgerator that she told me needed x inches of room to get in. I opened the doorway to that size and the delivery men said it wasnt large enough. I then had to come back another day and did the deconstruction of the doorway to the deliverymans satisfaction.I dont think this person has any idea the amount of time I spent on her behalf. The handyman special is 1 man for 7 hours or 2 men for 3.5 for 299. we spent a total of 18 man hours on this job. The door frame had been cobbled together on a privious rehab and was glued in with construction glue which ment it came out in little broken pieces and then had to be replicated. The ceiling fan she purchased required the mounting box to be re framed into place. The blinds she bought had to be returned to be trimmed, trice, All of this required 6 trips to her house, this alone is over 10 hours of drive time. She never said a word about any problems with me or comlained about the door not working properly ps she still had an outstanding balance of payment to me.

Brouse sent one of his assistants to our home to discuss the work that needed to be done which included (1) replacing five boards on our cedar deck (2) pressure washing and sealing the deck and railing and (3) installing a grab bar in a tile shower in our master bathroom. I was told I could expect an estimate in 2-3 days. With no response after a week I called to ask about the estimate and left a message. With no response after several days I followed up with an e-mail asking if he planned to provide an estimate. I never received the courtesy of a reply to either communication.

When we bought the house, there was a drop ceiling in the laundry room, which had originally been a porch that had been enclosed. The drop ceiling was hiding water damage to the original ceiling, though it looked like the leak wasn't ongoing. Well, after a tremendous rainstorm, enough water got in that we needed to fix it, ASAP. My dad and I started demo on the drop ceiling and roof, but when we got inside, it looked like it was going to be a much larger project than we had anticipated, basically a full roof replacement, and possibly the exterior wall of the house as well. So, we called in a pro. Jim came out the next day, gave me an estimate (which was $2500, I think), and his guy (whose name I have forgotten) came out the next day to start the work. And the confusion began. Basically, it didn't sound like Jim and the guy who actually did the work talked much. The work got done, and well, which I want to emphasize. However, the time that the guy was supposed to start would come and go, no guy, no phone calls, Jim didn't know where he was, couldn't get a hold of him, and would tell me "I don't know what to tell you." Guy shows up, I mention it, he's been picking up materials elsewhere, or something like that, which is fine, but again, no communication. Same level of confusion with what *day* he'd be coming. In a nutshell, don't plan your life around the work being done. All in all, it took about 1.5 times as long as estimated, at about 1.5 times the price estimated. Jim's a nice guy, and his guys do good work, but it's bit disorganized, so be prepared for that.
Description of Work: Re-framed and replaced the decking and roof over our laundry room, remove the stucco from the exterior wall above that, and replaced with hardiboard, insulated and installed beadboard on the ceiling of the laundry room.

On the plus side: when Jim DOES do the work, it is thorough and well-done. He comes up with creative solutions and has a very pleasant demeanor. And in our experience, the "Handyman for a Day" deal can be a great one if you have a long list of relatively simple projects, and are home to oversee the work. On the minus side: It can be impossible to get Jim to reply. And, in my entire life, I have just never had a customer service professional say to me "I don't want to deal with it" about such a simple repair as replacing storm windows. As someone now 3,000 miles away from our house, it has ended up being a huge hassle to find now two responsive vendors to do the work that Jim could not do.
Description of Work: We originally hired Jim through the Angie's List coupon to complete 6 hours worth of handyman repairs. After about a month of silence, we finally heard from him and he and a colleague completed at least $1,000 worth of work in that day alone. It was an exceptional experience, and a great bargain. We hired Jim to return and fix a rotted out window frame and perform some additional work. The young man who performed the work did a shoddy job, basically gluing together two thin pieces of board to reconstitute the frame, and then painting over it...without even hiding the seam. It looks horrible. We have rented our house for the year and Jim graciously agreed to finish the remaining projects we had on our list. The final work we asked Jim to complete was to pick up an install 4 storm windows and attend to a leaking roof. For this, we paid him a $100 deposit. The leak persisted, and he was never able to fix it or give a clear indication of what was wrong. And two of the four storm windows we ordered-- according to Jim's measurements-- didn't fit. After about two months, I managed to reach Jim and inquire about the state of re-ordering storm windows that fit and he said, simply, "I don't want to deal with this anymore" (I had a pen in hand and wrote this verbatim, I was so astonished by his reply). He proceeded to tell me that "his guy who measures windows" refused to come out to our house. "I'm not sure why," he said. So now, three months later, we still have a leaky roof (with another Angie's List member not returning 36 separate calls) and no storm windows. And now winter has arrived.

These nice people did indeed get over 1000 work for 299. The window sill my man replaced(with my direct supervision had to be made of 2 pieces glued together due to the age of the home used much thicker wood than we use now) Looked fine to me. They sent me a deposit of $100 to pick up and install the 4 windows(of which he took to the shop avross town. There was no measurement they used the old ones as a pattern. Its a 40 minute drive to his home and another1.5 hours to get the windows from the disorganized repair shop and back to his home, I got on the roof and found a couple places that could be leaks and sealed them with 25$ of elastomeric sealent. The next rain I followed up withthe tenent and she said it still leaked but not as bad. I drove again to the home and spent another hour trying to find a spot and another 3 tubes of caulk. When the next rain had passed I called agian and the tenent again said still leaks. I brought an independent roofer to check it and again we tried some new spots for cauling. My normal window glass guy said he called several times and didnt get a return call. Thats when I said please call another glass company or the one that made them wrong because " I dont want to deal with it anymore". All of this time and expense for $100. This process consumed about $60 of caulk, at least $80 in gas, $125 for the independent roofer and about 12 hrs of my time. at the discounted coupon rate that is $480 of my labor for a total of $745 so I only lost $645 to get a poor rating. ps I didn't bill them for another dime. Im sorry they had such a bad experiance working with me.

About three months ago, I called this provider to come out and since then I have been dealing with him with an assortment of characters associated with his company. I had a leak into my garage and he told me it was from my master bathroom when he had my entire bathroom pulled out it was not from that bathroom. That's how the work started. I should have known from that point that his expertise was lacking. The kitchen is not the kitchen that I wanted from IKEA he bought the cheapest stuff. He told me that he was going to put ceramic tile down then he told me that the floor could not support that and he put down vinyl. I found this back splash online to order through Home Depot. He told me it would take 2 weeks to get the tile in. He told me I have this Travertine I could use. I told him I could not afford that. He did put it in, but it looks terrible. There are spots not grouted and they are uneven as well and it just does not look finished. I told him that the A/C was not getting upstairs and he put a system into work where he cut a hole in the ceiling in the dining room and put in into the floor in the bedroom upstairs and it works only to and extent. The hole is still exposed and the blanket thing that he put in there is still in there. There is not any A/C in the other rooms stairs; the other 2 bedrooms. He ripped up all the carpet upstairs to show me the hardwood floors and now they are all scratched and look horrible. My daughter has been living with her aide for the last three months practically and not able to live in the house due to her autism and all the dust in the house from the construction. I fired him on Friday, he was saying I only owe him 5000 more dollars. The work is not done. I still need 8 doors, painting completed, the walls in the entry still need replaced and all the other holes he put in the house that were not expected.

When I interviewed this nice lady I found her home not fit for habitation. She shared with me that the 2 bathrooms haven't drained in years and the tub water goes into the garage, they have been using the powder room only, the kitchen was not able to be cooked in (no door on the oven etc.) I asked what her budget was and she said 30K including all appliances and materials. I thought about it and said to myself gut 2 bathrooms and a kitchen, remove a wall, remove all carpets, paint 8 rooms install 4 doors (as our agreement stated) all appliances and materials plus remove a dumpster of rubbish from the house before we could start for 30K,,,NO WAY. I spoke to another contractor friend and he said it should be $45k. I talked to her and said to myself no one this nice should live like this (she also has 2 foster children living there) so I said if I cut some corners I will make it happen! But I didn't cut corners. She approved all materials with a gracious smile and a thank you. When it came time for appliances I bought stainless steel matching Whirlpool fridge with ice maker and water through the door and the Ikea doors I thought she wanted. I also bought the automatic door and drawer closers. 2 weeks later she said the doors where not the ones she wanted,I was blown away by her silence about it until after they where installed. Out of the 30k at my expense I purchased travertine back splash with a special inset medallion and the butcher block countertops. One night I told her I would be there Monday am to remove all the remaining trash (one dumpster and 2 truck loads already ) she told me to get out. I had spent 2 weeks 7 days a week working there myself trying to get back on schedule (my lead man was ill on and off for 2 months and we got farther and farther behind). I begged her to let me fix any issues and complete the work; she said get out. To correct the account of money she gave me a total of 25000 this included the 6000 in kitchen and over 4000 in other bath fittings. Bottom line she paid me less than 14k in labor for 2 complete gut out to studs and redo baths, complete kitchen gut to the studs, and disposal fees of over 1000. I had painted kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom as soon as we could and removed as much of the carpet as she would allow.

I called them to schedule an appointment. The gentleman who answered the phone said he was in the middle of a job at the moment, and he asked me to send him an email. I sent an email, which they did respond too. Essentially, it said that they’d be in touch; however, I have yet to be scheduled.
Description of Work: I purchased coupon for pressure washing.

I assumed whole house pressure washing would include the roof. It did not. When Mr. Brouse arrived he said anything on the second floor would be "extra," even though my house is a very small Cape Cod and his ad clearly says it is extra only if scaffolding or ladders are needed (neither of which were used). After some haggling, he agreed to do the upstairs siding. Had I known the service was only meant to clean siding I would not have done it. I have a brick house with very little siding on it, so I do not think it was worth it to me and the price was too high for what he did. He wouldn't clean the brick because it would damage it. Mr. Brouse did none of the work himself. He had a young man do all the work who worked hard and did an excellent job. Brouse left while this went on. When he returned, he decided the front window needed ammonia to be cleaned and he didn't have any. He asked me for some, which I didn't have. He had to go and buy some. He also wanted extra money to clean out the gutters. We agreed on $50, but in pressure washing the patio, his worker loosened and removed some concrete facing on one of my window wells. Instead of paying him the $50 at the time, Mr. Brouse said, "pay me when we come back to fix the concrete. " I knew I'd never see him again and I haven't.
Description of Work: The "Big Deal" offered whole house pressure washing. It turned out that meant he would wash what little siding I had on a brick house, the pavement and a back door concrete porch. He only wanted to do the first floor (where I have practically NO siding). After some discussion, he agreed to do the upstairs siding. It's only a 1500 sq. ft house!

Response from Jim Brouse Home Improvement
The extra cost this lady refers to in the coupon designed by Angie's List to specifically say materials not included I tell each person the cost is between 80 and 160 as it did with her with our first phone conversation.

Jim gave us an estimate at the first visit and stuck to it. His crew did all the jobs promptly and professionally. I would be glad to recommend him for medium size jobs like this one as well as larger projects - we had previously used him to replace a balcony roof and were very happy with his work then.
Description of Work: We hired Jim to handle a number of items needed in response to an inspection on our house which is being sold. He replaced a lock in an unusually thick front door, replaced window panes and did electrical work including installing an outside GFCOI outlet. I also had an outside vent that needed to be closed up and insulated and connected to a range hood.

JIm and his crew did an amazing job on our home. Not only did they give fair estimates, but they showed up to work early and performed their work eagerly. We look forward to doing work with them again in the future. Their professionalism was amazing.
