He never got back to me. After calls and e-mails, he finally got back to me saying "Thank God I lost your name and contact information." He said he would call me back in a few days. I sent him an email asking if he wanted the job, and he replied back asking "Who are you?" He had blown off the job somewhere along the line and I didn't appreciate that.
Description of Work: He came out for an estimate. He said he would call back in a few days.

I bought two Handyman-For-a-Day Big Deal coupons several months ago. I spoke with Jim and told him about the Big Deal coupons and that I had several handyman type jobs for him. He told me it was too far to go to Cherry Hill, NJ for some handyman jobs but then I mentioned I also needed parging done on my house's foundation. Jim agreed to come out and give me an estimate. After a couple of months of waiting, phone calls, and emailing, Jim finally came out and gave me an estimate of $1,900 to have between one and two feet of foundation parged on all fours sides of the house. I received another estimate from another Angie's List company that was much, much lower (less than half). I decided to go with the lower estimate but informed Jim that I still had bought the coupons and needed other work done. One week later and he has still not responded to my last email. I am ready to get a refund for my coupons and start looking for a new handyman.

They hauled all debris away and were very polite and professional throughout the process. I used an online coupon and it seemed like it took a long time to get on their schedule (approx 2 months) but once I made it clear that I was disappointed I had waited so long they scheduled me quickly.
Description of Work: They took down my popcorn ceiling and one plaster wall in a back bedroom addition over the kitchen. I had recently had hardwood floors installed so they had to cover them to protect them and they did a good job at that.

Jim was very responsive. He answered the phone immediately and offered to come out that same afternoon to look at the work. He and his assistant arrived the next morning. THe work took 2 days. After starting the work Jim made some suggestions to improve the repairs. We took his advice and are completely satisfied with all the work. He and his assistant Rich were very professional. They cleaned up after themselves.THe second day, Rich was late arriving (major storm knocked out power), but JIm was very responsive in tracking him down and Rich stayed late both days to make sure everything was completed to our satisfaction. EVen though some of the jobs were more difficult than initially assessed, JIm honored the original quotes.
Description of Work: JIm did a number of jobs around our house...patched ceiling drywall where roof leaked, new laundry tub faucet, fixed broken light switch, repair/replaced water-damaged soffits.

Overall I was happy. However, there are still some outstanding issues that have never been completed. He did some electrical work and it looks good and it seems okay but he hasn’t been back to finish the project yet. They also haven’t finished work on the kitchen ceiling and it was a long time ago. Responsiveness initially was an A, it went down to a B, and it’s at a D right now. Some of the workers were very professional and some weren’t professional. Next time I will probably look elsewhere because of my frustration level. The contractor has expressed that he has had some issues lately and that’s why he hasn’t been back.
Description of Work: I used Jim Brouse Home Improvement. He put in new tile and a vanity in the bathroom, he ripped out paneling in the basement, and he did a number of other projects. They were here for two weeks, every day, doing something.

I called Sunday evening around 730 intending on leaving a message. He answered the phone. I was very surprised. He asked how he could help me. We talked about what I need and what services he offers. I told him that I saw in his advertisment in the AL booklet that he does duct cleaning. I told him my concerns about getting that done. I asked his view on the cleaning and how he does it. He asked if he could call back back in the morning. He said we would discuss it then. He said he would call back at 8 am. I still have not recv a call from him.
Description of Work: I called to talk to him about service.
Well overall everything went fine, I left an email on his website the week before, and Monday May 28,2012 he got back to me and made an appointment for Tuesday, which he actually started the work. I thought it was just going to be an estimate, but he was ready to get the job started. He took down the old light in my bathroom, the only problem was I did not have the new ones yet, so he went to Lowes to get them for me and put them up. I think that when you call him you should have all your supplies needed for the job. He was very pleasant, and his assistant was very nice and on time both days. I took off work, which was fine, I think you should talk about all the details and ask a lot of questions no matter how small the job is. The price he stated in the beginning, he stuck to in the end. I would recommend him as a handyman and will have him back again. I only had minor jobs done, but I liked his attitude, the thing I appreciated the most was, he called and said, he was stuck in traffic.
Description of Work: I needed a repair to my two bedroom ceilings which each had a ceiling fan with a circular hole around each fan from a previous installation by another person who did not fix the hole around the fans. Jim's assistant installed a new ceiling fan to one bedroom and covered both the areas with the hole with ceiling medalion, which looked very nice and covered the holes. The new ceiling fan was installed and did not shake like the old one. Jim applied two new light fixtures in my bathroom, and a new electrical outlet to the wall under the lights. Jim's assistant installed a new faucet to my sink in the bath. They had to plaster the wall around the new light fixtures and the new medicine cabnet I had put up. I told him I would sand the surrounding wall and finish with the paint I already had used in the bathroom before. That was fine. I could not take another day off work, plaster has to dry and that was a small job I felt fine completing.

Overall I this was a mixed-bag of an experience, and I probably won't call Mr. Brouse again. He and his colleague Tommy were absolutely pleasant and professional, clearly more than competent, and they accomplished most of what we wanted, but several things bothered me about the service. First, we purchased a "Big Deal" coupon for "a day" (8 hours, I assumed, but it was unclear) of work for $249 on March 9th, but he wasn't even able to come in until May 22nd. He was pretty unresponsive to our calls and, eventually, our e-mails. No, it wasn't wildly urgent, but a little more responsiveness would have been nice. Advice I'd give to anyone buying an hourly service is to ask for a little more info before signing on. I think I misunderstood what I was buying, which has nothing to do with Mr. Brouse. Second, when he and his colleague arrived, it felt like Jim was there largely to manage Tommy and that our 8 hours was actually two simultaneous blocks of four hours, some of which was Tommy working and Jim directing him. There were parts of the job that required two people simultaneously (in particular a sticky dryer-vent job), but it felt sneakingly like I was getting more like 6 hours total actual work for the price (which was still a very reasonable price, yes). It ended up that they stayed a total of almost 12 hours (6 hours each), and I was billed only an additional $110 for the overage of hours which again, seems like a very reasonable price. They were gratifyingly flexible, however, I still think it would be to the customer's benefit to more fully understand what "a day"means as well as what the charges might be in case of overages. Third, when I just went to put some items on the shelves that were installed today, I discovered that while the four shelves are bolted to the wall, they neglected to screw the actual shelves to the support brackets! Instead, the shelves are simply resting on the supports, so I now have to do this part of the job myself. I had made it pretty clear that the shelves were a major priority, and yet the work was arranged in a way that meant they had to stay longer to complete the list, which meant I had to pay more, which was fine, if unanticipated. I didn't get the impression at all that this was intentional--the dryer-vent hose job took far longer than they'd anticipated--but it was frustrating that they didn't tell me in advance a) how long they'd need to stay and b) the price or at least an estimate of payment prior to overstaying the allotted time. Finally, one small thing that rubbed me the wrong way: while my husband was the primary contact via phone and e-mail, all their in-person dealings were with me once they arrived at the house (my husband was at work; I took a day off). Yet, as soon as my husband came home they wanted to speak to him, and led him downstairs to look at something they had noticed and that they were trying to get us to pay them to fix. They directed their commentary to him, and Mr. Brouse even said out loud, as he replaced the level they'd been using (without asking, I might add), "I'll just return your husband's level to the basement" after complimenting the quality of the level extensively. It seems inconsequential, but his assumption of a lack of knowledge on my part--and that the level could not possibly have been mine, since I'm a woman!--and how he kind of cut me out of the conversation, was pretty infuriating (especially since it was in fact my level).Again, these guys clearly know what they're doing, and they wrestled with a tough job at my house and probably didn't get paid as much as they normally would for all that hassle. However, the relative difficulty of getting them to fulfill their obligation, plus the other details, left me feeling like it wasn't totally worth it. I definitely would not warn others off using this service provider, but wanted to share my own experiences.
Description of Work: put up external house numbers (screwed into brick); installed 4 wall mounted shelves (mollies and screwed to plaster and through brick); put water-heater blanket on; replaced dryer-vent hose; sanded down a sticky front door; grounded a gas line that had been left ungrounded by plumbers (to bring us up to code); reattached a shelf in basement laundry. Also gave us an opinion/quote on installation of a pocket door in our bathroom as well as on the installation of an external light fixture and on grounding the electrical in the kitchen.

The handyman showed up on time, his Supervisor and a helper came with him. After discussing the things we needed fixed, only one man was necessary. He fixed everything on our list and was quick and neat. He was a very nice guy.
Description of Work: We purchased a deal for a handyman to work at our home fixing things a list of miscellaneous items both inside and outside our home. I believe it was $250 for 6 hours of work. At first we weren't thrilled because they weren't able to actually do the work for several weeks but when they did get here the guy did a great job. He wasn't in my home 5 minutes and he had fixed the first thing on my list! He worked quickly and did a good job on each of the problems we asked him to repair. He fixed my vertical blinds, a door threshold that wasn't properly installed, sliding doors to my bedroom closet, he calked my kitchen sink and both the tub and shower in my bathroom, he repaired a gate on our deck that wouldn't open/close and repaired a hole in our aluminum shed. We would definitely hire him again!
