I attended a Home Show in 2010 in effort to find a contractor to update/remodel my kitchen and bathrooms in preparation for sale. I spoke with Gehman at the event and explained my budget and needs. I told them that based on the photos (and name!) that they were probably far outside of my price range. They insisted that they do work of all price ranges and asked to come out to give me an estimate. They were punctual and professional when visiting my home and preparing the estimate. However, the estimate was more than double my budget -- reasonable for a high end McMansion but not for my tiny townhouse that I was trying to fix up to get a quick sale. I was clear about my budget up front so I felt like Gehman wasted my time and theirs! I wish they had have been clear that they couldn't do anything in my budget or explained what they could have done if not a full remodel.
Description of Work: Provided an estimate only for kitchen and bathroom updates.

Gehman Custom Remodeling did good work. They were timely and personable. Their product was high quality. They took about two weeks to do the work and their crew was about three guys. It took so long because of weather interactions. They also cleaned up everything after and took away the debris.

I was very pleased when they remodeled my house because they were efficient and they did excellent work. They have an actual building so if you ever have to call you can get someone to talk to. They did the design as well and they have a computer program that allows you to walk through the proposed remodel. It is hard to compare their price to other people because the job grew while we were in it. In my experience, I believe their prices are somewhat higher than other firms. It is worth it though, because they do everything, you can get hold of them, and they came right out when I called about a few things that needed tweaked. I think they have a good infrastructure with a lot of people you can talk to; the quality of the people there is obviously very solid. I looked at pictures of other work they did and it looked good. I called them for a more recent job that involved putting pavers in but their price was significantly higher than other companies. I recommend talking to them because there are a lot of things to consider and these people made the whole process easy. If you don?t mind paying a little more to make sure everything is right and you get a long period of guaranty, these are the people to talk to.
Description of Work: Gehman Custom Remodeling put a second-story addition on my house and they did a kitchen addition as well. They are a design/build firm.

Overall, the job was fine. They were fast and got the work done very quickly. They were also very helpful because I had a special request for the door and they were able to accommodate it. I remember having paid them $1200 but it could be lesser than that. I felt that they were a bit pricey.

I bought the windows and they only installed it. A friend of a friend recommended them to me. You won?t be disappointed with them at all and the only thing you will be upset with would be the price. However, I was fine with the price for the work done in 2001. They have been catering to top 5% of the market since 2001. You won?t be disappointed with their ideas of what they do or how they do. Gehman is very expensive and he just wants the job done, but the financial concern is not on the list. I have dealt with him for doing 3 different projects and I have received bids for all 3. In 2001, he was a lot more workable for smaller jobs. He then started moving up-market. He was kind of growing too and he kind of outgrew me. So I didn?t have any problems with the price he charged me for installing the windows and it was fantastic. If you want exceptional work or if you want a kitchen that blows your mind and you want it to be on the magazine cover, then you need to call Dennis Gehman. The job for which he gave me a quote in 2008 was extensive work which was really driving the cost up. His bid was about $250000, but the other guys quoted about $140000. It was absolutely breathtaking. The price was $110000 over everybody else. He did try to delete some work, but the price was still high. So I chose another company who was much cheaper to get the work done. He is very reputable and caters to the upper end. He is the guy who has knowledge to create something extraordinary. He has his won showroom with nice staff. He has a full scale operation. He has tremendous amount of overhead. He cares for people who have the money and don?t have time. It?s better to do business with Gehman rather than choosing some guy who seems like he is great, but it turns out that he did more damage. I would consider using his services in the future too.
Description of Work: Gehman Custom Remodeling installed a few windows for me in probably November of 2001. I received another bid for finishing a basement, general work on a kitchen, renovating some bedrooms and installing more windows in March of 2008. It involved a major part of the house being fully torn up and redone including the electric, mechanical and plumbing work too. There were no additions to the house.

This was a very poor experience especially compared to other contractos we've met with!
Description of Work: I had someone from Gehrman come and provide an estimate for remodeling kitchen, baths in a home we are purchasing. While they were responsive in scheduling an appointment, the estimator was too arrogant and not cost conscious for what we were planning on doing. He said that they do 50 kitchens and 50 bathrooms a year and while they don't sub-contract out work their painting team wouldn't be available until April! 6 months away. He also said that based on the work we want to do it would be several hundred thousand dollars and it will take 2-weeks to get an estimate. Well, needless to say my experience was not good and I didn't get a sense that they are "partners" in the remodeling process. I haven't even gotten the estimate back and I know we won't be selecting them.

We have been blessed with an abundance of clients who value our design advice and craftsmanship enough to wait two weeks for a well considered and thoughtful written proposal. We apologize to Ms. Stoddard if our continued good fortune prevents us from being available within the time frame she desires. Further, we wish Ms. Stoddard well and hope she finds a contractor suited to her needs. We will continue to attempt to treat each customer with respect and view every opportunity the good Lord sends to us as a gift. We understand that not every opportunity is suited for our level of craftsmanship or the investment it requires. We always suggest that customer’s review the Remodeling Magazine Cost vs. Value Report for the Philadelphia area in order to view our proposal in the context of other comparable projects. Dennis D. They did not do any work for me. My interaction with them was very short. They are a professional organization with their own project managers. They do very good work. However, they were very expensive. I had gotten competitive bids too.
Description of Work: I contacted Gehman Custom Remodeling to get a quote for a new roof.
The experience could not have been better. Gehman provides a high level of service that starts with a Project Consultant, includes a Project Designer and always had a Project Manager actively working on site and supervising their employees. The Consultant met with us and within hours provided feedback as to how he perceived our needs. A Cost Opinion was rendered before we moved forward. Once we did, the Designer was involved. We reviewed his drawings and conferred in their premises on the details, aided by effective computer presentations. The actual work was performed by true professionals. They toiled in the harshest cold, even shoveled parts of our lawn to gain access to their work area, and despite trying conditions, always took their time to measure precisely, to ensure snug fit, good insulation and exact alignment of the shingles (James Hardie siding is absolutely beautiful but most only be installed by qualified professionals who have received the proper training and specialized tools to perform the installation; Gehman has such people.) Naturally, during window installation, patching and painting is done on the inside. They performed that plus carpentry to make all look like it had always been there and was brand new. If I left out anything, it's because I'm doing this on the fly, on a web site. Given enough time, I would probably pile on more accolades, but you get the point.
Description of Work: This was an enormous, mostly exterior project, that transformed the looks and thermal efficiency of our home. Siding was removed. Exterior foam board insulation was added as well as wrap (the home wasn't built with any). The windows were replaced with Marvin Infinity casements. The siding (low grade vinyl) was replaced with Hardie Board cement shingle panels. The windows edges and corners were trimmed with durable and attractive Azek cellular PVC. An existing deck (on its last leg), was replaced with TimberTech composite and the roof line of an adjacent family room was extended to enclose the main part of the deck with a screened in porch that features a skylight and ceiling fan. The basement and foundation of the home were insulated with foam injected material. The perimeter was landscaped with stones and border blocks. The stairway away from the deck leads to an EP Henry Paver Patio hard scape. Electrical and gas connections were added to complement the changes.

Anytime you tear your house apart it's a mess but that's the name of the game. It's no fault of the contractors or their employees. We're very pleased with their work. I hated the mess that I had to deal with for three weeks but it was a big job. They basically tore everything apart ad redid it. I felt like they may have been a little pricey. I'll use them in the future if I have the need.

The whole job went extremely well. I had to find someone to install this microwave after the installers from Home Depot who were supposed to install it were unable to do so. Apparently they didn't have the tools to drill through ceramic tile. Imagine that! So I checked out Angie's list and decided on Case. From the original contact requesting an estimate to the actual work being done I was very pleased with the professionalism and skills of everyone involved; especially the way they went out of their way to accommodate my schedule and get my job done as soon as possible. Gary arranged the appointment and Steve did the work. Steve arrived on time, examined the job and got to work. It has been a long time since I have had such a skilled workman on a job at my house and I will definitely continued to call on Case when I have some work to do. In fact they will be coming out next week to give me an estimate on replacing the doors to my basement entrance.
Description of Work: Installed an over-the-range microwave, a replacement for an older microwave that had finally died. Also replaced some water damaged drywall.

I called a windows and door retailer in my area who wanted over $2000 to replace a door in my laundry room that leads outside. After going on Angie's list I contacted Gary at Case who put Rick on the job. Gary needed to reschedule the initial appointment, but later that week he called me and told me Rick would do the job on his day off. Wow! Rick was absolutely fantastic. Not only did he install my door and do excellent work, but when he went to a local large retail home store to pick up the door I purchased, the condition was questionable so he drove to another store to get a door that was ideal and not "banged up". Rick returned the following week, just as he said he would, to finish the job. Though it was $1100, it was completely worth the workmanship and conscientiousness of Rick! Recommend with highest regards!

In November, Gary Hoch backed out of the contract, citing health issues. He told us that the designer could also do the construction for the same price. She decided to bring in her own sub-contractors to look at the project & re-bid the job. We told Gary & the designer that we were going to have other contractors look at the job as well, since we had no idea where the price would go next. We eventually chose to go with a different contractor because his references were excellent, some being from neighbors, & his price was better. During this process we learned from the designer that she had only been paid $900 out of the $2000. After we awarded the contract to the other contractor, she informed us that she would not continue working with us unless we paid her $150 per hour fee. So we are out $1100.00. Gary refuses to refund us the money, even though he broke the contract. Neither of them were forthcoming with their financial arrangement, even though we told the designer that we expected her to continue as designer on the project as we'd contracted for. The designer told us she had added her fee to her proposal to cover her design service (this was buried in her markup, as it wasn't listed) so in effect, had we gone with her, we would have paid for her design services twice.
Description of Work: We contacted Gary Hoch's remodeling company, a chain called Case Handyman & Remodeling, to look at our project for a kitchen, powder room, laundry room redo. Their salesman Tim Harley gave us an estimated cost range of $50,000-$70,000 for the work they'd perform. This was in February 2008. We chose Case over another contractor based on their estimate for the project, and the fact that we'd met the foreman & liked him. We paid Case a non-refundable fee of $750 (to be credited back to the cost of construction if we signed on to use Case for the project) for a design & feasibility study. We were told by Tim that their in-house designer was excellent and would work on the project. This turned out not to be true - they had no in-house designer at the time. Tim directed us to a cabinet sales showroom in Havertown, where we received an uninteresting design by an inexperienced designer. We complained & Tim told us he would have another designer call us, but that never occurred. I tried to contact Tim over a period of 2 weeks to no avail. One morning we received a call from Gary Hoch, the owner of the business and he told us Tim was gone & he'd be taking over our project. He took us back to the same cabinet showroom and had the owner work with us instead, but he was equally unhelpful. Gary told us he'd never worked with this company himself but had entered into an arrangement with them to design kitchens for Case, though he had no real knowledge of their work, or their capabilities. Gary agreed with us that working with this company in Havertown was unproductive & suggested we work with a very special kitchen designer he knew who just happened to have some time available. He told us she would charge $2000 for her services from design to completion; that she would be available for the entire project, from beginning to end. She came to our home and talked with us, confirming this arrangement, and even telling me at one point that she would shop for the various components such as cabinets and appliances with her clientele. We were impressed and thought it would be worth the extra money to have her there the whole time, so we signed a contract in good faith to that effect on July 17, 2007, giving Gary a check for the remaining $1250.00. So we went from $750 to $2000 for design. When we had a design that worked from this designer, we signed Gary Hoch's contract for construction on October 7, 2007, even though it was about $15,000 over the original estimate. When we asked why that was, Gary told us the original estimate was "neither here nor there." We reminded him that this original estimate was not "neither here nor there" to us, as we gave him the initial $750 based on it. But not wanting to lose our investment of the $750, which we would have, we decided to go with Case. We initially liked his foreman and thought he'd do a good job, and we thought that maybe Tim had deliberately underbid the job in order to get us to sign on.

We take great pride in what we do so I'm sorry to hear that you're frustrated. I feel that we went over and beyond any obligation by going to great lengths to find a designer that you connected with and felt confident in working along side. As agreed to in our written agreement (Feasibility Study) which you and I signed, we provided multiple Kitchen designs for a target budget range of $50,000 - $70,000. Numerous site visits were made to determine your project's scope in order to create a fixed price contract. And including many meetings with our production staff, sales and designers, we feel that you got much more value than the $2000 paid to us. As you mention in your comments, citing personal reasons at the time, I chose not to move forward with a construction contract and now it seems that your understanding of what you were supposed to receive for the $2000 fee paid to us not was not what it plainly states. Our designer met with you several times and provided many design options. It sounds like you wished for her to go further and work with you throughout your entire project, whether or not we were doing the work. Nothing in our agreement says that our designer will work with you throughout the job. The continuation of design services are part of our construction contract, which I decided not to do. We provided you with what you agreed to up front in the Feasibility Design agreement. In the end, it sounds like you chose to go with another contractor for the construction work. Please recognize that you're not paying twice for design services. Understand, additional monies were included in our proposed construction contract for our designer to work with you for the remainder of the project. As for your budget, it's always difficult to ascertain how much a project is going to cost when the parameters of the projects have not yet been defined as to design, materials, selections, etc. We offer to consult with clients for relatively low fees to help them through this process. The reason the cost is low is because this is a first step in the process and so we allocate only a minimal amount of cost to it in order to help the client determine if it's a project they wish to pursuit without committing to a high dollar construction contract. Most people thoroughly enjoy it and see the benefit of going through such a process in order to better define the project's details so a budget can be attached to it. As you can imagine with many changes in scope and materials, a project can drastically differ from any ballpark given up front. Even though you say our price was $15,000 over our original estimate, it still came well within the original budget range of $50k - $70k. After all this being said, I am still willing to offer you a refund of $200 as a goodwill gesture to help you move forward with your project in the best way you can. I wish you the only the very best with your project and in all things in your life. Sincerely, Gary Hoch, President

First they sent out someone to give me an estimate and it seemed to go well - though every time I tried to call and follow-up with this individual he wasn't in the office. The result - we exchanged voicemails to set-up the arrival of the workman. He showed up without any notes from the person who came out to do the initial walkthrough and estimate - he didn't have the materials necessary to complete the job or a plan to carry it through. With a bit of scrambling and a trip to Home Depot he returned with the materials he needed to finish the chair rail, which he did... two days later. The problem? The initial estimate stated that he could finish the ledger board AND chair rail in one day... I got a chair rail and paid for two. Tried to follow-up on the ledger board and curb to no success - finally got a hold of the person who did the work - he informed me that he was no longer with the company... Still no ledger or curb. Here's the kicker though - they actually offered me 2 hours off my total bill for a positive review on ANGIE'S LIST! No wonder this company is so highly rated - they are bribing their customers - that's why it took so long to post this review - I could have used the money but conscience won out...
Description of Work: I needed a chair-rail put in my kitchen but also had two other unrelated jobs - I wanted a ledger board installed above my front door and a curb built on my back driveway. I asked CASE to do all three and they agreed... they only completed the chair rail.

Rick did a great job. Everything I asked him to do he did well. I was very pleased that he would go up on the roof. I thought I would have to hire a roofer to do it.

Fixed loose shingles on roof, moved 2 pieces of furniture to 2nd floor. Dissembled a table, moving it to basement, and reassembled it. Their ballpark estimates were double anything else we were hearing and they were completely non-responsive after the initial visit. They are professional in general, but they really didn't seem to care if they got our job or not. So, we went with someone else.
Description of Work: We brought them out to give us an estimate on a garage and mudroom. We didn't hire them.
Rick was absolutely great, punctual, polite, and extremely productive. He sped through a list I thought impossible to complete and cleaned up after himself as he went.
Description of Work: Installed: 4 window boxes on 2nd floor, 2 blinds, 5 light fixtures (2 exterior, 3 interior), faucet, transformer and receptacle cover, door knob, and 3 dimmer switches. Repaired: 2 cabinet hinges, screen door (and reinstalled), and pantry door hardware. AND he cleaned out a section of gutter.

A little background... Having bought new for my first home, this time around (second home) this is my first pre-owned house - so I had little experience contracting remodeling work. After a successful kitchen remodel, I decided to go with a different remodeller for the master bathroom which was tied to some challenging that weren't simply 'cosmetic'. I know this is going to run long, so for those that don't have time to read the whole thing: CASE was ON-TIME, ON BUDGET, and TO-SPEC. On-time service from the original consultation to the completion date. On-budget, especially in comparison to the other contracts presented to me from other companies - they did more for the same amount proposed (no special-favors, under-the-table add-ons, scope-creep crap. Everything agreed up front and then delivered on the back end.) To-spec... yes, it was...okay, this is where it gets long-winded. The job - from a contractor's perspective, this is not brain surgery, completely builder-grade uninspired master bath layout with only one appealing feature, the jacuzzi tub. The customer-I will admit, I am a bit of a pill: I am a travelling consultant, my schedule is crazy. When I am home and work is being done, I like to observe. I have a bunch of girlie-girl stuff that I need to do and this is the bathroom I need to do it in. (I don't like to use the other two... so needless to say, I was 'schedule-conscious') The people were the difference: their professionalism, their competence, and their skills. The initial design consultation was effective and they set forth a clear, concise, proposal. It was clear that these folks had the competence, experience, skills and judgement to do this work. I picked Case over others that operate/service in the 20mile radius around the intersection of Rt30 and Rt252. The tile guys.. This is the focal point of the bathroom. I cancelled a trip to be there to observe this part of the project. They did a good job. Everything else, I came back off the road to find a job well done. Bottom line...when I bought the place, I hated my bathroom (for four years). Now, I luxuriate in it...and, so will the next owner.
Description of Work: Consultation and project to remodel my master bathroom: Flooring: ceramic tile installed on entire bathroom floor. Carpentry, etc.: existing quarter round replaced with baseboard and quarter round, painted - including details like mitering in corners or next to transitions. Walls, base moulding, bathroom door painted. Shower: bumped out to double-size, tiled (floor, walls and ceiling), new Moen shower set, and corner shelves. Plumbing/TUB: leak repaired on existing spa tub (even fixed sloppy builder-installed guts). Repaired, recaulked existing tile surround. Replaced valves, faucet, and control to match new Moen fixtures in shower. Installed discreet access panel on the other side of tub wall. Plumbing/VANITY: new matching Moen faucet installed to match new fixture in the shower, and new light fixture. Plumbing/COMMODE: new Kohler tank, bowl, and seat installed. The result is an upgraded master bathroom that is in harmony with the rest of the home, but especially appealing all on its own.
Rick Klaumenzer was the foreman on our job. He is a terrific overseer, when anything went wrong, as things always do on remodeling, he just went ahead and figured out how to make it right. He takes great pride in everything he works on and doesn't leave until he is sure you are satisfied.
Description of Work: Installed 5 new windows in master bedroom. Installation of new garage door. Installation of new (3) bedroom fan/lights. Rehab old deck, replace boards & build new privacy wall, etc.

Empty promises! John Vu, lead carpenter was FANTASTIC, & got fired after my job for going $300 over budget! Case blamed me b/c they flooded my basement & cracked my ceiling. Said they'd fix ceiling & then didn't. Said they'd build 1/2 wall but measured wrong. I paid anyway. Tim ordered shower door I didn't choose & then blamed me b/c the door I picked was only an "inspiration." Tim ordered Chrome trim kit w/o my input - didn't match my brushed nickel. John Vu worked alone-paid for 2 people-John begged for help but Case wouldn't give him help. They measured wrong so shower didn't fit. I did a ton of the work, purchased most materials & it cost me $13k for a 10x6 I did the finish work too. Promise high quality but if you don't buy it, they give you crap quality materials to cut costs. My shower doors are CHEAP. Ex: if they promise you cherry cabinets, like in a kitchen, they will make them out of press board to look like cherry, but you'll have paid for the real stuff. Work started late.
Description of Work: 10 x 6 bath. We gutted & did the finishing. We had already purchased most of the materials. Contracted with Case to do some minor plumbing changes, insulate & drywall, purchase & install shower pan, surround & door & trim kit, lay tile I had purchased, install lighting (minor rewiring), set toilet & hookup vanity (both pre-purchased). Contract was not time & materials, nor was it fixed price - we took the middle of the road contract where we provided some materials, Case estimated time, and the contract was based on Case providing remaining materials and their estimated time. Contract was for 7-days, 2 workers, 8 hour days. Tim Harley promised I would pick out all remaining materials for Case to order. Tim Harley promised they would provide lighting. Tim Harley promised 2 guys would work on the project. Tim Harley promised they would fulfill their promises, show up when they said they would, follow through on promises, and I could count on Case.
