Excellently. Estimate was reasonable, work was professional. Only minor complaint is that it took several phone calls back and forth to coordinate, schedule and re-schedule appointments.

It went well. Jim is the contractor and he had another man doing most of the work. They stopped at my house to see first what was needed and had to get a hand-truck. They returned shortly. Jim helped carry the refrigerator down the steps and then supervised this man until he felt the job was under control. Both were gentlemen and I was very pleased. The doors had to be taken off of the refrigerator and them put back on. The man doing the work was very careful to get the doors back on straight. I was very please and I would recommend them both. I'm sorry that I don't recall the other gentleman's name.

This company did exactly what they told me they would do. They showed up on time every day and finished in 2 days. The front entry looks 1000% better. I am happy with everything. Everyone really took the time to make sure I was happy with every detail.
Description of Work: They installed a new front door in my home. I had a regular sized one before so they cut out the area and installed a double. I also had them revamp my front entry way with new sheetrock, 12 x 12 tiles for the floor, and they installed three new light fixtures for me as well. One was a chandelier and the other two are wall lights. The area that all this work was done in is about 200 square feet.

As you can tell he has done a huge list of things for us. He is not very cheap, but, these days who really is. He roughly charges about $75/hour and that does not include materials. I am not to sure what he actually charged us because as time went on I added more things and we paid him along the way. I paid him an upfront deposit and then paid a little in the middle and another when the jobs were complete. I am not sure what other people charge, but he seemed pretty reasonable. He comes on time and if he cannot come, he will call and notify you. Some of the work he was familiar with and finished quickly. Other things took a little longer because he learned along the way. I have been very happy with him. I already have a new list of things to ask him to complete.
Description of Work: I had a whole bunch of things for Jim Brouse to do for me. He repaired a leak in the bedroom, he closed off a lot of open areas in the bedroom, he installed a ladder in the attic, put in a new heating and air conditioning unit in my studio, installed thermostats, put in a floor, he did some wiring, put a light in, installed curtain rods and also put in wooden panels. He came out very quickly to assess what needed to be done and got done pretty quickly. He did subcontract out some work, but always comes to supervise his men. They are all also very good, professional, and excellent.

Jim himself was very professional but the crew he used was less than professional. I guess that is why I choose not to give a grade on the professionalism. After the crew was finished Jim had completed or redone some of the work to his standards.
Description of Work: They painted, dry walled, caulked and did other odds and ends projects within our 2000 square foot home. They also did some minor prep work, which included taping some areas and cleaning. The work took 1 week to complete.

Jim came out and gave me an estimate. I had gotten another estimate and his was quite a bit lower but I did have confidence in his ability to do the job. The job was done last week and I'm very happy with it. The fellow who actually did the pressure washing was very polite and did good work. Jim is concerned about getting the job done on time and doing a good job. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: The siding was pressure washed and looks great. All the mold and dirt are gone. They also washed the stone and slate which look much, much better than before. The stucco which I'm planning to paint was washed and is much cleaner and will be a better surface to paint on.

Sent Jim an email on 5/12. Gave him my address, phone number, directions to my home, and a description of the two jobs I needed to be done. He responded very briefly to my email, but never followed up with an appointment to give me an estimate. Two weeks is more than enough time in my estimation for someone to follow-up. I went elsewhere and got one of the jobs completed successfully by another firm I located on Angie's list. Second job is pending completion.
Description of Work: Attempted to get estimate for two jobs from Jim, but he never telephoned me to set up an appointment. I gave him 2 weeks to respond. He must be too busy to accept new work.

WAIT A MINUTE! "I THINK I PAID TOO MUCH FOR WORK THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN SO LONG." I CHARGED BY THE JOB NOT BY TIME. THE ODD THING ABOUT THIS IS I GAVE HER A PRICE THINKING I WAS BEING GENEROUS. THEN FOUND PARTS MISSING AND NO INSTRUCTIONS FOR A MAJOR ASSEMBLY. I ALSO REMOVED (AT NO CHARGE) MOUNDS OF RUBBISH FROM HER BASEMENT. MONTHS LATER SHE CALLED FOR A HANDRAIL I SUGGESTED (SHE HAS MOBILITY ISSUES)AND GAVE A FAIR PRICE FOR IT (NO CHARGE FOR LITERALLY 3 HRS OF PHONE AND SHOPPING TIME) THEN SPENT ANOTHER 3 HOURS OF PHONE AND TRAVEL TIME TO DELIVER PAINT COLORS, MORE TIME TO DISCUSS EVERY COLOR OPTION. SHE CALLED ME A MONTH LATER TO DEMAND A RECEIPT THAT I HAD EMAILED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE. I SENT ANOTHER ONE, THEN RECEIVED ANOTHER CALL FOR A RECEIPT, WHICH I HAND DELIVERED, ALL WITH A SMILE. I GUESS A C DOES NOT MAKE ME FEEL APPRECIATED, I EXPECT MORE OF MYSELF.

Mr. Brouse was available the same day I called, came to the house exactly when he said he would, and gave us a price before starting the work. It was a bit more than we expected, but he explained why our fireplace was a more difficult installation, and he ended up doing some very creative things to get the doors properly installed. All in all, I'd definitely use him again for small handyman work.

Jim answered my call immediately, came over that same day, gave me an estimate within about a day, and started the work promptly. He continued with the job until it was completed.
Description of Work: We have a two-car garage with separate doors. The wood supporting posts in the middle were set in a depression in the cement apron, and suffered some rot at the bottom which caused a significant sag in the roof. Jim removed the old wood, replaced the cement apron, jacked up the roof to remove the sag, and replaced the wood.

As far as the aluminum work everything went well. Bill worked for almost four days on the project even though the weather was very cold. It took longer than anticipated and Bill came back Saturday and Sunday to get the job finished. As far as the leak is concerned time will tell and that's the way it is with leaks. There are no guarantees. I think Jim diagnosed the source of the leak accurately so we will have to see what happens over the next few months. Bill volunteered to fix a few places around some windows where material had pulled away and even trimmed two branches for me just because he noticed they were in a bad place. He is a hard worker and very pleasant.
Description of Work: I called with a list of jobs that needed to be done. Jim responded quickly and came over to look over my list and give me an idea of what things would cost along with some suggestions as to saving money. The most critical job on the list was a leak in the dining room ceiling. Second in importance was one large woodpecker hole and a smaller second one in the posts of the small porch in front of the front door. Jim diagnosed the source of the leak. After some discussion we decided to have aluminum put on the posts and wood parts of the front porch as well as over the wood parts of our large solarium. All the wood was showing signs of deteriorating. Jim arranged for Bill Ingram of Wm. Ingram Roofing and Siding to do the work. Subcontracting always adds to the cost of a project.

I think the most notable thing about this project was the railing repair. Jim developed a great idea, which while time consuming, cost a lot less than manufacturing new railings for the entire deck. The railings are now not only safe but attractive. Another notable thing about the project was that it was completed on time. I also appreciated that Jim always returned my calls and always either showed-up when he said he would or called in advance to tell you he could not make it. Though the cost of the project was high, the deck is huge and it was in terrible shape. I think four guys worked four or five days just to stain it. We are pleased with the results of the project.
Description of Work: We recently purchased a home with a large deck (1,300 square foot) in need of repair. It appeared that it had not been stained or treated since it was built in the early 90's, many of the floor boards had rotted, those that had not rotted were rough and worn, and the railings, both head rails and spindles, were unsafe and unattractive. Jim came out, soon after we contacted him, and looked around the deck. He initially suggested that he could replace the rotten decking boards, replace the head rails on the railings, and wash and treat the deck for $8,000. He noted that if I wanted to spend less, he could make the deck safe for about $3,000. We decided we would go for the more thorough repair. After he and his team had worked for a couple days, he developed a plan for repairing the railings without replacing all of the wood. Given the time involved in the process, he estimated it would cost another $4,500. He installed decorative railing caps (40), which added another $600.

See above. Mr. Brouse is polite, but I was disappointed that he didn't tell me straight away that he didn't want to do this work.
Description of Work: Requested assorted minor repair tasks for handyman. Mr. Brouse expressed interest in the beginning, came to my house and reviewed my needs. However, after several repeat attempts to obtain a quotation, he declined to bid. No work was performed, but several months effort on my part were spent to get to this point. I had wanted some items completed before winter came.

After doing the above, Mr. Brouse informed me that he was not capable of doing the mounting and the crown molding, as he had promised. I then had to scrounge around for a third carpenter, which are not easy to get. Mr. Brouse is very charming and articulate, but does not have the skills he originally professed to have.
Description of Work: Mr. Brouse was very supportive over the telephone, when my contractor walked out on me. He has the gift to gab. He also helped me during a stressful time, but then did the same thing, as the original carpenter and left the job frequently. He looked at the kitchen remodeling job and said that he could do the work, including the mounting and molding above the cabinets. He did electrical work, aligned the cabinet doors, and did a skeletal structure in place of a cabinet.

As usual with contractors, it took some persistence to get ahold of him and to get him out for an estimate. We emailed him some pictures initially and he said he would get back to us, but didn't. Eventually he came out to look at the job in person and he took a piece of the wood from the deck to see if he could find a lumber yard that carried it. We had to follow up with him again for the estimate, as he didn't get back to us. It seemed like the job wasn't up his alley, so we looked elsewhere. The price boiled down to what he charges by the hour, which was the same as another guy we spoke to, but the other guy brings a crew and Jim is solo.
