Description of Work: He gave me a price. He was a very nice gentleman and explained everything. I saw where he was located and he told me that it would take a couple of weeks due to distance. I then decided to go with someone more local.

So far, it has gone pretty well and we still are working out the details of what we are going to do. It took him a couple of weeks for him to respond to our inquiry.

John was prompt, professional and always went above and beyond. The work he did was impeccable. If there was a question, he always made sure it was explained, to even people like me that had little understanding of such things. I definitely plan on calling him back for other jobs I need to get done.I cannot say enough how pleased I am with the work that John did. We were always in contact, and even on week ends when I had a question, he would answer my text messages and/or phone calls.
Description of Work: As part of my 203K loan, I had to upgrade some electrical, replace some windows, add water heaters, and re-do/refinish all porches in my 2 family home, add an exhaust fan in my attic, and reparge my chimney. John (and Todd/his brother who works with him) was there bright and early on the day he said they would be. They first did all the work that had to be done externally as bad weather was predicted for the next few days. They were prompt & professional. Their work was above what I had expected. When he began the internal work (electrical upgrades/installation of water heaters, additional outlets) they came promptly as always, and even on mornings when we were still asleep, they was quiet and respectful and made sure our pets were kept away from the work areas. They cleaned up after himself and completed the jobs way ahead of schedule. He and Todd were always very polite. I enjoyed the days they were there, and they never minded my "butt-insky" questions on everything they did. The were such nice people, they even took in my trash bins from the curb before I could. We were put at ease and our questions never felt like they were not important.

We were in the process of purchasing FHA HUD home, and the mortgage required a HUD Consultant and a Contractor Estimate. I contact Mr John Evans of JE Improvemants (Formally American Contracting). Mr. Evans was professional, personable, and very courteous. He was right on time (early actually) for our appointment, walked throught the home with us to see what needed being done, and listened to what we would like to have done in additon. He answered all our questions, explained everything in detail where we understood everything. He did not rush us, and made sure that he understood everything we wanted and needed to be included in the estimate. He made suggestions to the things we wanted done so that we could have what we wanted, but save some money and make it more useful. We chose him from the list on Angies, because he not only had a good rating, but his bio covered all the things we believed that needed repairing in the home we were considering buying, which, not being professionals, knew there was quite an extensive amount of repairs. When the HUD Consultant came, he walked through the home again conferring with the consultant. His estimate fee was very reasonable, and I believe the quote he gave us for the extensive repairs were in par for the work that needed to be done. However, since we decided not to purchase this house, we only have the experience of his estimate. When we finally do find our home, we will definately call him back for any/all work that needs to be done. He definately left us with a very good feeling, and a good experience. We would highly recommend this person for any kind of contracting/repair work.

The roofing repair went well, and then I asked Mr. Evans to come to another city where I owned another home that we were remodeling and needed to sell soon. We needed some electrical ,and plumbing work done . I asked if he was licensed to do that. He replied that " he was". I inquired about city permits, and was told that "I did NOT need any- as this was a minor repair, not a complete rewiring job". Having dealt with the city before, I KNEW that was not right, as permits ARE required for ALL work done by contractors in the city. I then asked him if he was registered with our state. He replied that he was. I checked online, and found nothing under the company name of American Contracting. I DID find his name under another company name- J.E. Improvements. However, this registration did NOT list electrical, or plumbing. When I told him what I had learned- he said that he would simply call the state and ask them to add the two categories to his listing ! I was amazed that they would do such a thing over the phone, and called them myself. I was told that "anyone who is registered can call and add anything without submitting any proof of additional licenses". They told me I needed to check with my local city for licensing. I called the Scranton office of licensing and permits, and was told that " Mr. Evans is NOT licensed as either a plumber or electrican in Scranton". He had also told me that he installs and maintains furnaces and heating systems. He is not licensed to do that either in Scranton. He CAN do roofing and siding as that only requires a contractor to pull a permit, and he can get one since he is already registered with the state of PA. There were a couple other things that bothered me. First, he kept saying that he "preferred to be left alone when he worked" and that "we could just leave a key to the house and did not need to be there while the work was being done". Also, I had asked for estimates on painting and a new roof and possibly siding and was told that he "did not write estimates until the customer agreed verbally to a price, because it was a waste of time because some people didn't call him back". Upon checking, I found that he registered his company name as J.E. Improvements with the state on 7/23/2009, yet he did a job for someone on Angie's list in SEPT. 2009 under the name American Contracting. Under Pa. law , doing jobs under two or more company names MUST be reported to the state. I asked the state if they had any listing for American Contracting- they said "NO". Bottom line is this : Mr. Evans is a nice man, did a good job on our roof repair, but if you want him to work in Scranton, be aware that he is NOT licensed for electrical, plumbing or heating, and can NOT pull permits for that work. He CAN do roofing, siding and painting as I am told. permits can be obtained for those jobs as long as he can show his PA registration card and current insurance of $50,000 or more.
Description of Work: Mr. Evans came to repair the roof which was damaged by a windstorm. Shingles had blown off, and the gutter was hanging loose and needed to be reattached. He came promptly, and had to climb a 40 foot ladder to do the job. He had no helper to even hold the ladder for him, but he was able to manage it alone. He made the necessary repairs and charged a fair price. The only negative was that I did NOT get any receipt, but I assumed that the check was the receipt, as it was only a small repair. I DID think it was odd, as I always got a receipt whenever work was done on my home.
