Joe was unusual. He did not e-mail an estimate. He came in person, looked over all the areas involved. He discouraged us from doing one of the paint jobs (painting wood bannisters and railing a bright white) but when we insisted, he agreed. I had some reservations about the completed work on the railings and bannisters, but Joe had given me plenty of warning about the difficulty of the task. Overall, I really love the resulting look, but would recommend to other others that they take Joe's advice if offered. Joe provided a handwritten estimate and took the Angie's list discount. His initial, casual, estimate was consistent with the final estimate and costs (it turns out handwritten was efficient, he had already started work when we finally received another company's electronic estimate). Overall his estimate was on par with others we obtained. After the exterior was power washed, painted and the deck stained, it looked like a new home. His crew did a great job. Our interior walls were a particular challenge. In some rooms, when we tried to paint in the past, the upper walls and ceiling had to be painted the exact same color or the walls appeared to be slanting at unattractive angles where walls and ceilings met. This company did a lot of wall repair. They used 4 different colors, 3 different colors in one room alone... and the walls and ceilings appear in perfect alignment where the different colors meet. In one room, the darkest possible green color which was applied several times by amateur painters now appears a very light, soft blue as requested. On room with walls which appear to have been damaged by misapplication and removal of wall paper (before our time) now has smooth walls with expert paint application. Some of the very rare negative reviews have talked about messiness. It is true that while the crew works, the drop cloths are left in place and that the big clean up occurs after the work is completed. Quite frankly, I cannot see how this could be done differently as each task usually requires some prep work drying time. The work occurred over days, not hours and the amount of "mess" seemed appropriate to the work at hand. We did not notice anything out of the ordinary during the job. After the big clean up I did notice small spatter marks on some of the floors and a couple of tiny drip marks on a appliance, but all were easily cleaned with no harm done.
Description of Work: The work was done many months ago; I do not recall the exact time. I do not have the costs in front of me. Power wash house sidingPower wash and stain deckPaint exterior trim and doors, including 2nd story decorative trim and garage exteriorsPaint master bath, powder room, bedroom/office, 2nd story hallway and doors and ceilings, entry way and hallways and ceilings on first floor, family room and kitchen.Paint wood bannisters and railing.Paint colors used: 3 custom colors and white for trims.

I contacted Joe through Angie's list. He returned my call within 24 hours and came out to give me an estimate in the same week. Joe's service included powerwashing all of the exterior to remove the old flaking paint and scrapping paint off of my old wood shutters and door frame; painting included two coats of premium exterior masonary paint on the brick walls and chimney, two coats of premium vinyl paint on the siding and window trim, and two coat of premium wood paint on the shutters and door frame. The garage never even made it into the estimate, because I forgot to mention that I wanted it painted too. Joe painted it, and didn't charge me for it! I received other estimates and those estimates were higher -- and none of them included powerwashing! Joe and his staff were very personable and prompt in communication. They completely cleaned up when they were finished. My house looks beautiful. My neighbor stopped me to tell me that she sat in her car in front of my house admiring how beautiful it looked! I will absolutely call Joe Egan Painting for any future painting needs.
Description of Work: Joe and his staff painted the entire exterior of my home.

Overall it went well. I had a number of minor issues with the work which lead me to initially give a lower rating and review. I believe they were assoicated with an individual who was eventually terminated. When addressed with Mr. Egan, the issues were resolved.

I called Joe for an estimate on painting our house. He responded promptly with a return call and came by the house the next day and submitted the estimate at that time. After he advised that the house would need to be power washed, we decided to power wash the deck as well for a very small and reasonable increase. Joe was very knowledgeable about the color and type of paint that would work best on our home and we relied on him to point us in the right direction for the final choice of color. My husband and I did not know if the shutters, which are original to the house, could be painted or if they would need replacement. Joe assured us that they could be repaired and painted. He was absolutely correct, they look fabulous -- as good as new and much more cost effective than replacements. The deck came out great as well. We have many large trees which could have been a problem in getting to the A-frames, but Joe's crew did an excellent job of working around the trees. They also tackled the steep roof and were able to paint the trim on the chimney to match the rest of the house. Joe was very pleasant and reasonable to work with from beginning to end. His crew was professional, neat and reliable. They started promptly every morning and finished the work in record time. Everytime I asked a question, I received a polite and positive response. Our neighbors made of point of letting us know how professional and hardworking they were. All in all, it was a very positive experience and the final result is a very professional paint job -- the house looks clean and new. I will absolutely call on Joe Egan Painting again in the future.
Description of Work: Our brick and stone home was built in 1950. All of the wood on the exterior of the home needed painting including two large walk-out bays, A-frames, shutters, garage door, portico, and chimney sash/trim.

Joe Egan painting has many great reviews on Angie's List, and that's why I hired him without meeting a competitor for a second estimate. Now I'm extremely pleased to be the latest to review the great work Joe's crew does. My wife and I met with Joe the first week of June after closing on a house. Three of the rooms in the house were in desperate need of updating, with old-fashioned gaudy wallpaper and garish colors of paint. Joe gave us a quick estimate for the de-wallpapering and repainting, then worked us to fit our budget. Joe is extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and up-front with answering our questions. A few days later, he had crew members in our house hard at work stripping wallpaper (not the most pleasant task). The following week they were priming and painting, and then wrapping up. He knew we had a tight schedule to get the painting work done (with all of our other contractors to schedule...) and he made sure we were well ahead of schedule. Not a single complaint from us about Joe Egan. We will hire him again without hesitation when we update the other rooms in our house, and you should as well.
Description of Work: Removal of wallpaper from two rooms, painting of walls/ceilings/trim in three rooms.

The job went very well. Joe Egan arrived for an estimate on time on a Tuesday. By Thursday of that same week Tony was painting and he finished on Friday noon. The job took 1 1/2 days. Both days Tony arrived by around 7 or 7:30 am, the time he said he'd be there.Although the schedule was backed up by a couple weeks with some much bigger projects, Joe was able to schedule me since I made a quick commitment and the weather was good. Tony did a great job. The painted shed looks beautiful. He took a lot of care and worked hard. He left the work area clean. Tony was friendly, professional and reliable throughout, as was Joe.
Description of Work: Our new 12x12x12 ft. wooden shed was primed and painted with two coats, nail holes puttied. Both the body of the shed and the trim, which had a lot of cut outs on the door, were painted.

When Joe came to our house to do the estimate,he described in detail what work would be performed and how long it should take. His staff was professional and punctual. They never left a mess and we are pleased with the quality of work. I have a co-worker who wants to have her house painted and I recommended she call Joe.
Description of Work: The painters power washed, caulked, patched and painted the entire exterior of the house and painted the front porch and windows. Our house is a large three story home with a stucco surface so there was a lot of work involved.

Joe's staff (Steve, Mike, and Tony) came in moved and covered the furniture as well as the carpeting. They explained what they were doing that day and when they were leaving what they planned to do the next day. First day the walls were stripped of paper and washed down. Prepared and spackled the walls and ceiling. The following days painted surfaces with 2 coats of paint. The workers cleaned up area and moved the furniture back. They did an excellent job and were professional and courteous in their work. I feel for the price I received value and quality.
Description of Work: Painted living room and dining room. Included: removal of wall paper from dining room, repair ceiling cracks in the living room, spackle nail holes, caulk around windows. Painted ceiling, walls, woodwork, and 4 louvered doors all with 2 coats of paint. I had 4 estimates and for the amount of work to be done their price was competitive.

Excellent work. Joe and Tony were very accommodating from our first contact. Even though this job was for one bedroom, it was labor intensive with the sanding and priming involved to paint the built-ins. Since my wife was 7 months pregnant at the time we had a 5 day window when this needed to get done and Joe bent over backwards for us to finish during that time. We had other painters in this house and you can see the difference in skill level from Joe Egan's work as opposed to the other company.
Description of Work: Sanded and primed a built-in bookshelf that was stained a dark wood color and needed to be white. Also primed and painted trim and walls in the same bedroom

I had had the exterior of our large stone house in Chestnut Hill painted by another painting contractor 3 years ago, but the sills had started to crack and peel. After reviewing painter reports on Angie's List, I called Joe Egan, who had straight A's. As most of the previous paint job was OK, he was willing to tackle just the window sills - of which there were about 65 in number! In the process, he discovered a large area of rotted wood that he arranged to have replaced with a special water resistant material. He and his crew did a remarkable job of restoring everything that needed work. He was accomodating and pleasant to work with and he knows his job. I intend to use him again.

Joe came quickly for the estimate. We followed up about two months later and he came by to clarify what he would be doing. He showed up at the agreed upon time and did the work in about 2 days. It was a rainy fall. In a couple areas, and most particularly, the porch ceiling, there was some discoloration/bleed through. Joe came very quckly when we called him to show him on a weekend. He quickly agreed to come back and to repaint those areas which was completed by that Monday. It all looks great now. We would have him work for us again!

Great. Joe responded quickly to my email. We set up a date for an estimate. He gave me a great price with a great Angie's List discount. The work was done as promised over several days because of wet weather delays and allowing the surfaces to dry after washing. I'm very happy with the result. Joe and his crew really care about doing a good job. They put 2 coats of stain on the ramp even though the estimate was for one coat, and Joe showed up after the work had been done to make sure splatter stains left on the stucco by a previous contractor were thoroughly covered. Really good company.

The painters showed up on the date they specified and worked on the house each day (weather permitting). They finished within the two week time period. They even painted the bilco doors which were not part of the original project. I liked the way Joe wants to please his customers. He guarantees his work which is important.
Description of Work: Joe Egan did a nice job on painting the exterior of our house and delivered more than he promised. They thoroughly power washed the house, fully primed and painted two coats of Sherwin Williams Duration paint which is top of the line paint. They painted all of the shutters, and the stucco where ever it was needed. Joe and his painters really want to please the customer. He makes sure his painters do a professional job. His painters have been working for him for a while and are experienced and professional. They show up promptly and keep the worksite neat each day. I would use him again.

Staff seemed knowledgeable, professional, and hard-working. First raised doors into horizontal position to paint edges and top section which would normally be covered by the rubber edge seals or not fully exposed when door was lowered. Then painted human door and finally garage doors with first coat. Re-attached automatic door hardware so that doors could be secured overnight. On second day applied another coat. Doors look very nice.
Description of Work: Patched several cracks in 4 wooden garage doors (car); primed bolt heads (some rusty) that secure wooden door panels to hinges with oil-based primer. Painted all doors plus one regular (human) door with 2 finish coats of MAB Seashore exterior paint. Also painted the rubber strip at the bottom of each garage door to hide markings left by prior paint job.

Two workmen were assigned to our job and both men were very professional. The were careful not to destroy any surrounding landscaping or property. They completed their work over the course of a week. During that time, an earthquake (luckily no one was on a ladder at the time) and Hurricane Irene occurred. Despite the interruptions due to Mother Nature, the work was completed timely and efficiently. Care was taken to initially strip paint where needed and fill exposed gaps with primer. The paint was applied meticulously so that excessive paint or splatters did not occur. The work performed was excellent and done to our every satisfaction. In addition, a wooden outdoor bench and footstool was also stripped, primed and painted at no additional charge and window screens that were stored in our attic by a previous owner were replaced on side and back windows - all at no additional charge. I enjoyed working with Joe Egan. He was prompt with providing an estimate, checking in with us during the work week, and reviewing the completed job. I highly recommend Joe Egan Painting and look forward to working with him again in the future.
Description of Work: The exterior windows, trim, window frames, shutters, front entrance, doors and all exterior wood were primed as needed and two coats of semi-gloss paint was applied. Our home is 15 years old and has about 35 windows and much of the wood window frames were chipping and peeling.

The first time, we hired Joe to clean up the roof and exterior walls of our 3br brick house, which were getting green and covered with growth coming from the trees. The guys came out and powerwashed the roof and all walls, as well as sidewalks. The green was gone and the house looked much better. The bill was $550. A year later, we called Joe to do a larger job: paint all windows and entranceways in the house. This needed to be done because the paint had peeled off the wooden parts of the windowframes and the wood was beginning to rot. The caulking was also in bad shape. In the process of the work we also decided to replace 4 pairs of shutters and paint the A-frames. The painting was done over the course of 3 days. The bill was $2,800. The most recent job was part of a kitchen remodel. I had taken out the old cabinets and cut out a section of drywall where water had leaked from the upstairs bathroom in the past. We hired Joe's company to replace the drywall and paint the ceiling, but then also asked them to paint and caulk a section of a wall and interior window trim. All together this ran us $650, and the guys were over four days that week. Each time, we were very satisfied with the work. Joe is easy to get in touch with and usually comes out to give an estimate the same day or the next day. The pricing is fair and competitive, and Joe is upfront about what his own costs on the project are. Each time, Joe has been able to accomodate our schedule, particularly with the last job (the kitchen) where we were eager to get the work done as soon as possible. The guys who come to paint and powerwash are great, very nice people, very responsive, and take care to keep things tidy as they work. Each time they came out, they did a great job. We would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: We've hired Joe's company three times over the last year. The services included power washing the entire house (including the roof), painting the windows and doors in the house, hanging new shutters, replacing a piece of drywall in the ceiling in the kitchen and painting kitchen wall and ceiling.

Joe Egan provided competitve estimate relative to other 2 painting companies who provided estimates. He delivered; he did exactly what he said he would do within his original timeline. Painting team arrived early each day, worked hard through summer heat and cleaned up every evening. Joe and his team communicated well through the job and Joe followed up after the job to make sure we were satisfied. Excellent painting job inside and out. We would hire them again.

I called Joe because he was one of the top rated exterior painters on Angie's List. I got quotes from a few of the different top people and Joe was willing to beat their quotes. From my first phone call I got a really good feeling from Joe, he just seemed like an honest and nice guy. Joe came twice to give me an estimate and go over what he would be doing with the house. He was not pushy at all like some of the other painters I called. He told me his estimate and left the ball in my court which I really appreciated - some of the other painters on Angie's List called me numerous times hounding me for the job. When Joe was hired he promised to have the house painted by my deadline (I had a renter moving into the property) and he came through on his promise. He estimated that the work would take 5 days with two to three guys and came in right on budget and on time. The guys cleaned up after themselves and were respectful the entire time they were at the house. My only complaint was that they were a little rough on the plants around the house but to be fair I didn't mention that they needed to be careful around some of them. I think had I mentioned it this wouldn't have been a problem at all! Joe did more than he was hired to do because he knew I really wanted certain things done but couldn't afford it (painting a railing and gate and cleaning up some of the power washing I did on my deck). When my renter came back she was AMAZED at how different and amazing the house looked. My neighbors have all mentioned how great the house looks and asked who I had paint the house. Joe did a great job and I would definitely hire him again and recommend him to anyone who was looking for a painter.
Description of Work: Joe and his crew power washed the bottom half of my house which is stucco and painted the top half which is cedar shingles and painted my enclosed porch and all windows.

I met Joe on the morning of May 19. He gave me a rough estimate of what it would take to paint the entire interior of my condo. My wife and I had just purchased the condo, and we wanted to have it painted before we moved in. I received a formal proposal in just a few days. The price was very good, and in the range that I expected. However, because of his busy schedule, Joe couldn't get started until mid-June. But if you want the best, you have to be willing to wait for it. I sent him the key to the condo in the mail and he was able to get in at his earliest opportunity. Once he and his crack crew got started, it took them only about a week and a half to complete the job. They did an excellent job. Especially in getting the colors and textures just as my wife wanted them. She had spent several weeks picking out a particular color from a source that Joe didn't use, and despite some anxiety on my wife's part, the color was exactly as she wanted it. A superlative job all around. Thanks, Joe.
Description of Work: Removed wallpaper on several walls and border paper along the ceiling in three rooms. Removed and disposed of the old curtains and rods. Repaired all the walls where needed and prepped all walls and ceilings prior to painting. Painted all walls and ceilings in two coats of primer and paint. Also painted all interior all doors and trimwork.

Our experience with Joe and his team was wonderful from start to finish. Joe had given us an estimate immediately, but we needed to wait due to a financial issue. He was totally understanding and kept the price the same even though he had to wait several months to do the work. The quality of the materials and the workmanship was excellent. They use very high quality paint. Everyone was very polite and professional. They were careful and paid close attention to details. If I made a request, they immediately did whatever I asked. They cleaned everything up and the house looks beautiful! This was our best painting experience ever! Joe really takes pride in his work and reputation. We highly recommend Joe Egan Painting!

I called Joe Egan for an estimate for interior painting for six and a half room and two floors of hallways. Joe returned my calls promptly and came out and reviewed the work to be done. He sat down with my husband and I and priced out the entire job. After reading all the wonderful reviews on Angie's List and feeling very comfortable with the price, we agreed to the job. Joe's crew were able to start about three weeks after we originally spoke. There was no rush and I told him he could start when his schedule would allow. There was a good bit to be done and I wanted it done in one shot, not piecemeal. Other than the first day they arrived, I was not home for the work being done. The first day was ceilings and priming which went smoothly. After that, everything went quickly down hill. I came home one day from work and my children's rooms were completely uninhabitable. Not only had they dumped clothes in the bottom of one child's closet, but the second one had everything, including some furniture, piled on her bed in the middle of the room. They had left a wet tray of paint in the room with the roller still in it. She had paint on her dresser and two of her favorite hats. When I spoke to Joe and told him what a mess everything was, he had his crew drop everything and clean up. I appreciated that. Unfortunately the quality of the rooms painted is the worst I have ever experienced with painters over the years - and I include myself as a painter in that category. They painted over switchplates, tape on the ceiling from my son's posters, the painting hooks, and orange adhesive used to hang posters. You could see through the paint in some spots to the primer below (and still can). They dirtied the ceiling while painting the walls and tried to paint over it. I had them come back three times to fix my son's room and it's still very poor quality. They draped plastic over my dining room chandelier and the plastic melted on the bulbs. They're all brown now and need to be replaced. I have found paint on pieces of furniture in every room painted and on my oriental rug in my bedroom. I'm still finding paint in places it shouldn't be. My bedroom needed one wall done. I just recently discovered that there's now brown paint on my radiator. It looks as though someone tried to clean it up - but still left behind brown smudges. There was one room that I thought was done well, but I had to spend an hour cleaning paint off of every book shelf in the room - which was a lot. They cleaned up in my kitchen sink every day and I had to clean it every night because there was paint everywhere. I covered the sprayer in my sink with a plastic bag so they wouldn't use it. They used it anyway. The amount of dirt and dust and paint on my floor was beyond belief. I cannot believe professional painters would paint as poorly as this team did. They did not cover my furniture or floors well at all, and I'm still finding things to clean. One bed had been moved back into place and when I moved it this weekend, the floor was covered with paint dust and paint. Why would they move a bed over a filthy floor? They painted the ceiling and primed the stripped walls in my bathroom and I have to scrub the tiles because there's paint splattered all over them. If neatness and quality matter to you, do not use this team. Joe was clearly unhappy that I was unhappy with the work, but it did not change the quality of the work I paid thousands of dollars for. I thought his price was low, and as I learned years ago - you get what you pay for. If only I had heeded my own advice.
Description of Work: I had six interior rooms painted with ceilings and two floors of hallways. Also had one bathroom stripped of wallpaper. Joe also had a carpenter come in and do some work. The carpenter needed to drywall around a newly installed air conditioning duct and build some shelves.

Response from Joe Egan Painting
I would like to respond to this report by first saying that this is the first negative response that we have ever received. I take a lot of pride in my company and its work. To start the estimate of the job was NOT above the price given to the customer. there were five additional ceilings that were added to be painted was the price was 200 dollars a ceiling (two coats of paint ) this was agreed with by both parties. Also we caulked primed and painted wood that was installed in the front entrance at no charge . All of the issues were discussed by customer and contractor and taken care of by the end of the job. I do not let problems on the job go without being taken care of first as you can see by reading my other reports. In our defense the children (teenagers ages about 17 and 19 ) rooms had clothes on the floor when we arrived and they must of thrown them into their closets ( we were not in the closets because we were not painting them )and her sons room had at least 200 pieces of tape on the ceilings and walls account of about 50 posters taped to this area.. There was a lot of cracks throughout the house which needed repair which causes a good amount of dust. this was discussed before the job was started and the dust was cleaned as good as possible twice, once by my workers and the last day by myself personally . there was also numerous amounts of dust ,dirt and dog hair under the beds and furniture which we cleaned. I personally sat down with the customer and hashed out all the problems and thought we left on good terms and the employee who made most of the mistakes is no longer with the company. If you read all of my other reports you would see that this is NOT the way my company is run, I do my best to make my customers happy and satisfied. I do feel we did a good job and I am sorry the customer does not feel the same way. this is my livelihood and I take it very seriously.

My overall judgement is excellent. Joe met with us several times before the job started to make sure the specs were right and determine what colors we wanted. He custom matched the wall color to a sample of the existing color of an adjacent room. He took a special trip to our house to pick up that sample. To me, that's great service. Do to a string of bad weather his schedule got backed up and he started the job several days late. However we had a deadline for completion and Joe put extra men on the job to get done on time. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone looking for a painting contractor.
Description of Work: Interior painting for 5 rooms plus extensive wood trim and ceilings, including 18 foot high walls and ceiling in living room.
